Keeping b/g and n separate using AEBS & AEX

I'm trying to create two ways for devices to connect to each other and the Internet via my cable modem, an Airport Extreme Base station, and an older Airport Express.
My first issue was verifying which Apple devices use b/g and which use n. This info is not in one convenient place (unless I failed to find it), but I discovered that setting the AEBS to "n only (2.4 gHz)" is a handy way to test: b/g devices will not be able to join its network.
Remaining issues cropped up with trying to navigate the maze of WDS vs. Bridge Mode vs. extending or not. Problems included b/g devices getting knocked off the AEX intermittently and my USB printer (attached to the AEX) not being available from some devices. I've read lots of good info here and tried various settings, some of which worked; some not.
Rather than go through all of that here, I'd like to ask the experts if my setup (which appears to be working now) is the best way to do what I want (keep b/g and n separate) and if by chance I've stumbled on the best set of options, to post it here for others:
Devices: AEBS (n), AEX (b/g), iPhone 4, G4 iMac, Intel MacBook, iPod Touch Gen 2, Apple TV Gen 1, iBook G4, Comcast cable modem, Canon 3500 printer, USB HD hosting Time Machine backups.
The cable modem, iMac, and AEX are connected to the AEBS via Ethernet (WAN & LAN). The external HD is connected to the AEBS via USB. The printer is connected to the AEX via USB.
_AEBS config:_
Wireless mode: create a network
Wireless network name: Fast
Radio mode: 802.11n only (2.4 gHz)
Allow extended: not checked
Security: WPA2 Personal
Internet: Connect using Ethernet
Connect sharing: Share a public IP address
TCP/IP Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
DHCP address range in the 10.x space
_AEX config:_
Wireless mode: create a network
Wireless network name: Slow
Radio mode: 802.11 b/g compatible
Security: WPA2 Personal
Internet: Connect using Ethernet
Connect sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
TCP/IP Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
Any advice or comments welcome.
Thanks,

Many thanks, Bob. I was hoping my post would catch your attention and when I referred to "experts" I was tempted to put "@Bob T" in parentheses [g].

The ID for iTunes must be the same on both devices for it to automatically download purchases made on the other phone.
For example, if you have been using [email protected] for iTunes, continue to do so. One of you could also use [email protected] for their iCloud account and the other one use [email protected] for theirs, alternatively you could use [email protected] and [email protected] for the two separate iCloud accounts.

  • We have one cloud account with 1 iTunes account but 2 phones. Can we keep out calendars and contacts separate

My wife and I both have iPhones and want to know if we can keep the same itunes account while keeping our contacts and calendars separate?

Yes.  Just set up separate iCloud accounts with separate Apple IDs.  You can continue to share the same iTunes account ID; it does not need to be the same as the ID you use for other services such as iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, etc.
You should also avoid using the same ID for FaceTime and iMessage or you will end up getting each other's text messages and FaceTime calls.  If you are, on one of the phones go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with a different ID (such as the one you use for your iCloud account).  Then do the same thing in Settings>FaceTime.

    Madmonkey,
First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
    Gaylefromnewhope,
Seems like you tried this all ready and it didn't help.
Next might be to reset all settings.
Settings > General > Reset > Reset all Settings
Note that when you do this you will not lose data but you will have to enter all passwords again.
If that doesn't help you might tries a restore of your iPad using iTunes on the computer you normall sync with. Do a backup and save all data first. Or
Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • I just want to keep CSx updated and continue to use it like I have been.

I'm an individual.. One computer!, no team or bank of computers... Just me..
    I don't need a cloud! I don't want a cloud!
I just want to keep CSx updated. and continue to use it like I have been.
Cost me about $600 every other year to keep this updated.
I can afford $600/every other year.
What do I need to do to keep using The Design Premium CSx ??

