  • Is there any tutorial on how to keep macbook pro clean and fully working?

    Hi everyone,
I bought a macbook pro three days ago (and it works like a charm by the way). I'll be using this computer mainly for school work so I don't want to mess it up like I did on my iMac 2011. So what would you suggest to keep this computer clean and fully working (like a new one) for a long time since I plan to keep it at least 3-4 years? Would you recommend any cleaning software, or to manually clean the macbook once in a while? Basically, all I want to know is how to keep a healthy mac as long as possible!
For the physical aspect of the mac I already have a sleeve for it so I don't think it's going to be an issue.
    Thank you!

No maintence necessary, really - see Thomas Reed's article:
The myth of the dirty Mac
    ...and...

...both make good reading. DO NOT mess with any 'clean your mac' utilities - they're junk and may do more harm than good.

  • Keep the motor clean and running

    hi all :>
my arch installations last quite a long time now and i don't really want to reinstall my computers even there are some unowned/leftover files on them. So here's my question:
how do arch users keep their system clean? searching and removing files by scripts, reinstalling all packages ... !?
    best regards
    arch0r :>

There's a tool in archlinuxfr to sort packages by amount used, but I've never tried. Another tip is to use tupac to find all files in /etc/ and /usr/, at least. not owned by packages.
The obvious one would be using 'pacman -Rs $(pacman -Qtdq)' to remove unneeded dependencies. I have this aliased to 'pacmanro' and run it regularly to make sure I haven't accidentally left stuff over.
Using 'LANG=C pacman -Qi | sed -n '/^Name[^:]*: \(.*\)/{s//\1 /;x};/^Installed[^:]*: \(.*\)/{s//\1/;H;x;s/\n//;p}' | sort -nk2' (from Wiki, obviously) to sort packages based on size can help for freeing up some space.
Also pay attention to the messages when you remove packages; watch for notices that config files were left behind. You could search the filesystem for '*.pacsave' files. There's probably a utility to help somewhere.

  • How to keep the shared_pool clean ?

    Hello,
I develop a VB6 software which allows to consult a table containing lots of data through a user interface looking like an Excel spreadsheet.
On each column of the spreadsheet (and then of the table) the user can apply a sort and/or a filter on a given value (for example : display only the rows for which the amount is 100).
The user can sort/filter as many columns as he wishes (1 sort and 1 filter on a given column at maximum).
Moreover, which columns are displayed or not is also the choice of the user.
The underlying SQL querie is thus totally dynamical and has nothing fixed : neither the columns list of the SELECT, nor the WHERE clause, nor the ORDER BY clause !
So, I don't see how I could optimize anything, and above all avoid that these queries (always different from one to the next) full the SHARED_POOL, because this kind of message comes far too often :
ORA-04031 : unable to allocate 8716 bytes of shared memory ("large pool", "unknown object","cursor work he","kllqas:kllsltba")
I am not an expert in Oracle, so please excuse me in if my post is not very clear or confuses several notions.
Your help would really be extremely precious !
Thanks a lot in advance !
    PS
Oracle 8 is queried through an ADO interface

To keep shared pool clean, make sure your SQL is reusable. Learn about Bind variables. Do not create your SQL 'on the fly' by concatenating the SQL parts together and executing that dynamically.
Purchase Thomas Kyte's book (published by APress @ apress.com) titled 'Expert Oracle Dtabase Architecture: 9i and 10g programming techniques' to understand the programmiong tricks to improve performance and keep the cache clean.

  • How can I keep my screen clean?

How can I keep my screen clean? What can use to clean it?

    May depend on the screen.
A CRT usually has a glass cover. Twenty years infront with a periodic careful spray of Windex works for me.
Laptops are another matter. Best bet is to go by the product manual.
However, having said that, my 30 plus years of nautical experience led me to use WD 40. Of course I was boating long before I owned my first computer. Thus when one of the boating mags recommended using WD 40 and a soft cloth on my marine electronics, e.g., radar, loran, radios, gages, etc., keyboard and screens, it worked so well that I also used it on my laptops' screens and keyboards (at home and on the boat)
Just my experience. Not for all.

