Keeping 2 versions of IMovie

Is it possible to keep 2 versions of IMovie (04 & 08) and switch between them. My daughter is used to using version 04 for her school projects and I like version 08 for mine. can leopard handle both at the same time? My daughter has a macbook 13 inch with snowleopard. when her computer crash, all her programs were updated to the latest version. now she wants IMovie04 back.

Hi
leopard
No - as I get it neither does iMovie HD - only iMovie HD6 (but this is really good)
To get both You need to
• get iLife 6 (only aval. as second handed - try e-bay)
• Un-install all iLife'08
• Install iLife 6
• Then re-install iLife'08
Now iMovie HD 6 - will be in Applications/iMovie previous versions - folder
iMovie'09 are much better than iMovie'08 btw.
iMovie HD6 and iDVD09 are a great combination - most of us love it.

  • The new updated version of iMovie 10 won't let me open my previous files I created before the update today. I have a wedding that I'm trying to finish and deliver and now I can't because that file version won't open. I keep getting an error message

    Hello,
Please help me figure this out. I'm very unhappy at the moment. I'm fustrated and don't have any idea how to revert to the original version before the update was done on iMovie 10. I NEVER hated APPLE until NOW!! I love APPLE products and apps so please help me stay in that mindset. So I worked on some movie projects when I got my macbook pro 6 months ago. I update reguarly. I saw the update prompt and honestly, I did not think I would have ANY issuess with opening my previous files that I created only a few months ago with this updated version. The new updated version of iMovie 10 won't let me open my previous files I created before the update today. I have a wedding that I'm trying to finish and deliver and now I can't because that file version won't open. I keep getting an error message and the iMovie app closes. Last night I saw the file and tried to open it but no luck. Error message came up again. I reboot and turned off my laptop for the evening and tried again just now but nothing!! I need that video. My job depends on it! I worked so hard on this wedding video and now it's lost and won't open. I work another job and don't have much time. I really don't want to start all over again. Please help me. Thanks so much for your assistance.

I also have Jolly's problem. I found the iMovie 9.0.9 folder and tried to launch the older version of iMove. It would not launch. I removed all of the iMovie preferences from the Preferences folder, removed iMove 10 from the applications folder, and restarted my Mac. iMove 9.0.9 still won't launch and I can't access my videos created with the older version of iMovie. Is there a way to uninstall iMovie 10 and reinstall iMovie 9.0.9?

  • I currently have Mac OSX 10.4.11, and I just purchased OSX Snow Leopard. Can I keep my original version of iMovie along with the new one when I download the new operating system?

I currently have Mac OSx 10.4.11, and just purchased OSX Snow leopard.  Can I keep my original version of iMovie along with the new version when I download the new operating system?

I purchased the Mac Box Set which includes Snow Leopard, iLife, and iWork.  So after downloading the box set, will I be able to keep my iMovie 6.0.3?

  • How can I keep the old version of iMovie when I add the new version?

In the past, when I new version of iMovie came out, I kept the old working version by puttting it inito a folder, and labeled it 'Old iMovie', or some such.  When I installed the new version, it didn't recognize that folder, and left the old version alone. That way, if there were bugs/problems with the new version, I could always revert to the "old" version, without probems.
    Would that still work?
    Thanks
    Hal
PS:  How is the new version working?

You don't need to move anything around. Apple has anticipated that some people may prefer to use the old version along with the new one, so when you update to iMovie 10, a script runs that puts your iMovie 9 into a folder inside your Applications folder:
    /Applications/iMovie 9.0.9
People are having a lot of problems with the new version. You can look through this forum to find out what they are, and see if there are workarounds.
I updated to 10, updated all my Projects and Events, and began using it; but after about 10 days decided to go back to 9. I'll try 10 again when Apple releases an update to fix the problems and add back some of the features they stripped out.

  • How do you allow an audio clip to keep playing after a video clip fades out at the end of an iMovie? I want the audio clip to fade out later... this used to be easy in an older version of iMovie.

I just updated to iMovie 11. I want the final music to play beyond the last video clip and fade out. How do I do this? Do I need to import a black screen?

Yes, I've done this, but I can't figure out how to get the audio to fade. I think I need to explain further. This is really a simple movie made from multiple photo stills from my son's school. There are cross fade transition betwee the stills, and some titiles that cross fade too. So there is not actual video. Thus everything shows only in the project library, where I dragged in the photo stills to import them. There is nothing in the event (or is in the clip) window in the bottom. I can't figure out how to get the volume lines to show for the audio clip in the project library as they did in the old version of iMovie so I could drag them up or down.

