Kde4's ktorrent and privoxy/tor

Has anyone else had trouble getting the new kde4 ktorrent to work with privoxy and tor? I have the same settings as the kde3 version and it won't work for some odd reason. I have it set to send tracker communications through localhost:8118. Privoxy and Tor are both running and working in Firefox.
ktorrent says "Unknown Host: Unknown Error" in the tracker status box. If I disable the proxy settings in ktorrent, it does work.
I'm sure that I can't be the only person with this problem. By the way, the test torrent is the i686 iso for Arch 2008.6.

I use opera, not firefox, but to get Tor working with opera i basically configure opera to use a proxy which is: 127.0.0.1 : 8118
Maybe you could try setting up something similar, also I don't run "torify opera." I just run "opera."

  • Tor and Privoxy - what script should I start these with on boot-up?

    I've got Tor and Privoxy running, but wonder where I should put the commands to start them? .xinitrc doesn't work, because I'm starting at run level 5, ie. logging straight into XFCE4.
    I can't put them into the DAEMONS array in rc.conf, can I? *shrug*
    Any offers?
    Cheers.

    Why not? They both provide startupscripts in /etc/rc.d/ which you can add to DAEMONS.
    Sweet, cheers man

  • Tor and privoxy

    Hi I can't get Privoxy working with Tor.
    I followed the Proxy routing with Tor and Privoxy but I can't seem to get it to work.
    I want curl to POST stuff into privoxy which in turn gives it to tor. But Privoxy gives this error:
    Privoxy was unable to socks4a-forward your request www.test.com through localhost: connect_to failed: see logfile for details
    Just try again to see if this is a temporary problem, or check your forwarding settings and make sure that all forwarding servers are working correctly and listening where they are supposed to be listening.
    Privoxy log file:
    Jun 15 20:06:16.001 b75786c0 Fatal error: can't load actions file '/etc/privoxy/default.action': first needed line (409) is invalid: +limit-connect{-}
    It says this line is invalid in my default.action:
    #    +limit-connect{-}                     # All ports are OK
    Which is an commented line ?
    If I uncomment it, I can't even start privoxy because it will give THE SAME ERROR ?!
    My privoxy config: http://pastebin.com/NmtBMw2Z

    The weird thing is that, having used tor previously and knowing the speed it has, i noticed, if i enable tor, and browse any page, its like if i were bypassing the proxy and connecting directly to the internet, ignoring polipo and, therefore, tor......
    Checking the logs, i can tell that tor is working, but i have my doubts about polipo or my settings with switchy proxy.....
    I already tried many times unsuccessfully...
    BTW... the default tor config that gets installed with the package is the one that should be used, isn't it? I mean.. you dont have to touch tor's config: Only download the config file from the tor page and place it in /etc/polipo, am i right?

  • Privoxy - tor

    Hi!
    Today I installed Privoxy and Tor. I follow instructions from Tor site (I had privoxy - tor on Arch one month ago ) and doesn't work. I also try to turn firewall off and it same. When I check the site Tor detector:
    http://serifos.eecs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/ipaddr.pl?tor=1
    it says: You are NOT using Tor and show my IP. One month ago work very well but now I don;t know why doesn't work.
    Thanks,

    Thanks,
    You added forward-socks4a / localhost:9050 to your privoxy config file /etc/privoxy/config?
    privoxy was updated a few days ago. Your working config file was possible renamed to /etc/privoxy/config.pacsave.
    Jürgen
    Yes, I did.
    I did run tor runasdaemon 1 as user. Now I could run just as root.
    Don't you use the startup script /etc/rc.d/tor?
    tor should setuid tor if you use the default config.

  • [SOLVED] Ktorrent and magnet links

    I use KDE and try to use the "native" apps for integration and so.... but ktorrent is giving me a hard time when trying to download magnet links (more and more common this days)
    I click on a magnet link, ktorrent grabs it but never reaches the point where he adds the download itself.... like if it got stuck...
    Anyone else has the same problem as me?
    Thanks!!

    Mr. Alex wrote:I also face this issue and figured out that you have to configure the protocol settings correctly. Like this. If you turn off DHT - you most likely won't be able to use magnet links at all.
    I have those options activated (plus some other ones)......... i didnt have the patience to wait 10 minutes and see if it finally ends up working... will try though since it has allways been pretty slow for getting the magnet links.....

    You might have to symlink some data/config directories (the one with program's data about downloaded files).
    thanks, solved the problem.
    the user profiles dir in wine is under windows dir instead of "documents and setings"
    thanks luke

  • How can I download and install Tor?

