KDE4.3: wicd versus networkmanager

Hi,
i am running KDE4.3 (1 [extra] and 1 kdemod) and am deciding on a networking application.
I thought i'd go with WICD since it is lighter and has no GTK dependencies on KDE, but for some bizarre reason on both my pc's it will *never* connect with DHCP to a wired network on the first attempt. When I manually run 'dhcpcd' it connects like a charm.
On the other hand when I run the networkmanager daemon with the nm-applet tray icon, connectivity is perfect and really fast. Although it gives me this horrible GTK popup when it connects to the network. On fedora 11's networkmanager (NetworkManager-0.7.1-8.git20090708) you can turn these popup notifications off ...... will 'we' get that version as well by tthe way?.
Why would networkmanager work perfectly and wics make me restart dhcpcd before connecting? I'd use netcfg but I am often underway and connect to different networks all the time and i have found wired/wireless switching a bit cumbersome with netcfg.

Wicd seems to have mixed reviews.  It works great for some people and is the answer to all their issues, but some people just have problem after problem after problem with it.  Personally I don't like the way it handles multiple WAPs with the same ESSID; that's why I am using plain ol' netcfg now.  So, no, I would not agree that one has to do anything special to make wicd misbehave.  (Maybe it just doesn't like me.)

    Hello all.  I am a user of KDE.  I used to use networkmanager until the great KDE 4 transition event.  I could not find an applet that did not displease me, and the native KDE 4 applet was just a teaser.  As such, I migrated to wicd, but have never been completely happy with it.  The ioct backend worked okay with the Broadcom-wl driver, but it just won't work with the B43 native kernel module.  As such, I have been using the external tools back end.  They are slow, but they have worked for me -- until today.
    I spent about an hour on a problem I just should not have had.  I had a mission critical situation where I had to join a WEP encoded network.  I generally use WPA2 and have not had to use WEP for months.  Wicd just would not make the connection.
    I did not have time to fully diagnose the problem to the point where I can create a meaningful bug report -- time was of the essence.  Instead, I shut down wicd and brought the network up by hand (iwlist, iwconfig, ifconfig, dhcpcd).
    I came home tonight to enjoy some quiet and decided to spend some time in the forums.  I found some posts that may be related to my issue but, while searching, I found there is now a networkmanager plasmoid for KDE 4.4.
    Anybody want to chime in on the state of wicd versus networkmanager or about the merits of the new plasmoid?

  • [SOLVED] Ubuntu One, networkmanager vs wicd

    ubuntuone-control-panel-qt works, and I can login to Ubuntu One, but no files are synced.

    I'm on a wireless network and using wicd, is that the problem? Do I have to change from wicd to NetworkManager for it to work?

    Removing networkmanager fixed the problem. Ubuntu One now working with wicd
    sudo pacman -Rs networkmanager
    Now, how do I mark this as SOLVED? Hmm...

  • Gnome-keyring + networkmanager: Not prompting for password

    I recently shifted from wicd to networkmanager & I want it to be that way. There is one problem that's troubling me. As a non-root user, if I connect to a new network, the nm-applet doesn't ask for passwords.
    The logs say:
    2014-07-19T08:29:45.217385+05:30 archlinux NetworkManager[20784]: <info> (wlan0): device state change: prepare -> config (reason 'none') [40 50 0]

    I run "awesome wm" and I've configured gnome-keyring via the "pam" method & I believe that it works.

    Can anyone help me in finding out what might be wrong? Thanks.

    I had the same issue. Turns out I was using SLiM with auto_login enabled, which doesn't unlock the GNOME keyring on login (see this post). Changing auto_login to false solved the issue.

  • [SOLVED] RT2870 drops connection after pacman update

    Since last pacman upgrade my USB wireless works for just a few seconds while used; while watching transfer speed I see at first full speed and then going slower and slower and in a few secs totally stopped, without being disconnected. I have to reboot to get it working again (worked sometimes by ip link set wlan 0 down & up)
    No difference using Wicd or networkmanager.

    certainly didn't expect this... turned off power saving
    iwconfig wlan0 power off
    and all is well again. Surely doesn't explain why it started after kernel update. But it works...

