Keep having to restart box

Hi there,
Ever since I received by BT Vision box, I find that I have to restart the box every couple of days or so. I used to do this by simply pulling the power cable out, but since have found all I need to do is press & hold the power button on the front.
The reason for this is the recording functionality stops working for no reason. What I mean by this:
Cannot pause/rewind live TV (when it isn't recording anything else). I usually see the red message at the top saying (rather ambiguously) 'Recording is working. Please try again later'. Erm, no it's not!
When I try to play a previous recording - the screen just freezes after trying to select a recording from the recordings list.
The only way to get it working again is to restart the box. This is a regular occurance. Anyone got any tips? Or do I need to make a call to BT, and possibly an engineer visit?
More info:
I'm using the 'Simpler Networks' white homeplugs that came with the box to connect it to the internet via ethernet.
I'm using a netgear router instead of the old old BT Home Hub I got years ago. This is located upstairs in my office. Never had any trouble with it.
I have a wireless network on the netgear which I use to connect multiple devices, such as two mobiles & a laptop.

First step is to use the Home Hub and see if that solves the problem.

  • Keep having to restart to connect to internet

    This is kind of weird...
Got my new Airport Extreme set up the other day with no problem, but now that it is up and running there are issues.
    1) Getting mail takes forever (didn't before with my old Airport Extreme)! When I click "Get Mail" the wheel just turns and turns. Eventually it will say Host connected, but it takes way too long. Most of the time it just says "Failed to connect to server" I am using Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 (I am trying to upgrade that as I write this to see if that helps). I keep having to restart in order to get my mail. I am wondering if there may be a problem with my old cable modem with the new Airport? Any ideas?
    2) After an initial surge in speed with the new Airport, it now seems slow now when surfing the internet. I also have the same problem as with email, in that I have to keep restarting. I use Mozilla Firefox 2.0. I recently ran Disk Warrior, so I don't think there is a problem on the hard drive or with files. I have full signal as the Airport is right next to my iMac G5.
    3) I am not having any issues with any other software; no crashing or weirdness there.
    TIA,
    IHeartMacs

Sounds like you might be having a DNS problem. I suggest that you give OpenDNS a try to see if it will help.
Another thing you try is to do a complete power recycle of your network components...
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the DSL/Cable modem, Internet Router, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the DSL/Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the Internet Router; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)

  • I keep getting a restart box every night to install the new Firefox. Why do I keep getting this box if it's already installed?

I've already installed the new Firefox, but every night, I keep getting a box that asks if I want to restart Firefox to install the new version. This happens all the time. Why am I getting this box if it's already installed?

Thanks for getting back to me; i was not able to get to the computer until now.
No, not thru web access; it is via the Outlook provided thru Microsoft Office.

  • I keep having to restart my computer. It say firefox is running in the background but I cannot load another page

I keep getting the message that Firefox is running in the background and I cannot load another page. I have to restart my computer to get Firefox back to operating normally. I have everything closed down as far as I can tell. But when I click on the Icon it will not start another page. It just keeps telling me to shut down all browser windows and that Firefox is running in the background. I even go to ctrl/alt/delete and look at the tasks running. Nothing! It is happening a lot more often now and I hate to use Internet Explorer. I have depended a lot more on Mozilla in the past few years now and I like it. This is driving me nuts. Please help. Thank You

Did you check the Processes tab in the Task Manager?

  • Losing connection to My Book 1 TB hard drive connected to airport.  Keep having to restart airport.  Huge inconvenience as all users get bumped off every time...need help!

I originally thought the problem was due to both windows and apple machines accessing the hard drive.  Well now I have only apple devices.  Everything is current in terms of software.  Still having the issue with My Book (Western Digital 1 TB external hard drive) being accessable and then disappearing when I step away from computer.  Restarting the hard drive does not work.  I have to restart my airport everytime!

Ok I'm just guessing at your topology here...  But... Do we have your Western Digital drive connected into the usb of an airport?
I'm stilll not fully sure on what we have here...

I would avoid Norton, eventually there always seem to be problems, and I tried NIS2008 before going to Kaspersky Suite.
Also, try cleaning up temp files and doing chkdsk.

I have also recently taken the computer to geek squad. They ran several test and supposedly there are no hardware problems.

    Hi,
    Open a Finder  window
Go to the View Menu and chose "Show Path Bar"
This will show the way to the folders and files you navigate to.
In the Finder still, use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key
    Select the Library that appears
    Navigate to the Preferences Folder.
Now Right click the Library in the Path Bar.
    Choose Get Info.
In the panel that opens up check the Ownership and Permissions section
highlight your Name and then use the cogwheel type icon.
Your shortname should appear in a sentence that reads "Make Shortname (me) the Owner" but it should be greyed out if you already Own the folder.
Your name in the list should have Read and Write Permissions.
Do you have Read and Write Permissions an Own the Library folder ?
    Repeat for the Preferences Folder.
Repeat for a file in the Preferences folder called  com.apple.ichat.plist (just highlight the file and then do CMD + i keys (Get Info))
Basically to be able to change a Preference you need permission to Write to the file involved.
However you also need Read and Write permissions to the containing folders.
If it is not sticking then it would seem you do not have those.

  • Hey guys, I'm trying to update my itunes but it keeps on saying error, and when i try go onto itunes it keeps saying connection restarted!!

update keeps saying error when i try download the new itunes and when i try and go onto my itunes it keeps saying connection restarted, check connection!! any help would be appreciated!!

    A few things to try.
    Download iTues from here http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
and save it on your PC, it's generally best to do this if you are having problems.
Try using a different browser for the download.
If you are using a wifi connection, try a wired connection if you can.
This problem has been associated with router problems also accessing the internet via a wireless dongle.
    Try restarting your router.
But in the end if none of this helps the simplest thing is to get a friend to download iTunes for you and put it on a memory stick. Preferable checking that it works first.

    Hi again CueBallMcDraw,
What operating system are you on? If your issue isn't related to your subscription being in a pending state (as I discussed in your other post), we'll look closer at what's going on with your system. But, I suspect you're going to be fine once your order finishes processing.
