Kde4 or kdemod 4?

I always used kdemod 3, until kde 4 came out, it was too buggy for me, and I've been working in gnome ever since. I'm ready to go to kde 4.2, it seems as if kde 4.2 and kdemod 4.2 are so very similar? Can anyone enlighten me on the differences, and opinions?

Just as a tiny piece of counterpoint to most of these responses --
kdemod4.2 on my Arch64 system was continuously losing my settings regarding widget (plasmoid) placement, configuration, and status(deleted plasmoids would come back, added plasmoids would vanish on logout/login), as well as wallpaper.  I struggled with reconfiguring my desktop once or more per day while trying various advice from this forum and elsewhere regarding deleting config files, checking permission settings, and etc.  The problem was sporadic, and sometimes I'd think I had it fixed only for it to come back.
At least one thread at the chakra forums seemed to indicate that I was not the only one with this issue, and it seemed limited to 64bit users -- I'm not claiming this as evidence of a widespread problem or even that it was the "fault" of kdemod devs/packagers, I'm just telling you what I know.
In any case, I uninstalled it and replaced it with kde4.2 vanilla from the Arch repos, and the problem vanished.  I've also not noticed any significant differences in appearance, functionality, or speed due to making this switch, though I acknowledge that there are likely changes I'm not aware of.
So while I'm sure kdemod is fine for just about everyone, having tried both back to back I really wouldn't know the difference were it not for the chakra branding being gone.

    Welcome

With the knowledge of what it is yet kdemod small community. Which version will be more failure-free, more user friendly?

I haven't used kde4 from extra, but I haven't seen any problems with the stability in the kdemod packages. The main advantage kdemod has right now is that it's more modular, so you only need to install parts that you want.
As for user-friendliness, there's not much different in the actual core packages, but there are some extra things kdemod has available, like arxin, shaman and some prepackaged plasmoids.

  • Speed Kde4 (_mod) / Gnome

    Hello.
As a relatively new archlinux user, I want some comparisons between gnome and kde.
Are there any indications about KDE4 (or kdemod) is slightly faster than gnome?  thinking primarily of the overall response time, and a comparison of resource usage between KWin and Compiz.
    Anyone?

3ner wrote:If you care about speed, neither kde nor gnome are the top choice. If you are looking for a full bloated DE, speed is not a good argument to decide between gnome or kde.
Just install both, use both for a week each, and decide for the one you like more. Since speed in average pc usage is highly subjective anyways, even go this route if you want to go for the "faster" one.
I agree 100%. The differences between GNOME and KDE will really be personal taste differences. Judging between the two while looking for speed is a folly as both are giants.
However, I must point out that you can set up either one to be more responsive. WHile I am not certain on how to do so under GNOME, in KDE, for example, you can preload instances of your favorite apps. This will cause the initial loading of the desktop to take longer, however it will also cause the applications to start up faster. So if you don't plan on logging out or restarting often, then that would buy you some time.
The question you need to ask yourself is which one feels better to you. Do you like the over all look and feel of gnome and gtk based apps, or of kde and qt apps. While you can use either apps in either DE, it IMO doesn't make much sense to use KDE and use nothing but GTK apps. So, do like 3ner suggested. Install and try both for a while. You can always delete one when you are done.

  • [Request] call for Digikam 0.10: beta6 and kipi0.2.0-beta4

    Hello,
actually the KDE4mod-based digikam is still based on the outdated beta2.
This version really has some nasty bugs - so I really someone is able to build a new version based on beta5 - see:

Of course some working kipi-plugins based would be also fine

Well, I've had a look at diffrent digikam-solutions now:
Actually digikam for KDE4 in "kdemod-extragear"  is based on beta 2 of 0.10 as stated in the first message and digikam in "extra" is still based on 0.9.4 for KDE3. Unfortunately the "Daily KDE4 Subversion Packages" seems to interfere with the "normal" KDE4 installations:
. They are set up to be installed into /usr instead of /opt/kde so they will conflict with current KDE(mod 3&4) packages and should ideally be installed on a spare system like a separate partition for use via chroot or a virtual emulator. A 4Gb flashdrive  is ideal.
I'm looking for a more simple solution here...