    I tried to download Tor for OS X 64 bit on my MacBook and was not allowed.  How can I get around the error?

    My question is it safe? Obiously it is not in the app store. Tor sound good but with that said their are a lot of BS sites.

  • Upgraded and now tor doesn't work.

    before doing the following my system was great consistency. but accidentally when go around with some issues i typed this command when upgrade system:
    pacman -Syu --ignore filesystem && pacman -S filesystem --force
    from news: https://www.archlinux.org/news/filesyst … equired-1/
    after that tor daemon can not start properly..
    i use default config with tor. and when i try to use these command to star tor, it's fail.
    sudo rc.d restart tor

    this is ouput of : strace sudo rc.d restart tor > tor.log 2>&1
    there are some "open" "access" "no such file directory" but i can not understand what kind of information it give.
    can you make a parse?
    i downgraded which packages were upgraded with --ignore flag. after downgrade i still can not start tor.

  • Chromium and privoxy

    I'd like to use chromium with privoxy to block ads, but I can't get it to work. I installed and start privoxy, and it works fine with Firefox and Konqueror. In Chromium I go to the proxy settings and set it to manually specify them. Then I put the proxy IP (127.0.0.1) and the port (8118), but chromium continues to connect directly to the internet instead of connecting to the proxy. Has anyone got a proxy to work with Chromium? How?

    I use privoxy with chromium but ended up using a small script to call chromium from wmii's C+a menu
    #!/bin/bash
    /opt/chromium-browser/chrome --enable-plugins -proxy-server=http://127.0.0.1:8118 --homepage

    A locate libplasma comes up with versions 3 and 4 but no 2 and a pacman -Qo tells me libplasma is part of kdebase-workspace which is prolly hard to downgrade (but what do I know!).
    Not that I hate emerald, but I do prefer kde4
    Any ideas out there?

    Okay, so now I know which package it belongs to. Thing is, I'm already proud that I've achieved that! As for compiling against the current plasma lib, I'm afraid I haven't got a clue what you are talking about (but more than willing to learn if some compassionate soul will hold my hand or point me in the right direction).

  • What to install for a "secure" computer

    Hi,
    I was recently reading something online that made me quite paranoid...I always have used FF with adblockplus, but that's about it. So I went ahead and installed noscript, and privoxy + tor. What else can I install to ensure a super secure machine? Which firewall is recommended?

    In all seriousness, Fedora is probably a good bet for a secure distro because it's package manager has package signing (Arch does not yet), meaning it would be harder for someone to "trick" your computer into installing a malicious package. Obviously, there are still plenty of people using Arch, so this is not a huge threat. Fedora also has SELinux installed and configured by default, I think. SELinux gives each app a more finely tuned set of permissions. Theoretically, I could run App A and it could change the setting for App B just because it has access to my whole home directory. SELinux fixes that and much more advanced stuff.
    If you are only afraid of the scary internet corporations (Google, Your ISP, Your Government), like I am, you can also look into installing Ghostery Firefox extension or setting NoScript to block "Web Bugs" (it's in the advanced tab, I believe).
    Also make sure that all cookies are deleted when Firefox closes.
    Also make sure to block "flash cookies." Do a search for LSO's or install BetterPrivacy Firefox extension.
    Use Ixquick or Scroogle for your web searches instead of Google.
    Software firewalls are redundant if you are behind a router, so that shouldn't help you sleep at night.

  • Tor+privoxy+chrome Issue

    Im trying to get tor working with google chrome through privoxy
    Tor installed and runs. Installed vidalia as well
    Privoxy was installed succesfully
    Installed google chrome dev through AUR
    tried setting it up with this command :
    chromium --proxy-server="localhost:8118"      Only I replaced "chromium" with "google-chrome"
    Error is this:
    [1337:1350:3063716153:ERROR:object_proxy.cc(239)] Failed to call method: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files
    Created new window in existing browser session.

    I read up on /etc/hosts.allow but the man page and whatever I could find on the wiki or through google weren't very helpful. I found some references for other things that need to be added to /etc/hosts.allow so I've been copying those but none of them are working.
    So I've added the following things (one of them at a time) to /etc/hosts.allow, then restarted Tor and Privoxy and gotten the exact same error.
    ALL: LOCAL
    privoxy: 127.0.0.1: ALLOW
    tor: 127.0.0.1: ALLOW
    ALL: LOCAL
    privoxy: 127.0.0.1
    tor: 127.0.0.1
    privoxy: 192.168.1.100
    tor: 192.168.1.100
    privoxy: 192.168.1.100: ALLOW
    tor: 192.168.1.100: ALLOW
    privoxy: LOCAL
    tor: LOCAL
    I've mostly been winging it for those entries based on what I read on how to get other daemons working so I've probably been doing it horribly wrong.  Again, all answers appreciated.

