Keep a finder-window layout?

hi.
I've made a set of icons to be downloaded from my website. I designed the finderwindow with the right size, a background image and the icons lined up the way I want.
How can I make sure that the window layout stays the same when the downloaded folder is opened on another computer?
I tried making a simple arcive. that didn't work.
I've tried to make a .dmg-file to mount on the desktop, but I couln't get it to work either.
(The firefox installer is a perfect example of what I want to do)
I'm using X.3.9 but I want it to work on as many OSX-versions as possible.

Hi!
Yes, it is possible to rename the background image file with a . at the start. You can either use the Terminal to do it (but unfortunately I've forgotten how to do this!) or you can download an application like "Onyx" which can 'show invisible files' for you. Once you can see all of the invisible files everywhere, then you can create them too, by renaming your image file with a dot at the start. I think that should work.
I'm not sure how to stop the disk image opening in column-view, though. Perhaps you could contact Panic (the people at the Iconfactory) or whoever wrote the tutorial, and ask them?

• How to keep default Finder window size and location from Mac server

Working in an office of three people. Mac mini server (not sure of the OS; I think it's Snow Leopard). We each use iMacs with Mavericks. I have my default new Finder window set to open "customers" folder, which resides on the server, in a specific orientation. If either of my co-workers opens "customers" and resizes that window on their machines, it retains that size & location when I open it again on my machine (as I'm sure it does to them after I "fix" my own window).
Is there any way to change this so that one's own machine will remember the window prefs? I mean, we're not opening on the server itself, so in my mind it should not retain the last open position, right?
I know I could set my default folder to Home, then go to customers from the sidebar, but that almost defeats the purpose of the default folder.
thanks in advance!!

Hey Macdaddy,
This happens all the time with our server at work. The server window never opens in the same place twice, and it can be annoying.
There are third-party window management tools out there, but what I did was use a macro program called Keyboard Maestro (since I already owned it).
Among the many things Keyboard Maestro can do is manipulate a window. I created a macro that moves it to a specific point (in my case, the upper left corner of the screen) and then resizes it to a specific width and height in pixels. I then assigned the macro a keyboard shortcut.
Now, when I mount the server, I can use the keyboard shortcut and the window is right where I want it.
There are other programs that just move windows, and I tried a couple. But Keyboard Maestro is more elegant in my opinion, and it does a whole lot more if you choose to go that route.
Hope this helps.

• Find window in Safari

Is there are way to keep the find window visible in Safari? It goes away when I go to a new webpage.

You should see it in Safari - Preferences - Extensions.
As the link says, there's a 'trigger key' option, which you would probably disable. After that, unless you're typing in a text field, anything you type will be searched for & highlighted on the page.

I want to change the default size for any Finder window while in Cover Flow mode. I successfully set the Cover Flow mode, as well as a few other options about icon size, etc., to cover all new Finder windows. However, I do not see any way to maintain the size of the Finder window to keep me at the same default size. Is there any way I can set this?

• How do I keep my new finder window preference set to open a certain folder on the server?

Since switching to Lion, my new finder window preference keeps resetting itself to default. When I open a new finder window I want it to be a certain folder on our server. This setting was persistent in Snow Leopard. Now I have to keep setting it back, sometimes more than once a day. Please help, its very time consuming to have to click through to get to the folder I use most often every time I open a finder window.

Enabling thirds-party cookies is the default and if there aren't any other changes made then Firefox will show "Remember History"
Choosing the "Use custom settings for history" setting doesn't make any changes.
If Firefox shows the "Use custom settings for history" setting then that is an indication that at least one of the history and cookie settings are not the default to make you aware that changes were If all History settings are default then you see "Firefox will: (Never) Remember History" and the custom settings are hidden.
• Spotlight (& Find) window keeps refreshing

When I search in Spotlight or open a Finder window and put something in the Search box, the windows will start to get populated, then clear out and refresh instead of just resorting. Does this about every 5-10 seconds.
I don't believe it used to do this.
Any way to keep it from doing this?

• I want to stylise a finder window on a CD-ROM... that is, when a CD data disc I've created is inserted into the Mac and double-clicked, the finder window has the layout and background I've chosen. Is there any Apple software which will do this?

I've created a CD-ROM which essentially has a website on it.
I've added an autorun for PC users (assuming those guys still exist) which launches "index.html". So no worries there.
For Mac users, as autolaunch isn't an option (correct me if I'm wrong?), I want to control the look and layout of the Finder window which opens when the disc is inserted and the CD icon is double-clicked. What's the best Apple software to use to do this?
Thanks in advance.

Nice to hear your story.

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

• How do I keep icons from moving around when I close the finder window and reopen?

Hi,
This may happen if the PDF is opened inside the browser by the PDF plugin.
In '''Tools''' ( or '''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Options''' > '''Applications''' look for or type PDF in the search box and for the '''Action''' on the right change it to '''Save File''' or click '''Use other...''' and browse to the PDF main exe and select.

• How do I keep the finder in Yosemite from restoring the tabs that were open last time I closed a finder window?

I find it annoying that, if I have a finder window with several open tabs and I close the whole window at once, the next time I click the finder it will open up that same window with multiple tabs I don't need anymore instead of my default location. I've looked all over for a way to turn off this behavior, any ideas?

ok, first of all I haven't given up on you yet.
I just restarted my computer and had reopen files checked, the settings remained the same.
I restarted without remember open windows checked and the setting is still the same.
I hit cmd n multiple times and the setting still opens my finder window to the specified folder.
So this is a bug and worthy of calling apple support about fixing it for you.
also feel free to make some feedback so they might know to fix it.

Maybe someone will come along and know the answer but it's best to file feedback when you see a bug.

• Finder Window - Date Modified Column Keeps Changing

When I open a Finder window, change the size of the "Date Modified" column then close the Finder window, the next time I open the same Finder window, the "Date Modified" column will compress the size of the column.
Why isn't Finder 10.9 maintaining my column changes?
Any assitance or insight whould be appreciated.

I solved the scrunched Date Modified column header in a similar fashion but added the Date Added field, which fixed the width of both Date columns.
After doing so, I now find both Date-oriented columns display and read dynamically the actual date and time.
I'm now looking for a solution to that issue, explained here:

• Finder window keeps opening up and popping up in front of all windows

Every minute or so a finder window opens and pops up in front of all open window - including the window I am working in (no matter which application). It does not even open to my regular finder - it opens to a sub folder that is on the sidebar as a shortcut. Might have started after security update that was not necessarily completed because after 6 hours I tried to cancel, then force quit, it wouldn't work, so I forced the computer to restart.

• Finder window keeps popping out when booting up the computer

Lately I've noticed whenever I shut down the computer with the "Reopen windows when logging back in" uncheck, this Finder window will pop out the next time I startup the computer. Still new to Apple and am not sure any settings that I may have set before this.
I just want a clear desktop when I boot up the computer and not greeted by this system Finder window.

Finder does not obey the rules of the 'Reopen windows' dialogue box. It will reopen any Finder window that was not closed when you shutdown. This was also true in Snow Leopard and isn't part of the 'Resume' feature itself.
The only way to not see that window when you restart is to close it before you shutdown!
