Keep airport express mine

i run my clearwire modem to my airport express, and it works great, but how do i block the wireless signal to my computer only? i live in an apartment complex with alot of campers choking my access and making it slow. help please!

Hello bigglesjunior...Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The best way is to use wireless encryption, preferably WPA or WPA2 to prevent others from using your wireless network.
To set up wireless security on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, using the Airport Admin Utility, check these settings:
Change Wireless Security
- Wireless Security: WPA Personal or WPA2 Personal
- Password: <enter your desired network password or phrase>
- Verify Password: <re-enter your desired network password or phrase>
- Encryption Type: WPA and WPA2
- Click "OK"
Base Station Options - WAN Ethernet Port
- Enable SNMP Access (unchecked)
- Enable Remote Configuration (unchecked)
- Enable Remote Printer Access (unchecked)

  • What location do I keep Airport Express?

Do I keep Airport Express next to Airport Extreme or where I want to extend my home network on the 2nd floor of my home?

You did not tell us whether you plan to connect the AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet cable connection, or whether you want to try to have the Express connect to the Extreme using wireless.
If you can connect the AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection, then you can locate the AirPort Express in the center of the area where you need more wireless coverage upstairs. This is the by far the best way to extend a network, since it results in the fastest speeds on the network.
If the Express will connect to the Extreme using a wireless connection, then it would be located approximately half way between the AirPort Extreme and the area upstairs where you need more wireless coverage. The reason for this is that the AirPort Express can only extend the quality of signal that it receives from the Extreme, so it needs to be located where it can receive a good signal in order to extend a good signal.
When you extend using only a wireless connection, the maximum potential speed on the network will drop by about half. This loss will not occur if you connect the AirPort Express using a wired Ethernet cable connection, since there is no signal loss in a wire.

  • Problem Keeping Airport Express Connected

    Hi,
I have just bought the latest version of Airport Express to replace my original Airport Express.
After updating to Mountain Lion, I was regularly getting error 15006 with my old express so I thought it was time to upgrade!
I have set up my new Airport express to join my existing network and use Airport to stream itunes to my hi-fi. However, I keep losing connection and the Airport Utility shows ! and when I click on Airport Express Icon that tells me "Device not Found" and that the airport express was previously part of my network.
Rebooting Computer sometimes solves the problem but I have had to try resetting. When I do manage to get connected, I keep the connection for as long as I am playing music. If I stop and restart later the connection is lost.
I also have an Ipad. Whilst writing this I tried and sucessfully connected to my Airport Express. I now checked Airport Utility and my connection had been restored.
What's going on? Is there anything I need to do to maintain connection?
    Jim

    Hi,
    Thanks for your comment.
I have a BT Homehub 3 and I believe there are Some unresolved issues with using airport with this router.
    Does anyone have any suggestions.

  • MacBook Does Not See HP Photosmart C4480 Connected to Airport Express

I have an AT&T 2wire wireless & router as my internet access. Today I turned off the 2wire wireless and was able to set up an Apple-based home network with an Airport Extreme Base Station and Airport Express which I configured to extend the AEBS network. Both the AEBS and Airport Express show "green" for setup.
    iTunes sees the Airport Express.
The Airport Express sees a HP Photosmart C4480 printer I have connected to it via the USB port.
    - I do not have the C4480 driver installed on the MacBook.
PROBLEM: The Macbook sees the AEBS and Airport Express but DOES NOT see the HP printer connected to the Airport Express. When I go to System Preferences > Printer > Add Printer it does not see the HP and I don't know the IP address to add it. What can anyone recommend?
    Thank you

Apple Tech Support solved this problem quickly and easily. In short, the USB connected printer was pointed to the computer and not the Airport Express. Here's what they ran me through:
    - Assumes the Airport Express sees the printer as connected via USB
    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
    2. Regardless of the printers you see, click the "+" button to add a printer
    3. Select the Default icon
    4. Check the Kind... should be Bonjour
    5. Select the printer type connected to the Airport Express... the system will start to add such a printer
    6. Ensure the Location is the Airport Express (mine was previously pointed to the MacBook)
-- You can change the name here is you like also such as "Kitchen HP Photosmart c4480)... recommend a different name than the original one installed so you know which one to remove later
    7. Select Add
    8. Remove the original printer which is pointing to the MacBook
You should be good to go.... Key points: Bonjour and Location as the Airport Express

  • Can Print through my Airport Express, Can't get on line tho'....