  • Unerased book keeps iBooks crashing?

On my iPhone 5 with iOS 8.1.1 I am experiencing iBooks crashes at start-up and no way to restore it.
Exploring iPhone content from iTunes, I realized that in iPhone iBooks a cancelled iBook is still present, while it is not present in iBooks on my iMac.
I'm wondering if this can be the cause for crashes and how to finally delete this title.
Added: of course, I tried several sync operation but this did not solved the problem. Nor did it to reset (soft, hard, master) the iPhone or installing iOS update.

Well it was not the unerased book.
I was able to access iBooks and all books in it ONLY LOGGING OUT FROM MY ACCOUNT an so erase all books and sync again with iTunes.
As soon as I log in again, iBooks  keeps on crashing.
Tried also instructions shown in this thread Why is iBooks still crashing after ios8 update?, but they did not help

  • IBook Keyboard cleaning/protection

Just looking for suggestions on how to clean my ibook keyboard. Or, if there are any recommended products/keyboard protectors that any one has used...
    Thanks.

Wish I could help you out about cleaning your keyboard. I never have to clean mine as I have been using Iskin keyboard protectors for years and wash the Iskin in warm soapy water whenever it appears dirty.
Have you tried the caned product the blows air on the keyboard? Sorry, I can't remember what it's called. never use any cleaners, try Mr Clean magic eraser. Geof

  • Keeping my laptop clean?

Im talking about the areas where your palm might rest when you are typing. (left and right of the track pad deal) ive noticed that if my hands have even a bit of dirt on them and they sweat  and touch this part of the computer it gets dirty and nasty and the aluminum is very hard to clean.  Any kind of removable plastic strips i can put on there? i was thinking about a screen protector for like an ipod touch but im not sure if it would come off clean
Is there also anything i can put on the screen that wont affect picture quality or opening and closing that will just make it easier to clean without risking scratching the screen?

I just dont want it to be permanent or leave an extremely sticky residue
Most pads are not permanent as they are not welded to the case, rather held on by adhesive which your stronger at pulling than it holding to the bare metal. You can also use a plastic (not metal) spatula or putty knife to scrap off any that doesn't get pulled off.
For the adhesive remaining you get something like adhesive remover used for gluing wood floors together.
It's a citric acid (orange) based cleaner you leave on for a bit to let it work and simply wipe off. Repeat.
Makes your machine smell sweet afterwards. Great for removing all that dried human oils/wax that tend to build up on a machine as well.
However the citrus cleaner is a oil so you must wipe it off with a paper towel and allow it to dry, the LCD panel should use iKlear on that only.
Ideally it's best not to use the built in keyboard or trackpad at all, cover the whole exposed top, keeps the machine in pristine like new condition.

  • What is the best way to keep the Aluminum clean?

Hi guys, just wondering what you are using to clean the shiny macbook pro? Eventually the notebook does get a little dirty do to oil from skin, sweat etc.
do you just use a little water and a cloth or is there a safe product to use?
    thank you in advance!

Also, the same way you would clean an LCD....
    To clean the LCD:
    1. Turn off the computer or display. You may need to turn off the computer in order to turn off some Apple displays.
    2. Dampen a clean, soft, lint-free cloth or paper with water only.
    3. Wipe the screen. Do not spray liquid directly on the screen.

  • Keep your root clean...you need 45 meg free!

Just was on the Project Manager of Fremantle Applications Framework blog and he states that the next update will require at least 45 meg free on rootfs...start cleaning....if you don't know what rootfs is or how to check availability install conky.

    2. Reinstall python
This one gives you around 20Mb.   If you did NSU update and reinstalled all apps you do not need to do this.
If you installed a python application (for example FM Radio, Quicknote, Witter, Hermes,gPodder, MAstory) before python was optified, you need to reinstall python.
there is a 'geek' way to do it or the easy way.
Easy way... Make sure you have WiFi Access for your N900 on a network that has been set up.
    1) Do a backup...include applications
    2) Do the NSU update
    3) Immediately after update do a restore of your backup.
    4) system will ask you to reinstall all apps.