  • I've kept the old version od imovie (6.0.4) through three migrations and now have it on a mac 10.6.8. i prefer it to the new one, but it has recently begun to give me serious problems. is it becoming obsolete?

i've always thought imovie 6.0.4 was the superior product. i've used it edit semi-profesional films. its easy and intuitive, and always gives you what you want, while looking profesional. i have final cut pro, which i use when i have more time or the project is of more importance, but i still love the ease and simplicity of the old imovie. i've migrated it over 4 computers and it has worked fine till about a week ago. it now takes up to 20 minutes to load, frequently drops out. leaves phantom and relic snipets of audio. is there any way i can fix this problem and keep my beloved imovie 6.0.4? can download it from a third party? are the issues because the .app is going obsolete or are there just new bugs on my computer? i've recently uninstalled all my adobe products and put them onto another computer, could that be it? help me obi won, you're my only hope!

    klaus 1,
thanx for the reply. i'm on a 10.6.8 snow leopard.
yes, it did arrive via migration, but had been working well for over 2 years, and two years before that on a 10.5, where it had migrated from a mac book g4 where i used it regularly. through all that time and migration, not a single problem
i can't pinpoint the exact 'original' problem, because i'm currently working on two different editing jobs (one serious [a kickstarted campaign] the other, not so much, for my son's pre-school graduation, i was making the school a little video for their website). so during this time, i'm using a combo of; imovie, adobe premiere and final cut pro. and i've had so much pulsing through my computer (and external hard drives), literally hundreds of gigs of HD video, tons of tiff and jpeg files, and much mp4 and aif music files. i often had three or four major applications all open and running simultaneously, so who knows how this all started. but one day, i flipped open my mac, and just clicked on imovie, not a file mind you, but just the icon, and it took like 2 minutes to load (usually 5-10 seconds). i made sure all other apps and windows were closed and tried it again - now 3 minutes to load and it drops out mid edit. and it just kept getting worse.
AND THEN, AFTER IWROTE ABOVE 'I  -  ME' MADE THINGS, MUCH, MUCH WORSE.
i was aware that there is an old quicktime 7 that gets installed in a 10.6.8 to supplement the newer quicktime x and the various other programs, including imovie, that still use qt 7. i was a bit confused why there even is an icon for qt 7 in the utilities folder, since you never open it directly, it just works behind the scenes. but whatever.
after imovie started acting up, i looked up to see what programs that imovie uses, thinking the problem might be there and found an article that said there was actually an even earlier version of quicktime, (qt 7.0.3 i think) that was specifically made for imovie, but there hadn't been enough major changes in qt to bother imovie, but (there is always a but) there were changes coming that would begin to affect imovie. since the article (i wish i could link it here, sorry) was a year old, i  thought maybe the damaging upgrade was already made. so i found this older version of quicktime (the 7.0.3 version) and tried to install it, thinking it would fix my issue, i'd finish the edit, then delete it. but when i tried to open it, it told me, a newer version of of qt was on my computer and i couldn't install it. so very impulsively and idiotically i uninstalled quicktime 7, thinking i would just reinstall it later. but that's when everything went wrong.
SO I MUST STRESS THIS TO EVERYONE! NEVER NEVER NEVER UNINSTALL QUICKTIME.
apparently quick time x is preinstalled into the 10.6.8, in such a way, that its interconnected with like 12 other programs, that will all begin to act erradictly after it is uninstalled. then those 12 programs will each affect 5 more and soon, your computer, then your hard-drive is blown. i tried reinstalling quicktime, but could not. i tried every conceivable way, but could not even find it in any folder. it was gone. and so was qt x.
so when i uninstalled quicktime 7, it affected quick time x in such a way that it stopped working, then could not be found. then all h**l broke loose. every program began to run slowly and started dropping out. functionally, the computer became so slow, it was useless. even typing became slow. i still did not know about the 'never uninstall quick time rule' yet, so i looked for the problem else where.
i opened up activity monitor, and there were no programs eating up cpu, nothing that suspicious. but when i switched activity monitor to show usage in a descending order, i saw kernel task was using between 500-700% cpu. my fans started running furiously and my battery life dropped in half. i would switch off the computer, start it with reset, things would go well for a half hour, then kernel would spike, the computer would get red hot and the fans would go as fast as propellers. since the kickstarter campaign i was working on was on deadline, i had to keep working. so i went out and bought a laptop stand that allows airflow under the computer and has its own fan to cool the computer, that worked for about a day. but since the fan on the stand ran on power from the usb of my computer, my battery life went from very good, to completely dead. nothing. accidentally unplug the cord for a millisecond second, and the computer turns off. when i restart, the time is set to the day and time i bought the computer, and would undo my internet, and i'd have to reset my whole connection.
i spent twelve straight hours, through the night, using recovery programs, like pacifist, stellar phoenix, and others, but could not get quick time back. finally (like 4 hours ago) i called apple, and although i have no warranty or apple care, they took my call and we tried some things, which didn't work.
i had already run disk utility and exhausted all other options. and i was told by apple that since my computer was preloaded (no discs) i could not, erase and reboot, which wasn't really an option anyway.
so apple being the best run company in the country, sends me a new down loadable version of imovie, quick time 7 and quick time ten.
it hasn't arrived yet, but how cool is that?
i have to say though, i'm a bit worried about reinstalling by disc and have no real guarantee that everything will return to normal.
not to mention my battery is dead and snow leopard gives you no way of getting to it. it has to be replaced at an official apple certified store.
so lesson here, never, ever, never, uninstall quicktime. i hope no one else makes this mistake.
    thanx and good luck.

