Keep original audio but add in alternate clips in iMovie '11
I shot a video and wish to keep the original soundtrack while adding a couple of clips in the middle. I know I'll need to clip out some of the original video so that I retain the original length of the video to match the length of audio, but how do I do that? I've read about splitting video but not audio. Can I copy the original audio track and add it as an additional track and then edit the video portion?
Use the Cutaway feature for this.
First, go into iMovie/Preferences and make sure the advanced tools are enabled.
Drag the second clip from the event and drop it on the clip in the project at the video frame where you want it to start. When the pop-up menu appears, choose Cutaway.

I deleted the video track so now I basically have a blank space to fill in. Do I just need to find another part of my shot that is the same duration & drop it in, or is there a better approach?That will do the trick.
Switch Linking off and adjust the Track Destinations accordingly if you have trouble dropping in only the video.
FCE is non-destructive so your origianl captue stays in tact.

Audio: voiceover volume very low; & can't permanently delete original audio
I'm finishing off a project started by a colleague. In a number of clips, the speed of the footage has been reduced to 25%. The original audio is still embedded in those clips, but is not used and has been muted. I want to record a voiceover, and am using a USB microphone on my iMac. The recording levels work fine when I test them in GarageBand, but when I record the voiceover in iMovie, it's extremely quiet. I've tried increasing the volume to 200%; I've tried turning ducking on and off; and I've even recorded the voiceover in GarageBand, exported it to iTunes, where it sounds fine. But the minute I import it into my project, the volume goes right down.
I've tried detaching and deleting the original audio track from the relevant clips, in case this is causing problems (because the speed of the audio track is also reduced to 25%). But even if I empty my trash, when I go back to the clips, I can still detach the audio, so it hasn't really been deleted.
So. Can anybody suggest a solution to the low volume, and whether this might have anything to do with the speed reduction on the originally embedded audio?I booted into Windows XP on Bootcamp, and it seems to have the same problem. I also tried the backup of my Tiger system on my external hard drive, and again, the same problem. I tried resetting PMU, but it's still the same. Again, for some reason, my internal speakers are working fine, but when I plug in headphones, the volume is really low even when I turn the volume all the way up. I tried this on iTunes, youtube, and the click sound when you turn up the volume from the keyboard. I can't hear any of them unless I have the volume turned all the way up, and even then, I can barely hear the sound.

Can not import video clips into iMovie from Photos
I have some clips that I copied from my GoPro to my iPad via the Apple Camera Connection Kit. When I open iMovie there are icons for the clips but iMovie will not import them. The format is H.264. Is there a way of tricking iMovie?
Here is the problem, Im making a movie, I took all the video on my Kodak V610 Camera. I have the clips in .mov format. The clips are stored on an external disk in my iPhoto library.
Your digital camera probably uses MPEG-4 video (compatible with iMovie '08 in combination with µ-Law 2:1 compressed audio (which is not iMovie '08 compatible). While using the MPEG Streamclip MPEG-4 conversion will work, the prefered methof would be to use the QT "Movie to MPEG-4" option in QT Pro (quicker if you have it) or GarageBand (via the "Expert Settings option) to "pass through" you video while converting the audio to AAC (MPEG-4 audio). A mono setting of 64 Kbps with a 44.1 KHz sampling rate is a bit of "overkill" with respect to the original audio but will be quality compatible with what iMovie uses for its output presets. -

How can I keep my audio track, delete a short segment of video, and reinsert a new video clip, without changing the audio with the way it lines up with the original video?
If you have either iMovie 09 or iMovie 11 you can do this easily using the Cutaway feature.
Go to iMovie/Preferences and make sure that the Advanced Tools are enabled.
Now you jut drag and drop the 2nd clip onto hte first clip at the frame where you want the Cutaway to start. A popup menu will appear. Choose Cutaway.

If you have iMovie 08, let me know. There is a way to do it, but it is more complex. -
Hi, Excuse my English, I'm using imovie 11, I want to delete a clip video at the end of the project, but keep the audio over the fade to black, everytime I delete the video, the audio is also deleted, please help!
I assume you are trying to end the clip/project with a fade to black, or something that just doesn't cut so instant.
One thing i'm thinking you can try is to Add a "Transition Clip" to the end, and try your first method. (with Detached Audio + Delete Selection. (Yellow highlight was deleted selection) Do you need something to end like this?
If you can, put screenshot up (Shift+Comm+4), if i'm not on the right idea. It seems like an easy fix, with a few ways of doing it. You can also add a blank image to end project, sub titles or Add,Cutaway fade +Opacity adjust. -

