Keeping Hard Drive Folder Structure...

So one thing that has always annoyed me about the backup/restore feature with Adobe Elements is it didn't keep the folder structure.  For instance I keep all my photos in Pictures\  \Weddings   \Events \Etc.   This way if I want to quick browse the hard drive for a file without using Adobe I know what folder its in.
The last few times I used the restore feature of Adobe, it just restored them all into 1 folder.  Is there a way around this or has it been changed in version 10?
Thanks

See the help file:
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/elementsorganizer/using/WSae2ea3b149d0c3591ae939f103860b3d59-7 f4d_WIN.html
which has the following (emphasis added):
Specify a location for the restored catalog and files:
Select Original Location to restore your catalog, photos, video files, PDFs, projects, and audio clips to their original locations.
Select New Location to restore the catalog and images to a new drive or folder. Click Browse to select a location. Select Restore Original Folder Structure to preserve the hierarchy of the folders and subfolders that contain your catalog, photos, video files, PDFs, projects, and audio clips.

  • How do i get my folder structure in Lightroom to replicate my hard drive folder structure?

My issues is that post-import from Aperture, my folder structure in Lightroom does not match my folder structure on my hard-drive.  In particular, rather than be structured as in my hard-drive:
    2015 (folder)
    -> 2015-01-30 (sub folder)
    -> 2015-02-15 (sub folder)
    -> 2015-03-03 (sub folder)
All of the photo folders are listed individually as:
    2015-01-30
    2015-02-15
    2015-03-03
In addition, a number of folders have been created in the form 01a2a201aff9c8c684928629ea41221c0fa5930ab7 where no folder exists on my hard drive in this form and the image contains the right date meta data.
As I've got photos dating back to 2005 and a lot of different days taking photos, this is making the folders view unmanageable.
I completed the Aperture migration in two stages (as i did not have sufficient space to replicate images in move across to Lightroom)
    1.  Moved Aperture original images from being References to Managed (with the file structure above)
    2.  Then used the Lightroom plug in to import the library from Aperture (which has successfully copied across meta data and my folder structure + edits from Aperture)
Does anyone know how to fix this issue?  In particular:
    1) Adding in 2015 folder level to structure?
    2) Removing all off the 01a2a201aff9c8c684928629ea41221c0fa5930ab7 folders?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Joe

In the "folders" pane, right-click on the folder you see and select "show parent folder". Repeat as needed.

You'll have to do that manually, i.e. export each album of photos to a folder with the same name located on your hard drive via  the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option.

Trouble with slow Macbook Air. I have first generation MacBook Air and have a hard time keeping hard drive from being full. After trashing many docs, I have almost 5 gigs available, but mac is slow and I keep getting color wheel when I use Mail. I'd like to install Lion, but now I'm afraid it will slow down my machine even further. Do I have enough free hard disc space? Is Mail problem related to free hard disc space? Thanks for your help!

  • Can not remove ? from external hard drive folder in LR5 & can't link smart preview & original pic

I have LR5 and a MacBook Pro OSX 10.8.5 I have an external hard drive that when I imported photos from my cameras memory card I selected the hard drive as the source to move the pictures to. I forgot if I clicked ADD, MOVE, or COPY.
In the library mode in LR5 the external hard drive shows up under folders, but has a question mark on every folder on the external hard drive. I control clicked on the question mark for the first folder (the parent folder?) and choose “Find missing folder”. I then navigated to the external hard drive and clicked on that same folder, then clicked choose. Nothing happened. I tried this same method with individual folders and the same, I control click on the folder with a question mark, navigate to the same folder on the hard drive, click on it (I tried both just clicking on the folder so it was highlighted and actually opening the folder), and select choose, the question marks remain.
    1. How do I link the two to remove the question mark?
Second question, possibly related. I have a collection in the library mode that has only previews, the originals were added to the same external hard drive as above. When I navigate to the hard drive via my finder (not in LR5), the originals are there. When I am in the library mode in LR5, in this collection, and click on the preview square in the top right corner of an individual picture in that collection, it says “image can be edited using its smart preview but the original file can not be found. Would you like to locate it".
The original location of it shows below this statement and is correct; it shows the path to the external hard drive and the folder where the original is contained that I mentioned previously. I navigate to that picture on the external hard drive and select it. I get another notice box pop up that says “the file is associated with another photo in the catalog. Each file can only be associated with one photo.” I select show in library and it brings me right back to the image that is a smart preview only. I am stuck in this loop and cant figure out how to associate the original on the external hard drive with the smart preview in LR5.
    1.   I have the originals still on my camera memory card, do I import again? I am afraid I will loose all my edits.
I hope I gave you the right info. Every link I find to answer this question is related but not quite the same, any link you know of is apreciated. Thanks!

