Since installing Yosemite I keep getting a prompt to install Java even when I am not surfing the net. Went system preferences and I have recommended version installed. I want to know how to stop the prompts. I do not have this problem on my iMac.

Most likely, you have either the Facebook video calling plugin or the "NexDef" plugin for watching baseball streams. Both depend on the Java runtime distributed by Apple. If you no longer need the plugin, remove it. Otherwise, install Java.

As you can see below, when I right click, I have no such option. In the User Account Settings, I'm operating as the "System Administrator".

Sometimes I can walk away from the computer and only have one tab open (e.g. Facebook) and when I come back to the computer a few hours later, Firefox has crashed for no reason.

Unfortunately the linked crash report is empty (@ EMPTY: no crashing thread identified; corrupt dump) and doesn't include any data, so it is not possible to find the cause of the crash.
Did you recently submitted other crash reports that were submitted and show a crashing thread?

I have windows 8 and itunes 11.0.2 and the the quality of the playback of my tv shows is choppy, does anyone know how I can fix this?

I just recently got a new laptop with windows 8 and downloaded itunes 11.0.2. I downloaded my tv shows from the cloud to the laptop and the playback was awful...the audio was fine but the video is choppy and couldn't keep up with the audio. I thought maybe it was because I downloaded it from the cloud and it was a different version of itunes so I downloaded different TV shows from the store and it was the same problem. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

After contacting Apple, I received a reply from their engineers:
Copy QTMovieWin.dll from: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
to: C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes
And that did the trick.

How to stop maintenance tasks starting after mac is shut down?

Even when my iMac is shut down, it starts up in the early morning to perform maintenance tasks, then sleeps. When I have a guest staying in the room with the iMac it wakes them up so I would like to stop it (other than uplugging the power).
The startup initiation message is like the following:
22/12/2013 5:55:12.000 am bootlog[0]: BOOT_TIME 1387662912 0
Is there a way to inhibit this background maintenance operation so that it does not occur when the mac is shut down?
PS It also did this under 10.7 and 10.8 so is not actually a problem specific to Mavericks.

1. The iMac is actually shut down.
2. There is no wake or startup set in the Energy Saver Schedule.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

I linked through and submitted my info as a "topic not covered" in the iCloud section. After entering the serial number of my MBP it turns out I wasn't eligible for technical support (though I don't think this is hardware related support) and the final suggestion was to take my computer into an Apple store. I called my local Apple reseller and asked for assistance. The customer service rep was very nice but unable to help, so suggested I call Apple Support on 1300 321 456. I did so and, again, spoke to two very polite and helpful customer service people (I was transferred to security services). I didn't have to be on hold to speak to either rep for more than a few seconds! After trying a few different things, he worked out what was happening...
So, to cut a long story short, to solve the problem in my OP, all I had to do was log out of iCloud in my System Preferences and log back in using my current Apple ID. [Edited to add that I had to sign out of everything I was currently signed in to with my Apple ID before logging out and in again.]

I have a Time Capsule and it is flashing amber. The airport utility says that there are no DNS servers. How do i fix this?

I can still connect to the wifi signal with my computer but it won't stop flashing amber until i fix this issue

Have you configured the wireless on the Time Capsule? Do you have the wireless port enabled on the computer? Are you connected to the wireless network of the Time Capsule?

MadhuriBut '1D' is between '01' and '99'. Simply because '1' is between '0' and '9'.
One more example: '1111111' is also between '01' and '99'. This is how an string comparison works.
To filter out strings that do not have numeric chars in them you can use several functions. regexp_substr/regexp_replace/translate/regexp_like etc.
This might work:

Resently got white screen of death, and want to know how I can fix this

I was over at a friends house and my ipod dies from lack of batterie, and I plug my Ipod touch into his laptop with the USB cord and I walk away thinking everything is ok. I come back and unplug it, this white screen has come up and I'm unsure what to do next from this point. Get wine to load Diablo II even when NOT root

Hi guys (and maybe there are some nice girls, too )
I installed wine from the repos and my Diablo 2 + LOD Expansion and everything was fine.
But then i wanted to start the game and got an "Please insert the Expansion-Disc".
After some doublechecking of winecfg and so on I just tried to start the game as root AND it worked...
I think it might be a problem of groups/rights or might it be something else?

Now I managed it to get both games running fine.
But as soon as I was able to start, the next Problem appeared:
There is no inet-connection available in wine. My linux-connection is alright.
I have no proxy (except of tor and privoxy) and its seems to be wine not connecting correctly.
Even starting as root does NOT solve this Problem... *baaad*
To tell you the solution of my former problem:
There were some mistakes in the syntax of my /etc/group and so my user had not the required permissions (e.g. reading the cd...).
A simple correction made it work!

My notes started crashing and have been every time I open them for the past few months. They're still included in search but when I click on one, it opens for a brief second but crashes before it's opened completely. Anyone know how I can fix this?

Restarting my iPad didn't work and I can't delete the notes app, since it's one that came with the iPad (I'd lose all my notes that way, anyway). Someone mentioned once that when they synced it with their laptop their notes started working again, but I'd never backed it up to my laptop before, only iCloud.

Fixed it -- go to Settings - General - Reset and select "Reset All Settings." Still annoying, because now you have to go back and re-do all of the ways you customized your settings, but at least Notes is back.
Now if only they'd fix this major "connect to itunes to use push notifications" alert bug that's a constant irritant in some apps and disables others (Dropbox, I'm looking at you) completely.
