Keeping it organized and updated

I have tons of music in a very structured manner outside of itunes. I would like to add this stuff to my ipod but without Itunes messing my files up (with renaming and moving). So i have unchecked both "Copy to.." and "Organize.." in advanced options.
Problem now occurs if I change a file manually outside of Itunes then it does not update in Itunes. I cant find any options to "recheck added folders" or similiar.
Is there no way to make Itunes "update/check" a music folder while keeping my own structure and without getting duplicates?

Is there no way to make Itunes "update/check" a music folder while keeping my own structure and not getting duplicates?
Sort of.
This is one of the drawbacks of maintaining the music folder yourself.
If you move the file or rename it, iTunes will likely lose it.
If you simply change the ID3 tags, you can Get Info on the song in iTunes and it should update iTunes with the info you changed. You should be able to select multiple songs and do this.
Checking or unchecking *Keep iTunes music folder organized* will not affect anything outside the iTunes music folder.
The main reason *Keep iTunes music folder organized* is even there is so you could uncheck it and manually put the music in the iTunes music folder yourself and iTunes won't rename/move it around.

  • Unable to 'Keep Folders Organized' and a consolidate library

So I recently upgraded to iTunes 5.0.1.4 and I'm having a problem with the 'Keep Folders Organized' feature. Simply, it isn't. Keeping them organized, that is. Here's the set-up:
My computer's HD is too small, so the music is all stored in a shared folder on my server. I mapped the shared folder (\\servername\music) to the drive letter 'm'. In iTunes, the iTunes music folder is set to 'M:\'. 'Keep Folder Organized' is checked. In iTunes 4, when I would edit a song ame via iTunes, the file name would be updated accordingly. Since upgrading, the filename stays the same. Same for album names/folder names. Uh... Amy ideas, anyone?
On a side note, I tried consolidating my library, thinking this might help. It didn't. Instead, wherever a song name, artist name, or album name had changed, it made a duplicate of the file, named correctly and with the correct folder hirearchy! Example, I updated the album name and then consolidated the library. I now have both:
    Artist/New Album Name/Song Name.m4a
    -and-
    Artist/Old Album Name/Song Name.m4a
Luckily, I tested this on a small subset of files, so I only had to clean up a few folders. I shudder to think what would have happened if I had applied this to all 80 GB of music!
    Any ideas anyone?

Seconding what Ian said, you rock!
    Ian -
I would have used my Unix skills to take care of the problem, except I recently migrated my file server from FreeBSD to Win2k3!
On a side note, do you map your video files to 'V:\'? =)
    Everyone -
Another work around that I have discovered is to add 'Network Place' pointing to the shared directory, and then when setting your library location, choose:
    Desktop->My Network Places->ShareName
    iTunes will see it as:
    '\\ServerName\ShareName'
And keeping the folders organized, consolidating the library, etc will automagically start working again!
    Apple Engineers -
Seconding what Ian said, this seems easily fixable. Probably should be fixed, as I can see people using external HDs to store their music collection running into the same issue!
    Thanks everyone for their responses!

I keep being asked to update my Safari but when I do a Software update it scans but never gives me a list and just says no new updates. Help please!

There are no updates to either OS 10.5.8 or Safari 5.0.6.
If you need a later version of Safari you must first upgrade your operating system to a later version of OS X.

Apps are permanently tied to the Apple ID used to purchase them. You will have to delete the apps from the phone and re-purchase them using your Apple ID.

I got this iphone from a guy and everytime i tried to update the applications stored in this phone it keeps asking me the password that the guy used to use, even thou i created a new apple ID of my own and updated the account of icloud and everything in this iphone with the new apple ID, it still asks me the password of the account that the guy used to use whenever i tried to update the applications, and i cant find the guy who gave me this iphone...wt should i do???

Apps are permanently tied to the AppleID that downloaded them and cannot be transferred to another.  Best thing to do is delete the apps and download those you want or need under your AppleID.

I have an old app game that am trying to update, but my old apple id keep coming up and i no longer use that id .  how do i change that id so i can update this app?  Is it because that app was purchased under that old id?

