Keep losing DVD-rom

Hi
I keep losing my DVD device from the device manager. I can get it back by rebooting, but then within minutes it defaults and the device manager says "windows cannot load the device driver because a previous instance of the driver is still in memory-CODE 38
If I disable/enable the DVD then the device runs okay.
Sometimes it defaults with CODE 18 or 19 as the reason. It is a new clean install of Windows 8 PRO
My machine is the T410 with Mat**bleep**a UJ8A2 SATA DVD.
I tried recently to update the firmware with the Lenovo utility but it kept returning with software is preventing the update.
In desperation I reloaded a Windows 7 image, and, the software uploaded first time and the DVD worked faultlessly,
From what I can ascertain it is probably a configuration problem within the registry but I have a PC with the selfsame programmes loaded, but a different DVD, and it works perfectly.
I am thinking of running MAX registry cleaner or ErrorEND to clean the registry but am doubtful of any success.
Can any one suggest an answer.
Regards
Frank

Forgot to say I am running Windows 8 PRO.

  • T60 no longer recognizes CD-RW / DVD ROM

so my T60 suddenly stopped recognizing the CD-RW/DVD ROM.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled and tried updating the drivers, but it keeps going into conflict in device manager.
I went into the Bios to try and test, but it isn't recognized there either.
What can be wrong with it. I have tried just about everything I know to fix it.
    please help

Restart your computer, when you see the Thinkpad splash screen press the blue button. Go into the diagnostics and test the cdrom from there. Report back with the results.

    MSI Neo 965 Mobo
Intel core duo e6400 conroe 2.13ghx
    320gb SATA hard drive
    1gb DDR2 800mhz Ram
I have installed my own radeonx1950pro 512mb card and my dvd rom(ide).
When i first turn my pc on at the diagnostic screen where it shows what is connected (ide primary/master ) it has none , i then get two options f1 to continue and del to enter setup. if i press f1 it goes to a screen where it shows my hard drive and dvd-rom , and ask me to hit a ket to continue , when i do i successfully boot into windows , when  i goto bios and into boot sequence none of my devices are there , any ideas? the only way to load to windows is if i keep hitting f1. Sorry if this sound a newbie question , but my last pc was all ide and i know nothing about SATA. also i added a memory card reader in to the floppy drive space , when i look at my drives my only hard drive has the letter H , and one of my memory card slots has the drive letter C ?????

sounds like you have a windows that was installed for previous system. You just plugged it in and hope everything work just fine. Right?
On this P965 Neo board, the PATA controller is off to JMicron external controller. So for sure, you need to install the proper driver for this controller. Check on the sticky links on top of this forum table. Get the latest driver and installation instruction there.
Also, make sure your SATA HDD is pluged to the correct port. Which port you're using?
In the BIOS, what did you set for the SATA and PATA? Everything has to be setup properly, refer to your motherboard manual on those settings.

  • I just put in a dvd rom disc and I can't get it to read or eject

Hello I just inserted a dvd rom disc into my imac and I cant get it to eject or to read

try these steps to get the disc out:
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disk Utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
Restart the computer while holding down Command-Option-O-F, to enter the Open Firmware prompt. Type "eject cd" without the quotes, and press return. The disk ought to eject. To start into OS X, type "mac-boot" without the quotes. Press return, and the computer will continue with the startup. (This will not work on an Intel Mac. There is no Open Firmware on Intel Macs. )
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.

  • How to install itunes without cd/dvd rom support?

    Hi,
Everybody knows when you install iTunes to any windows device, you will have a problem with your dvdrw afterwards. Till day, every installation i made end up with losing my dvd-rom.
There is 3 solution to this problem, but those solutions never worked for me and last time i used my company notebook without it's dvdrom for over a year.
Now, i reinstall my notebook with Windows 8.1 Update 1 and i want to install iTunes for my music but i can' let iTunes do the same thing again.
Is there anyway install iTunes without cd-dvd 3rd party/usb/firmware driver support?
I search on net and i found this link but it's way too old
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA44491?viewlocale=en_US

QuickTime is required for iTunes to run. You can think of iTunes as a media manager "front end" to QuickTime which handles the actual playing of the media.
Safari was an optional install when I installed iTunes on my Windows system. I wasn't forced to install Safari. MobileMe is also no longer automatically installed, though it will update if it finds an existing installation. I didn't get it forced on me when I installed on my Vista system.

