Keeping library/playlists when only some files moved?

lost a hard drive unfortunately so many of my itunes files are now not found, with the big ole grey exclamation mark. i had the music i cared about on my ipod, and recovered that, but now if i just import that into my library i will have doubles and my many valuable playlists will cease to work. I don't want to go through and relocate 4000 odd files and am wondering if there is some way to get iTunes to automatically detect the new locations? recall reading that somewhere...

Jim-bo, yes that is correct.
If you just want to re-create one playlist you can export just that playlist as Matthew suggests. However, if you copy the entire iTunes folder you will get all playlists as well as play counts and ratings.

Can you create a playlist when the associated files are not present?

I want to let my friend create a playlist from songs in MY library, but from HIS computer, so I copied my Library.itl and Library.XML files to his PC to let him peruse what I have. Obviously this only lets hin VIEW the songs, NOT play them. Is there a way he can create a playlist that I can then move back to my library and put on my iPod?
I've tried dragging and dropping as well as right click>Add to Playlist, but neither method works when the files associated are not present.

No. iTunes will only add media to a playlist if the media files are present.

You should have no problem keeping your text in Korean when you convert to .epub from .pages. Are you saying that the Korean is converted to something else? Please provide more details about what is not working the way you want.
Pages can't embed fonts, you would have to use another app. But there is no need to embed fonts to create Korean books.

TREX unable to index only some files

Hi All!
I've got problem with my TREX (6.1 SP14 running on portal maschine SAP EP 6.0 SP14).
I've created some repositories, physically residing on that server's filesystem. It's an WebDAV repository and two CM (FSDB and DBFS).
Created an Index.
It indexes those repositories, and after that I see, that it can't index content of some files, while normally indexes others. It can't index *.doc, *.xls, *.pdf, *.ppt. It normally indexes *.txt, *.zip and folders.
In application log (in portal) I can see, that error code is 401 (6401), 'not authorized'.
If I open (for example) some *.doc file properties and try to access 'Settings'>'Classification', I recieve an error:
"An error occurred during classificationError while classifying resource /FSDB_local/testdocFSDB.doc for taxonomy localfiles_tax.com.sapportals.wcm.WcmException: HTTP Status Code 401: Unauthorized (Errorcode 6401)".
In IIS log there is:

I have a similar issue with a web repository.
I have an alternative URL set in the URL generator and I also do not have a locked index_service user (password is also reset) but I am getting the same 401 (6401 TREX error) problems as others.
Anybody know how to solve this problem?
How does TREX authenticate with the portal using the index_service user? How does TREX know what credentials to use? If it is ticket based authentication, how is this ticket set in the TREX system?

I have a 2007 iMac with version 10.6.8. When downloading "some" files to my computer, these files become "zip files." When I open the zip file, it produces a document in some coding language. How can I open the file to produce a legible document?

A "zip file" is a compressed file. "Zipping" in principle does not and cannot change the contents. So that if the contents before zipping are garbage, or unreadable on a Mac, when you expand the file you will get garbage or an unreadable file.
The first thing to verify therefore is whether the file, before it was zipped, was in a "Mac friendly" format. Can you do that?
You do not need an App to zip or unzip. These functions are built in on our Macs.
And yes, zipping and unzipping using the built in functionality, work fine in OS 10.6.8. And 10.7 and 10.8 and 10.9.

Embeding or keeping your Hyerlinks when Printing a file.

I have a query. It is regarding preserving the hyperlinks on a PDF file when it is reprinted to another PDF file.
Everything is correct and well when we create hyperlinks using the Marquee tool. We print the PDF file again as a PDF file. But when we open the new printed PDF file, and verify our hyperlinks on the PDF file, it does not exist (no longer appears to be there).
Is there a way to preserve or keep the hyperlinks created when printing the file?

