Keeping A Watermark in iDVD?

Hi All,
I'm having an odd problem that I hope someone can help out with.  I'm in the process of creating DVD screener copies of a film I made, and as per the advice of our lawyers, we have 'watermarked' the file before we send it out to distributors and festivals.  I made the watermark in Quicktime Pro 7, by which I mean, I imported the film into Quicktime 7, added a basic text file of our watermark ("This film is the property of... not to be reproduced... etc.).
When I watch the film in Quicktime, it appears exactly as it should, but when I bring it into iDVD and render a DVD, the watermark is gone.
Any ideas how I can keep the watermark visible after rendering in iDVD?  Alternatively, can anyone suggest a better way to do this?
Best,
Joel

  • Why has the ability to remove the Apple logo watermark from iDVD 7, been disabled from the preferences menu?

Not only did I have to buy iLife '11 just to get a copy of iDVD, I then find I am unable to remove the Apple logo watermark using the preferences menu. Why are Apple being so petty? This sort of controlling behaviour will only alienate loyal Apple custermers. Apple's still flavour of the month at the moment but...

Don't be so quick to blame Apple.  The logo can still be removed. I'm still able to remove it in the iDVD/General preference pane. Try this basic troubleshooting fix :
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
    User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
    User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.
3 - launch IDVD and try again.

  • How do I keep watermarks and presets ( with their order ) synched between computers

I have a desktop which I use for heavy picture editing and a mac book air that I use for on the fly picture editing to show clients during photo trips.
I want to figure out a way for keeping my watermarks and presets ( with their order and folders I created on my desktop ) synched on my laptop.
What is the best way of doing this? If keeping it synched is not possible, how do you advise importing them to my laptop?
    Thanks for the support,

Ps: It is very important that the presets come on the same order and folders I re-arranged them in my desktop.

  • IDVD 2 / OSX 10.4.5 - Now my MAC won't burn via iDVD

I finally finished editing my project in iMovie (2.1.1) and exported it out to iDVD option. I then went into my iDVD (2.1) and set up my project. While adding a theme and a couple of buttons (one for slideshow, one to play the movie), iDVD started to abort abnormally and shut down. I had to restart and try it 3 or 4 times. When I did get it done, I put in a DVD-R and clicked the burn button. After about 3-4 minutes of waiting, it finally gave up with the burn and ejected the DVD and said it needs a disc.
I tried it with two different DVD discs (Sony & Verbatim). Both aborted out. It has worked fine in the past with iDVD 2.1 and OSX 10.1.5. I purchased Tiger (OSX 10.4) and gone through the online auto-updates to the latest OSX version (10.4.6). I also tried to keep up with the iDVD & iMOVIE updates as well but appears it didn't because I'm still on version 2.1 or 2.1.1. I also cannot not update these versions without another purchase. Is Apple starting to act like `Windows`?!
I was furious last night trying to get this work to no avail. I'll purchase the upgrade to iMovie & iDVD if I need to but want to be sure ALL will work right. I'm a little leary since I've read other forums with iDVD 5 & 6 having problems.
Anyone heard of such an issue? Any ideas or resolutions? Thanks all in advance...

I guess I'm not too surprised you are having trouble with iDVD 2 under Tiger.
Tiger includes QuickTime 7.x which is quite different from the QT 6.5x iDVD 2 was designed for. 'Bite the bullet' and install the iLife '06 applications which are designed for QT 7.

  • IDVD exporting low resolution

I made 5 slideshows on iMovie and exported them HD quality, and they look great on my iMac.
I put them on a basic iDVD menu and burnt them onto a DVD (burnt 3 seperate disks as best performance, high quality AND professional quality) and the entire thing looks pixely and unprofessional.
It's not only my slideshows, the menu is blurry also! How do I fix this? These are for a wedding client and I would hate to have to give them this low quality DVD.
    Suggestions?
    Thank You!

