Keep files on iPod when syncing to new hard drive?

Hi - I just bought a new external hard drive onto which I moved my iTunes files, along with playlists etc. I now want to synch my iPod to the new drive, with the updated library and corresponding playlists, but would prefer not to have to erase the iPod drive clean only to re-load all 50 GB of files again, as my transfer speeds are slow.
Does anyone know of ways to get around this? My finger is paused on the "erase and sync" option hoping for a quicker fix.
Thanks

  • Transferring photos when syncing to new hard drive

I  recently had to restore my hard drive and while i have all of my contacts and i tunes backed up i have a lot of photos that had not been backed up. is there anyway to transfer them to the computer before i sync the iphone and it wipes everything?

If the photos are in the Camera Roll on the phone you can import them to the computer as follows: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
If the photos in question are ones that were moved from the computer to the phone via a previous iTunes sync there is not a standard way to do that but there may be a third party app that will.

  • HT1751 When trying to reinstall my files from itunes back up on  new hard drive It states that I do not have permissions to those files & access is denied

I backed up my itunes folder to my external hard drive.I then replaced my hard drive in my pc & installed windows 7 64 bit on the new hard drive. I reinstalled iTunes & and  logged in & all my cloud purchases apperared. All my other music on the external hard drive is my problem. When I just try to open the file it states that I don't currently have permission to access this folder. I have tried to to take possesion of it & change the permissions but it keeps saying access is denied. I tried to drag it in to iTunes but it says I do not have permission. I am pulling my hair here because I have a lot of music that I cannot get to. I am so afraid that I am going to lose it all, I need help!! Please!!!!

I found out that i can play the file with windows media but it still will not play with itunes. It has to be a itunes issue. I purchased an album off itunes & it wont even let me download either

  • Syncing to new hard drive

Hard drive on computer no longer working. When trying to sync iPhone 4 it informs me about pictures and music will be deleted. Is there anyway to get information from iPhone 4 back into iTunes?

You need to use your backup copy of your old hard drive to put everything on the new hard drive.
The music and pic sync is one way - computer to iphone. The exception is itunes purchases. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases.
If you sync contacts and calendars to a blank computer, then it will erase those as well.
This is one of the many reasons always maintaining a backup has always been very basic.
If you have failed to backup ( not good), then you can enter one unique contact and calendar entry on the computer. When you first sync, then you should get the option to merge the data.
You can e-mail the pics to yourself, but they will not be of the original quality.

  • Ipod mini and a new hard drive

My old hard drive completely died, and I've had to put a new one in to my computer. I got most of my word documents on to a ZIP disk, but one of the things I was not able to save was my MP3 files. I had a bunch of mp3 files burned from my CDs, as well as a bunch downloaded from itunes and various other sources. They are all still on my ipod mini, but nowhere else. Is there any way that I can get those mp3 files off of my ipod mini and on to my new hard drive? If not, what will happen when I try to update my ipod mini with new mp3s that are on my new hard drive?
Please advise. I am very scared that I have lost my entire music collection.

    Richard,

  • When installing a new hard drive?

I'm considering buying a SDD hard drive for my Macbook Pro. But I'm not sure what to do after inserting the drive, or before for that matter. I know how to physically put it in, but beyond that I'm not sure.
I have Mavericks, and I don't have a disc with Mavericks, but I'm told I can make a boot disc with DiskMaker X. So, that's what I'm planning to do.
I also have a lot on my drive and I don't want to lose it. If I use TimeMachine take copy of the complete hard drive, can I simply just install Mavericks from the boot disc I made and then drag the content from my TimeMachine drive to my new SDD and I have the exact same content on my new SDD which was on my old drive?
I have plugins for Elements, FCPX and Logic Pro I don't want to lose. Do I have to install all these plugins once more after installing a new hard drive.
How about Office? With the version I have, I'm only allowed to register one Office. Will my product key be removed when installing a new HDD so I'm able to register it once more?

One does not simply drag content from Time Machine to a new drive. Unlike a cloning utility, Time Machine doesn't store files exactly like they are on the desktop, partly because it tracks multiple versions of each file. While you could restore your system to the SSD from your Time Machine backup, you will need to start up off the OS X boot disc and there will be a utility command on it that will let you Restore from Time Machine. Choose that command and select the new, blank SSD as the target and select your last Time Machine backup date as the source, and run it. It will take a while (possibly a couple hours) for Time Machine to reassemble the last backup from the pile of file versions in Time Machine.
If you wanted to do a straight copy from a backup to the new blank SSD, that is why you will get advice to use a cloning utility instead. If you clone your system to another drive, not only can it be bootable from that disk, you can clone it back to any other drive (like a new one), and it works right away because it really is an exact copy of your files and folders (no waiting to reassemble the system like Time Machine).
Whether you do it with Time Machine or a cloning utility, one way you can never do this is to restore an entire system disk simply by dragging files over. There are too many hidden files, too many files with special permissions and attributes that will not be preserved if you just drag them.
Also, it may not be necessary to have an external enclosure to make a clone. You can also use a drive dock or universal drive cable. But you'll probably want an enclosure anyway, as a place to keep the old drive.

