How do I stop DVD player from opening every time I insert a DVD disk? I've looked everywhere I can think of and can't find a preference to set this.

Im pretty thick when it comes to this kind of stuff. Im gonna install quicktime pro but how do i stop the factory installed quicktime player from opening when i want to watch movies?

Right click on a movie file and go to 'Get Info...' Twirl down the 'Open With' section and select 'QuickTime Player 7.app' (This is QuickTime Pro). Then click the 'Change All' button.
You will need to do this for every movie file type, ie. .mov, .mp4, .mpg, etc.
Unfortunately this process may not work for everyone. QuickTime X, (the default Quicktime Player.app in Leopard and Snow Leopard), tends to override your player preferences. If after clicking the 'Change All' button it reverts back to QuickTime Player.app, then you will know. You can fix this by installing the Preference Panel RCDefaultApp. http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/
You can then use RCDefaultApp, (found in your System Preferences after installation), to change your file type associations.
I think it's pretty ridiculous that Apple tries to force QT X over the Pro version, but it is what it is I suppose and this is one way to fix it.

What notebook do you have exactly and what DVD player do you mean?
Do you mean the software?
Why you dont try to reverse this using the Windows system restore tool?
You could set the OS to the early time point before the DVD player has been deleted.

Is there a keyboard combination that I can press when inserting a DVD that will prevent the DVD Player from launching?

Ignore routinely (you may already know how) or only on occasion?
To make this a routine change:
Go to System Preferences, CD & DVD and set the action there to ignore when you insert a video DVD, as an example.

How To Keep The Controller in DVD Player From Always Launching

Everytime I launch the DVD Player, the controller is always on the desk top, and I have to manually hide it. How can I turn that function off? I looked in DVD Player preferences, and could't find anything. Just want to on/off controller manually.

That is the OS default feature; the best I could find is this key command: press Option-Command-C to show or hide the Controller. At least that would be easier and quicker than going to the Menu.

Trying to make a DVD for my DVD player from iPhoto slideshow

I have made an iPhoto slideshow of 100+ photos and 4 songs (from iTunes). I'm now trying to convert that slideshow to a DVD I can send to others and watch on my TV's DVD player. I used "Send to iDVD". When the transfer was completed, iDVD opened and I could play the slideshow (although only the first song would play; the rest of the slideshow was silent). Specifically, what are the next steps to get this slideshow into a format that I can burn onto a DVD?

To get the highest quality images in your slideshow, create it in iDVD. Place your photos in one album and your 4 songs in a playlist. Create a new iDVD project, then click the + button and add a new slideshow. Inside the slideshow workspace, under Media/Photos locate the album with your photos and drag it to the slideshow pane. The photos will be in the same order as in your iPhoto album. In Media/Music locate the playlist and drag it to the slideshow sound button. You can have your photo titles and comments appear in your slideshow if you like. You can also have navigation buttons so the user can advance manually. Another feature is that you can include the image files on the DVD so that anyone with the DVD can load the photos into his computer.
Limitations: no Ken Burns effect, only one type of transition applies to the whole slideshow. Many DVD players can't read more than 99 chapters, so the slideshow may pause or even stop after 99 photos (in an iDVD slideshow each photo is a DVD chapter). To avoid this, you can divide your photos and create more than one slideshow.
Advantage: While you can export your iPhoto slideshow, the photo dimensions are a bit smaller than the slideshow created by iDVD (or so I've read). This is why many people prefer to let iDVD create the slideshow.

How do I remove DVD Player from my desktop?

Somehow I have the application "DVD Player" in Launchpad, in my Application folder, and on my Desktop. I want to remove the icon from the desktop. If I drag the icon from the desktop to the Trash, the application will not open in Launchpad or from the application folder.

Then, drag the app from the Desktop into Applications. Authenticate if requested. That'll fix that issue. As for LP, I don't use that screen real estate waster with it's gaudy icons. Over colored there, but missing on the sidebar and many apps. Nonsense.

How can I keep pictures images from opening up in the body of an email

Every time I attach a pic in mac mail, it opens in the body of the email. I never had this issue with Outlook.
I typically attach several pics at a time, the email becomes very messy. Any suggestions on how to keep it from opening.
I am using jpeg images.

It depends.
When you copy an image from a website in Firefox (right-click > Copy Image), Firefox stores the HTML code that website is using to display the image. Then when you paste into Yahoo mail, Yahoo uses that code to display the image in your message, by linking out to the source site.
However, if you copy the image from a source other than a web page, Yahoo mail (webmail interface) can't use this technique and although it sometimes seems to show the image in the post, when I send, I just get a strange "inline image" notation in its place.
If you access your Yahoo mail on a device in a dedicated mail client, then you usually would have more options because the mail program will encode the image into the message.

DVD Player & Calculator Open, then Close

For the past few weeks, when I open either the DVD Player or the Calculator, the application opens, and then closes itself a couple of seconds later. I can think of no event that has caused this to happen. I have automatic system updates, but I don't know if one of these updates coincided with the applications not working. Frustrating. Any help is appreciated.

Ok. I did as you described and it appeared to be doing something. We restarted, but nothing has changed. We also opened in Safe Mode to see if that may do anything. No luck. We have found that the calculator will open on the screen and allow us to type in a few numbers as if it will work, but then it just closes completely without warning. We are stumped because everything else seems to be working as normal, except for these two unrelated applications. Could a security update cause this?

How to create a dvd to play in dvd player from an avi file?

Hi, i have a new macbook pro and have alot of avi files of full length movies (not home movies, box office) and would like to burn to a dvd.
Everytime i convert it to an mpg or something and drag into iDVD it just bounces back to the desktop.
How do i burn an avi file to a dvd to watch in a dvd player.
Have tried the program "burn" which worked a few times but seems to stop working every now and again.
Help please!

.AVI is just a file wrapper that can contain content encoded in many ways - several of which can't be used with iDVD.
You might want to look at Roxio's Toast Titanium.