    Hi,
    on my ProBook surprisingly rt2860sta could not connect anywhere, let alone with WPA, and the opensource driver rt2800pci did. With moderate success I might add because it caused a kernel panic a few times - I found Monitor mode triggered it, in kernel 2.6.36 (have not tried 2.6.37 yet). Note that rt2860sta was known to cause them as well, when disconnecting from networks.
    Several things to mind to make it work. Quoting from my article about installing Arch on it:
    The only way to get your card working is to make sure to unblock RF-Kill on all devices; the Wireless (and Bluetooth since they are combined in this model). In Arch Linux a simple startup service takes care of it, part of the rfkill package. You also have to make sure one or the other driver is blacklisted. Having them both loaded leads to connection failures.
    As for actual connecting, with rt2800pci, you can take a look at my connection script. It includes sample wpa_supplicant configuration as well. See rt-connect.sh: http://sysphere.org/~anrxc/j/articles/p … connect.sh

  • [Solved] Several installs and issues with DHCP issue every time.

    Edited: more concise information!
    Hi folks,
    I was using Arch fine for months but decided to reinstall it fresh at the new year, but since then I have been plagued by connection issues. I install Arch and follow many of the tips found in these Wikis to set it up how I like then install preload and readahead.
    Post-Installation Tips
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pos … ation_Tips
    - LCD filtered fonts
    - Disable IPv6 (I use Chorus/NTL and they have a tip for improving Firefox that disables IPv6, so I think that this is not to blame)
    Laptop
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Laptop
    - Battery state monitoring utilities (acpi)
    - Laptop-mode-toold
    - Powernowd
    Maximising Performance
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Max … erformance
    - Swapiness
    - Mount /tmp to RAM
    My internet connection works fine, even when rebooting, but later I turn on my computer and WICD or networkmanager fails on "obtaining IP address. I really think that there is something in one of these tips that is causing this problem, but I am at a loss as to what. Like I say, I was using it happily for many months before these current issues. The only thing I did differently was systematically set up my computer with all the tips detailed above, where as before, I collected these tips over a period of time and did not do them all straight after installation. I have tried rolling back the changes and this has not fixed the issue.
    I have had this issue over many reinstalls, using networkmanager or WICD and each time I was hoping that I was doing something wrong.  I have an Ubuntu and work Windows laptop that both work fine, so I don.t think it is anything to do with the connection itself.
    I am not sure what information you would need so I thought I would post both of these files. If you would like anything else, give me a shout and i can post it.

    Hey Scott!
    I don't know if it is helpful in any way but I have a similar problem with my desktop PC.
    I have two ethernet controllers installed and somtimes I had a Ip address assigned and sometimes I didn't.
    One which is connected to the router and a 2nd one I use sporadically to connect additional computers.
    The dhcpcd would fail to load even if I followed steps suggested from other forum members.
    My temporary fix was to run:
    # dhcpcd
    manually.
    If this helps you might consider adding "dhcpcd" at the end of
    /etc/rc.d/network
    I know it's not really a fix but it helps me to get a working connection whoch otherwise would fail - or work if lucky but i don't like lucky with network/internet ^^

  • No wireless connection after pacman -Syu

    Hi,
    I'm almost new in this forum. Recently I did a system upgrade (or update?). After that the wireless connection didn't work again. I used the search function but I didn't find a solution so I reinstalled networkmanager and the wireless card driver (from AUR). Then I did everything mentioned in these wikis:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_BCM4312
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NetworkManager
    But no success
    The output to lspci | grep BCM43 is:
    04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)
    The output of iwconfig is:
    lo        no wireless extensions.
    eth0      no wireless extensions.
    These are the relevant lines of rc.conf:
    MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
    #MOD_BLACKLIST=() #deprecated
    MODULES=(lib80211_crypt_tkip !b43 wl fuse snd-hda-intel)
    #eth1="dhcp"
    eth0="dhcp"
    #INTERFACES=(eth0 eth1)
    INTERFACES=(!eth0)
    #gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
    #ROUTES=(!gateway)
    # DAEMONS
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng hal !network networkmanager !netfs !wicd crond fam gdm)
    I really appreciate any help, thank you very much in advance,
    Luis Pablo

    I'm making some progress. I realized I forgot to blacklist ssb and ndiswrapper. I compiled the driver from the Broadcom website. This is the new modules array in rc.conf:
    MODULES=(lib80211_crypt_tkip wl !ndiswrapper !b43 !ssb fuse snd-hda-intel)
    Now "sudo iwconfig" output is
    lo        no wireless extensions.
    eth0      IEEE 802.11bg  ESSID:""  Nickname:""
              Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.412 GHz  Access Point: Not-Associated
              Bit Rate:54 Mb/s   Tx-Power:off
              Retry min limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
              Power Managementmode:All packets received
              Link Quality=5/5  Signal level=0 dBm  Noise level=0 dBm
              Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
              Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0
    eth1      no wireless extensions.
    I'm still not able to scan wireless networks.
    sudo iwlist scan
    lo        Interface doesn't support scanning.
    eth0      Failed to read scan data : Invalid argument
    eth1      Interface doesn't support scanning.
    Neither WICD or NetworkManager are able to detect wireless networks.
    Thank you in advance,
    Luis Pablo

  • [SOLVED] How to create a wlan0 interface?