There is no clear answer on the plug-ins. It depends on the mechanism each plugin company uses to register/authorize their plugin. If a company uses hidden files buried in the system to verify a license, that hidden file might not be present in the new system. Or they might invalidate a license if new hardware is detected. You can just bring the plugins to the new system and see, and if they work the don't worry about it, but there is a possibility that at least some may need to be restored.
I have heard of stories that Microsoft Office may be a problem, but maybe they've improved it. When the current version of Office came out apparently some people had trouble getting it authorized on a new machine or disk due to the way activation limits were implemented. There is a possibility that you may have to get on the phone with Microsoft and sort it out.

  • Will Time Machine with Leopard Sync With New Hard Drive and Snow Leopard?

My computer is a 20" iMac that I bought in late 2008. The hard drive had trouble so Apple repaired with disk utility. Week later, more trouble so they did full hard drive erase. Data was backed up on Time Machine, 500GB also bought in 2008. After full hard drive erase, and reinstall of basic software, upon reboot, computer would power on then immediately off. It doesn't get past white screen. They advised a new hard drive install is needed.
A computer friend can install a hard drive just fine for me. However, I do not have the Leopard install disc. He could do it with Snow Leopard but I am scared. I'm afraid because my Time Machine last backup was with Leopard, not snow Leopard. I do not have my application discs with me, they are in storage in another state. Thus, if upon adding replacing hard drive and installing Snow Leopard my computer won't be able to sync FILES and APPLICATIONS from Time Machine because its on Leopard I will have a problem.
How can I either 1)Get a Leopard install disc and do that with the new hard drive install OR 2)make sure that a Snow Leopard install with new hard drive won't prevent my Time Machine from being able to install the saved FILES and APPLICATIONS if I don't have original APPLICATION (ie Aperture, Photoshop) with me? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
That Mac should have come with Leopard. If so, call AppleCare. They'll send you replacement discs for a nominal fee.
Once this is sorted out, make a 8-10 GB partition on an external HD or your internal HD, and use the Restore tab of Disk Utility to copy the Install disc to that partition. Then you can boot and run from it instead of the physical disc. It will boot and run much faster, too.
He could do it with Snow Leopard but I am scared.
If he does, and doesn't provide a retail Snow Leopard disc, you must buy one ($29). It's a violation of the license to share software, and you'll need a SL disc to do things like restore a Snow Leopard backup, or the Snow Leopard Apple apps, or repair the internal HD.
Your best bet is to stay with Leopard, at least until you have access to your 3rd-party software discs.
What you can do, however, is borrow his Snow Leopard Install disc (assuming it's a white Retail disc, not a gray one that came with his Mac), and use it to do a full system restore from your backups. That's not a violation of the license, since you don't install or use OSX from that disc; you just use the Installer utility on it to restore the Leopard OSX and all your data from your backups.

  • How can I tranfer songs from ipod (4GB) to my new hard drive?

My computer crashed and I lost my itunes library.  I still have the songs on my ipod.  How can I put them back on new hard drive?

    Hello Joe,
Yes you can. There are 2 different routes you can take.
    (1)  Use the manual method outlined in this article

    (2) Search for a 3rd party software to help do the job for you.  Here is a list of possibilities put together by another forum member Zevoneer.

  • How can i transfer music from my Ipod nano to my new hard drive

Hi, I have a I pod Nano 6th edition.I downloaded music from my CD collection and I purchased a few CD's from ITunes. I had problems with the hard drive and had to have a new hard drive installed. I was advised to save my ITunes library and my photos and any other important documents on my hard drive.I saved everything onto a pen drive.
I have tried to reinstall everything onto my new hard drive. I had no problem with the photos or documents, but the ITunes folders are giving me problems.
I have downloaded the updated ITunes web site onto my new hard drive.I have tried to send the folder from pen drive to the iTunes folder and My Music folder.
I also tried dragging the folder from the pen drive to the my music folder. For some reason 3 tracks from about 4 hundred have arrived in the My Music Folder.
I am afraid to plug my Ipod into the laptop as I was told I could lose every thing
Is there any way to solve my problem??
    Help
    Jill

