Keep all unplayed episodes - bug?

Hi everybody!
My iPod/iTunes7 is killing me. I have selected "Keep: All unplayed episodes" in the iTunes podcast options because I want iTunes to automatically delete all podcasts that I have listened to on my iPod.
If I manually mark a podcast as "played" in iTunes7 it does what I want; deletes that podcast from my iPod.
But it doesn't work the other way. If I listen to a podcast on my iPod (and the podcast is marked as played on the iPod), the podcast is reset to unplayed on both the ipod and in iTunes on first sync.
This is annoying!
Please advice!
I've tried restoring my iPod, and I've also installed the latest iPod-update.

* Four weeks ago my Apple headphones stopped working
* Three weeks ago my I bought the new Apple headphones which were designed to not stay in my ears
* Two weeks ago because my new (old headphones) that hang around the neck had not arrived I fumbled my I-Pod, dropped it and it stopped working.
* Last week I got my new replacement I-pod which I bought (two sets of headphones -- only ordered one).
* This morning my I-pod locks up, had to go to Google to finally solve the problem.
* For the past couple days I have been relistening to podcasts because of this silly ignoring my request to only keep unplayed episodes problem.
* Today when I looked for E-mail tech support it was hidden or unavailble.
==> My first Nano was great while it lasted, but needless to say this is the last Apple product I will ever buy.

  • "Keep: all unplayed episodes" doesn't work all the time ???

I subscribe to a couple of podcasts. I have my settings set to "Keep: all unplayed episodes". This setting works just fine on 90% of my podcasts, but on two, the only way for podcasts I've of which I've listed to disapper is if I delete them manually. Does anyone else have this problem? How do I fix it? I've tried unsubscribing and resubscribing, but that doesn't do the trick.
    Thanks,
    Tim

  • Sort Order of All Unplayed Episodes

The sort order of all unplayed episodes is from Newest to Oldest, which is backwards for me.
Why would I listen to the Newest episode first? It completely breaks any chronology of the podcasts!
I found that you can change this for individual podcasts if you find the details by clicking on the podcast title to open its preferences, but the big list does not have the option.
Please, give me the option to ORDER THE UNPLAYED EPISODES OLDEST AT TOP TO NEWEST AT BOTTOM!
    Thanks, in advance.

This did the trick for me, Harry. Thanks!
I was surprised to see you can/must set this on a podcast-by-podcast basis, but it is hard to argue with having finer control. Oldest to newest seems like a slightly more logical default, but that may just be personal preference.
Not to split off in a new direction, but if I then subscribe to a podcast in Podcasts app that I already subscribe to in iTunes, is it recommended I turn off syncing between iTunes and my iPhone for that podcast? Or will this question basically go away when iOS 6.0 is released?
Do the Podcasts app and the Music/iPod app share podcast files? Or will they be duplicated on my iPhone?
    Tom
The podcasts will duplicate themselves on your device. I turned off podcast syncing on my devices. But the weird thing is that when I sync, podcasts then copy themselves to my iTunes library. Either sync or don't, but don't copy to both.

  • Syncing all unplayed episodes

    Hi
    Does anyone have this happening.
You have iTunes set up to sync all unplayed episodes of podcasts but this doesnt seem to work with the video podcasts, I have to also listen to them to get them removed from the sync as well as view them.
Is there a way round this without using smart folders.
    Thanks
    Chris

Same problem, checked "Sync Unplayed" and the video podcasts are still left on iPod after being viewed. But good to know that if you play them as music helps

When you're listening to a podcast, slide the current artwork up from the bottom, and you will reveal the control panel. Adjust the little switch in the middle so that it is pointing North, instead of Northwest. That will fix your problem.

  • Where is Download All for all unplayed episodes in podcast?

After subscribing new podcast, is there anyway to download all episodes for me to go thur them offline without Internet access?
Autodownload is on, all episodes are unplayed, and "Episodes to keep" is set to "All episodes".
Anyone knows where the most basic function in the world "Download all" is? Or it's hiding somewhere I missed?

  • Unchecking "Sync all unplayed episodes of... podcasts" DELETES THEM ALL?

From iTunes 7.4 to 7.5, Apple has made a horrible thing even worse. Previously, if you left "Sync podcasts" checked on your home computer and plugged your iPod into your work computer, all your podcasts would be deleted because the iPod would turn on the work computer's auto-syncing on, and there were zero podcasts on the work computer. The only workaround for this was to uncheck "Sync podcasts" on your home computer immediately after syncing all your podcasts.
Well, they decided this wasn't stupid enough, so now, in 7.5, unchecking "Sync podcasts" on your home computer IMMEDIATELY DELETES the podcasts from the iPod. There is now no way whatsoever to keep podcasts on your iPod if you regularly connect your iPod to two Macs, short of downloading each and every podcast to BOTH computers.
If I'm missing something, please let me know. 'Til then, I'll be downgrading to 7.1.1.

