Keep sound on login window

When i call upp the Login Window using the icon in the top right of the screen as a crude way of locking the computer, the web radio mutes.
Is there any way to let sound play while the computer is "locked"?
I've got a Terminal. And I'm not afraid to use it.

Hello there, Kenny!
Go to System Preferences, Accounts pane.
Highlight your user account in the Sidebar.
Click on the padlock icon and type in your password when requested.
Click on "Login Options" (at the bottom of the Sidebar).
Clear the "Use VoiceOver at login window" checkbox.
Click on the padlock icon again, to prevent further changes.

  • Finder keeps crashing on login window

    Hi,
I have a 27" 2011 iMac 2.7GHz i5. Running Mavericks 10.9.5. Ever since we had a power outage 3 months ago, my computer has acted awful. Shutting down randomly or when using heavy memory intense programs like photoshop. Ran disk utilities several times to fix issues that would not repair the first few attempts.
I setup Time Machine on an external and that took about a week before I could finally get a complete back up without it restarting during the process.
The problem today is the finder keeps crashing at the login window. So it takes me 10+ tries just clicking on a user to get into a user account. You click on a user icon, then the screen goes white and comes back to login. Sometimes it spins and comes back, sometimes it shows spinning beach ball.
I took the computer to Apple store and they told me I had bad 3rd party ram. The ram has been in it since 2012 with no problems. So, I put new ram in it and it still does the same thing. Oh, and it went blank while I was typing this and back to the login screen. Luckily this site autosaves your post.
I also saw posts to delete finder prefs. That file does not exist in my preferences folder...com.apple.finder.plist, nothing with the word finder shows up in the prefs folder.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • (it's an answer to..) "My mac keeps returning to login window"

As above my imac mini kept going into a deep sleep when left unnatended for an hour. I had just upgraded to Mountain Lion AND was using new 'Canopus' hardware to convert my old video tapes AND had read "incompatible software" messages so i suspected this was where the root of the problem lay.
Various threads were siezed upon to remedy this, the latest was a 'safe reboot' and remove problem startup apps. There were no problem flags (circle with a line struck through) but I deleted all the startup apps anyway.
Still thee problem was there then I read a simple fix on a seperate thread...
I had obviously checked the energy saving shut-down sttings and still had the problem however this thread pointed to a timeout setting within SYS PREFERENCES/SECURITY & PRIVICY/GENERAL/ADVANCED which was greyed out until I entered the password.
There it was, completely buried and anything but obvious. "Logout after sixty minutes inactivity" BINGO!
This might be obvious to a million and one experts but I've been trying to sort this for over a week and now have to start transferring my videos all over agai so I hope it helps another simpleton like me

Firefox would store its data in the profile folder. You need to search for the old profile folder, inside it there will be a folder called bookmarkbakups containing a few files with names in the format bookmarks-yyyy-mm-dd.json.
For details of how to find the old profile folder see the [[profiles]] article. It should be inside this folder - /Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/, there will likely be a folder with a name similar to xxxxxxxx.default, that will be the profile folder.
You can import the bookmarks from the most recent of those files into your current version of Firefox by following the restore procedure in the [[Backing up and restoring bookmarks]], using the "Choose File" option.

  • Itunes login window keeps popping up for no apparent reason

For about 2 weeks now the itunes login window asking for my itunes password keeps popping up for no apparent reason at annoyingly frequent intervals on my touch 3.1.2. This seems to occur regardless of what i am doing on the ipod or which app I am using at the time. If i enter my password and press ok the message still pops up again later. Anybody have a solution?

    Hi,
Please go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features to repair the Installation of Office, check if the issue persists.
If the issue still exists, I suggest you perform a clean boot to determine whether background programs are interfering with Communicator:

  • Just upgraded to 9.4, safari will not let me keep more than 3 windows open, if i try to open 4th, one goes away

Safari will not let me keep more than 3 windows open, when I try to open 4th, one goes away, just installed 9.4 last week, nothing but problems

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • My MacBook Pro Retina's Bluetooth chipset unknown/odd login message on the login screen states Login Window Authentication Login window Name edit text has keyboard focus. In addition, the login screen is not remembering me

