Keep Bootcamp partition after am OS downgrade?

After a bit of a battle I now have W7 sitting on my 10.6.2 Bootcamp partition. I now wish to 'downgrade' to 10.5.8 because it is impossible to run Palm and iSync on SL.
Will my W7 partition survive the reinstall of Leopard? Will it be accessible from Leopard and how will I ensure that it is? I would prefer to do a full install than a restore from Time Machine as the earlier install was getting a bit flakey - a bit like Windows (do others find this happens?)

I'm afraid you are concerned over nothing. Windows boots on its own as does OS X. Installing a lesser version of OS X will have no impact on your Windows installation as I said at first. The dual boot option will still be there. If you want a means of recovery just in case, then download WinClone - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - and use it to make a backup archive of your Windows partition. Since WinClone is an OS X application you can create and restore the archive directly from OS X.
Your loss of dual booting in other systems has more to do with the nature of the bootloader, how it's installed, and that Windows can blow it. That's not the case with the Mac. Boot Camp Assistant sets up an independent partition fully compatible with Windows but allowing each operating system to exist independently of the other.
There's nothing wrong with GRUB. Some Linux users rely on GRUB to provide dual boot capability between Linux and OS X. That's because the Apple hardware and software are not delivered with Linux in mind - only Windows. For two reasons: 1. A large number of potential Mac customers need or want to use Windows; 2. OS X is a variant of Unix. There's very little need for Linux on the Mac. However, as far as I know the Mac's boot loader may very well be a modified GRUB - one that works with the EFI. After all Unix and Linux aren't that different - beyond the spelling.

Hi everyone
In the process of removing a Windows partition, I accidentally quit Bootcamp (trying to quit another application). Now, the partition neither shows up in Disk Utility nor anywhere else - of course disk space still taken.
Disk repair didn't do anything... Is there any way around having to reformat the whole drive?

Well, you are evidently not seeing the same thing I do when I proceed through the Assistant (I have a Windows partition, and have described what I see as far as I can go without actually touching that partition).
Have you tried removing the partition with Disk Utility? We're not supposed to use Disk Utility's dynamic partitioning capabilities with a Bootcamp partition, but you are having trouble with the correct tool. It's worth a try.
Select your drive in Disk Utility (the drive, not a named volume), then switch to the "Partition" tab. Unlock the padlock, if necessary. In the graphical representation of partitions, select the Windows volume, then click the "-" sign below the graph to remove it. Click "Apply" to give Disk Utility the go-ahead. It will either work, or it won't.

Remove OS X but Keep Bootcamp Partition

I recently had to put Windows 7 on my 2013 Macbook Air for school. With there only being a 128gb SSD, I really don't have enough room for both operating systems. Is there a way I can delete OSX off of the computer, and merge the windows partition with the blank space left so that all I have left is Windows 7?

Hey all. I have been searching forums and racking my brain to find a way to fix an issue I am having with my Late 2011 13" MBP. SInce I wasn't able to find an answer, I figured it was time for reach out to the community.
I purchased a Late 2011 13" Core i5 MBP that had a bad HDD from a friend. I replaced the HDD with an old 100GB SATA drive I had lying around. My mistake was thinking that it was a 1TB drive. Regardless, I was able to reinstall Lion to the new HDD and get the machine up and running. Once that was working, I went ahead and upgraded to Mountain Lion with no issues, then I unstalled Boot Camp and Windows 8. Everything installed without a hitch and was working great. Right about that time I realized that I had almost no free hard drive space and discovered my error (the 100GB HDD).
I pulled the HDD and put in in my ASUS G74SX laptop along with a Seagate 750GB Hybrid Drive and used Clonezilla to do a hardware-to-hardware clone of the drive. When it was completed, I put the 750GB Hybrid drive in the MBP and it booted right up with no problems. I was also able to switch back and forth from my Boot Camp drive and everything appears to be working as it should.
The only problem I have is that both the OSX partition and the Boot Camp partition are still the same size as they were before I cloned the drive. Try as I might, I can't find any way to expand either one to use the additional 650GB of space that is sitting on the drive unused. Disk Utility won't allow me to expand the partitions unless the free space is contiguous with the drives.
Does anyone know of a utility that I can use to fix my problem? I really don't want to reload everything from scratch.

