Keeping Active Window in Application top when Command-Tabbing

Let's say I'm working on several documents in Word while using a page from Firefox as a reference point. I'll type something in Word in one document (let's call it document A), Command-Tab to Firefox, look something up, then Command-Tab back to Word, expecting document A (the active window when switching away from Word) to pop up back in front of me. Instead, when I command-tab back to Word, another random window in the app is active, forcing me to Command-` until I cycle back to Document A.
This has become very annoying and time consuming; can someone please tell me if there's some kind of setting I need to flip on to make sure that the active window in one application will still be on "top" when I Command-Tab back to it?
Please don't suggest Witch unless it's the absolute only way to solve this. I gave it a try, and its reliability was very wishy-washy. Sometimes apps would show up, sometimes they'd completely disappear for no reason. I'd prefer to use something reliable.

Is this only happening in word? I've been using the tab function and don't have a problem, which suggests that it may be a setting in word.

Disable the "select by mouse" feature when Command-Tabbing

Hello,
Is there a way to keep the mouse cursor from derailing your intentions when hitting the command-tab combo to switch between applications? When the mouse happens to be near the middle of the screen, my command-tab ends up going to some random app because it happened to be on the list where the mouse cursor was at that moment. I drives me crazy when I'm in a hurry.
Is there a way to disable that functionality?
Getting into the habit of moving my mouse out of the way first is a very distant second (and just a work around) to the preferred solution.

Also try deleting the mouse .plist in your user library.
You need to look in your user Library/Preferences for the .plist. Hold down the option key while using the Finder "Go To Folder" command. Enter ~/Library/Preferences. Delete the .plist(s) for the mouse (there might be more than one).
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.

You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.2. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.
Log out/in or restart and test.

Can I change the order of applications in the command-tab switcher?

I recently replaced my old computer running 10.5 with one running 10.8. It's a small thing, but irritating: in 10.5, when I hid an application, it would be bumped to the back of the switcher list, but in 10.8, the list is purely chronological in order. For example, if I hide Chrome now, a single command-tab would bring me back to it, rather than to the most recent non-hidden application, which is what I'd prefer. Again, I realize it's a small thing, so if there's nothing I can do about it, oh well, but I figured I would check.

Sorry there is no way to accomplish this.
The heads-up screen has no modifiable behavior other than it basic default for quick switching between apps.

Spaces confusing safari windows (on multiple spaces using command-tab)

Wondering if this is happening to anyone else.
I love spaces but something is messed when using safari windows on multiple spaces. Say I have two safari windows open on two different spaces, after command-tabbing to another app when I try to command-tab back to safari it doesn't always go to my last safari window. That is to say that sometimes it goes to the other safari window, and sometimes it doesn't. It's super unpredictable.
Give it a try, open two safari windows on two different spaces and the command tab to another app and then command tab back to safari - and repeat... you'll find that it will just randomly go to the other window, and then back etc.
Can't think of anything more annoying in spaces... that's got to be a bug.

same issue. i have multiple safari windows with multiple tabs on multiple spaces. let's say one space is a rails space; so it has some terminals, safaris, firefoxes, all perhaps with 2 or more tabs. command-tab does not necessarily go back to the window of the app i was just in. whether it's safari or firefox or whatever. this is horribly un-intuitive. come on apple. that's like your thing, right?

Mac OS X 10.5 Finder issues - Application switching via Command-Tab

I have been having problems recently, when I would switch apps using command-tab, some applications don't show up. I haven't noticed this before, while using the integrated graphics card, but have noticed it since using the discreet card, related?

I'm on a dual 2.7 G5 and I'm having this same issue - so I don't think it's the graphics card... not sure. Anyone have solutions? Or the same issue?

Switching application shortcut problem (COMMAND+TAB) and (COMMAND+`)

Hello everyone
Since the upgrade Leopard i had a problem with the switching apps shortcut.
Once you start the switching apps forward shortcut (COMMAND + TAB), the switching apps Backward shortcut (COMMAND + `) won't work anymore. The only thing that make it works it to use (COMMAND + SHIFT + TAB) which is not good. It gives me cramp in my left hand! HA!
Anyways I check out petty much everywhere in the settings where I could find a customize shortcut for that. But I didn't find it. I also check if is was not an other application who was taking the same shortcut and it is not the case.
Can somebody help me on that one.
I know it is not a big deal but... still.

Some applications allow you to set hotkeys (Quicksilver, a 3rd party app, is the example I used -- this is not included with OSX). I was thinking that perhaps some other application you have was using the hotkey cmd-tab and stealing it from the finder.
You can also change the 'meta' keys in the system 'Keyboard and Mouse' prefereneces (click on keyboard -> modifier keys) -- this maybe is confusing things if its not set to defaults.
There's also a 'keyboard shortcuts' tab under keyboard and mouse, look under there e and see if there's anything involving tab (by default there shouldn't be).