    Hi,
For this issue,I would like to know if we can access or see the file in the DVD.
Did you receive the error message?
I suggest you check the Device Manager to see if the device is marked with a yellow exclamation point.
Meanwhile, please use the CD/DVD troubleshooter  tool ,which can automatically find and fix some problems with CD/DVD.

  • Sharing DVD-ROM with windows computers ?

altought i'm very experienced with linux, i'm rather new to mac os, so if this question sounds dumb, accept my early apologies.
thing is, some time ago, i was trying to copy some printer drivers from a CD to a windows box that didn't have a working cd-rom reader. at first i tried to share my ibook's dvd drive with the windows box, but couldn't find a way to do that from the GUI. since samba is nothing new to me, i edited samba's smb.conf file and added the share manually. after i restarted samba, the windows box could see the share, list the cd's folders but it couldn't open any file nor run executables.
all windows said was that i didn't have permission to do so.
i ended up sharing the C: drive on the windows machine and mounted it on mac os to push the files to a temp folder on the wondows side.
i found and old thread here (from 2000 IIRC) about a shareware that could share folders other than my own home folder, but i don't want to use it, i rather edit smb.conf manually. i'd like to know if there's anything alse besides adding the share in smb.conf that'll allow windows to access the files on my DVD unit.

ok here is the problem the mount points of volumes on Mac OSX differs from linux,
In linux volumes are mounted in /mnt
however on the mac the reside in /dev for example my dvd drive on my imac is
    /dev/disk1s1
but the only way to browse the volume is using is pathname /Volumes/dvdname
where dvdname is that actual name of the disk.
So I can easily setup a samba sharepoint on my using the /Volumes path e.g add the following to /etc/smb.conf
    [dvd]
comment = dvd drive on macintosh
    writable = no
    path = /Volumes/dvdname
The problem is that whenever you change your dvd roms you have to change the path to the /Volumes/ each time.
Sharepoints would be quick way of doing this.
    I have tried using path = /dev/disk1s1
but I get an error I will keep digging and if you google around as well maybe we can find a good solution.

  • CD/DVD-rom Issues; Won't Boot

Hi, I am having a problem booting when I remove my CD-Rom 'Slave' or try to replace it with a DVD-Rom.
Below I will give my computer specs.
I have  2 hard drives, so the Primary IDE slots hold my 2 hard drives; one a
Master and the second one is the slave to the master.
On the Seconday IDE slots, I also have 2 cd-roms,  one is the master and the
other is the slave to the master. The master is my cd/read/write cd-rom.  I
want to leave it and change the slave cd-rom to a DVD-rom (not a dvd r/w
    rom)...
I bought bestbuys dvd-rom, took out the 'slave' cd-rom and put the dvd-rom
in with the pin set for the slave.  I booted my computer and it wouldn't boot
pass the first booting page.  It wouldn't boot into windows.. What could be
    wrong?????????
I took the new dvd-rom back out and left the secondary slave empty and tried booting and it
wouldn' t boot with nothing in the secondary cd-rom bay ..  wierd to say the
least.. Like I said the secondary IDE slot is the Master of r/w cd-rom and I
never removed it or touched it, it is still there..
I then put my old cd-rom back in the secondary (slave) and waited a few
mintues and booted up my computer.. It booted with no problem.. I repeated
this whole sequence several times with the same results..  I for the life of
can't figure it out... My computer should boot with or without the second
    cd-rom (slave), shouldn't it?????  Adding a cd-rom or a dvd-rom should not keep my
computer from booting up should it?????
In my cmos, I have it set to boot-up with the hard drive as my first
boot-up, the second is the cd-rom.. but I don't see how removing or replacing
the 'slave' cd-rom would prevent it from booting into windows..
Yes, I have check the cables, settings and everything in my whole computer.
Can someone please tell me what is causing this.. I need a dvd-rom drive.
not paticularly the brand of the dvd-rom I just bought (which I have already
took back anyway) but I do need to get a dvd-rom asap in my computer so I am
hoping someone might know a solution to this problem..
    Thanx for any help,

With the one drive alone did you remove the jumper?
Sometimes drives are picky and fight over who is master/slave. Try switching them.