Short answer:   You are [or eventually will be] outdated and out of luck.
I've been a master collection user since it's been availaboe, but I've been struggling with this and other questions, and have come to the conclusion that I need to be proactive in looking for alternatives, so when the day comes that CS6 stops working on new hardware, I'll have options.
My biggest concern is that with the current CC model, if a user decides to stop, or can't afford, their subscription fee, thirty days later they loose access to ALL THEIR CREATIVE WORK-- without monthly activation,  all the CC software STOPS WORKING!
Moreover, after everyone is on the CC hook, what is to stop Adobe from charging $100 per month, or $300....  As a huge company driven by investors and quarterly profits they will charge whatever the market will bear.  Many will be held hostage to the subscription fee, no matter how high it goes, because they won't be able to afford to loose access their creative work.  So... going forward the market will probably bear a lot more than $49 per month.
Then, if this wasn't enough risk, there is also the dependence on the web and Adobe's IT infrastructure to keep the software "activated".  I know it is probably extremely unlikely, but what if they suffer a cyber-attack like many other large and theoretically "secure" companies?  What kind of havoc could an attacker wreak with the creative community if suddenly all our software stopped working?  You may laugh, but I just read an article today on cNet Security about how Twitter's domain registration was hacked by SEA-- at least for a brief time, SEA was the admin for the Twitter domain records.
Since hearing Adobe's plans, I realised that over the years, with the exception of 3D, I've gravitated to Adobe for all my creative work-- they really do make great software.  Even though this represents a huge investment in time and "learning curve", I've started to seriously evaluate alternatives.  When the day comes that CS6 is no longer working on new hardware, I hopefully will already be using other brands.
My current thinking:  If Apple makes FCP 11 a professional tool again, that would be my first choice for video.  If they don't, I've been taking a hard look at Sony Vegas-- or there is always Avid.  For compositing, while I really know and love After Effects, I have a copy of Eyeon's Digital Fusion that came free with Lightwave3D that I've never even installed.  It is now out of the closet and sitting on my desk, waiting until I have a few minutes to install it to give it a try.  For photo editing and vector graphics, I've been looking at the Corel suite-- I haven't used Corel in years, as it always seemed "clunky" compared to Illustrator,  but it is a viable alternative, and used and loved by many.  Photoshop is an industry standard and I've used it for fifteen years, but I also have both Gimp and Cinepaint on Mac, and use them frequently already.  They aren't as capable or as slick as Photoshop, but they do everything I need, so photo editing is covered.  As far as web tools, Dreamweaver is nice, but web development can be done with any editor.  Flash (and all browser plugin technology) is being supplanted by HTML5 and Javascript, so loosing Flash, going forward, is no great loss.  I haven't used it in over a year anyway, but f I really need 2D animation there is always (gasp) Silverlight, and maybe also other tools that I'm currently unaware of.  InDesign isn't a concern for me as I almost never do print.
So bottom line for me:   If Adobe works out a compromise where the software keeps working even if the subscription lapses, then it would be a different ballgame for me. I'd even be willing to agree to pay two or three year contract before the perpetual license kicked in.  However, as it stands, the CC subscription (and potentially vanishing software) represents a level of trust in Adobe that I'm not prepared to give.

  • How do you keep your iPhones and iPads separate under the same apple id

I have a family of iPhones and iPads and one apple ID, well needless to say each device is getting face time calls and text messages from eachother. I might add it makes for some pretty interesting conversations. I would like to learn how to keep each device seperate under the same apple ID, or would it be better to set up seperate ID's for everything? Anyways, any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

AOL by policy deletes messages in the Inbox (and also the Sent) after 27 days. To save longer, the messages must be moved to the folder named Saved that AOL sets up on the server. There is nothing in Mail to cause this, but AOL's own action.
Is this perhaps what she is having issue with?

  • I have to use a recovery disk to fix my computer. Where does FF keep the login and passwords I use on a daily basis. I want to download and save them for reinstallation?

I am about to use a recovery disk to reset my computer to it's original factory settings and operating system. I want to download and save all of my Firefox bookmarks, website logins & passwords for the websites.
How can I do this and where is all the above located on my computer. I would like to copy them and then reinstall after the recovery disk operation is completed.

Firefox needs 32-bit plugins, so you'll need to install 32-bit Java for Firefox.
No, you can't change Firefox from 32-bt to 64-bit. There is a Nightly 64-bit version (alpha) of Firefox, but it is used only to test for regressions until development is resumed.

  • Can I use accounts in the Airport Utility to keep backup from multiple macs separate and separate?

Can I use accounts in the Airport Utility to keep backup from multiple macs separate and separate?

Backups from multiple Macs are always kept separate. Each Mac TM will create its own sparsebundle and will not interfere with others.
Using the accounts in AU will simply make each sparsebundle only accessible to that user.. ie it is a purely a security measure.. that is so weak as to be useless .. anyone can bypass it by pressing the reset for 1sec.
And what it will do is cut off everyone from their existing backups.. you will be warned when you set it up that what is about to happen may not be 100% goodness.. pay attention.. it is not.

  • My daughter and I both use one apple id and one icloud id. How can we separate our stuff without loosing any of the music that has been purchased?

My daughter and I share an apple id and an icloud id. I want to separate my stuff from my daughter's. What is the best way to do this so she doesn't lose all the music she has purchased?

There is actually something you can do with the settings on your devices.  As long as you only want your personal information split, you can use two IDs on the same phone to do it.
Your Apple ID is stored in 4 places in your Settings app.  Only the iTunes and App Stores settings governs purchases, so that is the one you both want to be signed into the same ID for.  The other 3 are iCloud, FaceTime, and Messages (under Send and Receive).  FaceTime, iCloud, and Messages are the settings that use your personal data, but do not affect purchases.  Signing into a different ID for each of you on those three and keeping the Store settings the same for both will let you keep your personal information the separate, but still share purchases.
If you need it to do something else, let us know and there might be something else we can do.

  • HT4436 originally my kids used my apple account, now they want there own.  Can they keep there photos and music and move it to a new account?

I want to create a new account and transfer my photos and music to the new account.  How can I do that?