  • I have the new version of iMovie, and when i try to start the program, i can't because it says that it is looking for some movie files from the Iphoto, so all the program is locked up... how can i do to restart the program??

i have the new version of iMovie, and when i try to start the program, i can't because it says that it is looking for some movie files from the Iphoto, so all the program is locked up... how can i do to restart the program??

    Hi
Did You ever use - iPhoto ?
Did You may be direct iPhoto to a different Photo Library
As iMovie tries to find the appropriate photo library - it can get lost if iPhoto direct it into a Library on a not connected external hard disk or to a strange location - And iMovie HANGS.
Do - When no other program is running that might interfere
    • Start iPhoto - BUT NOW KEEP alt-key (option key) DOWN during the full Start-Up process
    • Now iPhoto let's You select Photo Library
    • Select the one in Your Account / Home folder / Pictures ! !
    • Then iPhoto should start up OK
    • Now Quit iPhoto
    • START iMovie
Does it still hangs - then I would suspect - iMovie Pref. file
If it Run's OK - Then HURRAY !

  • Audio/effects/transitions/titles from older versions of iMovie

I've discovered that iMovie 3 removed some content that was present in iMovie 2; specifically, the Water Ripple effect, and all the old stock audio clips. Granted, the new audio Skywalker Sound audio clips in iMovie 3 were better, but it'd still be nice to have access to the old ones too. So I have two questions:
Does anyone know if anything else was removed going from iMovie 3->4, 4->5, or 5->6?
Is there a way to get those old audio/effects back into later versions of iMovie? (Maybe a way to upgrade that preserves the older content, sort of like how you can upgrade iDVD 3 to iDVD 4 in order to keep the older iDVD 1 & 2 themes.)
Also another question: once upon a time, available for free download from Apple's website were a bunch of additional iMovie audio clips, background sets, etc. Alas, Apple has proven just as averse to preserving its past as nearly any other corporation: those files have long since been removed. Is there an archive of these anywhere?

Well after a bit of research I discovered that the old effect files can be integrated into later versions of iMovie. Basically what you have to do is right-click iMovie 2 and choose Show Package Contents. For the Water Ripple effect, navigate to Contents->Plug-ins, and copy the file Ripple.bundle, and create a copy of it to ~/Library/iMovie/Plug-ins. For the old stock audio sound effects, go back to the iMovie 2 package contents, navigate to Contents->Resources->Sound Effects, and copy all the files enclosed to ~/Library/iMovie/Sound Effects.
Of course you could always copy these files to the package contents of the later iMovie.app, but this way is a bit less of a "hack". (Oddly though when I tried just that, Ripple.bundle would only work when placed in iMovie->Contents->Plugins, not to be confused with the separate Plug-ins folder that it was stored in within iMovie 2.)
Anyway, hope this info helps somebody out there!

  • Why two versions of iMovie in my Mac?

    Hi,
after the upgrade to OSX Mavericks I have two versions of iMovie: the last and 9.9...why?
App store say me that I have to upgrade it but I have already the lastest version on my Mac. In launchpad I have the old version not the last.
In application folder I have the new app....WHAT HAPPEN?!?!
How can I remove the old version and use only the new? How can I put the icon of last version into launchpad?
    Thank you!

This was by design. You get to keep the old version incase you don't like the newer one or have some projects that your are working on or features that you need that are not working in the newer version. I'd keep the old version until you've really gone through the new one and decide it for you. It still has a lot of bugs and some features are missing.

  • When upgrading an OS is it possible to retain an earlier version of iMovie?

my husband, a man who hates change, is still using OS10.6 on his iMac and loves iMovie6 .. recently he realized that in order to use a third party app for his video editing he will finally have to upgrade to OS10.8 .. will he be able to keep iMovie6 as well as the newer version of iMovie after he upgrades?   Thank you in advance for your help and for not laughing at him

Mac OS X upgrades don't remove anything, but you have to make a backup of your files before upgrading. Use Time Machine or Disk Utility's Restore feature.
iMovie 6 is compatible with Mountain Lion, so it will work after upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion. Check that your applications are supported > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • Have 2 versions of iMovie on Mac

Considering buying iLife 08 for iWeb function. Is it possible to keep and use my old iMovie 06 on the same computer?