  • DVD-ROM facility

My son wants to send some unedited HD movies and photos to me so that I can properly edit them in iMovie and produce a finished DVD.
He wants to keep his Sony camera memory card and, ideally, just send a DVD with all the unedited stuff.
We are not sure of the best way to proceed.
He was thinking of importing the movies into iMovie and then exporting them to iDVD in QuickTime formats.
Whilst in IDVD he could also add photos to the DVD-ROM part of the disk but is not sure whether the unedited movies could also be located like this.
We both have iMacs and iLife 11.
Or is there a better way altogether to send this stuff.
    Suggestions welcomed.

Many thanks for clearing my muddled thinking.
    Do you mean this:
Finder>Movies>open the event containing the import from camera>choose files>drag them onto a pre-loaded DVD>burn in the Finder.
    All the best, Tom

  • K9N2 Diamond Not Recognizing SATA DVD Rom

I just though I would try to post here to see if anyone had any ideas as to what might be the cause or if I should just RMA the board and hope it gets resolved.
To sum it up I have a PC that doesn't always like to reboot (not a problem really as I don't like to reboot it except for when getting updates) and will not recognize the DVD drive plugged into the SATA ports.  Originally I thought it may have just been a flaky optical drive as it worked long enough for me to get the OS installed and everything set up back in late June early July.  However for some reason Windows XP Pro x64 and the BIOS stopped recognizing the optical drive.  Since I thought it might have just been a flaky drive I didn't worry about it too much as I had everything set up - was just annoying that I couldn't watch DVDs (but I could just go to the other room to do that so not biggie).  On Saturday I bought a new DVD drive (one that could play Blue Ray disks figuring since I have my monitor hooked up through an HDMI cable why not also have the capability to play Blue Ray disks) and the same problem exists.  The BIOS will on a rare occasion actually recognize the DVD drive however as soon as it reboots again it will not and even when it did recognize the DVD drive by the time Windows loaded up it didn't pick up on it.
I have tried all four SATA ports in combination with my SATA hard drive (and alternating between six different SATA cables too) but a vast majority of the time if I have both the hard drive and DVD drive plugged in the PC will not boot up - it just seems to hang (and sometimes doesn't want to let me into the BIOS).

The original DVD drive (an OEM Sony Optiarc Beige 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA DVD/CD Rewritable Drive - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118033) was what was being used while I was installing everything and was the drive that I was noticing wasn't always showing up in Windows Explorer (well more often than not wasn't appearing, but it seemed to last long enough to get all the initial installations done and I really don't used the ROMs much past that).  At the time I thought it might have been that the drive just went flaky and ignored it because I didn't use it.
The odd thing was it was also causing headaches when restarts were required for the same reason - the PC would freeze up on the motherboard splash screen (lack of a better term presently) where it normally does the POST tests (I think I am remembering that correctly .... when all the beeps takes place) so I unhooked the SATA connection to the motherboard for the drive and then the PC would actually reboot normally without the hanging.  This made me also think it was the drive causing problems.
I've been running without any optical drive hooked up for a couple months now, but with getting my copy of Windows 7 I was getting ready to install that and picked up what I thought was the needed fix in a new DVD drive however when hooking it up the same problem started up again.  This time when trying to figure out a setting that actually worked I rotated through all six of my SATA cables (motherboard came with extras ) and rotated them through all four normal SATA slots.  Well actually I tied all six slots but it didn't seem like the BIOS wanted to pick up on slots five or six (the E-SATA if I recall correctly) as having devices (when I had the HDD and DVD Drive in slots five and six it said it couldn't find a bootable device).
I'm at work now so I can't double check in the BIOS but I am pretty sure it is just set for SATA since I don't use RAID or AHCI - I'll check again on this when I get home though.
The oddest thing about the whole thing (to me at least) is the lack of consistency with the BIOS recognizing the devices (well the DVD drive anyways).  I would have thought that if it recognized the device (which it has from time to time) that it would keep on recognizing it, but it seems to want to forget that it did recognize it even after it did by the time Windows loads up.
It does not seem to have any problems when only the SATA HDD is hooked up though.
If it really is the MB being flaky I think I would only have four options:
    1)  Buy a SATA PCI controller card and see if I can get things up and running that way - though this wouldn't solve the problem if the motherboard is flaking out and not 100% sure what it would do for installing new OS quite yet .... not to mention be a little odd when there are 5 other open SATA ports on the motherboard)
    2)  RMA the motherboard and hope a replacement/fix can be made and be without a PC for the duration
    3)  Not upgrade to Windows 7 and sit on that upgrade till whenever and also have a new expensive paperweight (if I take the ROM out of the PC)
    4)  Get a new MB .... really don't want to pick this one since I built the thing tail end of June/beginning of July (just was slowly ordering the parts for longer than that .... I really need to stop doing that - kills possible return chances)
Of course I can also hope it is something else that I am just missing and that none of those are needed.  I actually built my setup based on what a friend of mine has since his is/was pretty solid.