You need to combine the libraries on one computer. Otherwise you'll be constantly erasing your iTunes content as you switch computers. iPhone will only sync or manually manage iTunes content with ONE computer at a time.

i have asked this question a few times now, but i have not got the answer i was looking for:
my macbook is currently on v10.6.8 (a snow leopard version)
the factory settings of my macbook is v10.5.6 (a leopard version; i know that using the grey install disk that came with my macbook will restore my macbook back to this version)
i know that by restoring my macbook to the factory settings, some apps will go (e.g. flash player 12, app store) and other apps will be downgraded (like itunes)
but i am talking about BOOTCAMP. it isn't an app, it's a partition of my hard drive.
my question is, will i still have the BOOTCAMP partition after i restore my macbook back to its factory settings? if so, will all the folders and files in BOOTCAMP still be there?

Bootcamp disappeared after updating to Maverics

Hi Community,
I have a little Problem with my Bootcamp Partition after i updated to Maverics. To make it short: It disappeared, I am unable to boot on Windows, and the Bootcamp Partition is not visible in the Harddrive Utility.
This is how it looks like now. Usualy the Bootcamp Partition should be where you can now see the grey block. As you may notice, the harddrive utility recognises Macintosh HD and the grey block as one partition, but it also says that this partition is used for Bootcamp. Repairing the Drive does not work, because it first tells me that the Partitiontable is correct, but when I try it more often then I get this message:
Error: The Partition-Table must be repaired because of a problem in the EFI-Systempartition.
Then when i hit repair, it tells me that the Live-repair is not supportet for this filesystem. I also tried to repair it from the recovery-partition. There it takes a lot longer to get that error and it also tells me that the live repair is not supported.

The little FAT-32 drive is just there to share some data between Windows and Mac OS. This one works just fine.

Dont know what to do next, I dont really need the data on the Bootcamp partition because it all can be reinstalled and the really important data is always stored on the mac partition and backuped by Time Machine, but i would take about a day or more to reinstall all of the programs and do the Updates.
I had Windows 7 on that Bootcamp drive and a few scripts to reach several servers for my business. It was formatted in NTFS with the Windows-Installation-Disk.
I hope somebody has an idea how to proceed with that.

There has been a long dispute with google lately and that is hence why there is a new map program by apple not google, and since google really owns youtube (I think) apple has decide to part with the youtube app but there are many other suitable apps out there.

Bootcamp partition Black Screen of Death after restore from DMG file + mbr rebuild

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro 15", and my hard drive died the other day. Thankfully I had a bitwise copy (non-compressed DMG file) of my Bootcamp partition from that morning via Disk Utility, and I had all of my Mac data backed up through Time Machine.
The new disk was installed with the factory default Mac OS. I was told to try and restore the Windows partition before I restored my Mac partition. I spent all weekend and the past two days trying to restore my Windows... I took it to the Mac store and they said this was "not in their skill set to assess".
First through Bootcamp I installed Windows 7 (I still have the original install disk!), then I restarted in the Recovery partition (that comes with Mac) to load the DMG file onto the Bootcamp partition. I had to load the DMG file into the source files on the left of Disk Utility by clicking it twice, and then selected all the files as the source image in the "Restore" tab of the Bootcamp drive, and the Bootcamp partition as the destination. Everything went smoothly as far as I can tell.
Here's where things go south. I restart, after the image is loaded onto the Bootcamp partition, into Bootcamp and I receive a "Missing Operating System" error.
I then run through all of the bootrec.exe functions
bootsec.exe /nt60 all /force (which resulted in "Bootcode was successfully updated on at least one volume.")
I ran DISKPART to flag the partition as active and navigated to Partition 4 (Bootcamp) and the readback was
"Partition 4 Type : 07 Hidden : No Active : Yes Offset in Bytes : 320108232704 Volume # - Volume 1 Ltr - C Label - BOOTCAMP Fs - NTFS Type - Partition Size - 165 GB Status - Healthy"
chkdsk C: /f went well too if I remember correctly.
The only part that keeps my hopes up is that from Mac I can see all of my Windows files, it recognizes the Bootcamp partition, and everything is right in place. Any help is greatly appreciated! Also if anybody knows a better way to restore Bootcamp from a DMG please let me know! Thank you so much in advance for any feedback you may be able to provide. I can boot from my Windows installer and run any commands, and terminal is a thing