    Hello:
    I'm getting a lot of problem with my wireless card, as you can see in this post (unsolved).
    I installed the supposedly driver for my wireless card without result. Installed "WICD" -installed networkmanager, but never achieved to initialize the GUI- and just see my wired connections, not the wireless, mine or from others.
    I'm just wondering if the problem is that I do not have a "wlan0" interface in my "/etc/rc.conf". If that  is true, could I create one by myself? In the wiki there are many pages (wireless setup, beginners guide, etc) that makes some dispersion in the information and it is difficult to me to follow -and evaluate- That's why I'm asking for your support.
    My actual rc.conf -selected parts- is -notice that because WICD there are some "!", as the wiki suggested -:
    # Use 'ifconfig -a' or 'ls /sys/class/net/' to see all available interfaces.

    # Declare each interface then list in INTERFACES
    # - prefix an entry in INTERFACES with a ! to disable it

    # DHCP: Set your interface to "dhcp" (eth0="dhcp")
    # Wireless: See network profiles below
    #Static IP example
    #eth0="eth0 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"

    I know this is not what you expect as a reply but anyway... I recently bought a very nice machine which is a Thinkpad x201i (the cheap version of the x201), great build quality, affordable price, perfect size and enough processing power. The problem is that it came with a realtek 8192se wireless card. It's everywhere on the internet: the driver sucks and it's only supplied by the vendor (so not in kernel tree, not even in staging). it costed me few bucks and 20 minutes of my time to replace it with an intel centrino advanced 6200N, I guess the Intel Centrino-N 1000 is even cheaper (saw it at less than USD15 on amazon). You'll get in-tree kernel drivers, injection support and all that fun stuff... I was happy to pay the extra money just thinking about the endless frustration I would have gotten with the realtek card. Not that compiling a driver makes me scared, but using a crappy driver is a pain.

  • Iwl3945 module loading problem (with workaround)

    I've been experiencing problems with my intel wireless card (iwl3945) not loading at boot time. The problem arose after a fresh install from a Chakra (kdemod) live CD after I got a new harddrive for my notebook. It worked fine from the live CD and immediately post-install but when I upgraded the system with "pacman -Syu" (the kernel was upgraded as part of this) the card no longer loaded during boot (i.e. wlan0 would not show up under "ifconfig -a").
    I checked some threads on the iwl3945 (e.g. http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 18#p638618 and http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=73876) but couldn't find quite the same behaviour so decided to start a new thread.
    It's also similar to this thread (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=82357), but this is not for the iwl3945.
    The following is a log of the problem:

    I read somewhere that there was an issue with kill switches and that rfkill may help so I installed it from AUR. However, there didn't seem to be any block:
    $ rfkill list
    1: hci0: Bluetooth
    Soft blocked: no
    Hard blocked: no
    2: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: no

    3: dell-bluetooth: Bluetooth
    Soft blocked: no
    Hard blocked: no
    I also tried creating a modprobe.conf file as suggested in some quarters (/etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945.conf):
    alias wlan0 iwl3945
    options iwl3945 disable_hw_scan=1
    Sadly still no luck on a reboot.
    After much pulling of hair the following workaround finally did it for me. Basically even though the module doesn't load during boot I can remove it and then modprobe it manually and it then works so that I can bring up the interface:
    # rmmod iwl3945
    # modprobe iw3945
    # ifconfig wlan0 up
    # ifconfig -a
    eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:15:C5:46:C6:6A
    UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
    RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
    RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
    Interrupt:17
    lo Link encap:Local Loopback
    inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
    inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
    UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
    RX packets:24 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:24 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
    RX bytes:1240 (1.2 Kb) TX bytes:1240 (1.2 Kb)
    wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:18:DE:1E:7B:46
    UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
    RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
    RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
    wmaster0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-18-DE-1E-7B-46-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
    UP RUNNING MTU:0 Metric:1
    RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
    RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
    I can then use wicd to connect to my router at home (networkmanager doesn't seem to work for me with the same settings).
    Hopefully this may be of some use to someone with the same issue and to any kernel gurus that may be scanning this section of the forum.