Your talking about the famous AppleID divorce
There is no way to "move" music, apps, or photostreams between iCloud/AppleID accounts easily, but there are some ways to maybe salvage everything they want and get it to their individual devices.  I'm going to assume that each has an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, and that you all have one or more computers with iTunes (macs or PC's, shouldn't matter).
In any case, this isn't likely to be a quick fix for you, so clear a couple of hours in the evening and grab a beverage of your choice.  Here are a few ways to manage the divorce:
Separate iCloud (ie, contacts, calendars, etc) accounts for each person, Shared iTunes Music/Apps:
This approach allows each person to have their own device backups, plus their own address books, calendars, etc, and it allows everyone to share the apps and music that has been and will be purchased. This will also mean each has their own photostreams as well.  With calendars and photostreams, you can create "shared" versions of each so you and they can collectively contribute and modify the calendar, and can collectively contribute to a shared photostream.
The great benefit to this approach is that all of the music and apps that have been purchased will continue to be available on all of the devices.
The disadvantage is that with the shared iTunes account, everybody is sharing everybody else's gift cards and/or money that is in the account.  Monitoring it is a manual process.
    To setup this scenario:
Create a new iCloud account (ie, new AppleID's) for everyone, including yourself.
In the iCloud settings on each mobile device use the new iCloud account (ie, AppleID) for that person.
Use those same iCloud credentials for the iCloud settings in each person's account on the computer.  (Note that if you do NOT use separate accounts for each person on the computer, this method will not work for synching the iCloud stuff, just the iTunes stuff.  I highly recommend you create user accounts on the computer for each person).
On your mobile devices, in the iTunes and App Store settings continue to use the "original" AppleID under which all of the music and apps were purchased.
In iTunes for each user account on the computer, continue to use the "original" Apple ID, just like on the mobile devices.
For each person's photos that they wish to keep, make sure that they are currently in the mobile device's camera roll (just as Winston suggested).
Now the device's and computer user accounts are all setup.  When the mobile device's are synched to user's (or the common) iTunes app, all of the music and apps will stay, and all of the photos that were previously in each user's camera roll will still be there.
Separate iTunes Accounts, Shared iCloud Account
This approach allows each person to have their own iTunes account for music and apps, but will keep all of the iCloud stuff (like contacts and calendars and photostreams) identical accross everybody's devices.  This is particularly useful if the kids get their own gift cards and are not amenable to sharing with their family and you want to continue to have identical address books, calendars, and photostreams.
The main drawback to this approach is that it is possible that each individual will lose access to some music and all purchased apps.  That will depend highly upon when the music was purchased.  ie, was it purchased before or after Apple went to a digital rights management (DRM) free model for music.  All purchased apps will technically be lost, but sometimes its still possible to "keep" those apps via iTunes and your device will continually and annoyingly ask you for the credentials (ie, the original AppleID) under which the app was purchased.
Another drawback is that the free iCloud storage account is likely to be enough to backup all of your devices (if you have more than 1).  Therefore, you will likely have to purchase a larger iCloud storage plan.
    To setup this scenario:
Create a new AppleID for each person for use in the iTunes Music/App store.  Remember to keep your original AppleID that was used for all of the purchases to date.
On each mobile device, in the iTunes and App Store settings input the new AppleID for each user.  On one of the devices (you'll have to figure out on which one it makes the most sense), continue to use the original AppleID.
In the iCloud settings for each device (and the computer accounts), continue to use the original AppleID.
Now you must setup new iTunes databases on the computer for each seperate user.  The only way to do this is to have each user have a seperate account on the computer (again, mac or PC, doesn't matter).
In each user's iTunes app on the computer, input the iTunes store credentials that match his/her mobile device that you setup in step 2 above.
On the computer, move all of the music that each person cares about into his/her separate iTunes database (ie, import the music into iTunes by whatever method you choose).  The exact method for this is dependent upon whether its windows or mac, but basically, find the actual music files on the hard drive, and then import each of them into iTunes for each user.  You want each user to setup their "new" music database on the computer.  This is what the mobile device will synch against.
Once complete, synch each mobile device with each user's respective iTunes app.  You MUST use separate iTunes databases at this point.
If all of the music was purchased post-DRM (or is DRM-free for whatever reason), then this method will result in each user having all of the music that he/she wishes.  However, if some of the music has DRM, then your success here will be a crapshoot.
Photostreams should all continue to be shared and collective since they are attached to the common iCloud account, not iTunes.
Separate iTunes Music/App Account, Separate iCloud
This is the ultimate in "every man for himself".  The advantage is the each person has their own free iCloud features (including the all-important backup) and each has their own iTunes account.
The disadvantage is the same as "Common iCloud, Separate iTunes" approach:  individuals may lose access to already purchased music and apps.  The photostreams will also be broken apart, although you can setup shared photostreams for the future.
    To setup this up:
Create new iCloud/AppleID accounts for each person (except for the original user).
In each person's mobile device, use their new AppleID for both iCloud and iTunes Music and App stores.  One person keeps the original AppleID and continues to use it.
Follow the steps above for creating new music databases in each user's account on the computer.
Synch each user's mobile device with their respective iTunes database.
OK, that's what i have for you at this point.  I'm happy to answer further questions on this and help you figure out how to do what you want to do.
    Thanks