I had a new requirement.
There are 2 systems sending files to XI.
First system will send a file to XI.
This File will contain only the file names which must be processed from the second system.
Then XI must pick only those files from the second system.
Then these files will be processed and delivered to other system.
Is it possible without using BPM.
If yes pls let me know.
Even using BPM also pls let me know the design.

this isnt a easy scenario
anyway your design should be as follows;
1. use file sender cc and read the first file.
2. in the data you will get all the file names you need to process.
3. code a java proxy to connect to the other system. use the data from the first file to read all required files.
4. continue to process as you need.
this would ideally need a BPM to make a sycn java proxy call.

7.6 Win crashes when opening some files that open on Mac

On XP SP3, I can play Apple movie previews without problem in Firefox.
I can also view certain 3rd party tutorials in quicktime in Firefox without any problems.
If I download the same files I was viewing without problem, quite often QuickTime 7.6 will crash when opening the file.
It's not a corrupt file, as if I try a few times, it will finally open.
These same files have zero problem if I open them in QT 7.6 on the Mac.
I'm running a server motherboard with ECC memory from a RAID with ECC memory, and I have NO crashes with my other software (SQL Server, Visual Studio, etc.)
How can I resolve this crashing issue?

I should have mentioned, to get it to crash, I double click on the file when Quicktime is NOT running (I don't have Quicktime set to always run either).
I found that if I open Quicktime 1st, THEN I can double click on the file and have it open (the one I could not get to open at all).

If you want to use Time Machine to recover the contents of one of its a backups to a new drive, follow the instructions in Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system. Note that you must select the "Restore System From Backup" option from the Utilities menu of the Installer disc to do this.
Also note that if you are transferring files to a hard drive to be used with a different computer, you should use Migration Assistant instead. This intentionally will not copy everything because some settings, applications, etc. are not compatible computer-to-computer. Migration Assistant will copy everything that is.

Repeated failure when time machine files moved to bigger drive...

We are trying to copy our Time Machine archive to a bigger drive. We have done this before a couple of years ago using CarbonCopyCloner and had no serious problems. Tried it this time and it was not successful*.
We have tried this again by following both versions of Apple's directions on moving our TM archive on an external drive to a bigger drive: drag the backups.backupdb from the old TM drive to the newly formatted larger drive OR use Disk Utility's Restore to clone old to new. Both took about 2 days to copy the 1.4TB via FW800. It again was not successful*.
* By "not successful" what I mean is - the files copied over fine. Disk Utility verified the disk(s) were fine. I kept the name of the new drive the same as the old. When I turned Time Machine back on and verified that it was using the external archive disk I could go into Time Machine and flip back to to files archived almost a year ago - as expected. After TM ran for a while one of two things happened: either the entire archive was replaced by only the current files (eg: the history was nuked) OR or it errored out saying there was not enough space on the new drive (3TB - the previous one was 1.5TB) even though the drives being backed up totaled 1.4TB - as if the old archive was still there (but not visible) and a new one started.
I recall seeing a post somewhere a while ago concerning trouble moving a TM archive to a different drive and the solution was to delete a couple of invisible files, but I can not find it now.
In the spirit of Full Disclosure, more has transpired than just moving the TM archive to a different drive. The Mac was changed - though its name remained the same. Also the OS went from Leopard to Lion.
In more detail, the previous Mac was a 1st generation PowerMac G5 2x2 running Leopard with 1 System & 3 data drives (thanks to a Jive5 bracket and SATA cards) and an external Time Machine drive. The new Mac is a top-end Mac Mini Server running Lion. The data drives have been moved to external FW800 cases (awaiting ThunderBolt). The TM drive will be on USB2.
[As an engineer, I understand that this should have been done one step at a time so as not to throw too many parameteres up in the air at once, but when you get shiny new hardware it's sometimes tough to hold back...]
If no solution is forthcoming, it would not be a huge tragedy to keep the old TM as a backup backup and just start anew. It just rankles me that following directions does not yield the desired result.