Does any one know whats wrong with my set up? (it used to work fine)
I can access the internet when I connect straight from my DSL router to my Mac and at the same time can print via my Airport and usb connection.
However when I connect my cable to the Airport I lose contact with my DSL router.
I know my Mac can see and talk to my Airport
I know my Mac can see and talk to my Router
I can't figure out why my Airport can't talk to my router
The light on the Airport is green and I have done all the re-starts advised in the Apple Help site.
I am tripping up on cables and its the 21st Century, has anyone had, and fixed this problem or do I need a new Airport Express. (mines 2 years old.)
    Thanks
    Power Book G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

It sounds like you have two routers in your network configuration...the DSL router and the AirPort Express Base Station (AX). In this configuration, you will need to set up the AX as a bridge.
To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a bridge, temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility (located in the \Applications\Utilities folder), make these settings:
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
    - Apply the new setting.

  • How do I keep my 2006 mac mini from "disconnecting" with airport express?

how do I connect my airport express to my mac mini and keep it connected?

Thanks!  I upgraded the firmware on my Medialink Wireless N router, and connected it to my Airport Express via an ethernet cable.  The Epson Artisan 835 printer is connected via USB to my Airport Express.  Everything seems more stable since updating the firmware (from late 2010 to late 2011 version).  I did this at 8:30pm and at 10:25pm am still able to print.  I'll give you an update in the morning.  Thanks for your help!

  • I keep getting this message An unknown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device " AirPort Express".

Please help. I have been having major difficulties with my Airport Express. It used to work fine but for the last year or so it continually disconnects, skips and ultimately drops out and itunes gives me this message "An unknown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device “AirPort Express”. I keep resetting, unplugging, restarting Itunes, or my computer. It works for a couple of hours and then I get the message again. It's making me nuts and was a bummer at last week's party when we had no music, yet again. I have looked up the support discussions, but there is no answer as to how I can fix it. I am currently using Mt Lion OS. Does this have anything to do with it? Checked for software updates, but nada.
    Any suggestions.

It may be possible the where you have the AX located may just be in a spot where it does not get a good signal even it is only 8 feet away.
I suggest that you download and install iStumbler. You will use it to determine the signal quality by making Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) measurements. This will be easiest if your Mac is a laptop ... or you can borrow one. When taking the measurements, you only want your "main" AirPort running as this is what we want to measure at the location of the AX.
SNR (in dB) = Signal (in dBm) - Noise (in dBm)
You can easily find the Signal and Noise value using System Profiler on your Mac laptop.
ref: Click on the Apple icon on the menu bar > About This Mac > More Info... > Contents > Network > AirPort > Interfaces > en1 > Current Network Information > Find your wireless network > Signal / Noise
While your still in the System Profiler, note the value for Transmit Rate.
These values should be negative numbers. For example, mine currently read: -67 dBm / -95 dBm, with a transmit rate of 27 (Mbps). Plugging in these numbers yield: SNR = -67 - (-95) = 28. My Mac Mini is about four rooms away from my AEBS with about five walls between them. As you can see, the signal is still quite useable ... but the bandwidth is minimal, especially for streaming.
    SNR Guideline
    40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
    Please post back your results.

  • Airport Express 802.11n keeps disconnecting Airplay with iPhone and Macbook Air

I purchased this Airport Express on Jan 7, 2012. It was working fine.
I used it for airplay only to play my itunes music to my speakers. My speakers are connected to an amplifier that is inturn connected to the Airport Express via an optical cable. I have not use it with a printer. I do not use it as a wifi to access the internet.
It was working fine until about a month or so ago when after playing a few songs it would disconnect. Now after less than 2-3mins it would disconnect. When I try to manually reconnect with my iPhone or Macbook Air, it would say that is unable to connect to the Airport.
If I keep trying, eventually it will connect and then after 2-3 mins it would cut off again. The amber light would show contineously.
I am at wits end. I have not changed the arrangement at all since Jan. What could have happened?
About a month ago there were an update to Airport Utility. I ran that update. Could that be the problem?
I'd appreciate if someone could help me. The warranty will run out a less than a month. How timely isn't it.
Is the router broken. If so why does it still allow me to use Airplay but only for a few minutes (less than a song)?
Thanks in advance for any help and or advice.
    Mike

Unfortunately there could be any number of possible causes. Your router could be at fault, or the Express, or something else that is affecting both. To troubleshoot this issue you would have to eliminate or significantly reduce one or more of these possibilities.
Try performing a "hard reset" of the Express and configure it anew. Sometimes an internal parameter becomes corrupted that only a "hard reset" can fix.
The following is an excerpt from:
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
    Hard reset
Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil until you see the status light (LED) start to flash amber rapidly, which should occur after about five seconds.
Release the button, and the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule will hard reset.
... but read the entire document to ensure you do it correctly. An Express that has been "hard reset" will create an open network with the name "Apple Network nnnnnn" where nnnnnn = the last few digits of its MAC address.
If you do not see the network with that name, the "hard reset" did not take effect, which will happen if you do not hold its little reset button long enough. In that case do it again.
Following the "hard reset", reconfigure your Express.
Failing that, position the Express closer to your wireless router. This may not be a practicable long term solution for you but it will minimize the possibility that wireless interference is causing the problem.
Consider substituting another router, to eliminate that as the cause.
Finally, you could take your Express to Apple who may simply offer you an exchanged unit. It will most likely operate perfectly well for them so you will not be able to demonstrate this failure mode, but you can explain you did all that I suggested above without success.

