Keeping links to second drive after SL clean install.
Hi, I am going to wipe and clean install SL and I want to make sure I don't break the links from iMovie to all my events that are on a separate drive from the OS. My projects are on the Boot Drive in the Movies folder. Can someone recommend the best way to do this?
Thanks.
At least two ways to do this...
1) Make a backup of your current internal drive using SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner, or something similar. I use SuperDuper. After doing your clean install, you can migrate your apps back to the mac through the installation process.
OR
2) You can move your projects to the external drive before you do the reinstall. Use iMovie. Make sure you have clicked VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK so you can see the external drive. In the iMovie Project Library List, hold down the Command Key while dragging the icons for the project to the icon for the external drive. Then right-click on the Project (each one) and use the consolidate command to bring over any music or photos or events if necessary.
Open the project in iMovie and make sure it works in the new location. I recommend you thoroughly read the iMovie Help on the Consolidate command before doing this.

How do I migrate from a former user account on an external drive after a clean install?
This question has been partially answered before but not to my satisfaction and, from what I've found, not for Mountain Lion.
My MBPr was running fine for a week after I transfered my User account to an external drive. After some reorganization I decided to move the acount to a different external drive. I blundered and, for whatever reason, was unable to log in to any account on my MBPr. Not even my backup account - which suprised me. (I tried repairing disks, permissions, etc...) I tried to resolve it on the phone with Apple to no avail. Finally, I gave up. I booted into recovery and did a reinstall. After 12 hours I came back to find that it wasn't a clean reinstall. And I still couldn't log in to anything.
I then did an erase and reinstall. After another 12 hours I now have a clean install of Mountain Lion on my MBPr. I have an external drive with my former working user directory (Home:Users/mrmoose) on it. (BTW, It is LARGER than my internal SSD drive, it is not bootable, AND I have no backup of it in Time Machine format.)
My current user account is Macintosh HD:Users/bullwinkle
1) Is there a way to "reclaim" my user account on the external drive - possibly without even copying or migrating?
2) Can I copy the contents of bullwinkle (excluding some of my folders under Documents so it fits) to Macintosh HD Users/bullwinkle? Including the Library folder? I have audio plugins, etc...
I'd still like my User directory on an external drive. But I will settle for keeping it on the internal drive. I just want my info back.
Why, oh, why does Migration Assistant require your data to be in TIME MACHINE format only - why can one not migrate from a full copy on an external drive? Why can't it look at the darn thing and say, "Hey, that's a copy of an OSX User directory. I can migrate data from that."?
I would greatly appreciate a detailed response. THANK YOU. Lama Out.~/Library is probably the one you don't want to move back because it may bring the issues back along with it.
All your own data you can drag & drop. You can drag the contents of any folder Movies, Music, Pictures, Documents (or as much as you want).
Rather than try to replace the Library you can take ~/Library/Application Support, Mail, Safari and any other folders you need.
To access your hidden ~/Library folder go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".
Then you can drag it to the Sidebar for easy access. -
After a clean install of Yosemite in iCloud remained links, which were opened in Safari on the Mavericks.
Please help remove old and obsolete references to iCloud for Safari.Hi leonie,
It looks like once my computer was subject to a clean install of OSX Mavericks, programs installed with iLife, i.e. iWeb, GarageBand. iPhoto, etc, were removed from my HD and cannot now be reinstalled.. I form the impression that they are not on the installation DVD's that shipped with my computer, and having examined the disks by placing them in my machine, there is no way I can tell whether that is correct, since there is no 'button' that allows me to look for their presence on the disks.
If you can shed any light on that conclusion, I'd be grateful for any advice you could offer. I guess it's not super imperitive that I have GarageBand '09, I can get by without it, but it would have been nice to have, and a couple of my songs use loops that were from GB '09, and these are now absent from the songs when played back in GB X. Of course, I cannot download the '09 version from the App store. Looks like Apple has me borked!
Thanks for your help, anyway, I'm always pleased to see your name here..
Regards, Ontradio.. -
My Safari keeps restarting, even after a clean install of OSX Mountain Lion
Even after a clean install of OS X, it restarts like almost all the time. Sometimes after a crash, I launch the app with only a page loaded and it crashes too.
Tried some of the suggestions but it still crashes. Someone please help me. The crash report as seen below.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
Applications load slowly on imac after Mavericks clean install
After a clean install of Mavericks, my late 2009 imac runs more slowly compared to how it ran under Snow Leopard. Applications like "Settings" take a few seconds to load, whereas under snow leopard, the application would load almost instantly. The Novabench score now is around 771, and matches about what I measured after the clean Mavericks install, but appears low compared to scores for similarly configured systems running Snow Leopard. The system is quite usable, especially if applications are left open, just slower. Is it possible to identify from Etrecheck a possible explanation? Is this level of degradation of performance expected when upgrading an old system? Thank you for your help.

