Keep getting texts in Japanese from international friend, please help.

Okay so I have a friend in Switzerland who sends English texts to me and somehow between him sending the and me receiving them they magically transform into Japanese characters. Neither on of us have any idea what is going on. I mean his text were coming through as English not more then two days ago and now suddenly they are Japanese. The even weirder thing is i can send him texts and they come out just like intended: English. He swears he is not joking and i believe him because he has never been much for practical jokes. Please, we are both super confused. Any help or theories you can provide would be amazingly appreciated.
Example:
Me: Hey how are you today?
Him: * insert random string of nonsensical Japanese characters here*
Me: Oh god you do know you are texting in Japanese again right?
Him: *inset more random Japanese here*
The worst part about it is i have run the characters through google translate and it comes out as complete gibberish... So it isn't like what he is trying to say is being translated into Japanese it is more like his message is being....taken over by a Japanese storm of gobblygoop.

Is he attaching a signature to his texts? Is he formatting them in a different font or colored font (some phones are capable of sending like this, but the receiving phone can't "translate" the message so it comes through as gibberish) Is he attaching emoticons or smilies?
What are the two phones involved in the texting?

I keep getting the following message after trying to install iTunes. Please help. could not access network location iTunes\.

(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

(2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:

I keep getting the song "title of any song" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it? It's on my hard drive and external hard drive, it even has the album art. What do I do? My last Ipod crashed and I had everything saved on dvds and hard drive, I know this is easy for most, but i'm new to this Ipod stuff. Please advise!!!

The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, or the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to Get Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. (Due to a bug in iTunes 12 you currently have to say No twice!) Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case. Either way with both paths I can give further advice.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

Apple TV won't load up. the light flashes and the logo appears on the TV then it just goes off and starts again. I've tried restoring via USB on 5 different computers and I keep getting error message 9? Can anyone please help?

I have a black Apple TV that has recently stopped working. It loads the Apple Logo on screen then goes off and starts again. It's as if it is stuck in a loop. I've tried a re-boot and this has failed. I have tried a restore using a USB cable on 5 different computers, including a Mac Book Pro and it downloads the update file but when it tries to restore I get the error code 9 showing on screen. I just can't get it to do anything.
Can anyone please help?

In other things, it seemed like the only time my MacBook was working was when I had Snow Leopard without the 10.6.8 update download that was supposed to be done to prepare for OS X Lion.
When I look at the information of my HD it says that I have 10.6.8 but that was the install that it claimed to have failed and caused me to restart resulting in all of the repeated problems.
Also, because my computer is currently down, and I've lost all files how would that effect the use of my iPhone? Because if it doesn't get fixed by the time OS 5 is released, how would I be able to upgrade?!

Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. I get messages that I need to upgrade Firefox but when I do I keep getting the messages, including from Firefox. The "help-troubleshooting" tab says I'm using version 8.0.1 but this isn't recognized by others.

I get messages from gmail, Pandora, and Firefox that my browser is outdated but when I upgrade to version 8.0.1 I still get the messages. No one seems to recognize the upgrade.

Can't boot from internal drive - Please help!

The internal drive on my PBG4 was making some funny noises this morning and sure enough, when I tried to reboot from it I was unable to. Instead I was brought to a screen with a DOS prompt with some cryptic error message. Since then I've called Apple support and their "solution" was to re-format the drive and reinstall the OS. I can do that if I absolutely have to, but if there's any way around it, I'd much rather avoid the reformatting/reinstalling everything nightmare scenario. Initially Disk Repair said the drive couldn't be repaired. I booted from my Disk Warrior CD (3.0.3), which prompted me to backup data (luckily I have an external 250GB drive) and I backed up my home directory. I did that and rebuilt the directory, then restarted from my Tiger CD and ran Disk utility again and it said the disk was fine. I tried to boot from the drive and I get taken to a DOS prompt again with the following error message:
launchd can't exec /bin/sh for single user: No such file or directory
Any suggestions on what I can try at this point short of reformatting the drive and starting over from scratch?

I assume you have OS X on a 2nd drive that you can run DW, Disk Utility etc.
As you backup files and know they are okay, delete them. Undo the layers of onion and try to go from latest to oldest.
If you don't have an emergency fw drive...
The trouble with long backups on a problem drive is they can fail during the backup if the drive gets too hot, which happens.
Back in Panther, you could use BootCD to create an emergency CD or DVD with your system, full finder, loads of utilities, and could even run FireFox. With that, you could run TTPro 4, Disk Warrior, DU, Rember etc. AND play around in the Finder and Terminal.
I still keep a CD and DVD with 10.3.9 just in case. The perfect FW drive would have a couple OS versions, a backup partition (that you can erase if needed).
Apple Disk Utility from CD/DVD can also be used to copy/clone a volume or foleer, using Restore and output to a volume or disk image.

Can't get sound to tv from MBP. PLEASE HELP.

I am having trouble getting sound to the tv from my MBP. I tried it on two televisions, a sharp and an LG. The only way I could get sound was through a stereo receiver on the sharp, and that took some doing.... So, I tried on the tv I mainly watch - and no sound. Is there possibly a setting within the tv, or should sound be automatic once i connect the rca into the headphone port on MBP.
The tv has the hdmi for video, and ports for audio, I plugged the white and yellow. I know it is probably something really simple - but I have tried all that I know to do. Thanks in advance....

You need an adapter. Mini DisplayPort can not output audio.

I have just completed copying a radio play from VHS to DVD-R.
(Recorded off air from high quality BBC FM onto VHS sound only in 1993)
The copy is a success inasmuch as I now have the high quality copy I desire and I can play it (via the DVD player) through the hi-fi with TV turned off.
However, I want to go further and load the DVD-R into my iMac and make an Audio only file of the soundtrack for use on my iPod for instance.
I have no idea if this is possible with the standard iDVD (or other software) on my iMac or how to even start.
I guess it would be equivalent to loading a standard DVD movie and making a file of just the soundtrack.
Has anyone any ideas please?

If you used your computer as part of the VHS to DVD process, then you'll have a digital audio file that we can find, but I'm guessing you used a VHS to DVD standalone recorder. If so, you can use some free software called MPEG Streamclip:
- insert your DVD, and Quit from the DVD Player if it starts automatically.
- start MPEG Streamclip and open the DVD; then open the Video TS folder and open the first of the .VOB files (repeat this step until you find the file you're interested in).
- use the Export to AIFF option and you'll have the audio file.
- you'll be able to bring this file into iTunes, burn it to CD, etc.

Keep Getting an Error for On-Demand. Please Help!!!

My wife and I were in the middle of watching an On-Demand movie when the screen just went blank and then it went back to the FiOS On-Demand Menu and put the error code VOD_8 : 0Xffff up on the screen. Now nothing will work in the On-Demand menu. I've been on hold with Verizon waiting for tech support for over 25 minutes. Can anyone help????

VOD_8 is an error indicating that the stb has lost connection with the network. Try rebooting the router. This will likely clear the issue.