How Do I Add Partitions After Bootcamp Installation?

I want to have Windows 7 on my late 2013 Macbook Pro 13 to run applications not available on OSX. I need a small separate partition to store files for one of the applications that runs under Windows. On my older PC Windows machine I have C:\ that contains 98% of the data and a separate partition that acts as a separate drive (M:\) to store library files. This is a local copy of a server that I carry on my MBP, and doing this as I've done keeps the configuration files (that point to the server M:\) on my MBP consistent with desktop machines that actually point to a network shared drive (M:\). I just sync my small partition with the server every so often to keep my MBP functioning when I'm disconnected from the server. Now the problem. I can install Windows via bootcamp and that creates a C:\ (Windows partition) and gets Windows up and running. I have already learned the hard way about adjusting the partitions after bootcamp installation (I've rebuilt my Mac about 3 times ). I have been able to create the correct number of partitions by running the bootcamp assistant, creating the bootcamp partition, rebooting and <option> booting back to OSX, before installing Windows to add this 10GB partition (as FAT32) for my "M drive". Now after creating the "M drive" partition, I booted back into the Windows install disk (which has issues with USB drivers not functioning which I got past) and now I find out Windows will not install because it can't format the bootcamp partition since it will be a 5th primary partition and Windows 7 only supports 4 primary partitions on a drive. Is there a better way (without virtual OSs)?

Not possible. Boot Camp only works for two partitions - the OS X one and the Windows one. That's it. If you attempt to put a third partition on the drive, then Boot Camp is no longer able to manage the drive and you will lose the required boot loader for Windows. Getting things back to normal will then require repartitioning the drive back to one volume and reinstalling OS X from scratch.

Can't restore to 1 partition after bootcamp

Ok so I ran into a weird problem, and after searching for a while I can't seem to find a solution.
Can't find anyone else who has had the same problem either.
I'm currently running a 2012 RMBP. I had bootcamp installed running Windows 7.
Today I wanted to remove the Bootcamp partition to free up some space on my HD.
So I went to Bootcamp Utility and selected the option to restore Mac to 1 partition and remove bootcamp
After a while it gives me an error message, something like "cannot remove bootcamp partition or restore mac to single partition"
Ok...
But not the bootcamp partition is gone from the bootcamp utility. It's also gone from Disk utility and the Finder.
But the space that the partition was occupying (about 20+ gigs) did not change.
So it's like it's still there but I cannot erase it or get that space back for some reason.
I've tried everything. I tried rebooting using CMD+R and going to disk utilities from there also. But the bootcamp partition
doesn't show up at all. But the space it was taking is still there.
Also in Disk Utility I cannot "erase free space", it's greyed out. I can't do anything. It's like the bootcamp partition is gone, but
the space is still being taken up. So it was never really removed.
I don't know what else to do. Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone else?