I have many very short audio clips that I recorded into my project.
I want to adjust the project tempo so that I can use the snap grid to make a beat out of my short audio clips. But when I change the project tempo, it automatically adjusts the lengths of my audio clips.
So how can I change the tempo (and the snap grid) of the project without altering the original audio clips?The reason some files sound funny and others don't is because audio is handled a few different in Garageband depending on it's source (audio your recorded vs Apple Loops vs non Apple Loop pre recorded audio). Each of these have different color regions with different properties. I just found this thread that might better explain it:

My first two thoughts
• Shared to Media Browser - BUT as Large or HD - try Medium !
• audio from iTunes - use to go silent
- in iTunes
- Create a new PlayList with needed audio
- BURN this as a standard Audio-CD (.aiff) - NOT .mp3
- use the files on this CD in Your Movie project - I ALWAYS DO - and only use .aiff ever - never .mp3'
My notes on this:
No audio on DVD disc.
Most common origin.
1. Imported audio from iTunes.
• In iTunes copy out as an Audio-CD .aiff (Same as played on standard Stereo CD - no .mp3)
• Use this in Your movie project
2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
(iM’08 & 09)
3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provoking it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.

4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
• Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)

Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies — except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format — that I have noticed.
7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
Before burning the DVD.
• Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
• Double click on the .img file
• Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
• In iDVD 08 - or - 09
• Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
• OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

Keeping the audio flow, but changing video scenes
Okay, so I did an interview of sorts. A friend sitting by a window. As he speaks, I want to fade out of one scene and into another, then another, and so on. the back to him.. then fad out into another scenes. but keep the audio in sink so when I go back to him... for some reason I cant seem to insert a new scene without disrupting the audio. Thanks.
Yes, what I gave you will work. Let me describe what these steps do in another way and see if you agree. The scenario, you have 20 minutes in one long clip of a person reading news just like watching TV. Five minutes in they read a story about Cuba, while the long clip continues, temporarily the view of the person reading is replaced by a map image though you still hear audio and when the map "cutaway" is over the 20 min. clip is just continuing unabated. There's no limit (I know of) to adding cutaways throughout the 20 minute video.
Note that you do have to have Advanced Options enabled to do this, Preferences>General: Show Advanced Tools -

You can easily overlay a photo in iMovie '08 -- you just can't combine it with a Ken Burns Effect.

Only way to do this is to turn off the video clip audio and split the video clip removing a fixed number of frames. You then add a still image sequence with the same number of frames and apply your KBE as desired. Last step is to "extract" (Command-Shift-Drag) the original audio from the original Event clip and pin it to the beginning of your project video clip. As long as the split video + still sequence have the same number of frames as your extracted audio clip, all should be well. -
My hard drive fried and had to be replaced. I'm trying to install CS4 from my original discs but keep getting this error message - "One or more of the required components of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Standard failed to install correctly". A customer service rep gave me a link to download off the Adobe site, but when I try to open the file to run it, I get this error message - "A problem occurred extracting the archive".
Can anyone help?Yep. Nothing happens at all. Windows tries to execute the uninstaller, but I don't get any other screen and all activity stops for the MSI. I monitored it in Process Monitor and the MSI executable appears, but is quickly ended, like it couldn't find anything or something.
It's as if windows has a blank entry in Programs and Features, because it used to show the size of the Adobe application in the "Size" column. Now it's just blank. Link to screenshot below:

Note the install date. That's when I was able to successfully reinstall it. Now I can't even do that. I should also mention I tried Revo Uninstaller. It deleted one small registry key, but nothing changed.
By the way, is the CS cleaner supposed to ask for a disc in the drive when you run it? It refused to run unless I had one in it, so I used my install dvd. -
I have a Canon 550D and a class 6 Sandisk extreme 3 card which I have been taking great photos and film clips.
Yesterday I captured some content and when I put it into my macbook pro, the images were clear as per usual however the videos only appeared to play the audio in aperture 3 and also in quicktime.
I then tried the videos in VLC and it had perfect audio once again but with picture this time. This picture quality seemed to freeze.be jittery.
Has anyone had/fixed this before..?? The content I have captured was of a once off opportunity for work...hi,

I am trying to change the date on an imported home video clip. I entered 9/7/2012 and got 6/9/0339! I checked modify original file, but it is not working. Any ideas?
Are you using the Adjust Date and Time option or the Batch Change option? If it's the former try the latter. If you get the same results launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import the same video file and check to see if the same problem persists.

I created in iMovie, and extracted audio from one of the clips to use in the title sequence. All is well, export to iDVD and it plays OK, but when I burn the DVD the audio for the titles does not play. Any suggestions?
I am on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.7 running iMovie '11 and iDVD 7.1.1. Thanks for any input.
