Keeping and Viewing Old Sent Mail "On My Mac"?

This is a relatively minor question, but it would be useful to have answered. Actually, there are sort of two questions here.
I get my email via IMAP Exchange, and the server deletes all messages (both Inbox and Sent) after one year. Since I frequently check mail from other computers, I want to keep using IMAP so that it is still on the server; however, I also like to keep old mail archived, because sometimes I do need to refer to it.
The somewhat inelegant solution I had found is to occasionally transfer in bulk messages from the "Inbox" and "Sent" folders on the Exchange Account to an "Inbox Archived" and "Sent Archived" folder that are local on my Mac. Now I finally realized that if I could create a rule that would Move all Incoming mail older than 330 days to the "Inbox Archived" folder, but is there any way to do that with the sent?
The second question is, is there any way to configure the "Sent Archived" folder so that it looks like a "Sent" folder? The "Sent" folder is the only one that is configured to show "To" instead of "From"; is there no way to create another folder on my Mac that does this? Of course you can manually have Mail show "To" instead of "From," but then it applies this behavior to all Mailboxes.
Is there maybe a plug-in that allows you to apply Viewing options to one specific Mailbox?

You are welcome. Sledge hammer approach.
Do a backup.
Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • How to export old sent mail in my macbook and import it in my Mac?

I want to export my old sent mail in my macbook and import it in my new Mac?

There is a bug when doing “export mailbox” and import mailbox functionality.
    Workaround:
      > Open Finder and under the “Go” menu, hold down the option key.  The “Library” sub-menu will show up.
      > Copy the entire “Library > Mail” folder to a USB disk (it will not work if copying to a shared drive for some reason)
      > Take the USB disk to the new computer and do an “Import Mailbox” and select the copied Data file.  There will be LOTS of folders that come up for import, you can browse through and deselect what you don’t need (e.g. trash or junk mail), OR just import everything and then clean up from your mailbox.
      > The imported folders will show up in mail under the “On My Mac” area.

If you back up your mac before deleting your emails, Time Machine should back up your e-mails.
I never tried this so i'm not sure to find them in Time Machine. To browse in your backups simply click the Time Machine icon in your dock. In the right bar, you can select an backup. Than you can browse in finder, in your backkup.

  • When exporting and then importing Apple Mail from one mac to another I get "Some messages could not be imported. Partially imported mailbox will be labeled IMPORT" . That mailbox does not appear.

When exporting and then importing Apple Mail from one mac to another I get "Some messages could not be imported. Partially imported mailbox will be labeled IMPORT" . That mailbox does not appear.
    Any help would be welcome

This is a bug in Mail. The mailbox archiving function does not include attachments, which  gives the error with the import. To workaround this you can create a mailbox in Mail and copy to it all emails you want to export. Then go in Finder to [user]/Library/Mail/Mailboxes en select the created mailbox. Copy this to the public directory of your other mac. Then start Mail on that other mac and import the mailbox from the public directory. Should work now.

  • .Mac Mail sends old sent mail arbitrarily

For some reason when I look at my Sent mail folder it shows old mail sent today. In other words if I look at my send mail folder and all the mail Sent Date mail says Today there's 1 or 2 pieces of mail that also says Today but I orginally sent it in May. If you look at the header of the mail itself there is no sent date. I don't know if these are being resent or its just a bug in the app. and shows it in my mail folder.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    You’re welcome.
It does certainly matter how the messages were sent because AFAIK .Mac webmail doesn’t set the Date header on the copy of messages sent that way that it puts in Sent. Neither Mail nor any other mail client can reliably determine the sent date of a message if that header is missing...
Messages sent with Mail have an X-Mailer header that says so when received. That header isn’t present in the copy of the message that Mail puts in Sent, but it can probably still be determined whether a message was sent with Mail or with webmail by looking at the full headers of the message (which you can see doing View > Message > Long Headers).
That said, it isn’t clear what your problem really is with the information you’ve provided. It could also be that you’re experiencing some index corruption and Mail is indeed resending some messages on its own. If you suspect that’s the case, you may proceed as follows.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see any other “Envelope Index”-named file there, delete it as well.
    4. Move any “IMAP-”, “Mac-”, or “Exchange-” account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all the mail stored there to be lost.
    5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • ICal alerts keep using an old e-mail address

