Keeping email local

Hi,
I recently had an issue where my ISP has managed to delete all the email from my inbox.
I thought I had mail.app set up to copy all my email from my isp inbox to the local machine. However it appears that not only has my email gone from my isp, it has also gone from mail.app.
What is the best practice for getting mail.app to keep a local copy of my email?
how do i stop mail.app deleting emails even when they have gone from the isp?
thanks in advance

Open Mail preferences, click on Accounts icon in the toolbar, click on the Advanced tab. There's a drop down menu near the top labeled, "Keep copies of messages for offline viewing." Select the appropriate option. While there uncheck the IDLE option. Now click on the Mailbox Behavior tab, and be sure you have the options to save mail on the server and set the drop down menus related to when these mailboxes should be emptied.

A better solution is if your email provider uses IMAP. IMAP sync email folders between multiple devices. Meaning any device will receive the email, all sent email can be seen on the devices. If you delete email from one device the email is deleted from all the other devices. Check with your email provider to see if they offer IMAP services.
If they do not your choices are to 1) configure email on the PC to keep Mail on the mail server or 2) change email providers to something like Gmail or Outlook.com (as examples). FWIW I use Cox IMAP email and fully sync email between a Win 8.1 Update 1 laptop, a Win 7 desktop, an iPad 4, an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 5S.

  • Do I need to keep a local copy?

All of my music is on a single external drive.
Once itunes match upoads/match all of my music, do I need to keep the external drive connected to one of my computer?
Can I store the external drive in my safe or even trow it out and keep everything on the cloud without any local storage?
    Thank You

Thank you for your response. However I am still puzzled about having to keep a local copy. To be safe, this mean that I also have to keep a backup of my local copy as well.
If you care about your data, yes you should. Redundant backup plans are what keeps data safe.

ITune Match has a copy my entire song collection as both links to my songs known to the Apple Store and cloud copies of my songs it could not match. So effectively iTunes Match has my entire 10,000 song collection but I am still forced to keep a backup of my song collection in a safe or on another cloud service like Dropbox or I risk loosing it all when my local drive eventually fails!
It's not a true copy. Think if it as a mirror. For example I purchased the recently remastered early Rush albums on CD. There was one album in each box in 24-bit, 96 kHz which I have ripped and then converted to AAC @ 256 Kbps for the highest quality AAC track I can get. Now, most of these tracks were matched to tracks in the iTunes Store (which is fine since I'm going to be listening to them on my iPhone), but they are not the same tracks that are in my iTunes library. If I had a disaster I would not be able to restore the tracks I spent to much time on, I'd have to settle for the tracks I can get from the iTunes Store. For me this is not an optimal solution, which is why I keep local backups.
If none of this is important to you, or if your other personal data is not important to you, then by all means don't backup. The choice is yours. But if you do not backup you will eventually lose data.

  • Icloud keeps emailing me saying my account cannot be billed - please go to "settings" and click on "accounts".  There is no "accounts" in my icloud .  I checked into apple accounts and it says the credit card has expired.  It has not.  what now?

The credit card used is that registered in the iTunes Store. Open the Store and go to your account. Click 'edit' next to 'payment details' and amend the card details if necessary.

  • Delegated Administrator Force UID to Email local Part on account creation

I would like to force the login id on account creation to be the same as the email local part.
So essentially mail local_part = uid.
I think I can make the field non editable by editing the JSP and xml templates or Security.properties however I don't see a way to change the default value that is presented to the user for the login_id.
If I could grab the previously entered email value from the session (using JSP) I could hack it in with JS. However the DAprinciple won't let me dump the session so I can see the attribute names.
Am I going about this the wrong way?

For the most part the system is going to be email only, I could go through and set all the appropriate settings on all the comms components to use the mail attribute as the auth lookup, but from a management perspective I think it would make much more sense to have user@domain actually be [email protected] a user to log in with their mail: attribute value is much more flexible. Restricting the uid to be the same as the mail: attribute prevents you from easily changing the mail address (e.g. the user changes their name when they get married) without also having to change the uid (which is a long-tedious process to be avoided if possible).
If uid = local_part I don't have to deal with any of that. This is true. That being said I couldn't see any easy way to enforce this requirement using Delegated Administrator.
I mean considering that traditionally a uid on a unix system has always mapped that user to that system's domain wouldn't this make sense? Or am I missing something....Mapping the uid <=> email address made sense when the user logged into the mail-server to access their email. It was easy to remember (and route) the email address login-uid@unix-host.
Given that this is no requirement for the uid to be related to the mail address, nor the mail-server hostname to the domain of the user for that matter, why continue to enforce it?