It looks like this issue was fixed with the iPod 1.2.3 software update. Unchecking "Sync Podcasts" still deletes the podcasts from the iPod, but there's no longer any need to uncheck it, since other copies of iTunes (like the one at the office) no longer turn on "Sync Podcasts" automatically.

  • Unplayed Episodes Question

I have my podcast settings to "Keep all unplayed episodes" But this only seems to apply and work if it relating to itunes only. To clarify: I watch nearly all my podcasts on my nano ipod but when synchronising, itunes doesn't seem to recognise they have already been watched, even when the blue dot has disappeared on the ipod. Is this normal or is there a way round this? It means I have to manually delete all the ones I have listened too manually. Which leads me to my second question: When deleting it always asks whether to cancel, keep file, or move to trash. Is there an automatic way of choosing move to trash? It is very annoying to have to do this with every file I want to delete.
    Many thanks in advance

There doesn't seem to be this option as when I do this I only have "Do not auto delete". So that would imply it is already set.
    Yes, I agree.
Also it is the podcast episode I WANT to auto delete after watching. (unless I actually want to keep it for a while of course.) The podcast itself I would want to keep for further episodes.
Of course. It would make no sense to autodelete the podcast itself. The command I'm talking is applied to the podcast, and deletes podcast episodes after they've been played. Why not try toggling it off and then back on again, then click Refresh? (It's a bit incredible to me that this most obvious of operations is so difficult to accomplish, but that's iTunes for you!)
Just for the record, in iTunes Preferences | Podcasts , I have "Keep: All unplayed episodes". When my nano is connected and I select it on the left side under Devices, then click the Podcasts tab, I have "Sync all unplayed episode of All podcasts".
Before I discovered the Auto Delete option, I had the same problem as you, and now it's fixed. Sorry it didn't help you!

  • Unplayed Episodes/Stations- how to choose to begin playing oldest unplayed episode?

The release notes say this is an option but I can't figure out how. (The only options in settings are "my podcast" order, most recent and manual- but I don't see any way to manually adjust the order, either.)
Also, apparently there is no way to get a list of unplayed episodes by episode? The "unplayed" station groups them by podcast- but I don't want to listen to all unplayed episodes of a single podcast in a row.

    seconded...
they seem to have thrown out most of the stuff they fixed after we complained about it with the first version.
my app is also showing "unplayed" undownloaded eps... I'm not setup to subscribe and download on my ipod it is network off most of the time anyway. I have itunes checking through the day so I can get my stack of new shows when I sync after work.

  • Unplayed episodes oldest first not working?

With 2.0, I seem to have lost the ability to listen to podcasts in My Stations from oldest to newest; I can't even list them oldest first, they all show up newest on top and are played from newest to oldest, which is not what I want.
Any idea how I can listen to all unplayed episodes from oldest to newest (grouped by podcast)?

That's not exactly what we're looking for. We want the playlist (or station) to be in the "My Podcasts" order (sets the order that the podcasts play in), but play each podcast's episodes oldest to newest order.
For example you have 3 podcasts: 2 daily news podcasts and 1 weekly podcast that you don't always get around to every week, but want to listen to all of the episodes eventually. Let's also say that you weren't able to listen to yesterday's news, but want to catch up today.
Each morning, you want to listen to your podcasts in the following order:
First you want to listen to the daily news podcasts oldest to newest to catch up on the news. You want to listen to the news first, even if there are older episodes of the weekly podcast that you haven't gotten to yet. This is why the playlist (or station) needs to be in the same order as "My Podcasts"
Then, once you've listened to all of the more time-sensitive news podcasts for the day, you want to catch up on the weekly podcast, but again want to listen to it starting with the oldest episodes first to catch up.
Hopefully this helps and someone at Apple will see it.

  • In the current "Podcast" app is there a way to play ALL episodes of ALL podcasts chronologically from oldest to newest like there was in the "Unplayed Episodes" list of the original "Podcast" app?

In the original version of the Podcasts app there was an "Unplayed Episodes" list that listed ALL the episodes of ALL the podcasts I had loaded on to my device, and I could listen to them in chronological order from oldest to newest.
In the new Podcasts update I see a list called "All Unplayed" but when I select a podcast from there it plays all the episode of JUST THAT podcast, without switching between podcasts to whatever episode on my device is chronologically next.
Is there a way to listen to my podcasts chronologically across Podcast series and I'm just missing it or did Apple screw the pooch on this one?

Please, please, please... I wonder if the solution of deleting the Podcast App and using the Music App again would work.  My favorite sports radio station splits up their podcasts by DJ (logical), but I want to listen to all podcasts from one day from all DJs.  No longer automatic :(
Apple developers, if you read this please add this feature - you had it in Music App.

  • Podcasts Delete even when "keep all episodes" checked. How to stop this??