I recently changed my ISP, which changed my e-mail address. I have been sending reminder e-mails alerts to myself so the event will not be forgotten or overlooked.
I have deleted the old e-mail address from my address book and e-mail accounts and I have made sure that my current e-mail address is in my address book.
iCal will send the alert but it is still is using the old e-mail address, which comes back a undeliverable.
I am at a loss as to where to look or search to rid the system of the old address and also how to get iCal to use the correct address.
I have checked preferences, iCal Help to no avail.
Anyone have any suggestions or a solution.

Apps that are downloaded are always linked to the ID that was used.  If oyu want to use a new ID what you need to do is delete the app in question and download it again using your new ID

  • How do I move or archive large numbers of old Sent mail messages?

I've created folders for past years Sent mail and tried moving my messages out of my Sent folder (for several accounts). They seem to move, but then I get a very basic error (with no details..): "34 messages could not be moved to the mailbox "2009 Sent -- On My Mac" An error occured while moving messages to mailbox "2009 Sent -- On My Mac"
I also get a similar error if I try to archive them. Admittedly I got WAY behind on doing this (they're from 09, 10, and 11), but there must be a way. I've tried selecting only a few months worth instead of the entire year and I still get the error. Is it an issue because they're from my Sent folder? Do I need to set up a special mailbox to move them to?
My goal is to get my Inbox and Sent boxes trimmed down.

I don't know what was happening but yesterday I went back and did the Export/Archive function and it ended up doing just as I expected, exporting the mailbox as an mbox format =finally!!!  Not sure why it went haywire but all is fine now.

  • Why are my emails not showing up on iPhone5? Emails are on the servers and show up in Mail on both Macs.

I added VIP yesterday. Mail was syncing fine at first but now iPhone isn't displaying certain emails. If I search for them by selecting continue on server, they show up; however, once I close the search I can't see the emails in my inbox, VIP, Gmail, Yahoo, etc on my iPhone5. The emails are in the accounts if I login to the accounts on the web and they appear in Mail on my 2 MacBooks. Already did a restore from iCloud and same problem.

Nevermind. Somehow mail settings on iPhone was on or went back to show 50 recent. Increased to 100 and everything shows up again. Not sure why 'show 50 recent' displays older messages, i.e. email a month old vs. email from yesterday, but whatever it works fine now.

  • Very old 'Sent' mail missing from mailbox - help?

I've got a question about (really) old mail in my Sent mailbox. I went today to look for some very old messages (around 9/2001), and the earliest mail available to me is from Jan 1, 2003.
Does Mail archive or delete mail after it passes a certain age?
If so, how can I find my old mail?
    Jim

Jim, I had thought that if you select Never as time after which sent mesages are deleted that they would stay saved on your hard drive.

It is gone then, same as deleted. You don't have it still on your email server?

  • How do I a recover and view old deleted internet history. places.sqlite file only goes back a month and I want to go back a year.

Ok... 100% honesty instead of making some story up; my boyfriend had an affair; mostly online. When I caught wind of this he mass cleared the whole internet history. This was at the end of august.
I have found the places.sqlite file using the manager add-on. BUT the old history is not there. There is history there from the last month and it shows me pages that were individually deleted but none of the old history is there. I want to go as far back as March 2013 if I can. My bf knows I am doing this and said he would give me any password I may need to do so.
I feel like Iv been living a lie for months and I want some piece of mind.
I need to make a big decision right now and seeing this history will help me.
Pleas tell me there is a way too do this?!?!?! I'm hanging by a thread here.