I have been experiencing several issues with my MacBook Pro Retina mid 2012. My MBPR is scheduled to go into the depot. However, I am wondering if anyone may be able to shed light on a few issues as this is the third "official" time my MBPR is going back for service ("one depot" trip; "one authorized" dealer; several in-store visits).
My Bluetooth is stating that the Bluetooth Chipset is Unknown (0). I also have had Bluetooth Preferences mysteriously change on me. In addition, while Bluetooth is off there are two serial modems turning on. I have turned them off, but they continue to pop up.
In addition, when I log in, my MBPR is not remembering me and my login name is not appearing on the slate-gray screen. The name and password are blank and the following message appears in the lower left hand corner. "login window authentication login window Name edit text has keyboard focus."  As a side note, I am the only user. The login issue is a recent occurrence as we just totally wiped it again via a Command + R, and I don't believe I have an accessibility setting set to anything that would cause this, but wanted to check.
Should I be concerned here? Has anyone else had issues like this? I don't want to worry if I don't have to. I have had so many issues over the course of nine months. 5-6 wipes. Airport card replaced and I am about to pull my hair out if my MBPR doesn't come back worldly like clock work this time. I just can't send my days trying to get a $2300 product to work for me any longer. No idea what is wrong with it, but it is driving me insane. Cross your fingers for me and any guidance you have or thoughts would be welcomed. Thank you. EMM

    A few more issues...

I am worried about a keystroke logged or at least, trying to rule it out.

    WARNINGS in Console include:
[NSImage compositeToPoint:fromRect:operation:fraction:] is deprecated in MacOSX 19.8 and later. Please use -[NSImage drawAtPoint:fromRect:operation:fraction] instead.
There are a ton of other warnings. Before I go through this again, can someone tell me if this is normal (all of it -- above too); or if these are symptoms is a keystroke logger or hardware issues?
I ask because originally, when my computer went in for diagnostics (more than once), Apple stated the hardware was fine (other than Airport Card -- finally). However, if I've done 5-6 total wipes; created new users; do not have sharing set-up; have not played around in Terminal; and am up-to-date with versions -- and various issues KEEP COMING BACK -- I am left wondering if a keystroke logger would be possible here?!? I thought maybe a faulty logic board, but why would diagnostics be okay, then? Not trying to be hyperbole, just desperate.
Please help me rule keystroke logger out or at least, tell me so I know, so I can take appropriate action. If you think it could be the logic board with symptoms above, that would be a great too.
All I want to do is use the computer as intended, but I can't seem to get a real answer, so after nine months -- I am turning to the communities to see if anyone -- anyone at all -- can help. The last thing I can do is have the MBPR come back from the depot and the same thing occur. Any guidance or advice would be so gratefully appreciated.

  • No keyboard at login window after logout

    Hello all,
I'm just starting state testing and have been presented with a problem.  When a student logs out of a machine in order to log into the testing account the login window won't accept input from the keyboard.
    Bacground and details:
We have labs of computers using workgroup manager and open directory for management.  In a normal lab the machine will boot to a login window.  This is so that the preferences will be refreshed before a student logs in.  The student will login as a local user (student) and procede to do whatever for the day.
We have recently started state mandated testing.  I have set up an OD account which is very locked down and keeps the student on track while testing.  This requires someone to log the normal user out and login as the OD user.  This is where the problem arises.
About 50% of the time the keyboard will no longer funtion after logout.  No keys of any sort work. The mouse still works.  Even keystrokes through ARD do nothing.  A end user is then required to reboot the system in order to do ANYTHING.  This is not ideal for elementary kids.
From my digging in log files and poking around i noticed that the loginwindow process was hanging or crashing.  If i kill the process the login window blinks and then works just fine.  I'm sure i could write a logout script that drops a process into the background to kill the loginwindow process after so many seconds, but thats messy.  Has anyone seen this?  Any thoughts or solution? Only happens on a logout, never on an initial bootup.
I have found that 95% of these issues occur on Mac Mini's.  I can consistantly replicate the issue on a mini.  If i clone the mini to a macbook, i no longer have the problem (using carbon copy cloner).  So either the hardware is part of the issue or the clone fixed something in the process.

In those cases there may be threads and/or processes trying to do things with windows that they don't own. In other words, some programmers may have goofed up a little bit someplace.