Applications load slowly. Late 2009 iMac runs slowly under Mavericks compared to Snow Leopard.

After a clean install, how can I continue using Time Machine?
I booted from my recovery partition, erased my HD, installed the same OS, (Lion, 10.7.5) then restored from my TM.
If it asks if i want to use TM, I say yes. When I chose the drive, it seems to want to start all over, instead of just picking up where I left off.
Is there any way of picking up where I left off?Hi Frank,
You are sure you looking in your Library in /Users/YOUR_USERNAME/Library and not /Library at the top level of your harddrive?
When you open iCal what do you see? Are the calendars the two default Home and Work ones?
I really appreciate the responses -- especially if you are in the UK as opposed to Ontario.
Why, do you have something against London Ontario?

Microphone doesn't work after Windows clean install
I have a satellite A135-S4677 (Part# PSAD0U-0N700P) which came with 32 bit vista.
I recently did a 32 bit windows 7 clean install on a new hard drive. Everything works fine except the internal microphone which does not work. If I connect an external mic it works. Speakers work fine.
I have tried the Toshiba Software Installer but it didnt help
I have tried both drivers on toshiba's website for Realtek but it still doesnt work
driver_audio_realtek_TC40053600B.exe
driver_audio_realtek_TC40064600A.exe
Anything else I can try. Please help
Thank you.Satellite A135-S4677
After a clean install, the order of loading first the Toshiba supplied hardware drivers and hardware utilities, then the Toshiba utilities and software is critical for success.
1st Hardware Drivers & Hardware Utilities
1) Chipset related
2) Display
3) Sound
4) All other hardware drivers & hardware utilities
2nd Toshiba Utilities & Toshiba Software
1) Toshiba Value Added Package (TVAP)
2) Toshiba Flash Card Utility (sometimes included in the TVAP)
3) All other Toshiba utilities and Toshiba software
Also, Toshiba laptops are very finicky about only using Toshiba supplied hardware drivers to work properly, and those drivers supplied by Windows Update and/or the chip makers. That's why I recommend disabling automatic Windows Updates. To do this, click 'Start - All Programs - Windows Update', on the menu at left click on 'Change settings', under 'Important updates' click on the drop down menu at right and choose 'Never check for updates (not recommended)', and click OK. Then only manually check for Windows Updates, check all available updates carefully, and never allow Windows Update to change any of your hardware drivers. Though you should still regularly check for updates.
So, after disabling automatic Windows Updates, try downloading and installing these drivers in this order, and see if it resolves your mic problem.
Intel Chipset SW Installation Utility for Windows 7 (32/64)
Intel Display Driver for Windows 7 (32)(v8.15.10.1825)
Realtek Audio Driver for Windows 7 (32/64)(v6.0.1.5904)
Please let us know what happens. Good luck.