  • Emacs not load in KDE

I am running latest KDE4.3 (kdemod, actually), and want to load Emacs (GTK or ideally KDE-native Qt app).
    I have latest emacs-cvs too.
Emacs loads fine within konsole, just not as its own app.
I've looked in /var/log for clues, but don't see any issues.
    Any ideas?

Emacs runs fine with KDE 4.3 here. (Though I'm not running kdemod, now that the official KDE is modular.)
Does emacs run in other window environments? Have you tried launching emacs from the command line to see what error messages you get? For instance, if .Xdefaults or .Xresources has an incorrect setting, then emacs won't launch from a menu.

There are some GUIs for clamav, including this in the AUR:

I use gnome so I've never used this, but it's worth a shot.

  • How to run KDE4 apps in kdemod 3.5.8 ?

    Hi All,
I would like to run the new KDE4 app Okular, which is a pdf viewer that allows annotation.  This is a killer feature and one that I can't find in any other app besides acrobat (on windows).  Is it possible to install okular so that I can run it within my current kdemod 3.5.8 install?  I've played with kde4 on a live cd and would rather not run it.
    Cheers,
    kilolima

The kdemod packagers have made some kde4 packages already, and 4.0.1 packages should be out very soon (wait for them and the updated installation instructions!). Just go to the kdemod forum

  • [SOLVED] Frequent KDE4.2 lockups

Is anyone else getting frequent (2x/day) lockups of KDE4? First the panel and "start" menu become unresponsive, then everything chokes.
I'm not sure whether this is because of recent KDE4.2 updates or nvidia driver updates (I'm running 180.35 right now).
I'm probably going to revert to an earlier nvidia driver, unless somebody has some evidence otherwise.
Meanwhile, I'm back in good old openbox. KDE4.2 was looking pretty good there for a couple of weeks, though.

Are we ralking KDE4 via Arch repos or KDEmod?  The later is rock stable here, with Nvidia 180.22.
Do you have any plasmoids installed from AUR?  I had the Custom Weather Plasmoid installed-and that was causing numerous problems...once I got rid of it, things are happy now.

  • Back up color scheme in KDE4 [SOLVED]

    Hello,
What config files might I back up to easily return to my custom color scheme in case I need to reinstall. I could, of course, just write down every html notation number, but I thought there might be a config file that would make backing it up a bit easier.
       Thanks--

if you saved a color scheme through the settings, on vanilla kde4
    ~/.kde4/share/apps/color-schemes/
you should see something like MyColors.color (*.color files are any ones you've changed or saved)
    i'm guessing .kdemod4 for kdemod

  • KDEmod=unstable? + What WM/DE would you reccomend for me

Hi guys. I don't want to start a flame war, please.
I am using Arch with KDEmod and I have the impression that this combination is a lot less stable than my previous Ubuntu+Gnome+Compiz (mind you, I am NOT running compiz on Arch anymore). I don't know if this is attributable to KDE or to KDEmod or to Arch - I am currently installing Gnome on Arch in order to check that.
Anyways. Annoyed by the quirks of KDE (like random Konqueror crashes, improper handling of removable media, showing pop-ups like kdesu in the background etc.) I think it's high time I tried some lightweight WM. I've only used Gnome and Fluxbox for a long enough time to have an opinion on them - I am waiting for your opinions.
    What I am looking for:
    1) Simplicity - I'm fed of Gnome/KDE running a bazillion services I've never asked for and then randomly crashing them
    2) Beauty - what kept me from trying lightweight options so far was that they all seem to look plain ugly (judging from screenshots). I never managed to get my Fluxbox to look the way I wanted. Do you know any WMs with really good themes?
    3) Stability - compiz is not an option: no more crashes please!
    4) An elegant way to manage my open windows - I love the Expose effect but I am not sure if I can get it to work without compositing (actually I'm using the old and unmaintained Kompose to avoid compiz and still have that in my KDEmod). I also love docks (FYI: yes, I am a former Mac user ). I like avant-window-navigator, e.g., but it doesn't run without compositing (and the Arch package is a mess anyway - when I find the time to examine it I'll contact the maintainer).
    So: waiting for your opinions.

