Keep my LAPTOP Mounted in Finder

I am having this annoying problem.
I am frequently in a position of either moving data from my laptop to my desktop or desktop to laptop, or I am in the position of opening files on my desktop that are on my laptop or in the position of saving files to my laptop from the desktop.
Basically I have a ton of real estate on the desktop screen, a nice comfy keyboard and oftentimes important data on the desktop. At the same time I keep a lot of the current data that I am working on on the laptop because this is what I take with me.
So. I will be on the desktop and I will want to move files to the laptop or I will be in some software on the desktop and I will want to save a file directly to the laptop.
Is there a way in one or both of these scenarios to keep a connection open to the laptop? Every time I open a Finder window I have to hit Connect and go through the login procedure. Why can't Finder remember that I have already established this connection and why does it require a new login every Finder window? Is there a setting for this somewhere? Should I be docking the open window in the top right hand corner somehow so I can get to it and I don't have to roll through my 20 open windows to find the last time I opened a Finder window that is going to the laptop. Are there permission settings that I need to change every time I sit down to the desktop which I then have to change back when I go to the coffee shop with my Laptop? What gives?
Can someone please explain this to me so I can get it to work a little better?
I'm new to Mac and the last time I had a desktop and laptop was ages ago, so apologies in advance if I am missing something.

Do you mind if I ask how I make sure the keychain is unlocked?
What I do is open Keychain Access, open Preferences, and check "Show Status in Menu Bar." This puts a padlock icon in the menu bar, which lets you do several things. You can see immediately whether the icon is "locked" or "unlocked," and when you click on the icon you get a menu where you can control your keychains, and a handy "Lock Screen" command that I use all the time when I have to step away from my laptop.
Although for the problem we're talking about, you shouldn't have to know. If I double-click an alias and the keychain is locked, I get the login dialog and I just type in my account name and password. If it's unlocked, I just pass on through. I don't actually have to check on the keychain status or handle it manually.
One thing that will affect this though, is how long you have set your keychain to auto-lock. In the Keychain Access app again, if you select the keychain and choose Edit/Change Settings for Keychain..., you get an option "Lock after _ minutes of inactivity." If you feel you are being asked to unlock the keychain way too often, you might want to make the keychain take longer before it auto-locks.
I tend to keep a long lockout time on my desktop and a shorter time on my laptop because I use much higher security levels on the laptop, since it leaves my home and is much more likely to be stolen.

  • Verbatim disk drive historically used only for time machine backups. Recently i added some other media files to use some of available space without partitioning, the disc now refuses to mount in finder despite appearing in disk utility. Repair fails. HELP

Sorry to elaborate a bit more.
I have used time machine since owning my mac book pro with no issues. i keep the timemachine backups on an external hard drive made by Verbatim. This has not external power source.
Recently i decided to use up some of the available space on the external verbatim disk drive to store some movie files which were sitting on my macbook pro.
Therefore i created a new folder outside of the time machine backup folder and stored the movie files in there.
From then on Time machine failed... and a few days later i noticed it was not mounting in 'finder'
Therefore i used disk utility to see if it was recognising it. Which i was. However when i try to repair it the repair process fails.
In disk utility i am presented with 1 TB Samsung HN M10 which has a child called Verbatim HD.
The 1TB Samsung hardware appears fine, but the verbatim disk i am unable to fully verify and fix.
Does this mean i have lost all my back ups?
Have I lost all the media that i put on there?
Is there any way to fix this?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    didier07...

To summarize: You used an external Verbatim HD for your TM backups. Then, you stored some movie files on the "spare" space on the Verbatim drive. Now, Disk Utility isn't being recognized, and repair is disabled. Your home Samsung drive is working fine, but the Verbatim cannot be verified.
The problem, I believe, is that the external Verbatim drive wasn't partitioned. There should be two partitions: one for TM backups, the other for video. That way, you can perform backups, and still retain some space for video or somesuch.
Frankly, I don't know how to fix this except through the following. (1) Erase the Verbatim drive, (2) Create a new blank space and format it, (3) Make two partitions - one for backup, the other for video. (4) Run TM through one partition, but switch to the other for your videos.  The better solution might be to have one dedicated drive (perhaps the Verbatim) for backups, and another dedicated drive for video backups; that way, you'll have plenty of space for expansion.
I hope someone will correct me if I'm incorrect, but I believe you've essentially lost your backups and media. I don't know how you can retrieve that clump of the now-undifferentiated data on the Verbatim drive. To retrieve any lost data, you're going to require another external drive that's larger in capacity, as well as data recovery software; don't expect encouraging results. If you're desperate, there are firms like Drive Savers that can offer a more comprehensive solution - at a cost.

  • External computer keeps trying to mount

I used to have my old computer mount when I started up a my new mac. I no longer have that mac. But when I restart the new mac, the old one keeps trying ot mount and I get an error that it is not there. I cant find out where to take it out. I deleted all servers that were on the list including the old computer, but it keeps trying to mount when I reboot.  Any Ideas to find where the setting is to turn off the looking for old mac?