Follow the instructions here > How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
As noted from that article, you may need to authorize the computer.
From the iTunes menu bar click Store > Authorize This Computer

  • Updates to iTunes when synced to external hard drive

I have a 60GB iPod with color screen (and can watch TV, videos, etc) and clickwheel. I have a very old computer and have to keep my music on my external hard drive. I was able to get the version of iTunes that I had, plus all my music, on the drive, and used the Preferences under edit to tell it to use the correct folder on the correct drive.
    But I have two problems:
    1. When I download updates or new versions of iTunes, they get installed in the old location. If I move that to the external hard drive, I have to manually move all my music to the new library, and my playlists are gone. How to get the updates to work right?
    2. Podcasts show up in iTunes, but when I sync, they aren't under Podcasts on the iPod--they may be in Recently added, or under the title, but not in the separate Podcasts section of iPod.

    cgb33,
You can use the Add Folder to Library option as explained in this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
Note that while this will add the songs themselves to iTunes, playlist and related information will not be included.

  • How do I retrieve the music off my iPod after installing a new hard drive on my laptop

My laptop harddrive was just replaced, and I didn't have my iTunes backed up. When I went to sync my iPod with my new iTunes, it says that my iPod is already synced to another iTunes library, so I can't sync it to mine. But that old one was on my dead hard drive. How can I retrieve my music off my iPod?

Copy the entire iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.

  • Sync to new hard drive

My hard drive crashed and now I'm back up and running again I want to sync my iphone4 to itunes again. Does anyone know if it'll do this or will I lose content?
I've had nightmares in the past with my ipod and using different computers so don't want this to happen again!

Get the current version of i tunes on your new computer/ drive.   Plug the pad in, and first, transfer purchases from the pad to the computer.  Open i photo, and move over any pictures you want in your permanant library.
    Then make a backup.
Then..... Do the ios update.  The first step of the update is erases everything.  Then it loads the new os, then reloads your old apps etc from the backup you just made.   If you lose any apps or purchased music in the process, you can redownload for free from the store.
What will be lost is any non purchased music that is in your library, and on the pad,, but was lost when the old drive died.  If that is an issue, do some googling for moving music from pad to computer without itunes.
You will need to do that before you do the  update, or that non purchased music will be erased.
At some point, you will need to authorize the new computer for your apple id.  It will ask when it wants you to.
    Good luck.  Take your time.

  • Moving iPod and Library to New Hard Drive

60GB Video iPod, purchased 11/05. Started using it at work (with permission) and spent a lot of weekend time downloading all of my cd's, as I did not have a working computer at home (it had crashed).
02/06, a friend gave me their Dell computer. I purchased Anapod software to begin "the move". Mid-transfer, found out that the computer didn't have enough disk space on the C drive! One techy tells me to get a new external drive. Another techy tells me to get an additional internal drive. I did both! I HAVE PLENTY OF MEMORY NOW!!!
I've tried unsuccessfully to move the library at work to the external drive to take it home and attach it to the home system. I get it moved. I change the settings to tell iTunes to look at that drive, BUT it's NOT WORKING!!!!!
I HAVE TO GET THIS OFF OF MY WORK COMPUTER, AS I KEEP GETTING A LOW DISK SPACE ERROR! HELP!? HELP!? HELP!?
I have seriosly had it. I'm ready to just trash everything...but I REALLY don't want to. I've bought several things from iTunes...and I don't want to transfer all my cd's again. I can't take much more of this...two months of pain and suffering is ENOUGH!

Well, I don't know about getting that external drive behaving, but I know how you can get the music off your iPod and onto your home machine. Once it's safe on the new computer, you can erase it from the work machine
1)On the work computer, connect the iPod.
    2) Go to Edit>Preferences and choose "iPod"
    3) Select "manually manage songs and playlists"
    4) Bring the iPod home
    5) on the home computer, download "Yamipod" or "PodUtil"
    6) connect your iPod
    7) run Yamipod or PodUtil to remove the songs.
I believe those programs will tell you how to get the music into your new iTunes, but if they don't, let me know and I'll get instructions to you.

  • New computer...keeping music on Ipod when downloading a new library?

I have a new computer, and have redownloaded the itunes software...so I have no music in the library, but approx 500 songs on my Ipod. How do I ensure that when I sync the Ipod with the new library, the 500 songs are not erased, but remain in addition to new songs in the library?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I suggest you get the songs on your iPod back to your computer first. That way you do not have to worry about losing the songs.
