Keeping iTunes in sync on 2 Macs...?

I have my music collection on a portable HD, which I use at work and at home.
I add music and update file info at work, but I've learned that although I run the app from the portable HD the database info is kept in the User's Music folder on that machine. Thus, when I get home I don't have the up-to-date file info on my home mac!
Is there a way to change the default location for the database files that iTunes uses? If I could make the portable HD the default location I think I could access 1 constantly updated iTunes library without having to 'Add to Library' and import XML files.
Is this just wishful thinking, or is there a workaround or app which can do this automatically?
Thanks, Lee.

You can share a library between two computers. The following are several posts by Lori that point to the various methods to achieve that.

There's another way also but each computer would have it's own separate and unique library while using the same set of source photos. It requires using iPhoto's alias system. Tutorial #4 describes how to set it up and Tutorial #2 describes how to convert to an alias based system. It might do what you want.

I can't get my new contacts i enter onto my iphone to sync onto my Mac? Heeelp... very annoying...

On your Mac open System Preferences > iCloud. Deselect the box next to Contacts then reselect it.
On your iPhone, tap Settings > iCloud. Switch Contacts off then back on.
Give iCloud a few minutes to re synce the data.

  • Keep Podcasts in iTunes in sync with two Macs

I see the guide on MacRumors on how to keep music library in sync, but I don't want to loan the entire music library on both Macs. I just want to keep all the Podcasts in sync. Any thoughts on how to do this?

Alan, you could always use a cell phone. I do this with both a Nokia 6230 and 6280. Both are supported by iSync.
That said I agree with Rich.... dot mac works well, I use that as well to keep 4 macs running the same copy of iCal and AddressBook

  • How can I keep Mail in sync on two Macs?

One of the beauties of .mac seems to be that you can work on your email from various computers.
Both my wife and I each have a Mac laptop, which we sometimes want to use interchangeably (webcam, size, portability reasons). We each have an individual @mac.com email address but would like to have both email accounts combined and visible on each computer. What sync settings would I need to choose to achieve this?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

POP accounts can be set up to leave mail on the server. Thus this mail could be accessed from several different computers.
I used Eudora a while ago, and set up 2 accounts, one left email on the server, and one did not. I would normally check mail from the one that left it on the server (accounts like this on several macs). When I was ready to download the mail, then I would check it from the other account that existed on only one of the macs.
So in Mail, you could set up for POP and leave mail on the server. Then when ready to download (and not be able to see mail from various macs) you could switch to another user account, where Mail would be set up to not leave mail on the server.
However, iMap makes this whole process easier.
Normally, iMap mail can stay on the server forever. But I do like to get my mail and store it on my Mac after an arbitrary period of time. So I have set up a smart rule in Mail.
    It is GET MAIL:
if Date received is less than 10 days old
perform the following actions: stop evaluating rules
So every day the mail is received, and of course it is less than 10 days old, so the rules stop evaluating.
When I am ready to download the messages I select all in the mailbox, and use command-option-L to apply the rules. Any messages less than 10 days old stay on the server, Older messages then follow the other rules which are listted after GET MAIL. Usually these just filter mail into specific dumb mailboxes on my Mac. And/Or they could color the mail, or whatever else I choose to do with the mail.

  • ITunes WiFi Sync not working with iPhone 6, but works with iPad 1

I have an iPhone 6 and an iPad 1. The iPhone 6 runs iOS 8 and the iPad 1 runs iOS 5.
Yet, the iPad works fine using iTunes WiFi Sync with my Mac, while my iPhone never works with it. Whenever I forcibly make it sync by clicking on the device in iTunes and on Sync, it gets ejected/removed from iTunes. This doesn't happen with my iPad.
Is this a problem specific with the iPhone 6? Anyone know what I can do to fix it?
If I uncheck and re-check the WiFi Sync setting for my iPhone 6, then it syncs fine the first time again. But it doesn't work after that. So the device is definitely on the correct WiFi network at least.

It continues to be UNREAL how Apple will release iOS software without testing it.  Yep.  They BROKE WIFI SYNC.  It no longer works on my iPhones or iPads either.  UNREAL!!!!!!

  • I used  itunes to sync new ipad, not everything came over

I used itunes to sync between my mac and a new ipad. My old ipad had a few playlists with the media to play them. I also had been using itunes with this older ipad so I thought that these playlists and media would come over the new ipad after syncing it. They didn't, nor did the media to play them. How can I bring these playlists and media into the new ipad?