All- I have a problem with podcasts deleting after they are played. Unlike a lot of people that listen to podcasts regularly, I don't mind if they sit around a while. I want to delete them manually, when I want to.
When right clicking on the podcasts I have the "do not auto-delete" on.
In the SETTINGS page I have the EPISODES TO KEEP set to KEEP ALL EPISODES.
My problem is that when I play a podcast it deletes immediately (although it will play). Even if I am playing one and press PAUSE, it won't even continue as it has been deleted and instead goes to the most recent episode downloaded (which will then be deleted as well.)
It seems I have the two most obvious things CHECKED the correct way. What am I missing here.
    thanks,
    Coffeeicepapers

The short answer is "yes" you can stop Firefox from basing the folder on the site -- at least the last time I checked.
This requires something a little special, which is to create a new preference. Here's how:
    (1) Select and copy the following:
    browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite
    (2) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (3) Right-click any existing preference and choose New, then Boolean
    (4) In the dialog that pops up, paste the preference name you copied in step 1 and click OK. The next dialog should have false already selected (but if not, select false) then click OK.
You're done. That should do it.

  • Every previous episode on all my podcasts has now been switched to "unplayed" in 11.2, so instead of a dozen unplayed episodes, i now have 2000. WHY?

Every previous episode on all my podcasts has now been switched to "unplayed" after updating to 11.2, so instead of a dozen unplayed episodes, I now have 2000. WHY? and I can NOT select and mark them and "Played" if they aren't downloaded.

Thanks for the replies. It took a while not hearing anything so thought I was alone. I have done many of the suggestions already. The key here is that it occurs on both phones with apps, and phones still packaged in a box.
A Genius Bar supervisor also checked his Verizon data usage log and found the same 6 hour incremental use. Suprisingly, he did not express much intrigue over that. Maybe he did, but did not show it.
I think the 6 hour incremental usage is the main issue here. I spoke with Verizon (again) and they confirmed that all they do is log exactly when the phone connected to the tower and used data. The time it records is when the usage started. I also found out that the time recorded is GMT.
What is using data, unsolicited, every 6 hours?
    Why does it change?
Why does it only happen on the iPhone 5 series and not the 4?
Since no one from Apple seems to be chiming in on this, and I have not received the promised calls from Apple tech support that the Genius Bar staff said I was suppose to receive, it is starting to feel like something is being swept under the rug.
I woke up the other day with another thought ... What application would use such large amounts of data? Well ... music, video, sound and pictures of course. Well ... what would someone set automatically that is of any use to them? hmmm ... video, pictures, sound. Is the iPhone 5 succeptible to snooping? Can an app be buried in the IOS that automatically turns on video and sound recording, and send it somewhere ... every 6 hours? Chilling. I noted that the smallest data usage is during the night when nothing is going on, then it peaks during the day. The Genius Bar tech and I looked at each other when I drew this sine wave graph on the log print outs during an appointment ...

  • Continue playing unplayed episodes

I can sync a smart playlist to my iPhone with unplayed episodes. On the iPhone the upplayed episodes option is available, I can start the first podcast episode but it doesn't automatically continue to the next unplayed episode with the last iOS and Podcast app. This has worked with previous versions. I can't see any settings to fix this. Any ideas? Thanks

This is an especially important feature for me because I usually listen to all my unplayed episodes while driving, and I dislike having to interact with my phone just to keep listening, when an episode ends and I'm not done with my travels yet. I'm stuck with either being unsafe (i.e., manually starting the next episode) while driving, or I have to find a place to pull over so that I can do it safely. I used to love the old feature where Podcasts automatically just continued to the next unplayed episode.

  • Is there any way to get rid of this stupid feature in iTunes for Windows? You've subscribed to a podcast but have more than five unplayed episodes. iTunes will stop automatically downloading newer episodes.

s there any way to get rid of this stupid feature in iTunes for Windows?
You've subscribed to a podcast but have more than five unplayed episodes. iTunes will stop automatically downloading newer episodes. You may get the following message:
iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?
You can click Yes to continue downloading additional episodes. Or you can just listen to any part of any episode and a new episode will download at the next update.

I believe that feature was added in order to reduce wasted costs to the Podcaster.
Podcasts incur costs - that have to be paid for, by someone. That cost will be the cost of hosting the Podcast on a server somewhere and more crucially (with regard to your point), the cost of the Podcast being downloaded to your computer. Every download costs the Podcaster money (typically, charged by bytes downloaded).
If that Podcaster pays for the whole thing personally, obviously they want to keep down any unnecessary cost to themselves. If the Podcaster is earning money for his or her Podcast (typically from advertising within the programme) then obviously, the advertiser only wants to pay for advertisements heard by listeners. So a download, not heard by the downloader, is waste of the Podcaster's money or no payment from the advertiser.
My own experience is that I only have to resume downloading once per programme. I'm usually several episodes behind on two different Podcasts that I follow, but I do not recall having to repeat the resume Podcast after that first time.