  • Tor working timeout with privoxy

    Hi,
    I just installed privoxy for use with tor. I installed it and added forward-socks5 / localhost:9050 . to the config file as described in the wiki. However when pointing firefox at 127.0.0.1 8118 it just times out.
    Tor is working fine and the privoxy service is started in systemd. The privoxy log file is empty though.
    I've tried changing the config file to socks4a changing it to my hostname "laptop" and 127.0.0.1 nothing works.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    That should work just fine (I use privoxy all the time and started tor extra for you right now btw). The only thing: you have to add 127.0.0.1 to the "No Proxy for" field, if you want to point your browser to privoxy directly. Otherwise you get an empty response for localhost.
    If it does not work still, check "systemctl status tor" for an established circuit.
    Thanks but I realised shortly after posting. Privoxy is a http proxy not a socks proxy. I didnt even think to check what type it was.  Its made tor a hell of a lot quicker then using it directly though which is nice.

  • [SOLVED] Unable config elinks using tor/privoxy

    Hi everyone, these days i am trying to config tor and privoxy to surf anonymous network using elinks. I read tor/privoxy wiki but i can't recognise what i've done wrong. I added "forward-socks5 / localhost:9050 ." to /etc/privoxy/config file and modify .elinks/elinks.conf as follow:
    set protocol.http.proxy.host = "localhost:8118"
    set protocol.https.proxy.host = "localhost:8118"
    restarted tor/privoxy service (am using systemd)
    and the result when i open elinks with check.torproject.org is a message notices that forwarding is failure.
    Forwarding failure
    Privoxy was unable to socks5-forward your request http:..... through 127.0.0.1: SOCKS5 TTL expired
    ....blah..blah...
    Any suggestion?. Thanks in advanced!

    Double check that:
    forward-socks5 / localhost:9050 .
    Realy is at the end of /etc/privoxy/config
    Then stop both tor.service and privoxy.service
    systemctl stop tor.service
    systemctl stop privoxy.service
    ... kind of off topic... but also edit the tor.service file to send KillSignal=SIGINT otherwise it will waite 30sec to stop each time. i.e. it will add 30sec's to your shutdown time which sucks...
    /usr/lib/systemd/system/tor.service
    [Unit]
    Description=Anonymizing Overlay Network
    [Service]
    Type=forking
    GuessMainPID=yes
    EnvironmentFile=/etc/conf.d/tor
    ExecStart=/usr/bin/tor -f $TOR_CONF $TOR_ARGS
    ExecReload=/bin/kill -HUP $MAINPID
    KillSignal=SIGINT
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    Open another terminal, or screen (if your using screen), and tail the journal so you can see tor connect
    journalctl -f
    Now start tor.service
    systemctl start tor.service
    It can take a min or two to make a full connectoin to the Tor network.
    After tor is complete, start privoxy.service
    systemctl start privoxy.service
    Now, try to use the privoxy "HTTP" proxy on port "8118"... Yes, privoxy is an "HTTP" proxy not SOCKS proxy. If you must use a SOCKS proxy then you can connect to the Tor proxy itself on 9050, which is a SOCKS proxy.
    elinks may not be the best choice for secure Tor browsing. I am not sure if elinks leaks DNS or not. You may want to watch wireshark to make sure.
    I would sugjest Firefox and go to about:config and togle: network.proxy.socks_remote_dns to TRUE
    Then install plugins: NoScript, CS Lite (i.e. cookie safe lite, for White Listing cookies), HTTPS-Everywhere (from the EFF), and Ad BlockPluss

  • I'm using tor program and i cant add flash player to fire fox

    My God, what a pain in the arse this is!... Have finally got there after a very stressful few hours... Firstly, click on this very helpful link and follow the instructions, but there's more you have to do too...
    https://botusharov.wordpress.com/2011/01/09/how-to-watch-videos-restricted-in-your-country-using-tor-and-portable-firefox-explained-for-bbc-iplayer-videos/
    and when your tor browser is open, go to the tools at the top left and click on 'add-ons' then 'extentions'... in the 'no script' section click 'options' and choose the 'embeddings' tab... uncheck 'forbid Adobe Flash' press 'OK'...
    then click the options button for the Torbutton 1.4.4.1 section and choose the 'security settings' tab... uncheck 'disable plugins during tor usage'... then OK...
    then simply close it all and restart Tor... it works, 100%... have just managed to upload photos onto facebook in Vietnam after days of failed attempts...