    Shane.

For example I live in Sweden but am English so would like to have the local setting still for Sweden but all text displayed as English.

Sorry but no, not if you're referring to the iTunes Store. The iTunes Store for Sweden displays only in Swedish; English is not an option.

  • Keeping email from expired account visible

Recently we eliminated a domain that we have had since 1997.  We don't think it's a good idea to disable the email accounts associated with the domain in Apple Mail, because then thousands of past emails disappear from our Apple Mail mailboxes.  Yet it's inefficient to keep the accounts fully enabled so that Mail tries to connect to them for new mail.  Is there a way to keep emails from an old account visible, but stop Mail from trying to connect to the account?  Apple, if you see this and there is no such way, wouldn't this be a worthwhile feature to add to future versions of Mail?

I have unchcecked "Enable This Account" and Mail still tries to check for mail everytime I open Mail for the first time each morning. And every now and then during the day it will randomly try to check mail on that account. (I have it set to check all acounts automatically every so many minutes.)
The mailbox is for a college email system, I've taken two courses at the college in the past, there is a possibility I'll take more in the future. i don't want to lose all the past emails.

  • TS3899 I have trouble keeping emails on inbox after upgraded to ios 7.

I have trouble keeping emails on my iphone 4 inbox after upgraded to ios 7.
It kept disappearing every week. Even though "Flagged" shows 7 mails, I can only view 2 of them, and cannot view rest of the 5 emails.
It had never happened on ios 6.
My setting is the POP for incoming/SMTP for outgoing.
Tried to fix the problem, I deleted my e-mail account(Shaw), and recreated with Exchange server, but it didn't work.
So I recreated my e-mail account with POP/SMTP again.
And set on"Never" delete from server.
It's very frustrating and please give me some solutions!

  • Using rsync to keep a local mirror - way to not download 64?

I keep a local mirror since i keep multiple computers synced and want to save bandwidth.
But now I have an x86_64 mirror for which I have no use. Is there some way to *not* download those files?

It is very simple! I use:
    rsync -rptvz --delete rsync.archlinux.org::current/os/i686 /mnt/storage1/mirror/current/os/
Note that I use -rptvz instead of -avz. IMHO this is better.
But why do you mirror whole repos when there is an easier way.
I'm going to write howto on wiki. I don't like this way - it wastes bandwidth, time and money.

How can I keep email to read later when off line please

I'm not sure how it works on your iPad, but once the email has been downloaded onto my iPad, I can read them even in Airplane mode with WiFi disabled. I don't see the images that are in the emails, but I can read the messages. I have one POP account and three IMAP accounts and it works for all four accounts.

  • How do you keep a local copy of a song only

I am enrolled in iTunes Match.
I have some local audio in iTunes - from music workshops - that should not be loaded to the cloud.
But I want to keep my local version.
How can I mark it so Match won't upload it to the cloud.
    Regards..
    Leo Marland

Turn off iTunes Match and change the Media Kind to Audiobook or Podcast. But if the tracks are encoded at 96 Kbps or less they will be ineligible for iTM anyway.

  • 3 family members have new iphones.  we are using the cloud. how do we keep emails separate

3 family members have new iphones. we are using the cloud.  how do we keep emails separate

Use separate iCloud accounts, with separate IDs.  (Note: you can continue to share the same ID for the iTunes and App stores; it does not have to be the same as the ID used for iCloud.)  One phone can keep the current account.  On the other two, go to Settings>iCloud and turn all data that is syncing with iCloud (contacts, calendars, etc.) to Off.  When prompted choose to keep the data on the iPhone.  (If you are syncing iWork documents with iCloud, also open your iWork apps and turn off iCloud syncing and choose to keep the documents on your phone.)  After everything is turned off, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from these phones, not from iCloud.  The phone that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  Next, set up a new iCloud account on these phones using separate Apple IDs and turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On.  When prompted, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new accounts.
If you have merged data in your accounts at this point, you will have to go to icloud.com on your computer, sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the unwanted data (such as deleting the other phone's contacts from your account, and vice versa).
