Keeping iMac G5 on all the time.

Hi everyone,
New to the G5 iMac world, but not new to Mac. Do you think that leaving the computer on withe sleep setting off is a bad thing? I have some apps that don't like sleep mode, as I end up having to reload them and what not. I suppose if there was no other way I could deal with it. So Yes or No. Is it harming the machine, causing excess wear? Also, I do have the display set to turn off.
Tyler

Erik, I have read that the Cron tasks are suppose to run like you said with 10.4.6. I did not have any issues except the network that I know of. I did install i-Life06 from the dvd and the network was restored to high speed for one week, then slowed to a crawl again. Not sure why installing i-Life fixed the network.... Running OnyX fixes the issue. I ran the daily, weekly, and monthly tasks separately to see if I notice any difference after each was run. The daily and monthly tasks had no noticeable effect but the weekly task does fix my network issue. Also my isp has speed tests so I know the problem is in the computer as up and down speeds are good when the network is slow. As long as I can repair the issue this way I am happy! Thanks for the info, Steve

  • Macbook battery life,  is there a problem If I keep it plugged almost all the time?

    Hello.
    New Mac user here, so I was wondering if there's a problem if I keep my MBP plugged all the time.
    Most of the time I'm on my room using my MBP fully charged and I don't disconnect it.
    Is there a problem with my batter life if I do that?
    Or it's recommended to unplug and use it till the battery run off and then charge it again?
    Because I work a lot on my MBP and that way in a simple day I could charge it and run uff the energy of the battery 2 to 3 times at day.
    What's better for the life of my battery?
    And if you could give me some advices to maintenance my battery and Macbook pro (also programs) I would appreciate it.
    I own a Macbook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2012
    2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
    With OS X 10.9
    Thanks

    No. I do that most of the time.  Perhaps monthly I discharge it to the 40% level to keep the battery happy.  Do not discharge the battery completely.  If you are forced to use only battery power and you see the battery is low warning terminate your session or plug into AC if you can.

  • My iPhone 3GS keeps turning itself off all the time for no reason every time I put it on silent or just get a Facebook message I have a broken sleep/power button anyone know how to fix this problem?

    My iPhone 3GS keeps turning itself off all the time the power/sleep button dosent work so it's quiet annoying having to plug it in all the time dose anyone have a fix for this?

    The "fix" is to get the phone repaired.  There's no magic solution for a broken phone.
    Bring your phone ant $149 to Apple for an out of warranty replacement, or find a 3rd party repair shop near you.

  • All my apps on my iPad keep turn themselves off all the time. I have reset, deleted everything on it, deleted apps, restarted... The works. Nothing helps. Input?

    Hi people. I have an iPad. Since I updated to 4 all my apps keep turning themselves off, all the time, ncluding Safari. I now have 5.1. I have done everything on the forums: reinstalled everything, deleted running apps, turned off running apps, turned off properly... I now give up and want to throw the blasted thing away. Any input? Thanks.

    Did this start happening recently?  I have seen this too and no idea why it is happening.  I find I am typing away and it just closes, I have to open it up again.  I found this first with Angry Birds, but have also experienced it with Facebook and Safari.  I have iOS 5.01 so not sure if it is related to this or another iPad issue.
    I wasn't sure if it was because of the screen or some other touch issue.

    How do I delete all my contacts and folders to start off new again as they just keep on coming back all the time after deleted?
    Is there an email address for better communication as this way I find extremely difficult?

    check your account settings, possibly under advanced settings.
    look for an option to check "remove messages from server" or similar.

  • Can I keep my iMac running at all the times?

    I have iMac, early 2009 version and in good condition. I would like to know, whether I can keep the machine ON at all the times ( 7 * 24hrs) or should I switch it off every night? So far, I am switching it off every night and switch it on the next morning. Please clarify me.

    In talking with a tech guy at Applecare, I was told to shut the iMac down--all the way down--every so often. I'd been using "sleep" for months and months, but this chap said the processor is running at about 10% capacity in sleep mode. It was then accumulating signals, loading up the RAM, and slowing down the computer. If you shut down the computer from time to time--stopping the processor completely--the accumulated "noise" is erased, and the computer will run faster as a result.
    I've used a lot of vague language here. I'm not sure exactly what happens when you use sleep mode for extended periods, but in following the tech's advice, my mac is running fast and smoothly.
    So I'd say, DON'T keep your machine running forever.
    FWIW.

  • How to keep internet PPPoe On all the time?