  • OS 10.4.5 failure to startup-login window/ black screen/ blue screen-frozen

    Hi there,
To anybody that can help me, I thank you very much indeed in advance.
G4 Powerbook, 1.5gHz, 2gb Ram (1gb kingston ram added since purchase date), OS 10.4.5, security update 2006-002 (v1.1 (?) recently installed).
My current problem is that i cannot log into OS X. It boots as far as the login window, which is unresponsive, and then it then flicks to a black screen with 2 or 3 lines of white text and then flicks to a totally 'mac-blue' screen with the black arrow pointer still active.
    A history of my problem;
    1) Yes, unfortunately I tried to get front row to work on my machine (the hack with the front row enabler etc), and subsequently removed all traces of it after it screwed up a few things (menu bar missing, failure to restart). This tidy-up involved doing something with system library, bezel services...etc.
    2) I recently installed the first version of security update 2006-002. i am not saying this is the cause, but sometime after I did this, things started going wrong again. another thing i did recently which i hadnt in the past was to have itunes appear at startup and a few days later i emptied my hard drive of all my music and had this linked to a lacie 250gb via firewire 800. The problem at this was that login/startup was incredibly slow and sometimes the finder would keep relaunching itself on its own once the operating system was up and running. Also, when i tried safe boot, the login window would appear and then it would flick to a black screen. it would let me type in a username, but it would not let me input anything for the password.(I did use disk utility to repair permissions when i did manage to logon).
This whole problem seemed to go away for a day or two, but the login was still slower than usual the past few days.
I then turned on my powerbook this morning and login was extremely long and never completed fully- lots of pinwheel spins, menu bar not loading, itunes not appearing.
    After a few forced shutdowns I left the computer for maybe 5-10 mins and it seemed to sort itself out after a few finder relaunches etc, and so i tried a few things;
    3) I tried installing the newer version of the security update 2006-002 version 1.1 i think? At the same time i took itunes off the startup launches and also switched off auto login for my account (a silly idea it seems).
Since restarting from the security update, the operating system gets to the login window, which is unresponsive, and then it then flicks to a black screen with 2 or 3 lines of white text and then flicks to a totally 'mac-blue' screen with the black arrow pointer still active.(this is with the power adaptor connected only, no other cables etc)
I have tried Resetting PRAM, and using fsck, although I am slightly unsure as to whether or not this is useful to me anyway. I cannot reinstall the operating system until next week as my mum has my copy of tiger at home a few hundred miles away!
Any help at all would be so greatly appreciated, especially on the eve of my two year anniversary with my powerbook!
    Kind regards,
    Henry Harker

    Hi Henry
I've just encountered this problem with one of our computers at work. Hopefully this will help.
It's a Login Window Prefs problem. It's probably corrupted so you need to remove the prefs file.
    1. Startup in safe mode (hold down shift). You should get a login window for the master admin account.
    2. Delete the file: userName>Library>Preferences>com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    3. Restart.
Let me know how you go.
    Cheers
    MattD
    PowerMac G5, dual 2.5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

  • On startup of Mac Mini running OS Mavericks login windows are invisible. Login is possible but there are no white boxes for username and password. Keyboard inputs also do not display.

Mac Mini with 2 Ghz Intel Core i7 running OS X 10.9.1. Recent problem with startup screen where I get a gray startup screen that is blank and does not show the login windows for username or password. Mousing over where they should be does provide a cursor change and I can click into the invisible window and login. Also, I can just type the information and hit enter and login without problems but the keystrokes do not appear either. This is not a big problem if I make sure that I type my login information correctly, but if I make a mistake it can be difficult make sure I am in the right place before I retype. Any ideas why the screen is just gray and does not show the windows? Once I type in the login info in the invisible windows and hit enter the computer starts up, loads finder, and runs without any other noticeable problems.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Login window doesn't show up after installing

So I downloaded all the updated released yesterday, including 10.5.2 combo update, Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 & iLifeSupport 8.2. Then I installed them all, restarted my Mac just fine. However, after I installed Application Enhancer & logged out, the login window couldn't show up ever since.
Then I tried the following solutions:
1 startup in single-user mode, fully mounted the boot volume, removed /Library/Application Enhancers & /Library/Preferences/Application Enhancer.prefPane ; then I tried to reboot, login window didn't show up.
2 startup in single-user mode again, fully mounted the boot volume, used the following command:
    mv /Library/StartupItems StartupItemsOld
    mv /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist preferenceOld
    mv /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist loginwindowOld
    mv /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService DirectoryServiceOld
rebooted again, login window still doesn't show up.
So if anyone could help me out, Thank you very very much!
also, I found two strange files in the root directory: mach_kernel, mach_kernel.ctfsys. What are this two files for?

