Keeping a running "clone" of my macbook pro. Need advice.

Like most of you, when your business computer goes down, it is painful to get it fixed, deal with downtime and/or reload everything into a new computer. Personally, I prefer laptops and bought my first one back in 1997 (windows based pc, not mac). They all seemed to last about a year without problems and then six months of issues before I finally replaced it. I started with a Winbook (I don't think they are around anymore), to a couple of Gateways to Dell to Samsung or Sony. The story was always the same.
About a year ago I made the switch to a Macbook Pro and bought two of my salesmen MacBooks too. We love them. However recently they both experienced issues with their MacBooks and it spooked me. I have an Airport Time Capsule but I haven't set it up yet. That is a post/question for another day. I currently use Carbonite to back my Pro up but I know it will still take days to get fully operational again if something were to happen to my computer. So today, I bought another Macbook Pro very, very similar to the one I am using right now. I should have it in a week or two.
What I want to do is use the new one to just sit in the corner and clone the one I use on a daily basis. I basically want the one I am using to constantly update the data and changes to Carbonite while my new one (the clone) will constantly copy and download the changes to it.
Is this something that anyone else has ever done?
May of you will ask WHY? My answer is simple, a day of my time (and downtime) is worth more than a $2500 Macbook so if something happens to my laptop, I can deal with the repair of it later but could reach out, grab the clone and get right back to work.
Ideas? Comments? Advice?

A less expensive method is to connect a backup drive directly to your computer. Install a backup utility or use the OS X included utility, Time Machine, to backup the computer. Then if something happens to the laptop you can connect the backup drive to any other computer. Rather than $2,500.00 you would spend less than $200.00. Spend another $200 or less for a second backup drive in order to make a backup of your backup in case the backup drive fails. Make a third backup, less frequently, that you can put in a fireproof safe or off-site location in case of fire or other hazard.

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They should be more than willing to install a new logic board at no cost. I have no idea why this faulty GPU is making the headline here on the MacBook Pro forum so often now - could it be because Mountain Lion is just bringing the issue to a head more readily? I don't know - I only know that we're seeing more and more of these kernel panics of late.

Don't worry I've sorted it! I just had to turn off Reminders as well in iCloud. Calendar then worked fine, even when I turned Calendar and Reminders back on.

Clone SSD from Macbook Pro and Put it on Mac Pro??

I have Macbook Pro 13" Retina Display and Mac Pro 2008. Yosemite is running well in Macbook pro, but I can't install Yosemite in my Mac Pro. The idea is to clone SSD from Macbook Pro and Put it on Mac Pro. Is it possible?

Every time I try to install Yosemite, it quit unexpectedly. I downloaded it three times already, rebooted Mac Pro and did disk permissions, but always failed.

Why can't I connect to my brother MFC-J4510DW printer wirelessly? The printer is connected to the router and I can surf the web. I wonder if some security setting may be keeping it from connecting to my MacBook Pro.

I can surf the web. My wife can print from her PC wirelessly on it.
I wonder if some security setting may be keeping it from connecting to my MacBook Pro. I've installed the software, firmware and driver updates but
it still shows "off line"
with the printer power on. Any suggestions?

All I can suggest right now is back up first the try to reset the printing system, (all printers in the list will be removed).
Then connect directly to the printer via ethernet or to the Mac using USB and restart the efforts you have made up until now.
As for router settings, it's possible but not likely that your router only allows a small number of clients. It's also posible that you have MAC address filtering on, lastly are you using the correct wireless protocol, (802.11a/b/g WEP or WPA etc)?

How to run serato video on macbook pro

Trying to run Serato video on Macbook Pro. I have the newest MBP with discrete nvidia graphics card. I cannot figure out have to run dual display. I can run mirror display, but this is nto what I want. I want to run the video part on sceond tv monitor and the serato program on the mpb screen. Thanks guys .

You can but make sure you upgrade your RAM to 16GB - you can't do that through Apple...
Autodesk is a memory intensive program and the same goes with 3D Studio Max.....
Another suggeston if you must use a 13 inch is to buy the base 13 inch Macbook Pro and upgrade the RAM to 16GB and install a SSD to make it perform fast.
Another option is to get a refurbished 15 Inch Macbook Pro and do the RAM upgrade yourself...Advantage going 15 Inch is because it has it's own discrete graphics adapter rather than the built in Intel video.

I have installed Creative Cloud Desktop but it fails to load. The icon shows up in the bar at the top right but then it just disappears. I am running Yosemite on a MacBook Pro.

I downloaded and installed Creative Cloud Installer and installed the Creative Cloud desktop on my MacBook Pro running Yosemite. The Creative Cloud desktop tries to install when the system starts and the icon actually shows in the top bar briefly and then disappears shortly after it shows up so it is obviously failing to load. I have tried multiple times to no avail.

Vanb38462666 or Daniel do either of you have a Library/Input Managers folder? If so what do you have inside that folder?

Can I run snow leopard on macbook pro purchased new in 2009?

The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available at this time from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list. The App Store which is required to download 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion is part of the 10.6.6 update.
If you wait to long and they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already over $100 on Amazon.

Sorry it took me a while to come back. Anyway, I cleared out the old Xcode files and went into the Developers Download area and selected to download 4.6.3 and was presented with this window
I clicked on Savefile and it downloaded. I was intrigued as to why this would work as it was exactly what I had done before. Out of interest I decided to issue the download again and this time it created a zero byte disk image and a "part" file of 1.6mB. I shall just have to put that behind me (accepting that I don't understand why one download should work and all the precious attempts should fail) and move on.
Thank you for your help (it was my eyesight that caused me to think my OS version was 10.7.9 - it is indeed 10.7.5)

How well will Mountain Lion run on the following MacBook Pro?

Thinking about biting the bullet and upgrading to Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro. My specs are as follows:
MacBook Pro 15"
(Late 2008 model MacBookPro5,1)
Intel core 2 duo 2.53Ghz
8GB RAM
1TB HD with 390GB free
Mac OS X 10.6.8
So, how well will Mountain Lion run on this configuration? Currently I'm finding my computer annoyingly slow, so am wondering whether an upgrade was worth trying or not?
Any advice would be most appreciated!

Sorry, I should have been clearer - that's what I was thinking, which is why I was asking the question. I thought that if I was going to all the effort of a reformat etc that I should just upgrade to Mountain Lion while I was at it, but didn't want to do that if it was going to run really slowly anyway and then have to go through it all again to go back to Snow Leopard.

Go to system profiler and report back the amount of RAM that you have.
Make sure that you have at least 20% of your hard drive free.
Make sure you don't have a lot of items on your desktop as that can slow things down.
Quit applications that aren't responding or you aren't using and won't be using for a while.
~/Library/Caches Quit all applications and delete this folder. Do a regular delete then do a secure erase on all the items that won't delete.
If it only happens with a certain application (Safari for example)...
1. Quit the application (Safari)
2. Open ~/Library/Preferences and find the file for safari (com.apple.Safari.plist).
3. Put the file in the trash. Do NOT empty the trash yet. Open the application and make sure everything's ok. Now you can delete the file. In Mail if you trash the file, you will get rid or your setup.
Make sure that your dashboard doesn't have too many widgets and use Activity Monitor to see what it's using.
There are ways to disable if you want to.
Make sure that all of your software is up to date.
Repair permissions (it can't hurt)
Don't have a lot of login items.
Your internet browser shouldn't have a lot of extensions.