You can try to use recuva, but is unlikely to work, due to the large size of the places.sqlite file.
    * http://www.piriform.com/recuva
    * The green button is the free download.
Though your boyfriend may had been using private browsing too.

  • How to determine the difference between a user sent mail and an auto-sent mail by another program?

    Hi,
I am currently capturing the item_send event in an Outlook (2010/13) addin which then processes the email before it sends.  Will this event fire for an email that is generated and sent automatically, i.e. without the user clicking the send button?  For
example there may be another addin installed that emails hourly logs somewhere, or gives the user an option click another button to send a generated email to their support team.
Ideally, I would like my addin code in the item_send event to only run when the user has purposely sent the email themselves from a draft email by clicking the send button.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

  • Keeping and using old hard drive

Recently my Power Mac Gigabit Ethernet G4 had its power supply die. Given the replacement cost and my limited tech-skills, I’m thinking this might be the time to upgrade a bit
For just a little more than the cost of a replacement power supply I could buy a “newer” and faster machine, maybe a Quicksilver or MDD, but that leads me to this question.
Can I transfer the 20 GB Ultra ATA drive from my old G4 to the new one, and then can I run the OS 10.2.8 and Classic OS that’s on that hard drive? Can I make it the master disk for the new machine? The newly refurbished machine comes with OS 10.5 installed which I’m not that interested in, and I'd gladly do without. Being able to boot in OS 9 isn’t important to me.

    Hi, Eugene -
...and then can I run the OS 10.2.8 and Classic OS that’s on that hard drive?
Probably not. Unless certain steps are taken at the time of installation, OS 9 installs are tailored to the model on which it is installed; such an installation will probably not have the OS elements peculiar to a different model.
In particular, late model QS machines and all OS 9-bootable MDD models can use only the model-specific version of OS 9.2.2 that shipped with them.
The preceding applies only to using OS 9 as a boot OS. Your previously installed OS 9 should work fine as Classic under OSX.
With regard to OSX, I believe its default installs are also specific to the machine it is originally installed on.
Can I make it the master disk for the new machine?
It is not necessary to do so. The designations of Master and Slave for drives is, for the most part, just for addressing, i.e. to give each drive a unique address so the OS can locate things. Any drive, Master or Slave, can be the boot drive (the drive containing the OS to which the Mac is booted is the boot drive, also referred to as the startup disk) - the designations Master and Slave do not confer any priority or preference.
An exception - when connecting the Mac to another via Firewire Target Disk Mode, only the drive jumpered as Master on the built-in IDE bus of the Target machine will be available on the Host machine's desktop.

  • Iphone  4 ios6 keeps reverting to old e-mail password!  :(

    Subject says it all!
I notice it after a few days when my outgoing mail starts piling up in the Outbox.
I go into settings, update the password, and it's good for a few days.
I ALREADY DELETED the account and added it back, problem still persists.

If your e-mail account settings arent sticking, thats a issue with your e-mail provider, which from the sounds of it is a third party provider, and not Apple, if that is the case, that you are using a 3rd party e-mail provider you must contact them because that would make it an issue unrelated to apple, but i guess one thing you could try before that just for giggles is a hard reset. Hold the Sleep/Wake Button, and the Home button until you see the Apple logo appear, then go into your mail check your settings and see what happens

  • On iOS 6, I'm unable to swith off my iPhone 4 and also missing sent mails.?

    Hi,
I updated my iOS 5.1.1. to recent iOS 6 but I'm facing many problems besides Apple Maps. I'm unable to send emails hence I was trying to swich off my iPhone 4 but that also problematic.

If you have an existing backup that was made before this happened, and if you are the original owner of the phone and know the ID and password that were used to activate it originally, you can force the phone into recovery mode (which will erase it) in order to restore it, as explained here: If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.  Caution: if you aren't the original owner, or don't know the ID and password that were used to activate it originally, you will not be able to reactivate the phone after restoring it.  After restoring it, you can restore your existing backup.