Did you select the playlists to sync in the music pane of iTunes? They must be selected to sync to the device. I'm not sure that I know what you mean when are talking about the media to play the songs. You have to sync the songs to the iPad as well and then you play the songs in the music app on the iPad.

  • IPad and IPhone synced to different PCs how do I get the same music on both devices? I used one PC to put CDs on ITunes but these don't appear on the phone which syncs to the Mac.

I have 1 ITunes account but my IPad is synced to a Windows PC to download CDs onto my IPad and the Iphone is synced to the Mac. I was hoping that the CDs I'd put on the IPad from the Windows PC would automatically appear on my IPhone when both these devices were sharing the same Wi-Fi at home. This didn't really work very well and I've been left with the CDs showing on the list on my phone but when I try to play them, the different tracks keep scrolling fast and not playing. I've tried deleting them from the IPhone, but they just seem to retreat to ICloud.
I've tried syncing the phone to the windows PC but this has just resulted in an error and I think this may be what has screwed the music up on my phone. I would just like to be able to listen to my CDs on my phone.
Has anyone come across this before and resolved it?
    Thanks

Terminology check here. Do you really mean a "CD"?  There's a difference in Cloud behavior between content from a physical CD you ripped (which only has Cloud content if you have iTunes Match) and an "album" you bought from the iTunes Store.
    Read references for Home Sharing.
iTunes: How to share music and video - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2688 - about Music Sharing and Home Sharing
Home Sharing Support page - http://www.apple.com/support/homesharing/
iOS: Setting up Home Sharing on your device - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4557 - "With Home Sharing in iOS 4.3 or later, you can stream your entire iTunes library over your home Wi-Fi network from your Mac or PC right to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch."
The above can get pretty complicated.  You are probably best off by syncing both devices to a single library and/or updating the libraries on both computers to have the same content.

  • Why can't I download iTunes 11.1 on iPad so I can sync with my Mac?

I recently updated to iOS7 on my Mac and iPad.  I was attempting to sync iPad with Mac & keep getting message that I need to download iTunes11.1 to iPad in order to sync.  I go to the downloads on iTunes & iot tells me it will email a link to the download.  I open the email & click on the link and it sends me right back to the "send email link " page.  Why am I not able to access the link for iPad download?  Come on Apple!  You're just leaving your loyal customers high & dry?  Steve would be very upset!  Now---give us a solution please!

You have to download iTunes 11.1 on a Mac or PC to sync your iPad. Then, connect your device to the computer and it will be synced

  • ITunes 7 - syncing between Mac and PC using network

I thought there was an announcement today that Apple had made it easier to copy your iTunes library between Mac and PC with or without using an iPod.
I have not been able to find such an option in the iTunes 7 menus on my mac or pc. I could copy the library using standard network file copy, but then I would lose the playlists and settings.
Anybody know the new way to copy/sync a mac and pc itunes library while keeping playlists and settings?

Ok, sorry. And yes, I just restored my iPhone as new and tried to put all the songs on there before I even restored with my previous backup, but it still does the same thing... even when I just checked the option to sync only "selected music or videos". How's that possible?
P.S. After I tried syncing with checked songs only, nothing showed up under Music on my phone and this message popped up in iTunes: "The iPhone "..." could not be synced because the sync session failed to finish." If you could, please tell me what that means, thanks.

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

  • Sync AppleTV with multiple accounts' iTunes library on the SAME Mac

I was wondering if this was supported in the new 3.0 release. I found an archived thread from 2007 which stated this was not supported but wondering if anybody was successfully doing this, or has a work around for getting both my and my wife's iTunes libraries (on the same Mac) to sync to the AppleTV.
    Thanks!

no, you can still only sync from 1 itunes library.

  • I have an itunes account on my PC and I would like to transfer my music to my Mac, because I am getting rid of my PC. How do I do that? When I plug my ipod into my Mac it says to sync to the Mac which will erase all the music on my ipod.

I have music on my PC that I would like to transfer to my Mac. I am getting rid of my PC and don't want to lose all the music on it. I was wondering if there is a way to sync the music on old computer to my new computer. I tried to sync my Ipod and Ipad to the Mac but because it is a new Itunes it was going to erase everything on my Ipod and Ipad. How do i avoid losing all music and apps on both of my devices?

Copy everything from the old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.
Type "move itunes library from pc to mac" or similar into the google search bar.