Sounds like you need to run the repair disk routine on the installation disk's version of Disk Utility. Failing that, you could try going into single user mode on startup. Restart the Mac while holding both CMD & S. When you see the code screen and prompt >, type *fsck -fy* (note the space after the k) then hit return. Hopefully things get repaired. Once complete type reboot and hit return

  • Login window crashes

    Hi
My macbook pro keeps crashing when I try to change from one user to another, it also crashes when I try to go back to the login window. The blue screen appears and then about 5 mintes later a message appears telling me to restart the computer, when I restart everything works fine, but after allowing me to change user once the problem comes back.

Hi Azharislam, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Facebook Login Window Position on screen

I am working on a kiosk application that must be ADA compliant. Since the screen is vertical and designed for a standing adult, to be ADA comliant, there must be a mode where the UI is all on the lower portion of the screen. This is simple except that I cannot get the Facebook Login window to display in the lower portion of the screen, it will only appear in the center in a new OS window. The LoginWindow class has two properties of width and height that can be set, but not the position of the window on the screen. Is there a way to set a position for where the Facebook Login window appears on screen?

That sounds like an OS level question rather than an AIR specific question.  You may have better luck searching for support on your OS.

  • Screensharing login window won't quit

I have had this problem over a year now. We have 3 Macs in the house - two iMacs and my MacBook Pro. Both the iMacs have screensharing enabled in their System Preferences. On my MBP, in the Finder window sidebar I select one of the other mac to view. I get the usual screensharing login window, I enter the info. and hit connect and it never connects. The window will never quit neither can I dismiss the window even by quitting screen sharing app. I have not been able to find the exact process that is responsible for this window in the Activity Monitor so I could atleast terminate the process there. The only way I could then get out of the mess is to log out and then log in. Here's a little caveat. If when the login window is sitting there stubbornly trying to log in and I have quit the Screensharing app, I go back to the Finder window, select the same Mac and hit Share Screen button, it will immediately connect. But the log in window will still sit there and there is no way I can dismiss it other than to log out and log in. - It's really annoying I have not been able to figure out as to why this happens. Anyone know about this? It's been about 15 minutes now, and the window is still there. It doesn't time out either! Well, I got to go log out now (after I post this post)

Yes, I have had this issue and it is quite annoying.  If you go to Activity Monitor and Force Quit 'NetAuthAgent,' it will kill the login box (make sure you have 'All Processes' listed in Activity Monitor).  How to keep it from happening, I have no idea, but this at least gets the login box to go away.

  • Login Window's Name & Password dimmed & freezed when trying to log in...

This problem keeps cropping up quite frequently, especially if I logged out of a OD account and immediately logging into another OD account: the name and password entered will dim and the Login Window will just freeze. There is no problem for local accounts and I still can SSH into this "frozen" computer and reboot the system. It occurs on all my Mac computers running Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) whether it is PPC or x86.
Looking at that "frozen" computer log, a successful loggin in will include these lines in system.log:
    Mar 18 21:13:49 MH-Production-DC1100 SecurityAgent[141]: Showing Login Window
Mar 18 21:13:56 MH-Production-DC1100 SecurityAgent[141]: User Authenticated: continue login process

I would not get this and the other following lines of authorizationhost:
    MH-Production-DC1100 authorizationhost[140]: afp_LLMountAuth: args are: inTargetURL = afp://rphome.i-nusmachub.org.sg/Users\ninMountDir = /private/Network/Servers/sc1001.i-nusmachub.org.sg/Volumes/LUN5.one/Users\ninMa xPath = 1024\noutMountPoint = /private/Network/Servers/sc1001.i-nusmachub.org.sg/Volumes/LUN5.one/Users\ninOp tions = 0000083c
    Does anyone has a solution?

What is the server (model & specs) & what are the clients ?
Fast clients with a slow server can be one problem, due to how fast OS X boots.
    See
Past that, since you can ssh into a frozen client machine, set this up in advance on a couple workstations.
On the client set AFP debugging via, for example:
    sudo defaults write -g com.apple.AppleShareClientCore -dict-add afpdebugsyslog -int 1
    sudo defaults write -g com.apple.AppleShareClientCore -dict-add afpdebuglevel -int 6
afpdebugsyslog = 1 (turns on debugging)
    afpdebuglevel = <1-8>
Then, add the following line to /etc/syslogd.conf
    *.debug /var/log/debug.log
    Final two steps:
    issue
    sudo touch /var/log/debug.log
    and
    sudo killall -HUP syslogd
Then, try logging out and back in with a different usernameloginwindow, and check debug.log
and system.log on that client machine.