Can I backup app files or .dmgs from HD to reinstall apps after a clean install?
late 2010 macbook pro. 4gb ram, 500gb HD. Currently running Mavericks.
I'm about to perform a clean install of OS Yosemite from a USB flash drive. I've not done this before, so I'm hoping it'll make things run nice and fast again. I have a time machine backup if anything goes wrong - backed up on a device in the mainland UK (I'm currently on a 2 week break with family in Ireland, so don't have access to it).
I have a lot of software on the mbp currently, some of which I'd like to reinstall straight afterwards. Logic Pro 9 and some other production applications. Again, all of my original install CD's are back in england - I don't have access to them currently. I can access serial numbers from screen grabbing my app load screens and emailing them to myself.
TL;DR:
Is there any way I can copy various files or .dmg from the package contents (displaying hidden files using terminal) to be able to reinstall some applications straight after the clean install?
I'd really like to be able to make some music on a faster system while I'm off work!
Do point me in the direction of some further advice.
Thanks,
JackConnect an external HDD to your MBP that is formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (You may have to use Disk Utility>Erase to format the external HDD)
Open Disk Utility>Restore and the Internal HDD will be the Source and the external HDD will be the Destination: See this example from my MBP:
Then click on the restore button. Depending upon the amount of data, this may take several hours to complete.
(Note: My internal HDD (gray) is called BARBAROSSA and my external HDD (Yellow) is called MAVERICKS.
jackmcdonnell91 wrote:
Also; will the be any cross compatibility issues, given that I might be taking Mavericks-compatible Logic across to Yosemite?
There may be some applications that may not be compatible with Yosemite, but that will be very unlikely. You find out if they appear with a STOP symbol when you transfer them. If that happens, you will have to go to the developers web site and see if there is a newer version or drivers available that will make it compatible with Yosemite.

Reinstalling TouchSmart software after a clean install / upgrade of Windows 7
I have an HP TouchSmart 610-1150xt. I have no use for much of the preinstalled software, so I would like to perform a clean install of Windows 7. At the same time, I would like to upgrade the preinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate. In addition to all drivers, I would like to reinstall the TouchSmart software. I have already made system restore disks to recreate the factory state, if needed.
Ideally, I would also like to reclaim the hard disk space currently occupied by the recovery partition. During the clean install, I would like to create two separate partitions -- one for the OS and applications; a second for only data.
I have performed numerous clean installs of Windows in the past, but have always had access to copies/licenses of all applications to add to the clean OS. I have downloaded all drivers from the HP website, but cannot find copies of the preloaded software. While the application manager currently allows reinstallation of preinstalled software, it is not obvious that this option would be available from the recovery disks (or the recovery partition) after a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate.
Are individual copies of preinstalled software available from HP, perhaps on an FTP site? If so, how can I download these programs? If individual copies of these applications are not available for download, can they be accessed from the the recovery media or recovery partition after performing a clean install/upgrade of Windows 7?
Thanks.Did a Google search: here's something I found: http://blog.ehuna.org/2009/01/how_to_reinstall_the_hp_touchs.html ...

Accepting ilife before or after the clean install of ML
Hi
I know this seams strange but here is the situation, I am getting cMBP and will swap the HD with SSD, I am new to MAC and will follow these steps:
Setup the new Mac
Login with Apple ID and download the ML, to make bootable drive for clean install
Swap the HDD with the SSD
Erase the new SSD and install the ML
Now here comes the strange title, which is better: to accept the iLife after the initial setup before the clean install or after the clean install? I've heard of some users loosing their preinstalled iLife after clean install of ML.
Sorry for long post and thanks in advance.I'd do it after you install the SSD drive and install ML on it. That way you only have to download and install once.