  • I have a late 2012 iMac running osx 10.8.5.  I keep losing access to my internal hard drive.  I can reboot and regain access and it will last for a few minutes or hours.  Disk utility does not seems to help.

I have a late 2012 iMac with an I5 precessor running OSX 10.8.5 and a 1tb internal hard drive.  I keep losing access to the internal hard drive/startup disk.
I can reboot and everything operates as normal for a few minutes or hours but then I lose all access again to anything on the hard drive.  The computer is still up and running but no files can be accessed and certain websites cannot be acessed even though internet access appears to be normal.  Disk utility can only find permission errors related to iTunes which can be repaired only to come back at the next scan (I would not think permission errors would have anything to do with the hard drive crashing).  It does not seem to matter what program I am using at the time access is lost and it can lose access sometimes right after reboot when no program is running.

You will need to boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during restart and select it) to run Disk Utility/Disk Repair.

  • Mounting a Solaris x86 CD/DVD from a remote Windows CD/DVD-ROM drive

    Greetings, all.
Is it possible to mount a remote Windows CD/DVD-ROM drive? I have the Solaris 10x86 Companion Software DVD sitting in a CD/DVD-ROM drive that's installed on a Windows server on my network. It is shared-out (F:) and the two servers can ping each other. I've also confirmed the NFS services/daemons are running on the Solaris x86 machine. I've tried the following variations but, all have failed to produce successful results:

I've also tried mounting it at bootup by adding the appropriate entry in the /etc/vfstab file but, this does not work as well. I've tried Google'ing for an answer to my issue but, I haven't been able to find anything that applies directly to what I'm reporting. It's usually chatter about mounting from one UNIX server to another. Any advice from the community would be greatly appreciated.

After three weeks, you deserve a reply. Windoze does
not natively support NFS.Also deserves a decent answer...
There are two ways to do this:
Install Microsoft's free "Windows Services for UNIX," which includes a Windows NFS server; or
Install the 'sharity' package (google for it); it provides Solaris systems the ability to mount Windows shares

How do I fix these problems because updating the drivers will not fix it and make it go away.
if you can help, that would be great.

  • Problem with ARD3 keeps losing the cursor

I am having problems with ARD3 whereby I keep losing the cursor when controlling another machine. The cursor is still there but you have to click-drag to see it moving. There was a similar problem a few months ago after a system update and pre ARD 3.1. I used to be able to upload the ARD client and that would solve the problem temporarily. But now that won't even work.
Another thing I notice when that happens is that my "Hidden Dock" stops appearing unless I click in the area. That also happens with my menus. And Expose stops working too.
The only way to get around the problem, is to either restart the computer or leave it for anything up to 1 hr, then it will be fine again.
Does anyone have the same problem?
I use a MacBook Pro DC 2G with 2G of RAM. 10.4.9 and all the latest System Updates including Security Update 2007-04. This started happening even before the 2007-004 security update.
MacBook Pro DualCore 2G   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I find that this happens only if a tool tip comes up after having it over an item in the toolbar however clicking in the remote computer's windows somewhere will bring the cursor back. Additionally switching windows, to say the main ARD window, and then back again will restore it as well.