Have you ever re-named files using duplicate file names e.g. names that have been used previously?

  • Deleted Items from Hard Drive folder and now nothing works ...

    Hi All,
Under the 'Search For' heading in the right hand column of the grey box that comes up when you open your hard drive, there are the heading All Images, All Movies, All Docs .... I've deleted about 2600 files from the 'All Images' folder and now my iPhoto won't open as there is nothing in it, and my Entourage crashes when I try to open it.
I've obviously deleted files that were needed for these applications. The items are all still in my Trash, but I don't know how to return the files to their original homes. Can anyone help please?
    Thank you

V.K. - thank you for your help. I've manually moved all my photos back to iPhoto and that's back up and running.
The problem I'm left with is how to reinstate the correct files to Entourage. Even if I could identify which files are part of that application (can anyone help with that?), I'm still not sure how to put them back into Entourage. Is it simply a matter of dragging them over to my Entourage icon?

  • Can I use 'Macintosh HD' folder time machine creates like any other hard drive folder?

Very simply, is it possible, after using Time Machine to back up my Laptop, to use the 'Macintosh HD' Folder it creates like I would any other hard drive by selecting and extracting specific folders and backed up items as I see fit instead of going in to the Time Machine software and asking it to restore the drive to one of its 'backups' -essentially governing what exactly goes back in to my freshly cleared out laptop's internal hard drive? Will I run in to any problems? I am asking as I have picked up a software bug that I need to wipe off laptop hdd that would still be in the backups I have done and go back on to the laptop if I just asked Time Machine to restore.

See Pondini's site for all of your Time Machine questions http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html

  • How do I get my iTunes to reference an external hard drive folder?

I don't want to put all of my music on my laptop. I would like iTunes to reference my external hard drive iTunes folder for my music rather than the default folder on my computer. I have tried to change the iTunes Media folder to my "iTunes - External," but when I then re-open my iTunes, there is no music there. Help?

The only work around I have ever figured out for this problem is to create a new library with a different name and then add the music folder on your external HD to iTunes, Depending on the size this may take a while but it has worked for me. Good luck!

  • Keeping hard drive in sleep mode while not in use

I've got a spare hard drive in my box, which I'm currently using for backups with rsync scheduled to be done once a day via crond. Since it's only used once a day, I figured it would be a good idea to put it into sleep mode by adding `hdparm -Y /dev/sdb` to my backup script. However, I've got a problem with it randomly waking up while opening GTK save dialogs and such. How can I stop it from doing that or make it automatically go into sleep mode after a set amount of time while keeping my root drive awake at all times? And yeah, I know all the downsides of doing that, but noise is the primary issue here.

You can check laptop-mode-tools for the various tunables they use to optimize disk usage and let it spindown as much as possible.

  • Aperture Database Structure vs. Disc Drive Folder Structure

Clear this up for me please. I have been using Aperture for awhile and I have noticed that my pictures folder is kind of a mess. In some cases I would like to add subfolder to the picture folder to organize various shots and then import them. Most of the time I hook up my cameras and import and store where ever. I would like to rename the files in some cases.
Is it better just to import photos and let Aperture put them where it wants or is it better to do some organization of my pictures first and then import them into Aperture.
    Does that make any sense?
    Shawn

Kind-of. If you want Aperture to manage your pictures for you, it will actually create a library file. The icon is a blue version of iphoto's library icon. If you do this, your pictures won't really be visible to you in the finder window without using the media browser. However, it is extremely simple and nice to use as you plug in a card, and as you import into Aperture, it handles all of the file organization for you.
I use it and it works really well. The biggest drawback of letting aperture manage everything is that you are limited to the size of that specific hard drive. So, if you are on a laptop or even an imac, this can get used up relatively quickly.

  • How to keep hard drives awake?

And no, unchecking "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in system preferences does NOT work...
I have my original and 3 additional hard drives in my G4. 2 are set up as a RAID system and contain most of my work (clients) files. If I work on personal stuff for maybe 15 minutes or so, and don't access my drives containing client files, they fall asleep, even if I'm banging away on the keyboard doing other stuff...
Then, if I go to access something from one of those drives, there's a 10 - 15 second lag while I wait for them to wake up. Or if I'm busy working on client stuff for a while, and a iCal reminder pops up, and I want to click on it (either to view the event now, or "remind me later") or whatever, I have to wait again for 5 - 10 seconds while THAT drive wakes up...
Drives me crazy... How can I keep these things awake until I"m actually away from the keyboard and not doing anything on the computer???