Apps will always be tied to the account from which it is purchased and will always have to updated suing that account.

  • TS1314 I have lots of organized photos on my PC and I want to keep them organized to sync to ipad.... how is the best way to do this?

I have spent a lot of time saving, organizing and arranging photos (for the last 7 years) on my PC, and would like to know the best way to transfer these, AND MAINTAIN THE ORGANIZATION OF THE FOLDERS, to my new ipad (and later, my iphone). I have a really good system, and I do not want to have to do it all over again, on the ipad. I DO NOT want to subscribe to another monthly service fee (i.e. the iCloud) but DO have iTunes on my PC.
What is the simplest method to do this ?  I have tried synching, but, each time have lost photos (on my ipad) OR have had NO ORGANIZATION AT ALL to the photos once synced.  I have all these photos (5.6gb) in the My Pictures folder, then subdivided into years, then subdivided into events and months within the years.  So, my transfer of the My Picures folder, completely transfers all of them, but with NO further organization.  Again, I have spent years doing this, and don't want to have to re-invent the wheel.
Can someone advise (or even better, lead me to a youtube video) that accurately shows the best way to do this ?
Thank you, in advance, for your help.
p.s.  I particularly enjoy Dan Nations very informative articles on how to get the best from my products.  And, wish Apple would explain "how it works" regarding the syncing methods on the Operating System.  It is the only thing I "don't get" about using my iPad..... meanwhile I LOVE my new mini ! ! ! ! ! ! ! thanks Apple, for keeping things simple.... Please don't change that !

Correct, it will only be one-level, the Photos app doesn't support sub-albums - the sub-folders photos will be included in the parent's album.
If you select My Pictures at the top of the Photos tab when syncing, then you should get an album for each folder that is directly under it - so if I understand correctly what you described then that would mean an album for 2013, one for 2012 etc. And each of those should include all the photos in the subfolders under it - so 2013 would include the photos from the events and months subfolders under it.
You can't sync them separately, only the contents of the last sync remains on the iPad, by not including a folder in the next photo sync you are effectively telling iTunes that you no longer want that folder/album on the iPad so it will be removed and be replaced by the contents of the new sync (you can't delete synced photos directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next sync).
The app that I use, Photo Manager Pro, allows you to select and copy a folder (via FTP), but you would need to select each subfolder individually, which if you have a lot would be time-consuming (I think that if you select '2013' it would ignore the folders beneath it).

  • I keep gettin updates from my app store but yet when I go in and update all it starts the update and then pops up and tells me that the application cannot be downloaded at this time. I have had to delete a few apps bc this isn't working.

I keep getting updates from my app store but yet when I go in and update it starts the process but then a message pops up that says the download cannot be done at this time. I have had to delete a few apps because of this. I have also signed out and signed back into my account and turned my phone on and off and still does the same thing. Help!

    Hi tmcrae
First check that your device is not full, maybe you may have to delete some photos or apps to make space to do updates. if its not full then you will have to try pluging it into your pc/mac running itunes then doing a backup and restore. Then you should be able to do your updates.
Sorry but i cant think of any other way if its showing as installed already but is not there.
    Hope that helps

After updating iTunes to 11.0.1.12 and updating Apple TV to 5.1.1 my Apple TV is no longer picking up my photo library. It just keeps saying "loading library" but never brings the pictures up. It also tells me that home sharing isn't on even though it is and then I have to turn it off and on on the PC so the Apple TV even recognizes the photo library. These issues didn't happen with previous versions. Any ideas?

Update on my previous comment. I have solved my issue. Issue was with Windows 7 firewall not operating correctly. I was unable to add itunes to the 'Allow programs to communicate through windows firewall'. Found the following page useful http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/windows-fire wall-cant-change-some-of-your-settings/514d78fb-39e9-47b1-b561-bc49cbdad904
Followed the instructions to the foot of the page, restarted PC, normal service resumed on windows firewall, added itunes to list to communicate through firewall. restarted itunes, restarted appletv, success!!!
Hope this may help somone else.

