Keep TC-Partition mounted

I was screening several discussion groups since days w/o success to find an answer to my problem...
My desired TC-usage would be to store content of iTunes, iPhoto an iMovie on it. I created 2 partitions thatfore - one for TM-backups and one for file storage. Now I want to mount the second partition so it always allows those applications to access it. Unfortuantely it only keeps mounted as long as TM is backing up, than it is gone. When starting i.e. iPhoto, it can´t find its library anymore and shutting down.
Can someone please help with the correct settings I have to make? Appreciate any help. Thanks.

Re partitioning: I used the buttom "Partition" in Disk Utility.app Might be that it does not create a Partition but an Image.
Disk Utility cannot partition a Time Capsule's internal disk.
Did you partition the +sparse bundle+ that's on the TC's internal disk? If so, don't. That's for Time Machine's exclusive use. Use Disk Utility to remove it and expand the original partition to fill the space.
If you created a disk image, as Bob suggests, be sure it's not inside Time Machine's sparse bundle.

  • Additional, encrypted partition mounted as /Users

Recently I removed DVD-ROM drive from my MacBook Pro and installed 60GB SSD for system (in regular HDD bay) and my old HDD instead of DVD drive.
My plan is to use fast SSD drive for system and the HDD for data.
I would like to have my HDD partition mounted as /Users so all users' home directories are stored on HDD.
I read this article: http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/1935/lions-whole-disk-encryption but it seams there is a problem with logging in if the user's home directory resides on separate encrypted partition.
    My question is:
Is there any chance I can have "fully functional" /Users directory mounted as additional encrypted partition?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hi Linc,
    Thanks for your answer.
No, because the Users volume would already have to be unlocked and mounted before you could log in, and that's impossible.
I don't think it is impossible. I would reather say: "Apple makes it difficult to do".
I barely see any problem with mounting other partitions on the system level during boot.
The question is: "How hard is it to do that now?"
The second question is: "When (and how) Apple will make it easier?"
The best you could do would be to log in, mount the volume as root at /Users, then log out and log in again. I wouldn't recommend that you try this.
Yeah... I don't feel like log in two times. I wouldn't recommend it either.
I have another idea which is:
    1. Mount addtitional encrypted partition as /Volumes/Whatever
    2. Create directories like:
    /Volumes/Whatever/Documents
    /Volumes/Whatever/Pictures
    /Volumes/Whatever/Music
    /Volumes/Whatever/Library
    3. Mount these directories in places under /Users/MyUser/... during login.
    So there are other questions:
    1. How to do it the "Mac way"?
    2. There are maybe some directories which probably can not be mounted this way as its content can be necessary for login process to perform (probably some subdirectories of Library). Is it the case?
    Cheers,
    Mike

  • "Lag" when Nautilus is opened with NTFS partition mounted

Hi, I have a problem with Nautilus 3.14. I have a mounted shared Windows partition with the options below in fstab:
    defaults,nls=utf8,umask=000,uid=1000,gid=1000,windows_names,hide_dot_files,hide_hid_files
Everytime I open Nautilus, it "lags" (I don't know what to call it. It freezes and then be usable again for an uncertain amount of time). Tried to unmount the ntfs partition and it worked flawlessly. Nautilus' shell output doesn't show anything strange (just some random GTK warning).
This "lag" doesn't happen when I use Nemo. It runs well with the NTFS partition mounted.
Is anyone knows the solution or has the same problem?

I can't believe it. It's a 2 week old harddrive. a western digital suposed to be good quality.
Have I broken it or what ?
I have made a badblocks scan before trying to use it and found no problem. I'll try again but I fear loosing data any moment now :-(((
Western Digital is great but every manufacturer ships out defective drives now and again. Run a hard test with Sea Tools or the WD equivalent and if anything comes up, call them immediately. Your drive is still under warranty if it's brand new so they should replace it for free.

  • Reinstalling OS X but keeping Windows partition?

I know I have seen this question around before, but can't seem to come up with a decent answer... I am going to reinstall OS X on my MacBook Pro for a variety of reasons, but am afraid of the losing my 20GB Windows XP partition. Is it possible to keep the partition during this process?
    Thanks!

Is it possible to keep the partition during this process?
Yes. Just reinstall Mac OS X normally. Other partitions won't be affected unless manually erased.

I've tried several times with the newest Firefox update and several older versions, 3.0 and newer. But I keep running into the same error message when I try to install: mounting failed. What can I do?

Thank you, TonyE, who posted the answer that I suspected:
"The last version of Firefox that works on OS X 10.3.9 is Firefox 2.0.0.20, current release versions of Firefox require at least OS X 10.4, and Firefox 4 will require at least OS X 10.5"

  • How can I keep bootable partitions from showing when I want to use my usb stick without the option command at boot up?

Im using a usb stick with bootable diagnostic partitions and a extra partition for diags that run in the OS. When i want to use diagnostics from this extra partition on a mac thats already booted, I have to wait for all the bootable partitions to mount as well as the one partition that I need. Is there a way to hide these bootable partitions when using the usb drive as a storage device to run diags in the OS?
    Thanks

I think I may have to look into a redirect line in my htaccess file so that direct loads of my mp3's route through my website page.
If you do this you may find iTunes won't read the files, so I should test carefully on one file first if possible.

  • Thunar doesn't show the partitions mounted in fstab[SOLVED]

    Hi everyone,
I am running XFCE 4.10 in archlinux and today when i added couple of partitions to fstab and rebooted my system I noticed that thunar doesn't show the partitions that I added to my fstab. what should i do to make it appear in thunar ?
    here is my fstab:
    /dev/sda5 /media/disk ntfs-3g defaults 0 0
    /dev/sda2 /media/disk-1 ntfs-3g defaults 0 0
Last edited by pyarch (2012-10-03 22:03:54)

Maybe an old thread, but I came up with a different solution. By default Thunar mounts NTFS partitions under
    /run/media/<username>/<UUID of NTFS drive> .
If the fstab is updated with a path different from above for your NTFS partitions, they end up not being displayed in bookmarks.
So, to overcome this, create your mount points in
    /run/media/<username>/<mount point dir>
and point to those dirs while adding entries to fstab.

  • Can't access to Fat Partition - Mount problem

    Dear all
A few months ago I used disk utility and perform a partition. The idea was 3 partitions, 1 for mac (Journaled), 1 for bootcamp (NTFS) and 1 for transfer between the OSs (FAT).
And it worked OK, I can use mac when I want and Windows too, I put the files in the fat partition and read/write without any problem in the 2 OSs.
So, the fat partition for a lot of months worked OK, and almost all my files were saved in that partition, but last week I was copying too many gigas to the fat partition and I checked that fat partition was almost full. I thought well, usually mac tells you that is not enough space and you cannot copy more files, but IT DIDN'T DO IT and allow to copy and copy and copy. Well I continued working, later I turn off my computer (no close the lid) and at the next day when I turned on and started in MAC the partition doesn't appear. OMG!!!.....  I entered to the disk utility and went to "Fisrt Aid", performed Verify, and Repair and it doesn't work.
It says.... bla bla bla,,, can`t repair, Back Up.... But How to Backup if there is not the option to access to the partition. In windows it says format?,, Of course not!
I tried to contact Mac support (I still have warranty, until April 16), but no solution was given.
I know that information is there, but I don't know how to recover and mount again the partition, because I have not formatted the partition. I have read a lot but before perform any action I would like to consult with you. I don't want to use apps that look for file to file, I just want to open my fat partition, find my organised folders and save the information in other place.
    My info:
    OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    MacBook Pro (13, Mid 2012)
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Storage: 1 TB
Fat partition: disk0s4 (Capacity 199.86 GB (199,860,682,752 Bytes))
    Please, Can you help me?
    Attached an image!!!
    Thank you in advance!!!
Note: Sorry if I put in the wrong Category this post.

    Hi!!
Well, after reading and trying to find the solution by mac, it was found in Windows.
    MMM, well Attached the solution
So, let's to save the information!!!!!!

  • Keep extra partition on deployment with MDT 2013

    hello all,
I am using MDT 2013 to make the
deployment of some workstations in the company,
however they all have an extra
    partition (D: \),
doing some testing I noticed that the

disk, not just on the C:\ drive.
Is it possible to get the MDT format
    just drive the system keeping
    the extra drive (D:\)?

if you are just replacing the OS, then I recommend the "Refresh" scenario. Refresh will take an existing Machine and refresh it to a new OS version, persisting the existing partition configuration.

  • Vfat partition mount issue [Solved]

I have two fat32 partitions (/dev/sda5 and /dev/sda6) that I cannot seem to mount automatically on bootup
The error given is "mount point does not exist"
However the directories that they mount into do exist - running "mount /dev/sda5" works fine once I am logged in
This mounts them into the correct folders
    my fstab is:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system>        <dir>         <type>    <options>          <dump> <pass>

The three file system checks happen ok, but then the errors appear about the non-existant mount points
As you can see from my fstab I have tried mounting them into /mnt/documents etc as well, which also returns the errors
I would be prefer a nice clean fix but would be happy with a script that ran on login etc to run "mount /dev/sda5" but dont know how to do that or where to put it
    Thanks

    rgeo,
probably /home is not yet mounted when the system trys to mount /dev/sda5.
I suppose that mounting order in /etc/fstab matters, even though I am not sure.
That would not explain why mounting in /mnt failed, if the directory documents existed.
You can always put the line 'mount /dev/sda5' on /etc/rc.local that gets executed before login.

It looks like the output itself is just repeated. I don't think your partitions are actually mounted multiple times. You can always run "mount" to see whats mounted.

  • Keep NAS Drive mounted after logout?

Not sure if this is possible but I would like to logout of the server but still have the NAS mounted so retrospect can run the backups.
I know you can use cocktail to enable external drives to stay mounted but this seems to only apply to attached drives like firewire, not NAS, is this right?

Cheers for the reply, I am connecting using AFP, it is a Lacie Big Disk and I think it does support NFS so I'll give that a go.
The reason I don't have it directly attached is for extra security, I keep the Backup drives away from the server, though we are in the process of organising an offsite system so this may not be such an issue then.