I encountered the same, or very similar problem with my 2012 15" rMBP. Upon trying to uninstall Windows 7 and its associated 60GB Partition via Boot Camp Assistant (BCA), some sort of error (dialog disappeared too quickly to recall specifics) apparently prevented completetion. During my second attempt, the process appeared to stall at about 25-30% completion. After the "progress bar" hadn't moved for 10 minutes, I quit BCA.
My third attempt ended at the second BCA screen, as the initial three options (for installing Windows) were again available. I thought perhaps I had actually erased the Windows Partition, but Disk Utility still displayed an unnamed 60GB Partition. Unfortunately, resizing my boot volume to 768GB triggered a file system verification error, as did Mende1's thoughtful solution.
Finally, after highlighting my SSD (not my boot volume Partition) and selecting "Verify Disk", the "Repair disk in Recovery Mode" error suspended Verification. After rebooting in Recovery Mode (command + R after chime), repairing the drive in Disk Utility did just that, and I was able to simply resize my boot volume Partition, removing the empty partition. I guess BCA had uninstalled Windows 7, but failed to remove the partition.
Sorry for the longwinded post, but since the OP's solution didn't work for me, I thought I would share the process that worked for me.

No easy fix for a few reasons:
1) Bootcamp requires a hybrid MBR for the partition table. That is: both an MBR and a GPT partition table at the same time with the GPT one having all partitions and the MBR one having only the ones that are relevant, but at most 4 of them (including the protective partition and the Macintosh HD one). Which leads us to:
2) The MBR part of the hybrid partition table cannot work with 3TB hard drives. MBR is limited to 2TB.
I am working on a small EFI app that can boot Windows in EFI mode on a Mac and that would mean that you can go GPT only on your system. The progress of the app is slow due to the nature of EFI and for now requires that you do an unattended Windows install with slipstreamed graphics drivers, but we are adding VGA loading on top of EFI quite soon after the rest of the app stabilises. The status of the app is documented at:
Win7 x64 booting natively via EFI (no bios emulation)
Windows does actually successfully boot in EFI mode on most Macs (anything with a 64bit EFI should work), but does not have graphics support even if you load the driver due to the VGA pci registers not being set by the firmware. Furthermore, in Setup and Safe Mode, Windows uses VGA instead of GOP which is a failure by design since VGA is a BIOS standard and not really compatible without hacks with EFI. Other EFI implementations also add VGA compatibility at a high cost to the firmware complexity for the VGA cards available on the market that don't actually contain anything in their ROM except the VGA BIOS.
My recomendations:
1) Install on a second smaller hard-drive; or
2) Wait for the EFI app to come out officially and use that to boot Windows Vista SP1 x64 and Windows 7 x64 (RTM and SP1) in the native EFI mode.
3) Wait for Windows 8 which supports VGA-less booting acording to the AMD presentation at UEFI Plugfest.

Hard disk not detected after formatting bootcamp partition

I am using rEFIt (with OSX, Fedora 13, and Windows7) on my MacBook. I formatted the BootCamp partition (Windows7) using DiskUtility because I wanted to revert back to WindowsXP. After reformatting I rebooted my MacBook but I cannot get to see the rEFIt options. I used the Installation DVD that came with the MacBook, opened DiskUtility and I cannot see my hard disk on the available disks. Need help badly... Thanks!

The tests from the Assistant are not as comprehensive or reliable as the full hard drive test in the BIOS....tap F10 as you power up, go in there and find the hard drive test. Run the long form test and see what is says. It is not unusual for hard drive issues to start as intermittent and gradually get more frequent. If your drive passes the long form test you can fairly safely assume it was a one-time gremlin of some sort, but it is still a real good idea to back up. I like the idea of the online backup services and I will name Carbonite only because it is well known and not as an endorsement. There are several more and an external drive is also a good idea.
You cannot put off a reboot forever; you are going to have to confront the issue at some point.

BOOTCAMP partition not showing up on Mac OSX after resize

Hello, I have a iMac 27" late 2013 with OSX 10.9.5 and recently I resized my bootcamp partition and reformatted the OSX partition for a clean install. After the formatting, I cannot see or access the Bootcamp partition anymore. I really don't want to have Windows anymore, but I messed up thinking I would be able to recover my files. I tried following these answers but none of them worked for me. Now I can try to boot into Windows, but it gets into a disk error.

You must use the Windows formatter to format your Windows partition NTFS. Please be sure you select the Windows partition otherwise you might end up formatting your OS X partition NTFS.

Bootcamp partition missing after resizing OSX partition