    Hi
There are many things to this.
    • Your Mac is capable to show much higher quality than what anyone with any program can put on a playable DVD - AS DVD is a standard limited to SD-Video - There are no HD DVD at all (only a short time in history and to be played on a few very rare Toshiba HD-DVD players)
    • Then when understanding what's possibly with DVD - One can get better or worse of this too.
To get an as bad result possibly (who wouldn't like this) one Use - iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 as they only deliver every second line over to iDVD (called interlaced video - as what's on a DVD) and to make this even more worse one selects to do this Export by using "Share to iDVD" within iMovie - as iMovie now will render it and does this SO BAD.
To get an as good result possibly with DVD I do
    • Use a video-editor that Export 100% of the interlaced material to iDVD as iMovie up to HD6 or any version of FinalCut (or FotoMagco™ - for SlideShows)
    • I DO - Share to Media Browser and as Large (not HD) - If I have to use iMovie 08 to 11 - as this give a better resul. In iMovie up to HD6 I just import the movie project from within iDVD - now iDVD will render and so much better.
    • I use High quality DVDs - only Verbatim (Never ever Memorex or alike)
    • I use DVD-R
    • I set down burn speed in iDVD/Preferences/Advance to x4 - as these DVDs plays so much better on many more devices.
    • I secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up Hard disk - No other hard disk can be addressed to keep this space for iDVD and Mac OS temp.files
If You need better than SD-DVD quality then You need to look into
    • Blu-Ray (Roxio Toast™ 11 Pro incl BD-component, BD-burner, BD-disks AND Blu-Ray Player)
    • Save the pictures as they are eg .jpg in a folder and on a DVD and play them via a PC/Mac and a SlideShow program as iPhoto, PowerPoint etc.
    Good Luck !

  • "iDVD unexpectedly quit" while in step 3

Well, first I believe it quits in step 3 because I have never seen it say step 4 but I come and go as it is burning.
The project is big-17 GB/66Minutes& therefore I am trying to burn on "best quality." I have been reading the posts for 2 weeks trying to find the problem-saw that I need over 20GB so I had 25GB Freed up before trying again with same result-"..Quit" Tried restarting comp & idvd with nothing else running. tried Macsweeper. I Pray it is not a problem in the slideshow-Running iDVD4.0.1 & Panther on my G4.

    Hi Dillon
    Virus - Very un-likely.
A confused hard disk - most likely: There are maintenance to do to all computers
    Widows as Macs.
    a. If You let Your Mac run from 00:00:00 to about 2 am there is an automated
sequence that runs and does some tidying up.
    b. Other things to do:
    - Repair Permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)
    - Repair Hard disk (Apple Disk Util tool) - You need to start from CD/DVD or
    one external hard disk
    - Eventually: Start a new account - log into this and re-try.
The "Repair Permissions" is suggested by many of us in this forum to be run
    - before a new instalment of programs AND
    - after the instal.
    c. Another thought: How much free space is there on Your hard disk.
    - Mac OS needs about 10Gb just to keep everything open
    - eg. iDVD needs about 15Gb more to do it's job
    - the material to be processed eg. a movie file that iDVD should convert to
    mpeg2 and a DVD-disk needs storage eg about 13Gb/hour
So You see it is really easy to get into "Low free space" - troubles.
If about 5Gb or less free - You would certainly get into strange problems.
Please - keep us updated on progress.

  • TIP for watermarking in 1.5.1

I know that many people have complained about the new watermarking "feature" in Aperture 1.5.1, but I haven't seen any tips on how to avoid Aperture ruining your watermarks on all the exported versions.
The trouble (for those who may not yet know) is that Aperture places your watermark on the image before it resizes for export, so if you have carefully created a pixel-accurate watermark it is suddenly one pixel tall on the exported image. Prior to 1.5.1 it didn't do this - it added the watermark after the resize.
Now you have to make your watermark image many thousands of pixels wide (or tall) to compensate for the resize. (I haven't tried it, but I assume that using a .pdf or .eps file wouldn't require that you make a huge watermark as these aren't raster images and would automatically adjust to waterever dimensions your image may be.)
Now the problem is that if you save the watermark image as just slightly larger than the watermark itself, you end up with a mark that drastically changes depending on the size and/or orientation of your image. In other words, your watermark might be 3000 pixels wide and 50 pixels tall when you export a horizontal image, but the same mark might be 2000 pix wide and only 36 pix tall when you export a vertical image.
I don't know about you, but I hate when things don't look like I want them to look.
So, I've now saved my watermark image in a square format that is self-limiting when applied to horizontal or vertical images. If I export a horizontal image, the watermark is limited in size when its top edge "bumps" against the top of the exported image. This keeps the watermark from extending all the way across the horizontal dimensions of the image. The opposite is true for vertical images - the watermark is limited by the horizontal dimensions of the image and thus will be resized as appropriate by the application.
Of course, my watermark file is almost 2MB (4000px x 4000px) and that's still ridiculous, but it works well and until Apple reverts the watermark process to 1.5 or gives us the option of using whichever method we prefer, this is going to be my suggestion to those who may not have thought of a way around the new "feature."
Has anyone else thought of a better way?
    PM G5 single 1.8GHz, Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   3GB RAM, 500GB RAID