If you run the 10.4 version of Apple System Profiler \[Apple Menu > About this Mac > More info] and look at the "Power" tab, you will see the second number is your Hard Disk Sleep time in minutes. They must think we all have laptops --the default is like 10 minutes. Knowing that this setting is independent, but not accessible in Energy Saver, made me crazy for just the reasons you listed.
There are two ways to change it. There are command line Utilities that can change it, and you can change it directly using Property List Editor. There does appear to be a downloadable package that includes PList Editor.
The command line Utility that changes it is pmset. It is documented in the man pages here:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/pmset.1. html
Check to see whether it is included in your System before you get too far -- I have it, but I have the Server Admin tools loaded.

  • Whats the best way to keep hard drive space clear

I have a macbook that is getting close to a full hard drive.  I have backed up the computer using an extrenal drive but with mostly videos and pictures on the drive it is really close to full.
Can anyone help with suggestions as to how to store things externally on the drive and not on the computer itself?

Simple solution. Store stuff on the external drive not on the computer itself.
Replace the computer's drive with a larger capacity drive.
    Get a bigger external drive.
These are not mutually exclusive. Do all of them.

  • Saving Outlook eMail to a hard drive folder with long subject lines

I'm using Outlook 2010 on a WIN7 machine. I drag and drop eMails to folders on my desktop quite often and in the past (earlier version
of Outlook) I would receive a warning that the file did not copy if the subject line was too long. When I drag and drop eMails with long subject lines now there is no visual warning or indication that the operation failed. I am aware of the file name/path
character count limitation. My issue is the lack of a warning when the operation fails requiring me to have to check the length of the subject line before the operation or double check if the file is present after the operation. Checking after the operation
is quite exacerbating when you are copying 15 - 20 files at a time. Is there a patch or something that can be done about this?

  • Library creating a new duplicate folder structure

I am using 2.0 on a Mac. Recently I moved all my data files including photos and lightroom catalogs from an external to an internal drive on my MacPro and renamed the new drive with the same name as the external and changed the external name and it became a backup. Lightroom continued to work just fine, seeing all the images with no problem. If I do a "Show in Finder" it shows me them on the internal HD. However, when I import a new image or even import an image or folder that has previously been imported, LR brings it in within a new folder structure that uses the same hard drive name.
My actual hard drive folder structure for my data drive is something like HardDriveName/Graphics/Airshows/image.jpg with all my images in a Graphics folder and within that a series of folders and subfolders.
Previously if I imported a new folder, LR would show HardDriveName/NewFolder and I have several folders of imported images with that structure. It did not include the /Graphics folder because I never imported the entire Graphics folder. Now however, after importing a folder, LR created a new folder structure in the Library with a duplicate of the HardDriveName and it included /Graphics.
I went to the first folder structure and picked a small folder and made a change to an image to darken it a great deal. Then I imported the folder all over again and it imported it to the new folder structure but the dark version was not visible. I DO have automatically write xmp data checked.
If I right click on any image from either folder structure LR shows me the image within the same hard drive where my original are found.
I don't want to have two folder structures and apparently if I re-import all my images LR doesn't see the xmp data. I tried to tell RM to read the xmp data from the image I had changed after it came into the new folder but it did not show up. If I manually tell LR to Save Metadata to File for a folder in my original structure and then go to the same folder in the new structure that LR is showing and tell it to read metadata it will show up in the new folder. I have a folder with 32,000+ images and thousands of other images.
I would like LR to continue to bring images into my "old" folder structure but that may not be possible. Any help?
Interestingly I have more than one data drive. This problem does not seem to be happening with my other data drive that I also swapped to an internal configuration.
I put a pic of my folder structure at http://www.pbase.com/santa/image/101246417 to illustrate the issue. My harddrive name shows as Brandon.
I spoke too soon. LR seems to be creating a new folder structure for two of my three hard drives and adding images properly to one of my three hard drives. All three were new drives with the names changed to match the old drives.

yes I did update camera raw. I think LR 2.0 asked for that. I did a search on "duplicate" and found no answer to my problem. Anyone with a link to any useful information?