Tabs on Top - When a tab reloads whole page jumps

I am trying to get used to the new tabs on top. My webmail is open all the time and reloads every 30 seconds to check for new mail. Every time it does this, the whole web page jumps down and jumps back up slightly no matter what tab I am working on.
During reload the tab becomes deeper slightly and this causes the web page I am on to move down by the same distance then go back up again once reload is complete. This is very annoying when I am reading the page or in the process of ticking a box or dotting an option as it means I miss it because it's moved.
This does not happen with tabs on bottom. If this can't be fixed I'll have no choice but to move tabs back to what they were before FF4.
Does anyone else have this? Is it fixable?

Use Firefox Button instead of Menu Bar.
Go to View Menu>Toolbars>Uncheck Menu Bar option.
You will see orange firefox button on top left with tabs moving upwards.

How do i keep the window visible on top

I'm watching videos and want them to stay 'on top' of all other windows as I switch between applications...like word to explorer to safari to google...I want to keep my video playing visible on 'top' of all other windows.

Firefox itself does not have native features for this. However, you can download and install the PowerMenu application for Windows at [http://www.abstractpath.com/powermenu/]. It installs very quickly.
When you want to watch your video, put it into its own Firefox window (you can do this by right-clicking the video tab and selecting "Move to new window". In this new window, right-click any one of the three Windows buttons at the top right corner (Minimize, Resize, Close). Click "Always On Top" from the menu. This window will now remain on top of all other windows until you uncheck "Always On Top".

Activating Windows 7 & 8.1 when they are virtualized?

I'm looking at creating to VMs on an ESXi host in my home lab in order to reduce the amount of machines I have lying around. The only reason I am hesitant is because I need to buy individual windows licences which may require me to re-activate them if I
change the virtual hardware (add another disk, add more memory or another 2 cores etc).
Is this something that I need to worry about? Or will windows accept those hardware changes?

There are no issues in activation even when hardware is changed, RAM or processor etc

Keeping the scrollbar at the top when appending to a textArea

I have a JTextArea with a veritcal scroll bar on the right side. Everything works fine scrolling wise except for the position of the of the knob ( I believe that's what it's called) after the text area is appened to.
The knob automatically goes to the lowest position and I can't figure out how to keep it at the top.

To clarify further,
After ammending the text area I've inserted these lines
System.out.println(slider.getVerticalScrollBar().getMinimum());
System.out.println(slider.getVerticalScrollBar().getMinimum());
slider.getVerticalScrollBar().setValue(0);The print statements were just to check. They're both returning 0 though...I'm not entirely sure that means. The third line doesn't appear to have any effect

How can I keep a window always on top?

Im trying to have a windowed document always be on top of the main Photoshop window to use it as a guide/reference image and also for extracting colors from it. I know this is possible because I have seen it in a Youtube video.

Firefox userping the active window...

Running on iMac, OS 10.7.2
When FFox is on any of several social networking sites, if someone sends me a message, FFox becomes the active window causing many problems when multitasking with other applications.
i.e. I can be working in MS Word and suddenly FFox take control of the active window and jerks me out of MS Word and into FFox.. It does this with other applications as well, like Safari, iChat, Yahoo IM, and the list goes on...
I'm just about at my wits end trying to figure out what SETTING or what ever that I can not find to stop this behavior...

If you have tabs on top and no menu then the tabs are in a "Windows" area so there is no space to right. If you put tabs back to the bottom you will have most of your old behavior but because of the changes to tabs on top most of the tab context menu stuff all of the context menu part was lost except the customize toolbar stuff, double-clicking on an empty spot was restored, and eventually during the FF 4 beta most of the tab extensions Firefox messed up eventually worked again except in the area to the right of the tabs.
The Windows part of that double-click has to maximize or restore to normal,
and you have to be able to drag the window by it;'s title bar.

Fix focus / active window from panel to image document ?

Question with a Photoshop html5 panel.
After I run an action in my new panel, the priority is still with the html5 panel, and not the active image document open.
Lets say I click on the button on the panel that does an action, then I want to save so I hit command-s on the keyboard, well it won't save because command-s isn't an option because the panel is the active window. Is there a command I can insert into the photoshop.jsx function that will return the active window to the image document. I hope that makes sense. Here is a code snippet:

It is most closely resembling [Command+H]. but the window still appears, with all other open windows appearing in front of it.
It seemed to be intermitent for me. I closed all apps, and restarted, un-selecting "Re-open windows when logging back in."
For the moment it appears to be stable again, and this has happened before, so will keep you posted. Is there a dump or some other function I should do next time it is happening?