I'm with you on this Philip.
I just noticed tonight that all my latest files have variable sizes of watermarks for the same photoshoot. This looks plain wrong.
The reason why this is happening is because some photos in a shoot are cropped while others are not. The cropped photos become smaller original files than the uncropped photos. Since the watermark is added to the original file, cropped photos get a larger watermark.
Apple apparently was trying to help by adding this "feature" but they ruined the workflow of a lot of photogs out there.
Aperture team: Please revert this to the way it worked in 1.5.

  • LR5 Watermarks presets saved but linked png signature file lost...

    hello,
I work recording the lightroom settings/presets in library folder rather than in the os user settings.
I switched from PC (7) to Mac (Mavericks) and I could open my catalogs on mac keeping the majority of my settings and preferences. Except for watermarks: I had 5 watermarks presets with png signature file, they are still listed as watermarks presets, the settings are retained but the graphics signature file in PNG watermarks disappeared. Some of the png were outside watermark's presets folder, some were inside, result is the same, all disappeared.
I think I can not recover them and will have to do them again, that's not a so big problem, but to avoid this in the future, what do you advise me to keep the watermark PNG files stored with the settings info?
    Thank you!

    Thanks for the idea Rikk,
I tried to save a new watermark preset, i have my .lrtemplate new file in "Watermarks" preset folder, but linked png is still not copied in the catalog presets folder, and nothing new appears in the folder you indicate, on mine i just have "Library>Application Support>Adobe>Lightroom", but no "Watermark Sources"
So i also tried to create this "Watermark Sources" folder and copy my pngs files inside, reload lightroom, open an old catalog where i had watermark presets; the pngs still not appear.
I have to leave but still open to any other ideas : )
    Thanks

  • When I watermark images it is a different size in different images

Is there a way that when an image is cropped to keep the watermark a uniform size?

    Here's what I do.
    Short version:
    - While the Presets can scale the watermark, you will get better results if you create individual watermarks (files with transparency) for each size you often use, and turn off scaling.  I recommend 800, 1200, and 2000 px.  When you create the Preset, select the watermark that is closest in size to the dimension of the file being created.  (Put the watermark size in the file name, e.g. "My Professional Watermark 2013 1200wide.tif".  Put all your watermark files in one Finder folder.)
Note that Aperture is a conduit for producing published pictures, and that there are few good reasons to save your published picture files (the genius of Aperture is that the data needed to create shareable image-format files from you digital camera files is usually less than half as much as the file itself).  I add watermarks when I export.  I do not re-import files created by "exporting".  (The quotes are because exporting a Version from Aperture is not, literally, an export.  "Export" means "make me an image-format file using these specs".  That file does not exist until you make it by "exporting".)

  • Want the best quality imovie/idvd project

    Hi all
Just imported a video from my Sony digital8 cam using imovie. I'm having a little troubele deciding from idvd or imovie, which is the right direction? Can someone share a good home video back up system? I'm trying to import my home videos from my Sony digital8 camcorder

+I'm having a little troubele deciding from idvd or imovie, which is the right direction?+
It depends on what you want as an end result.
iMovie is an editing program so that you can crop your movies, add titles, effects, transitions, add still photos and audio files.
iDVD is an authoring program so that you can create a burned DVD disk of your videos, photos, etc. You create your movies in iMovie and then drop the finished movie into an iDVD project to burn it to a DVD disk so that you/others can view it on a TV from a set-top DVD player. iDVD has to compress data when it is burned, so you don't want to be burning DVDs to preserve your home videos if you want to edit them later in iMovie.
If you just want to burn them to back them up and you don't want/need to do any editing, you might want to look into just using a stand-alone DVD recorder. You could connect your dig8 camcorder and record to DVD disk directly.
You can also use iDVD to create slideshows and burn them.
You should go to Apple's support site for iLife and watch the tutorial videos for both iDVD and iMovie 6:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#idvd
    http://www.apple.com/support/ilife/tutorials/idvd/index.html
    http://www.apple.com/support/ilife/tutorials/imovie/
+Can someone share a good home video back up system?+
Again, it depends on what end result you want. Some people think that they want to import all their video footage into iMovies, and save all of it on their computers. However, that requires HUGE amounts of drive space. Each of my iMovies runs from 25-60 GB. It is better to import the footage for each movie at a time, as you work on your iMovie.
A large external drive just for doing movies is a great idea. Get as large a drive as you can afford! Be sure to format it for macs first before importing anything. Keep the iMovie and iDVD apps on your main drive.
    I. Save your original raw digital 8 tapes. Data is already in digital format. Be sure to keep your camcorder so you can reimport if you want. If you really want a back up for these original tapes, you can connect your dig 8 camcorder to a miniDV camcorder and record to miniDV tapes. I did this for my VHS tapes as they were getting too old and I was concerned about further degradation. I like having a digital format of my original video VHS and Hi 8 tapes. This may not be necessary for you since all your tapes are already digital.
    2. Import videos into iMovie, doing just one movie at a time to save drive space, edit, then export the movie to miniDV tapes with a miniDV camcorder. This process gives you tape(s) of your EDITED iMovie. I use these tapes as a backup for my iMovies, since I delete my iMovies after exporting them and after I have burned my DVD of that movie. (See next).
    3. Create iDVD projects from edited iMovies, do 'save as disk image' for each one so that you have an image file of all your projects. Since disk images are self-contained, you can safely delete the original iMovie and iDVD projects without losing the ability to burn DVDs in the future. It also saves drive space. Use the disk image file for the actual burning of the DVD disk, using Disk Utility.
Now you have a set of raw original tapes, a set of edited mini DV tapes, a burned DVD and the disk image file of each project. You should copy all the disk images to another external drive as a backup.
I don't worry about backing up the DV tapes, as I can always reimport them. The tapes are small and store easily. It is recommended for longer life of the tapes that you get them out once a year and rewind them, but I have not been doing that.
Yes, you can take one of your burned DVD disks and create a disk image from it, and use it to burn more disks, but that means that your future burns depend on that disk staying in good shape until you want it. DVD disks can crack, break, melt, etc depending on who uses them. I prefer to know that my disk images are saved and backed up for when I need them.

  • Quicktime to iDVD - iDVD quits when making disk image

You folks helped me a hugely with the arduous process of producing a nice 45 minute iMovie->iDVD movie last year from my digi camera, which actually works (http://www.galfromdownunder.com/peru). Thank you! Last year I was flummoxed by misplaced chapter markers. It's not the case this time.
I am doing another one of a similar size, and am at the stage of trying to burn a disk image, but it keeps falling over with 'iDVD unexpectedly quits' after about an hour and half. This time I saved the little log that pops up with 'send to Apple' (does anyone actually read it if you do?) and have posted it here:
    http://www.galfromdownunder.com/ftp/iDVD-crash-report-may2106.txt
I would really be so grateful if an extreme geek would mind taking a look before I try to reverse engineer this whole process further. The log always seems to stop at a place that says:
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000
The difference between this project and last year's is as follows:
    1) In an attempt to save time and space, I bypassed iMovie, and concatenated the QT7 clips and moved the resulting final movie directly into iDVD.
    2) Yes, I did see that the Chapter Markers I painstakingly inserted (using that arduous text file process described in QT Help, mindful of not putting one within 2 secs of beginning, end, etc etc) into the movie are not picked up by iDVD. Groan. Still, the disk image burn quit. Then I tried again with the second concatenated QT movie without chapter markers, but it still quit with the above report.
    3) I moved individual files to iDVD fudge a separate 'scenes' menu. I know it means there is redundancy in the data now, but there is 4 Gb to play with, so why not....
    4) The total capacity comes to 4.3 Gb according to the Status section in iDVD. When I clicked on the DVD Capacity button it said the total was 62 minutes. I thought it was under ... hmmm... had it set to Best Performance.
    5) I have about 11.47 Gb free on my laptop. I even tried making the disk image to a 20 gb Lacie external Firewire drive but it still quit.
    6) Is there any difference between moving a reference movie to iDVD vs a self-contained? Does the s/w resolve them for you at the end of the day?
Really appreciate help - I realize could/should get iLife06 and a bigger machine etc etc but since I managed to do it last year, why spend more money unless there is an insurmountable tech reason to do so.
    Thanking you,

My. You sound like an advanced user, but that sounds like a very advanced crash....
You know, I'm not one of the great experts, and I'm here to try to learn why iDVD won't start with a "Missing (iDVD) Image" in the crash log, but I've also had very little success with QT editing. Assembling clips frequently produces a video that is corrupted between clips, and a save doesn't really produce a truly complete file from a series of clips. Usually, the file plays up to a broken video, and the video then freezes, while sound continues. Yet picking on the video at the cursor will restart the video, so it's in there, just broken. Common occurance, this. This can be validated when that malformed file is imported into MPEG Streamclip (free app, and a good one), with the import only loading the clips up to the malfunctioning clip. I'm guessing that iDVD is running up against a malformed section in your QT file, causing a crash against a incorrect behavior in how the code accesses memory.
    What would I do?
Since there doesn't seem to be any "self-healing" ability in QT, and since you already have a QT file with times and bookmark names, you might be happier if you went ahead with iMovie, and used the QT file for a ready reference to recreate the video in iMovie. I've done this in remakiing a DVD from another DVD I've created. The recreation process only takes maybe 1/2 hour compared to the much longer first effort. Copying is easy.
I use Final Cut express myself, and like its quality, and use an external drive for movie making, so you can live with the 11gigs you have onboard using your Lacie. Given the sad behavior of iDVD on my G5 recently, not starting and all, I'm thinking that maybe another 3rd party product, like the highly recommended "Toast" may help me elude what I'm beginning to recognize as substandard Apple apps. Apple has annoyed me endlessly with my need to "convert" the standard 'mpeg' to use in Apple products, like Final Cut (even after the $10US upgrade to play mpeg). Perhaps that would be a long term positive for you too.
Like your current experience, I'm at the "had my fill" point with pure Apple apps. Too much dancing with them trying to get common communication to work and too little visibility into why malfunctions are occurring.
In any case, good luck on this fix. Hope someone can get you rolling.

  • Watermarking a movie / Burning to DVD

I'm trying to put a watermark (individual's name) on a film in imovie and then make a playable dvd of it.  But when I create in imovie, then export to idvd and burn it from there, it turns out looking terrible (soft and distorted picture).  Any tips on better steps I can take to get the true picture quality?  Is it possible to do title watermarks in idvd?  Thanks!

Sadly, breaking the encryption on a commercial DVD, a necessary first step in copying it, is illegal in the U.S. Because it's illegal, the terms of use of these forums prohibit us from discussing software or methods. Sorry.

  • No video when playing disc burned from iDVD on DVD player

I've tried for the first time to burn a DVD (TV shows purchased on iTunes) and followed the directions from the iDVD help guide, but when I try to play on my external DVD player there's no video, only audio. I saw a couple posts where people had video and no audio, but not the opposite. How do I resolve? I'm using Memorex DVD-R discs and am not very technologically savvy.

    Hi fitzmonster
Welcome to apple discussions. Just to add to the already good advice mentioned above. I do have a question. By any chance are you using Memorex Dvd's? If so, it simply adds one more variable to an already bad equation. Try Verbatim or Maxell instead.
Given the lack of recent updates to iDvd, seems to me Apple is currently focused on streaming content from your Mac to your TV thru such products as iTunes and their latest AppleTV. iDvd doesn’t always fit into this mix. In comparison, iDvd is dated / old technology centered entirely on standard definition TV. Their latest AppleTV is well beyond this.
Also there are many products out there that work rather well together and may be better matched on your mac other than iTunes, AppleTV and iDvd. One must keep in mind that iDvd is not really intended as a general purpose burn utility. Toast may be a better choice here but neither iDvd nor Toast will circumvent DRM.
So the question we need to ask is, How well do all three apple apps / products mentioned above play together? Are they in harmony? IMHO the answer is no .... mainly because iDvd is rather dated technology. Hence, as a consumer I do think it's smart to look elsewhere / at other products /options if the intention is to burn TV Programs to Dvd-R ... as opposed to streaming content from a mac to your TV or iPod.
Like I said, Roxio Toast is a reasonable choice but Elgato combined with EyeTV3 software is even better one. It's better because it’s written and built around recording TV shows / programs. That and it's not limited to iTunes.