Is there anything special I need to do during installation of iLife (ie Custom Install) to make this happen.
If you install iLife '08 over a previous version, then the previous version of iMovie is automatically placed in a separate "iMovie (previous version)" folder. However, if you already have iLife '08 installed and need to re-install a previous version of iMovie, then use the download iMovie HD version 6.0.4 which is configured not to delete iMovie '08. Re-installing from older versions of an iLife DVD will automatically delete the new applications.

  • Only CERTAIN videos will not import in BOTH versions of iMovie

Heya, I'm dying here, hoping someone can help:
I've been filming video with my camera, but for some reason, one out of every 6 or 7 times a file will absolutely not import into iMovie.
They play absolutely fine with audio and everything in Quicktime, but when I try to import to iMovie '08, they simply do not show up as thumbnails even though it goes through the whole "creating thumbnails" process.
When I try importing them into iMovie HD 6, I get a "file cannot be imported: unknown error" message.
Everything else I film with my camera and import into either version of iMovie works just fine! It's only certain ones... but it always happens to be the most important clips!
There's GOT to be some way to fix this, right?

Everything was filmed with the exact same settings.
Your argument here is "inductive" and does not confirm that all stored files are in fact in the same compression format and settings. You need to apply a "deductive" approach. As I implied and QT Kirk specifically stated, you need to actually examine the files to determine their internal specifications -- comparing the working with non-working files to look for differences.
I've tried Streamclip, but when I try to save it as an avi, mpeg, dv, or even a renamed mov file, it says "Error: Could not prepare clip"
If your are trying to use the "Save As..." option here, you are not, in fact, performing a "conversion" but rather merely attempting to place the same content in a different file container. MPEG Streamclip does not, for instance, have the ability to export non-MPEG2 content to MPEG (MPEG-2 'muxed" or elementary streams) which would be incompatible with iMovie '08 in any event. As to AVI, you mush have one of the required AVI QT components installed and the compression formats you are trying to place in the AVI container must be compatible with the AVI container which is itself compatible with iMovie '08 as long as its contents are already edit compatible. As to DV, this one one usually difficult to mess up unless you were trying to turn it into a transport stream.
today I tried taking the original quicktime MOV file from the camera (the one that plays just fine in quicktime AND streamclip, just won't convert or import)
This statement seems to imply that something is wrong with your attempted work flow. If the file opens and plays in the QT Player and MPEG Streamclip, then it should be convertible. Once again, the primary problem is determining how to best perform this conversion which is why Karsten, QT Kirk, and I need specific information regarding the actual compression format, whether or not the compression settings were compatible with the QT structure, and whether or not an extraneous track (e.g., a "Tweener") might be causing difficulties. Posting a screen capture of the "Inspector" and/or "Properties" window or a sample file should provide the needed information.

  • Importing/editing project created in newer version of iMovie?

I am trying to import and edit an iMovie project that was created in a newer version of iMovie ('11), on my computer, which has iMovie '09 8.0.6. Is this possible?

    No.
    Geoff.

  • Where can I get an older version of iMovie?

I recently upgraded to Leopard and after the first attempt some of the programs didn't perform properly. Long story short, the Geniuses at the Mac store told me to do an archive install but I was unable to (not enough hard drive space) and had to do a clean install. I had backed up all of my documents and files but lost all of my programs. Not a big deal as most were old and needed to be upgraded anyway.
The problem: I bought iLife 08 from the Mac store and installed it. Everything installed properly except for iMovie. It wouldn't install because my video card isn't sufficient to run iMovie 08 (or something like that).
I don't remember what version was on previously, but it worked great with Tiger. I have a 15 month old and we are constantly making camcorder movies and I really need an operable version of iMovie.
Since I bought iLife 08 I don't feel like I should have to buy any more software. I should be able to get an older version under the 08 license, IMO.
Anyone have any suggestions as to how to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

  • How can I export a project on an external drive in the latest version of iMovie?

Before the latest release of iMovie I easily managed to export a project on an external usb drive and re-import such project on a different Mac... In the latest iMovie version, however, I cannot see my drive any more..
So, how can I export a project on an external drive in the latest version of iMovie?
    Thank you in advance

I'm not sure this is the best way, but you could create a new iMovie Library, move your project to that Library, then close the library. Then move the Library to your USB drive. Then, on the other Mac, in iMovie open the Library.