    Ok so here is the low down, right now every time i turn on my IMac and want to get the internet. I have to do it manually. as in go to system preference and select network and turn on PPPoe directly from the menu every time i turn on the computer.
    Is there anyway to keep the internet on all the time and have it connect automatically without going into menu settings every time.
    Thanks

    Here, you can study this - its pretty simple code that I wrote for one of my own students to develop;-import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class Baller extends JFrame implements Runnable{
       int top, bottom=250, left, right=250, x=100, y=100;
       boolean down=true, forwd=true;
       public Baller(){
          JPanel pan = new JPanel(){
             public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
                super.paintComponent(g);
                g.fillOval(x,y,30,30);
          pan.setOpaque(false);
          getContentPane().add(pan);
          setSize(290, 310);
          setDefaultCloseOperation( EXIT_ON_CLOSE );
          new Thread(this).start();
       public void run() {
          while (true) {
          if(down) y++;
          else y--;
          if(forwd) x++;
          else x--;
          repaint();
             if(x > bottom) down =false;
             if(x < top)    down =true;
             if(y > right)  forwd=false;
             if(y < left)   forwd=true;
             try {
                Thread.sleep(10);
             catch (InterruptedException e) {
                break;
       public static void main(String[] args){
          new Baller().show();

  • Keeping N85 screen on all the time

    How do I force my N85 to keep the screen on all the time when using Google Maps? I have tried to turn off all the Power Saving, Screen locks etc, but the screen still goes off after a few seconds. I have the phone plugged into the cigarette lighter so the battery running down is not a problem?

    Install S60SpotON(free) or Smartlight (not free). These apps will keep the backlight on. Get spot on at http://www.outbank.de/index.php?id=29&L=1 or Smartlight from any S60 app store e.g Handango.

  • Shall I keep power plug on all the time?

    Shall I keep power cord plugged on all the time for my MacBook Pro 2011?

    You can keep the MBP plugged in whenever possible.
    But once or twice a month  you should run it on battery
    until battery runs down to about 40%.
    Best.

  • Is it a good idea to keep MacBook Air in all the time

    I basicly used it on my desk all the time. I leave it in sleepmode too while plug in is it okay to do this

    That you have "experience" is not in doubt,…. if however you think you or myself cant LEARN anything , then its an untenable position to take on ANY subject.  I repaired laptops for 10 years, I have experience too, like yourself, likely more than yourself in said area.
    I refer you to   maxamps.com,    battery university,    …. and Dr. Rudolph PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Technology Manager for Lithium-Ion Battery Factories: >
    *Perhaps one of the worst locations for a Li-ion battery is in a laptop computer when used daily on a desktop with the charger connected much of the time
    *Permanent Li-Po battery capacity loss is GREATEST at elevated temperatures where the battery voltage is maintained constantly at peak.
    *There are two types of battery capacity losses: recoverable loss and permanent loss.  Recoverable loss (drainage due to use) can be recovered by recharging the battery. Permanent capacitance loss is NOT recoverable mostly due to charging and discharging INCLUDING minor capacitance drop and gain (partial charging; also deemed bump charging).
    *Always maintaining a Li-ion battery in a fully charged condition WILL SHORTEN its lifetime. Chemical changes occur in the Lithium Polymer pack-cell and lifetime diminishment begins and are accelerated by high float voltage and  CELL DELAMINATION

  • IMac G5 freezes all the time and randomly

    It happens when I'm working in applications, on the desktop or when I'm booting up.
    So far I've repaired permissions, reset SMU/PRAM, tried running Disk Utility from Install Disc (let's me repair permissions but doesn't fix the problem), tried running Disc Warrior (won't allow to start from it), switch the two existing RAM chips with two new RAM ones. This happens when connected to the Internet or not. It typically happens within a few seconds to a few minutes if I'm even able to reach the desktop.
    Interestingly, the Mac passes fsck but sometimes--as the Mac freezes--I get this line in terminal.
    localhost:/ root# USBF: 96. 78 AppleUSBUHCI[0x39fd000]: attempt to resume during global suspend
    At that point the computer will be frozen solid.
    Any ideas???

    Do you recall when you last had a stable system (to identify changes that may have contributed to the issue)? Have you been running the Software Update patches to get to 10.4.11, or have you downloaded the combo updater (try downloading the 10.4.11 combo updater and rerunning it...something may have gotten corrupted in the patch updates)? Go to:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
    Do you have an external FireWire drive you can run DiskWarrior 4.0 from, if the CD won't boot it? On my Macs, I always create a separate partition to run utilities from. It's fast and convenient for running down issues. In this case, you'd be able to determine whether the issue is your user environment, or the iMac's hardware.
    If all else fails, can you perform an Archive & Install, then run the combo updater to get you back to 10.4.11, without it impacting your installed applications (some apps make changes in the System configuration that will be moved to the Previous Systems folder at the root after the A&I)?

  • Upgraded from 2gb to 4gb of RAM and now my Imac freezes up all the time.

    I have a 2009 model Imac and I upgraded from 2gb to 4gb but now after about 20 minutes of the computer being on it will freeze up randomly. It could be 20 mins - 3 hours of use before it freezes up. I did my research and I'm didn't get any RAM my Imac couldn't handle...so I have NO idea what's wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