    I tinkered with the rfkill module as suggested.
    First checked what the default behaviour was
    $ lsmod | grep rfkill
    rfkill 19728 3 bluetooth,dell_laptop,cfg80211
    Then blacklisted rfkill in rc.conf using "!rfkill" in the modules line
    $ lsmod | grep rfkill
    rfkill 19728 1 cfg80211
    Unfortunately I still had to manually remove and reload iwl3945 as before.
    I tried inserting the options in modprobe.conf suggested by you in your other post
    # /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf (for v2.6 kernels)
    options bluetooth rfkill=0
    options dell_laptop rfkill=0
    After a reboot still no wireless activity and checking rfkill module gives same as for blacklisting in rc.conf, i.e. ...
    $ lsmod | grep rfkill
    rfkill 19728 1 cfg80211
    So still manually un/reloading as before. At least the workaround is not too labour intensive.

  • Wifi networkconnection fails

    Hi there!
    I don't know why, but my ArchLinux system fails everytime I try to connect to any wlan access points. Neither my smartphone's wlan hotspot is working nor my home network.
    I even tried wicd, netcfg and wicd and NetworkManager even without protection everything fails...
    Wired LAN runs without any problems. Can you please help?
    Thank you...

  • How to determine an special WiFi SSID found by WiFi

    I have password of My neighbor WiFi (to connect just Internet. I don't care about local net stuff).
    She turn off WiFi modem when she's not using internet and Turn it on for using Internet.
    So I wan't to make an Alarm if my laptop found She's WiFi SSID. I think 5 min tolerance for scan WiFi is OK. I use wicd as NetworkManager.

    tomk wrote:Do you really want "an Alarm"? Or do you actually want your system to automatically connect to your neighbour's wifi whenever it is available?
    I know how to do something automatically but I don't know how to chech if that WiFi SSID is available. I just read wicd, wicd-cli, wicd-... manuals but there is not any option to show list of available WiFi SSID in terminal (Or I didn't see ).
    I want to set an auto check every (for exam) 15min to check list of available WiFi SSID and with grep check for my neighbor SSID.
    It's my algorithm.

  • Wifi Woes

    Hello there,
    Everytime I restart my pc wifi-menu just doesn't work
    I also tried  1.netctl-auto profile,
                       2.wpa_supplicant,
                       3.wicd,
                       4.NetworkManager but nothing works...
    Then after hours of struggle it starts to work automatically.....

  • Instructions: easy roaming wifi via the command line

    First off, you don't need netcfg, wicd, or networkmanager for this. All you need is ifplugd, wpa_supplicant, and the Arch initscripts.
    If you don't already have ifplugd and wpa_supplicant, install them.
    # pacman -S ifplugd wpa_supplicant
    Now put this in /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf (replace the file if it's already there):
    ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
    ctrl_interface_group=network
    eapol_version=1
    update_config=1
    fast_reauth=1
    ap_scan=1
    network={
    key_mgmt=NONE
    and this in /etc/rc.local, replacing "wlan0" with the name of your wireless interface:
    # Start wpa_supplicant on wireless interface
    echo "Starting wpa_supplicant"
    wpa_supplicant -iwlan0 -Dwext -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B || echo " ... FAILED"
    In /etc/ifplugd/ifplugd.conf, uncomment the section relating to wlan0, and if necessary rename it. Add wlan0 (or whatever) to the interfaces controlled by ifplugd.
    Finally, in /etc/rc.conf, add your wireless interface (in my case wlan0) to the INTERFACES list:
    wlan0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(foo bar baz ... wlan0)
    Add ifplugd to your daemons list and remove network (or wicd or networkmanager). And that's it, you're done. wpa_supplicant will auto-associate with the nearest open network, and when it does, ifplugd will run dhcpcd and connect you. To select another network you can use wpa_cli or wpa_gui, and ifplugd will connect you automatically. Simple, fast, and it works.

    This should go on the wiki, not the forums

  • Possible problem installing kdeplasma-applets-plasma-nm

    When doing pacman -Syu kdeplasma-applets-plasma-nm for the new kde network management package does anyone have any problem installing it?  I installed the first released version a few days back which could be installed in parallel with the old kdeplasma-applets-networkmanagement package which was fine, and then once installed the original package could then be removed.  However the new version of kdeplasma-applets-plasma-nm (0.9.3.0-2 -> 0.9.3.1-1) now has the same filenames as the original old package and there may be filename conflicts during install.
    Does anyone know the best way to install the new package (0.9.3.1-1) on a system where the first version (0.9.3.0-2) was not yet installed?

    OK so I guess that the following three commands in sequence should work fine - but I do wonder if a note to the effect would be worth as an announcement?
    pacman -Syu
    pacman -R kdeplasma-applets-networkmanagement
    pacman -S kdeplasma-applets-plasma-nm
    Otherwise if trying an install on its own leads to:
