Keeping 2 phones synced together

Hi there,
I have a 3G iPhone that I want to keep as my "backup" phone, just in case something "happens" to my 3GS. Is there an EASY way to keep both phones synced together so that the data on both is exactly the same?
I dont have exchange, so thats a no-go and I dont want to have to constantly be "backing up" and "restoring from backup" to sync call's, SMS's and such.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
-Aaron

Keep making normal backups of your new phone. Don't let pictures accumulate in the camera roll. Download them to your computer and sync the ones you want on your phone to the phone's photo album. Backups don't include the camera roll.
If you ever need to use the old phone, disable automatic syncing using this procedure when connecting the old phone to iTunes: "Prevent automatic syncing one time, without changing settings: Open iTunes. Then, as you connect iPhone to your computer, press and hold Command-Option (on a Mac) or Shift-Control (on a PC) until you see iPhone appear in the sidebar. "
When the phone appears in iTunes, select the summary tab and select "Restore". When iTunes offers to make a backup, select the "Don't Back Up" option. After the Restore is complete, Tunes will present the "Set Up Your iPhone" dialog. Select the "restore from a backup of " option and select the latest backup for your new phone from the list.
Information such as mail settings, text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, certain network settings, and other preferences including settings and data from third-party applications purchased from the App Store will be restored from the backup. Your info data (contacts, calendars, Safari bookmarks), music, videos, and applications will be reloaded by iTunes as they were before the restore. However, the applications will not be in the same order.
Read this article to help make sense of this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
This procedure will allow you to essentially "clone" your new phone onto the backup one without constantly syncing it. At most, you will lose the info after your last sync/backup of the new phone.

  • Why is my brother and my phones synced together?

We share my moms credit card to the account. We both use it to download stuff from the app store. Is there another way to stop the syncing of both o our phones together? A way other than making separate accounts? I have his contacts and e has mine. When I download an app he gets it as well and vise versa. PLEASE HELP WE'RE GOING CRAZY!
    Thanks

iTunes will send purchased apps to any iOS device linked to the iTunes account (with the credit card).  One way to manage 'who has which app' is when you wire up your iPod/iPhone/iPad to iTunes on your computer and Sync. Click on the name of your device in the iTunes sidebar - choose 'Apps' from the menu bar - tick the ones you want or untick those that you don't - then click the Sync button at the bottom right.
I manage my family's 5 iOS devices from my MacBook Pro and one iTunes account - and we definitely all want different Apps!

Ok, sorry. And yes, I just restored my iPhone as new and tried to put all the songs on there before I even restored with my previous backup, but it still does the same thing... even when I just checked the option to sync only "selected music or videos". How's that possible?
P.S. After I tried syncing with checked songs only, nothing showed up under Music on my phone and this message popped up in iTunes: "The iPhone "..." could not be synced because the sync session failed to finish." If you could, please tell me what that means, thanks.

    Hello ashlyn888,
Based on your post it sounds like you would like to sync your iBooks content with your computer. I have located an article that may help you in this situation. While you can sync this data with your computer you can also use the sharing button to send PDFs using various sources:

If youre like me, I have so many Apple devices, I always move things over manually rather than remember what to sync and what not to sync........ There’s an option to UNCHECK sync on any device if that helps you in ITUNES.
On any device, like your phone, in ITUNES you can check the option for manual vs. automatically sync.

  • How can I sync my Contcts list from my iPhone with my iPad?  My contacts are my life, and I usually keep my phone the most up-to-date. I need both to be the same.

How can I sync the Contacts list on my iPhone 5 to my iPad?
As a businessman, my Contacts are my life, as well as containing a lot of personal information. I usually keep my phone
up-to-date, only taking my pad on trips, but it's essential that I have both the same.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Sync your iPad with computer iTunes.
Note: your contacts should be in computer Outlook (Windows) or Contacts (Mac) application.
If you have iCloud configured in iPhone, do the same for iPad.
    Setttings > iCloud >
         Account: your Apple ID
         Contacts: ON
         Documents & Data: ON

  • HT1386 How do we keep one phone contacts seperate from the other when syncing with itunes

How do you keep one phones contacts, calendar, etc from another phone when syncing with itunes?

    Disable auto-syncing. Here’s how:
    1. Before you plug the iPhone or iPod into the computer, go to iTunes.
    2. On a Mac, go to the iTunes menu -> Preferences -> Devices.
On a PC, go to Edit -> Settings -> Devices
    3. In the pop up window, look for the icon or tab that says Devices. Choose it.
    4. Just below the box, you’ll see a checkbox reading "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically."
    5. Check it and click OK at the bottom of the window.
Now when you plug the phone in it won't automatically star syncing.

  • ITunes match is keeping my phone from syncing.

So I've been stumped the past couple days as to why my phone would not sync.
It would get stuck at the "Waiting for sync to start"
Then I would get some error about how the Sync couldn't start.
So I restore my phone. Set up as new phone hoping this would fix the problem.
It did, restoring and setting up as new phone allowed me to sync my phone.
So I sync a couple of my apps to my phone and decide to use my phone for a while.
Turn on iTunes match on my phone so I can hear some of my music.
Then I decide to sync more apps to my phone that I had forgotten earlier when I was Syncing my phone.
And no luck. Stuck back at "Waiting for sync to sart"
This has happened a couple times now, I've had to restore multiple times.
Everything is up to date, my iPhone is up to date, so is iTunes.
My phone syncs perfectly fine until I turn iTunes match on via my iPhone.
    THIS IS REALLY ANNOYING.
    Anyone have a solution?
    Or having the same problem?

Same deal, seemingly. iPhone 4S 64GB, Lion, iTunes 10.5.3, iTunes Match On (i.e., all the latest, but nothing beta).
What I've just found strong evidence of is a connection between this "waiting for sync to start" issue and the whole "loads of empty playlists" issue. Whether this ties in to the faux-over-capacity issue I don't know, but I've got that bug too.
    Here's the lowdown:
Noticed my capacity / over-capacity fluctuating awhile ago, but it always seemed to sort itself out. It still goes back and forth, but now I've noticed I just hang on "Waiting for sync to start." Actually, it's been doing that for a few weeks I think, but I wasn't paying close attention since all I cared about syncing during that period was getting music onto the phone, which iTunes Match managed to handle in its own ham-fisted, not-ready-for-prime-time way.
Just a minute ago, though, I looked at the iPhone's "iTunes Wi-Fi Sync" info page (wi-fi sync is off; iCloud sync has been long on, and seems to do its thing nicely in the background; last time 4am this morning). Guess what? Last direct iPhone to iTunes sync was on 20 January 2012. And guess what that corresponds to? It was the last sync before I created a playlist on the iPhone that subsequently spawned 32,000 blank playlists of the same name (I created the problem playlist whilst staying at a hotel with no Wi-Fi; a lack/breach in solid internet connection has been linked to the cause of this problem, according to other forums).
Side note: I used a script someone published to delete all these blank playlists. It took about a day to do it. And it worked, insofar as all the blank lists disappeared from the Mac version of iTunes (they stayed on the iPhone, alas, or some did -- it's impossible to gauge the quantity of them). Alas, about 2,000 of them re-appeared this morning on the Mac iTunes, but running the script deleted them within 30 seconds; they're still on the phone as far as I can tell.
Anyway, I might wait for iOS 5.1 or go ahead and RESET ALL SETTINGS (as was suggested on another thread) and restore from iCloud backup (possibly chancing it by going with iOS 5.1 beta 3 while I'm at it). I've never tried restoring from iCloud before, but imagine it "might be some time" as the Brits facetiously say, especially here in Outer Mongolia with good but not brilliant internet speeds.

  • MobileMe calendar sync consistently failing to keep things in sync

    Hello,
I've been noticing for quite a while that in my setup, mobileme sync keeps failing to keep contacts in sync.
My setup is quite basic: 1 iphone, 1 mobileme account, 1 macbook pro.
The iphone is set to push contacts, calendars, and bookmarks.
The mac is set to sync automatically the changes.
Whenever I modify a contact card in my iphone, after a few days I notice the data has been reverted back to the original data. For example, I add a phone number to X contact. After a few days, the number has disappeared. Beejive uses the contacts to store the IM id of each contact: however contacts consistently lose this added data after a while.
I cannot tell exactly how long it takes, because I don't look for it, I jsut notice after a while.
I first noticed this almost 1 year ago when I bought my iphone 3g.. I was all happy taking pictures of my co workers to store in their contact cards.. after a few weeks I found a few of them who I was absolutely sure I had taken pictures of, but their contact cards were empty.
A few months ago I upgraded to a family pack, and just to be sure I created a new mobileme account and changed to that account at my mac and iphone.. but the problem keeps happening.
Any ideas? Am I the only one having this kind of paranormal mobileme sync?

Same here. We have two iphones (his and hers) which we sync to the desktops and with each other using MobileMe. Just this week we noticed it: every time my wife enters an event from her iphone it creates a new calendar that shows up in Mobile Me and on my iphone and contains not only the new entry but assorted other entries (not very many) that were formerly displayed in the default calendar. Oddly, while MobileMe and my iphone both show two calendars, my wife's iphone only shows one calendar that has ALL the entires on it. Very strange. Apple must have made some change recently that causes this. Hope they fix it soon.

    HI,
In effect this is a DNS block.
    You can do it.
You need to be in an Admin Mac User Account that has  non blank password.
Go to the Applications/Utilities folder and open Terminal.
You should see your shortname (the one under the Little House icon) followed by the $ symbol
Copy and paste the bold text below into Terminal after the $ symbol.
    sudo pico /etc/hosts
This will load the file "hosts" into and editor that works in Terminal.
Use the arrow keys to get to the line with Verisign in it.
Now type the # symbol and it will be added in front of the character that is highlighted.
The # symbol is either Shift +3 or ALT+ 3 depending on your keyboard layout
Now use CTRL and O keys together.
    This Saves the changes.
    Quit Terminal.

  • How well do two computer sync together?

I have an iMac, but I now really want a laptop too, which I''m sure I'd make great use of. I'm wondering how well I'd be able to get the two computers to sync together.
Would iTunes, in particular, sync it's library, or would I have two seperate libraries; playcounts and playlits?
Is there ways to work on a file, say Photoshop, save it on the laptop, and sync it to the iMac to continue working on it from there, etc.?
Would I be able to sync iPhoto, iCal, Safari (bookmarks) etc., and other similar programmes?
Is there ways to sync on the fly, or hit a 'sync now' button and it would wirelessly syncronise everything?
    Thanks

Folder sync software may not work properly with database files, so in addition maybe consider a sync app like, (as an alternative to .Mac):
    http://www.markspace.com/synctogether.php
I have no experience with either, but have been thinking about trying them out to keep my two Macs in sync. Right now I just use file sharing and iTunes music sharing, but I think it would be handy to keep both updated for convenience and backup purposes. With File Sharing you can access your home directory on the other computer as a network drive, that capability is built-in to the Mac.
Are you currently using a wired or wireless network for your iMac? If it's wired, but also has wireless capability, you can use the iMac to share the wired connection over the wireless antenna with the MacBook. Also, you can share a printer between the two computers. Internet/file/printer sharing works between Macs and PCs, if you should have a house guest who brings a PC along occasionally.

  • I need to change my account information so my devices will sync together but i can log onto my old itunes account because i dont have that email and forgot that password, what can i do?

i need to change my account information so my devices will sync together, however i do not have my email my ipod account is linked to and i dont remeber the password. In short i need to remove my ipod from my old itunes account but i cant log on to that old account. What can i do?

You'll need to reset the password that account then before you can transfer these purchases to your iTunes library and your iPhone.

If that doesn't work, you'll need to contact Apple support directly by phone and have them walk you through resetting the account information.

  • How can I keep Contacts in sync with CardDAV?

    Hello,
I am trying to find a way to automatically keep my contacts (and calendars, but will focus on contacts here) in sync with external devices.
Currently I have host a CardDAV server using Owncloud. I have my OS X Contacts linked to the CardDAV account, but this results in TWO separate databases of contacts. The local one and the CardDAV one. I have found no easy way to keep them in sync. I need the remote one in order to sync other (Android) devices to it.
So I am now looking at using OS X Server and ditching Owncloud. Just having the local contacts share from a local OS X Server. With Server being only $20, I am fine with going that way. As I don't really need my data synced to the cloud. It's fine to sync over my local network.
For some smart Apples out there... I have a few questions:
    1) Is there a way to keep local contacts and remote CardDAV contacts synchronised?
    2) (...if not) Is there a way to use OS X Server to run as a CardDAV server which my other devices can then access over the local network?
I have installed Server. And I activated sharing of contacts. But I could find no info/instructions on how to access that from a client device. What is the server URL for the CardDAV server?
Thank you for helping with this. Very keen to get all my devices sharing their data WITHOUT using third-party services like Google, etc.

You're right. Now that I think through it, I'm not sure it is possible as you have duplicates.
There is a "Look for Duplicates" command, but I think it limits itself to duplicates in the same account.
You could export all of the On My Mac contacts to vCard, then delete them out of Contacts.
Then, go into Contacts Preferences and set you CardDAV server as default.
Double-click the exported vCard to import. It should try to import them into your CardDAV server.
Click the button to Review Duplicates when the import dialog appears.
You can then click the Apply to All checkbox and choose Keep Old. That should import all the non-duplicates and leave the originals on the cardDAV server account.
I would then run the Look for Duplicates with the CardDAV account selected in Contacts group pane. If you have any that were not identified as duplicates during the import, you should find them with that.
As to the Server, there is a Server forum, here. You might ask there.