  • What are the recommended methods to keep CA Certs and CRLs updated in Account Forests for a Cross Forest Enrollment implementation?

    Hello,
We have 1 resource Forest and multiple account Forests. We've reviewed the Cross-Forest Cert Enrollment with Windows Server 2008 R2 doc and followed steps 8 and 9 under the 'Deploying AD CS for Cross Forest Cert enrollment' regarding publishing
the root CA Cert and Enterprise CA certs.  We run PKISync.psi to copy objects from the resource to the account Forest, and understand Certs and CRLs are not copied from the resource to the account Forests.  We are trying to figure out the best way
of keeping the Root and SubCA Certs and CRLs updated in the account Forests.
    1. Do folks simply copy the Root and SubCA Certs/CRLs from the resource forest into the account forests when they are renewed and then run the associated -Dspublish commands in the account forest?
    2. Any way for a CRL to be checked in the resource forest from a cert on a computer in the account forest?
    3. Any other suggestions/references regarding best practices on how to do this?
    Thanks for your help! SdeDot

    > Do folks simply copy the Root and SubCA Certs/CRLs from the resource forest into the account forests when they are renewed and then run the associated -Dspublish commands in the account forest?
yes. Though, we do not bother with CRL copy as it published to HTTP location only.
    > Any way for a CRL to be checked in the resource forest from a cert on a computer in the account forest?
I would suggest to not use LDAP URLs in favor to HTTP.

  • I've tried plugging my iPhone in the computer multiple times and it keeps telling me to update iTunes after I already have. What am I doing wrong?

So I just got an iPhone 4s and it won't allow me to sync it on my computer. ITunes keeps telling me to update to at least version 11.1 and I have done that. Even though i've updated it still won't allow me to sync. If someone knows what i'm doing wrong and could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Try reinstalling iTunes no music or apps will be lost.

Reboot your iPad and then see if you can set the security questions.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

In the past, when I updated iTunes, some items would be 'lost'. I quit updating, still running 10.6. I do keep my files on an external hard drive, which I plug in before starting iTunes. If I leave the drive off, and update, would that keep me from losing any files? Also, does anyone know how to search the iTunes store by price? I'm particularly interested in movies and audiobooks... Thanks

iTunes does not have provision for automatically storing one kind of media on a separate drive, so you have some basic decisions to make first.  Do you want these movies to still appear in your iTunes library, or are you content with browsing filenames on a drive in Finder when you want to look for one?  The second's the easiest thing because then you don't have to have an external drive permanently turned on and attached to your computer (wired or wireless).  To do that you literelly only need to drag your movies folder to an archive drive and delete movies from iTunes.  To watch them again you can add it back to iTunes while holding down the option key so the movie is used from its location on the external drive.
There's ways to move the movies to an external drive while keeping them in iTunes but the external drive iwll always have to be turned on and connected to the computer or you will see a bunch of broken link exclamation marks.
Realize what you are talking about is not "backup".  Backup (which you should do) is putting a second or more copy of items on external drives for the day when your internal drive fails and everything on it is lost, inclduing all your home photos and perhaps things that have been pulled from the iTunes Store and can no longer be re-downloaded.

  • Keep getting an HP update for 10.6.8 and I'm on Lion. How do I stop this?

My MacBook Pro came with OS Lion installed, but almost every day, I get a notification to download and update for the previous OS for my HP printer. How do I stop this from trying to install on mt system?

Open Software Update and, while it's doing its check, open its Preferences from the Software Update menu (beside the Apple menu). in Preferences, click the Installed Software tab. Is the HP update listed there?
Do you have an HP printer? I suspect so, because I don't, and I never get notified about HP printer updates. Software Update does keep me posted on Epson and Brother updates, because I have Epson and Brother printers, but I never hear about updates for Canon, Lexmark, Kodak, Samsung, etc. If by some chance you don't have any HP printers, you might go to Mac HD/Library/Printers and just delete the HP folder that you'll find in there. SU can't update software that you don't have.
