Itunes was working fine until i plugged in my 6th gen shuffle. itunes wouldn't read the pod and it kept showing an error message telling me i needed to uninstall and reinstall itunes. So i did. Now, itunes won't open up. i keep getting the same message, " The file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. HELP!!!
Problem solved by doing the following:
Open PC/Mac and search for iTunes Library.
From the list, select the most recent version of iTunes Library. Save this to a folder.
Delete iTunes from your computer.
Install latest version of iTunes.
When I opened the new version of iTunes, everything was there as before.
I didn't need to import the saved version of iTunes Library. Maybe this happens automatically????? -
Keep getting 'The file iTunes cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes'
unfortunately, i am having similar issues. i click the shortcut on the desktop, that message comes up. here are some solutions i have found:
1. delete and replace the shortcut.
2. open one of your particular songs and itunes will open
3. open itunes from the sidebar.
none of these have worked for me, i guess it's worth a try for you.
best of luck -
I just installed iTunes on my new laptop. When I click on the desktop icon I receive a pop up that says "The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes". I have no idea what this means or what to do about it. I can't even find a file on my computer like the one referred to in the pop up. I am currently considering keeping my old laptop if it is the only way for me to continue to access iTunes. What should I do to fix this?
What version of iTunes are you using? An .itl file is something that Windows uses, or very old versions of iTunes on Mac. The library file on Macs is now .xml and has been since late iTunes 4.
Is iTunes running ok without any problems after you OK that message? If it is, then you may be able to ignore it if you can't account for why you're getting it. But make sure you take backups in case something happens in the future. -
I am unable to open my iTunes on my Toshiba laptop. I keep getting an error message of "The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. I don't have the problem on my iPhone though.
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank youUnless you've recently attempted to downgrade iTunes this is probably a sign of a corrupt library file. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

I keep on getting the following message:
the file itunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes
This is occurring on a Toshiba laptop running Windows 7. It appears no one has ever encounted this problem using a Windows 7 system judging by the lack of threads devoted to discussing this issue. Is this the end of the road for my participation in the Apple world, or is there a possible fix for this problem?
I run iTunes on my computer, on my iPad 2, and on my iPhone 4S.
Sincerely,

Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

I receive the message: The file "iTunes library.itl"cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. I do not know exactly what this means. I have Windows 7 on my computer and was able access itunes until just recently. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes multiple times and that does not work. Sometimes I can get in when immediately after installing, but then if I close it, i cannot get back in. Now, i can't get in at all.
That message is usually a sign that you tried to roll back to an earlier build of iTunes, but occasionally I've seen it connected to a new upgrade. This technique should fix things.

I accidentally uninstalled Quicktime from my computer so my Itunes was not functioning. It told me to uninstall my Itunes, then reinstall it. Which I did.
Trouble is, now it comes up with 'THE FILE "ITUNES LIBRARY.ITL" CANNOT BE READ BECAUSE IT WAS CREATED BY A NEWER VERSION OF ITUNES'...which I believe is because before I uninstalled my original Itunes, I had not completed the recent update to the newest version of Itunes, whereas the one I just installed is the latest one.
So THEN, I download the previous version of Itunes (iTunes 10.2.1(x64)) but when I try and run it, it comes up with the message that the thing '...IS NOT VALID WIN32 APPLICATION'.
Now I'm stuck and have absolutely no idea what to do. Please help! When iTunes updates, it should create a backup of your library file before updating.
You may be able to get back by using this article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1967?viewlocale=en_US
When doing this, drag BOTH iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml to the desktop. You will need the xml file if the method above doesn't work.
In that case try this:

I cannot get i-tunes. I tried the download, but no help. I get an error message The file "iTunes library itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Any suggestions?
If you still have an issue you may have to see about using the iTunes version (application) included with Snow Leopard 10.6 from the installer or an another one if available online, and see if that will install.
Sometimes you may have uninstall the bits left in your system by the earlier (or later) iTunes installers; as they all leave a trace and these can stop a different version of iTunes from being installed.
Not sure if the following site/link will tell the method...
•Apple - Support - iTunes - install & update:
http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/install/
•Troubleshooting iTunes installation on Mac OS X:

Good luck & happy computing!
ps: i see you resolved this issue. it's magic! -
cannot open iTunes. I get the message" the file--iTunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. How do I proceed?
Had same problem and solved it without having to reinstore any music or movies:
1. Delete old Library file
2. Go to the 'Previous iTunes Libraries' folder and copy one of the earlier files - note, they have a date extension, e.g. 'iTunes Library 2011-11-01'.
3. Paste this file in your iTuners folder and rename file by removing the date extension - 'iTunes Library'
You should have all your music and paylists in tact, unless it was a really old previous file.