Might be a login item in your account.
System Prefences > Accounts > Login Items tab. If there's a reference to it there, select it and click the minus sign below the list to remove it.

  • External RAID0 won't mount in Finder or Disk Utility

    Hi everyone,
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
I have a Western Digital Passport RAID0 that I connect to my 2008 Mac Pro via Firewire 800. It has worked for years. I switched out one of the drives about a year ago after it went bad, but when I did that, Disk Utility was still able to see the two separate drives when plugging it in the first time after switching them out.
This time, when the RAID0 wouldn't mount in Finder, I opened up Disk Utility and neither drive showed up. So I opened up the enclosure and tested both drives in a USB dock. One mounted fine, the other said it was unreadable. So I set the unreadable one aside and switched it out with a same-size replacement drive that I had partitioned as MacOS Extended Journaled (non-case sensitive) with GUID partition table (same as the other drive and all drives on my system).
Reassembled the enclosure and plugged it back in. Still, neither drive is recognizable by Finder or Disk Utility. Verified it has power and that the cables are seated correctly. I also tried USB connection just to be safe.
I do not believe the RAID controller in the enclosure is bad—at least it seems very illogical that a drive and the controller would fail at the same time, as I have it well protected against power surges.
Any thoughts as to something I may be missing or known issues? I upgraded to Yosemite at its public release but successfully used the drive between then and now.
    Thanks again!

I havev installed a new Hard Drive on my laptop but cannot find my Photoshop Elements product box with the serial number to install Elements 10 or Elememts Premier 10. How can I find out the serial / installation codes for these? I saw a reply however, it was not my name and assumed it was for someone else. Now timed out. Can UI still have help on this matter please?

If you registered PSE before, go to the main page of adobe.com, sign in and go to your account and you should find the serial number there in your purchases.

You can't. If its offline it can't be tracked. The device needs to be powered on and connected to an Internet connection to be trackable.

  • Accessing NFS mounts in Finder

I currently have trouble accessing NFS mounts with finder. The mount is O.K. I can access the directories on the NFS server in Terminal. However, in Finder when I click on the mount, instead of seeing the contents of the NFS mount I only see the "Alias" icon. Logs show nothing.
I am not sure when it worked the last time. It could well be that the problem only started after one of the lastest snow leopard updates. I know it worked when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
    Any ideas?

    Hello gvde,
Two weeks ago I bought a NAS device that touted NFS as one of the features. As I am a fan of Unix boxes I chose an NAS that would support that protocol. I was disappointed to find out that my Macbook would not connect to it. As mentioned in previous posts (by others) on this forum, I could see my NFS share via the command line, but not when using Finder. I was getting pretty upset and racking my brain trying to figure it out. I called the NAS manufacturer which was no help. I used a Ubuntu LiveCD (which connected fine). I was about ready to give up. Then, in another forum someone had mentioned the NFS manager App.
After I installed the app and attempted to configure my NFS shares, the app stated something along the lines of (paraphrasing) "default permissions were incorrect". It then asked me if I would authenticate to have the NFS manager fix the problem. I was at my wits end so I thought why not. Long story short, this app saved me! My shares survive a reboot, Finder is quick and snappy with displaying the network shares, and all is right with the world. Maybe in 10.6.3 Apple will have fixed the default permissions issue. Try the app. It's donationware. I hope this post helps someone else.

I need to transfer standard 9 from an exsisting laptop to a new laptop but cant find the DVD. How can I do this?

First download AA 9 (http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html) and save it to a backup drive (HD and/or CD). Get your S/N (you may have to go to https://www.adobe.com/account/my-products-services.html to look it up, assuming you registered).

  • DCR-DVD508 mounts in Finder as blank DVD

I am trying to transfer video from a Sony DCR-DVD508 to my iMac using iMovie '09. I connect the two devices using a USB cable. The camcorder stores the video on an 8 cm DVD. When I connect the camcorder to the iMac, the camcorder mounts in Finder as a blank DVD, but I know there is video recorded on the camcorder's DVD because I can view it in playback mode on the camcorder.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    David

Finalizing did the trick. My friend must have neglected to do so before giving me the camcorder. Now I'm going to lambast him for making me waste an afternoon trying to figure out how to upload his video.
    Many thanks.

  • I am trying to down load I tunes on my computer and it keeps telling me it cant find the apple aplication suport

I cant get I tunes to down load on to my computer it keeps telling me it cant find the APPLE APPLICACATION SUPORT?????

With the Error 2, let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR suitable for your PC (there's a 32-bit Windows version and a 64-bit Windows version). If the following link takes you to the WinRAR home page rather than the WinRAR downloads page, click the Downloads header in the box at the left of the WinRAR home page to see the trial version downloads:
    http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, see if iTunes will launch without the error now.
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

It is probably the app itself that is giving you the update notice.  You must have installed it at some point in the past, maybe accidentally.  I had the same thing happen a while back. Unfortunately I don't recall what I did to get rid it.

Perhaps, iTunes can't communicate with the Apple uodate servers. Temporarily disabling your firewall and antivirus software would help. Take a look at this.