alex_anthony wrote:If you're using GNOME right now, you could try the Metacity compositor. (In gconf-editor)
and could you have a Qt WM? I don't think so - you can use QT in any WM as is, Qt manages whats in the window, the WM sorts out borders etc
    Isn't KWin written in Qt?
Anyway. I've tried GNOME w/ Metacity. It's working pretty nice. I've always had the feeling that GNOME's way is the way to go, not KDE's: no bloat, no revolution, just steady improvement.
Openbox is way to problematic - e.g., when I used the template autostart.sh Openbox would crash on every start. Sometimes the buttons in GTK apps were unusable.
staple wrote:kde 4 is really light on resources. i'm not sure what more you could want from a traditional DE
You don't know, so I'll tell you: it's stability I want. I really like the new technologies in KDE4 but I'm not a teenager using his computer to play (when I was I didn't care for stability). I need a reliable desktop experience. And I'm not using KDE4 until it stops crashing every 10 minutes.
Edit: I've re-read your post and it is actually the same thing you said, isn't it.

  • [Solved]Tray invisible in kdemod 4.2

Last edited by abhinandh (2009-02-02 03:08:35)

fixed it! you just have to use qt in abs and set _qtcopyver to the newest in ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/. and rebuild. You don't have to set a new qtversion. qt-copy is meant to be the latest qt that works with kde..
It didn't work before the panel crashed and reloaded though. Don't know if a restart or a delete of cache in .kde4 would have done the same.
I spoke too soon and/or i needed to delete .kde4/cache-* .kde/cache-*. the problem was that icons now, although they lookey flawless, didn't upgrade their status either.
So I deleted .kde4/cache-* .kde/cache-* abs down latest qt PKGBUILD, updated _qtcopyver, sat pkgver to 4.5.0 and sat: _pkgfqn=qt-x11-opensource-src-${pkgver}-beta1 and removed "||return 1" from patchline & then compiled & installed. Maybe i have crashes to come but now the tray problem is fixed and everything seems much snappier

  • KDEmod 4.1 (RC1) packages

It doesn't look like many people know of them, and since we could use some more testing before 4.1 is released, I'm posting here.
An up-to-date-ish post here, about how to install it:
    http://www.kdemod.ath.cx/bbs/viewtopic.php?pid=4611
In addition to the normal KDE packages, we provide some extra plasmoids and other nice packages, like Yakuake, Arxin and Shaman. We also have some KOffice 2 pre-alpha packages, if you want to try it out (thanks to boom1992 ).
I have made PKGBUILDs for the kde-nepomuk stuff from playground (tags:/-kio-slave and the like), but because funkyou is on holiday, it isn't added to the repo's yet (the x86_64-version can be gotten from http://kdemod41.likbilen.com/ however, and everything should be kosher by monday).
If the official repo is slow, there's a complete mirror at:
    http://kdemod.iskrembilen.com/repo/unstable/i686/
    http://kdemod.iskrembilen.com/repo/unstable/x86_64/
Please note that these packages are still rather unstable, but they are really getting there. Stuff that's missing is the language packs and kdebindings (looking into it this weekend, together with building 4.0.84).
(Oh, and before someone starts mentioning duplication of effort, these are split packages, like the kdemod 3.5 packages, and also, we just build the snapshots, we don't do daily rebuilds of SVN trunk. )

Yeah, I noticed that before I installed it.  Thanks for the info, though.
It's just that I've installed the KDEmod4 packages at least half a dozen different times on fresh Arch installs and have done some upgrades, too, but as it turns out the Kde4 packages released by tanis have always worked better on my end than any of the others I've tried.  That said, I'll probably stick with them until the official release goes into the Arch repos.
Please don't think I'm criticizing any of the kdemod stuff, because I'm not.  It just hasn't worked out all that well for me when I've installed it.  I'm actually very glad it's available for those that want it.
Thanks if it is you that makes it available.
No problem at all, and thanks for the kind words
But, if you have time and patience, it would be nice if you posted a bug about the problems in the bug tracker at http://kdemod.ath.cx/bugs/

    pacman -S qt
    #Qtmod not needed anymore
    pacman -R guidance-power-manager  /or pacman -Rcsn ....
pacman -Syu kdemod                        /or pacman -Syu kdemod-complete
also backup/ remove ~/.kde4 to start with clean config, especially if you have your own plasmoids.
#powerdevil is included in kde now, so other inferior powermanagers might conflict with it.