I wanted to use the new one for Time Machine and iTunes. I stupidly did not partition it.
I know it's tempting to want to use all the vast space on a large drive your not using, the problem is when your hardware fails, it takes both backup partitions with it when it goes.
Have multiple copies of your personal data on separate hardware, in separate locations, using easily accessible means and maintain two copies of your personal data off the machine at all times.
Your at that stage where you need more options than TimeMachine provides, you might want to consider cloning.
With cloning you could have just cloned the entire drive to another one no sweat, also you can access the files directly from any computer, Mac, Windows or Linux machine. Plus you can boot from cloned drives and do other things, like data recovery etc.

Double file extensions keep showing up when saving a file in Illustrator CS3???

I just installed the CS3 suite and when I am saving files in illustrator I keep getting double file extensions. For example if I save a file named "filename" as a .eps file it shows up in the save window with filename.eps.eps Also, if I click through the possible file types to save it keeps adding them one after the other so if I click. say pdf eps and ai the file in the "Save As:" window looks like this " filename.pdf.eps.ai.ai" Any ideas why this is happening? I keep having to mouse click in the "Save As:" box and delete the extra extension. This is really annoying!!

I've seen extra periods (.) and extra extensions.
then you and Dave have the same conflict with a third party software, corrupt font, corrupt preference or the like because it is not happening o my Mac Pro and I have the same model Mac as you do and I am working fine in 10.5.1 and only problem I have had with AI CS 3 is when I tried to place a 3D CAD file with the extension .dxf which is not really supported.
I have not seen this even once. Would you like to see screen shots, it honestly is not a 10.5.1 or Illustrator issue on its own. This has to be user specific.

Strange sound distortion since update (but only some files and Bluetooth)

My Xperia Z1 compact got updated to Lollipop (14.5.A.0.242) this morning. Moreover, the Walkman got updated to 8.5.A.3.3. From then onwards, some music files are distorted when played with Walkman, but only when played via Bluetooth.
This does not happen when played with another player (tested with VLC app). It seems to be also restricted to a special file type. Nearly all my music is stored with AAC. The files that have the problem are however only the AAC files that use the profile HE-AAC (AAC+ i.e. with SBR). If I remember it correctly, I created these files with Winamp.
Could you please look into this problem? I like the Walkman player more than Google Music or VLC and don't want to convert all my HE-AAC music to something else.

Photoshop CS crashes when opening some files

Occasionally, I run into an image file where Photoshop CS "unexpectedly quits" when I try to open that file. What could be causing this? I load the file from a CD, composed of images I've scanned and burned on the CD. Only one or two files (so far) have caused this problem. Can anyone explain what's going on? I work with files of around 250 MB. But, I close all other apps to free up max memory. No problem with the majority of my files. All these files are in TIFF format. Any ideas?
My Safari also "unexpectedly quits" when accessing a particular Website, but in another topic, I've learned that's a Web issue & I don't think that these "unexpected quits" are related. It's weird that both problems turned up, today.

Does the unexpected PS quit occur only when you open the affected file(s) directly from a CD, or does it still happen if you copy the same file from the CD to a hard drive before opening it? In the latter case, I would guess the copied file is corrupt, perhaps because of an error in reading it from the CD. Have you inspected the CD(s) very carefully for fingerprints, surface damage or data layer defects (pinholes)? Are you using high-quality CD-R media? Is your optical drive clean?
Is there plenty of available space (at least 5GB, preferably 10GB) on your startup volume? Is that the volume you've designated as the scratch disk for PS, or are you using space on another volume as the scratch disk?

Really bad distortion with only some files and ga

Hello,
I recently bought an audigy 2 value 7.. Works like a charm with winamp, media player etc..
however, whenever I try to play certain files with VLC media player or even some games (example, only the opening of Rise of nations) i get crazy distortion.
I have a P4 2.3 with 384 Ram. I have reinstalled the drivers, and still no luck. Please help so I can watch the movies that are being affected.