  • I am unable to use apps on my iPhone 3GS, apple TVs & iPad mini - Airport Express

I currently have an airport express and Netgear ADSL2+ modem.  I also have an iPhone 3GS, 2 apple TVs, iPad mini, and iMac (circa 2008). The only device that is working properly is the 2008 iMac. All other devices show that I have 5 bar signal but do not allow me to use any of the apps (ie: Netflix, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) I have ran speedtest on all devices, ping and download speed are as expected. Ping: 150 ms, Download: 2.7 mbps, Upload 0.68 mbps from iMac. The only difference is that upload speed on iPhone and iPad mini does not register. I feel like the issue is with the modem or the airport? Do I need the airport extreme even though I show 5 bar signal strength on all devices or do I need a new modem from Verizon in hopes that it will get me a better connection on a device that they support? (they do not support the Netgear modem I currrently have).

iPhone 4 isn't supposed to be able to mirror:

  • Can I use a airport express to get internet connection to a Mac Mini that doesn't have wireless by adding it to my existing wireless network?

I bought a first gen Mac Mini for our daughter and it doesn't have internal airport adapter and was wondering if I got a airport express can I plug it in my daughters room and use it as a local router and just use the eithernet connect from it.  Or would a airport extreme work better for this job.  I have a wireless cable modem that we connect to.  I also have a second question I have a iMac G4 that picks up the wireless signal but will not connect to it does it have to be a Apple airport for it to work or should it be able to connect to any broadcasted signal.  Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure I quite understand. Do you wish to use the AEX to provide a wireless connection for a device that has an Ethernet port but no wireless capability of its own? You wish to use it in place of a wireless card that isn't internally installed? If so, the answer is, "Yes." It will work as a wireless access point. But you must have an extant wireless network because the AEX won't have an Internet connection when used in this way.
If you have an existing wireless network with a wireless router connected to your cable/DSL model or your modem is a wireless router as well, then the AEX may connect to it in bridge mode. Note that AEXs don't always play nice with non-Apple routers. Some work; others don't.

  • How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac

How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac?
The question pretty much says it all.
I have a Mac Mini with an attached 3TB Hard Drive used for Time Machine Backups.
I have an Airport Extreme base station which services that machine plus several others.
I would like to backup my new iMac and a MacBook Pro to the Mac Mini.
What do I need to do on the mini to export that hard drive so that it can be used as a Time Machine target from the other systems?
    All systems are running 10.6.8.

Well you would have to do backups over a network which is much slower and has highest chance of becoming corrupt. I think your best option would be to get an apple time capsule to act as a network and back if thats how you wanna do that

  • I have a time capsule and airport express one floor lower, the signal keeps dropping. Would an airport extreme give me a longer range for wifi?

I have several computers. My equipment is upstairs in a house, apple time capsule and downstairs airport express. Lately the downstairs computer keeps disconnecting from the internet. Would replacing the airport express with and airport extreme give me a greater range for my wifi connections?

Yes.  Question is... would the difference be enough.
The extreme has a bigger & more powerful antena array. But if that alone still doesn't suffice, you also have the option to use the express to EXTEND from the Extreme.

  • I can no longer access my Airport Express Base Station. When I plug it in, it keeps flashing orange. I cannot see it in the Airport Utility.

    How do I fix this

If you're comfortable resetting all settings, unplug it, hold down the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug it back in - keep holding it for another 10-20s until the amber light flashes
Then, open airport utility, now you should be able to see the device either on-screen or in the upper left under 'other wi-fi devices'

  • Mac mini unable to locate airport express

Since getting new modem from Comcast Xfinity, Mac mini (Airport Utility) has been unable to locate Airport Extreme and Airport Express. Can anyone help?

OK, you have a choice you cannot use the Extreme as an extender, you can use it as your primary router or use the Comcast device as your primary router. If you choose to use the Extreme as your primary router then you need to call Comcast and ask them how to turn off the router abillities on their device. If you want to use the Comcast's router then you need to remove the Extreme from the equation and use the Express as an extender.

I am using TM Unifi with an ASUS RT-N18U Wi-Fi router.  I would like to know could I use Apple AirPort Time Capsule to extend (repeater, booster) my Wi-Fi to a part of the house where the Wi-Fi signal is poor
Yes,, if you plan to connect the AirPort Time Capsule to the ASUS router using an Ethernet cable connection that will remain fixed and permanently installed at all times.
No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Time Capsule connect wirelessly and extend the Asus WiFi signal, since it would not be compatible with another manufacturer's router for that purpose.
Another way of saying the same thing here would be that if you want to extend the network wirelessly, it will take two Apple routers to do so