How to restore individual files from a TM backup after a clean install?
Hi to all,
my teenage daughter's Mac Mini (running OSX 10.8) was cluttered with all sorts of stuff, even unwanted and inappropriate popup windows when using Safari, and more. So I made a final TM backup. Then I did a clean install of Mavericks.
Now, I wanted to bring back individual files and folders from that TM backup, BUT...
going to Migration Assistant, I realized that it would overwrite the clean install and bring back the clutter. This is no option.
going to TM, I realized I wasn't able to select any of the snapshots from the timeline
going to the external drive containing the TM backup with Finder, all folders within her "old" user.folder showed a small red stop-sign, which I learned is an issue with permissions. I wasn't able to restore manually.
What to do now?
I know I could restore the cluttered state and copy folders and files manually to an external drive, make another clean install of Mavericks, then copy manually from that external drive. This seems a lot of time and work to me.
Is there an easier way?
Thanks in advance,
MichiSee # 14 Here...

Hi
Sorry, not sure which forum to put this question in, so I pick the Security.
I have a question about the Bit Locker autounlock.
I have been using BitLocker on Win7 and Win2008. The autounlock has worked fine. I have two separate disks (c:\ and e:\). Using one USB I can unlock the c:\ and then it will auto unlock the second disk. No problems.
However, I had to create a new OS image, and then re encrypt the c:\ (OS drive). I used the same USB. When the computer boots up, I can manually unlock the e:\, but it will not let me autounlock the e:\. I keep getting the "element
not found" message.
Any help would be appreciative.
ThanksThank you for your reply...but that was not what I was looking for.
I understand, and have setup, how to auto unlock the second drive. My question is, does the second disk have to be present when the OS drive is encrypting? Scenario:
Set 1:
Original OS Drive (OOD) - already encrypted
Original Second Drive (OSD) - already encrypted and auto unlocked.
Set 2:
New OS Drive (NOD) - encrypted
Original Second Drive (OSD) - encrypted previously and auto unlocked.
Using Set 2, I have encrypted the NOD, and was able to auto unlock the OSD while it was present. However, since I have multiple OSD's, I then inserted another OSD with the NOD. I am able to unlock this drive, but not able to auto unlock it.
I get the dreaded "Element not Found" message. I am assuming that when the OS drive is encrypting, it somehow attaches to the OSD....therefore it can auto unlock it. If I add another OSD, it will not be able to auto unlock it.
Hope this makes sense. Thanks again. -
After OS clean install I can't get iTunes to recognize library on external drive
I have a Mac Pro that had an SSD boot drive and a separate hard drive that contains my iTunes Library and Media files. Because of problems with my boot drive I erased the SSD and did a clean install of Mavericks. Now I can't get iTunes to recognize the iTunes Media files on the hard drive. I've gone to Preferences/Advanced in iTunes and changed the "iTunes Media folder location" to point to the hard drive with the iTunes data on it. Nothing happens when I do this. No dialogs. Nothing. I've trashed iTunes preferences to no avail. I don't know what to do to fix this or troubleshoot it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Nothing should happen when you do this. This simply tells iTunes where to put anything you add after this. It doens't tell iTunes where anything already in iTunes is located.

I recently did a clean install of Mountain Lion on my 2007 2.2GHz Intel, 4GB RAM with 120GB SATA Disk. First, I backed up all of my files in a 1 terabyte WD external harddrive using Time Machine on Oct. 26; as I used my MacBook Pro during the week Time Machine continued to back up my files as I kept it connected to my laptop.
On November 1st I disconnected the WDHD and initiated the clean install. Using a Jonathan Morrison video on YouTube I erased all of my files on Snow Leopard and installed Mountain Lion. (I only want to import certain data back into my laptop at to keep it free from choking on files and programs that I never or rarely use; I only use it for writing and the calendar and misc: no pictures or movies: I am trying to be gentle with it because of its age.) For the next 9 days I backed up all of my Word docs and files in various cloud storage.
On November 10th I connected the WDHD again and Time Machine did its backups; as I worked I assumed that iCloud and iTunes was taking care of the internal syncing, of my calendar and notebook, contacts et. al, as I merely connected my phone, signed in to iCloud and opened iTunes and clicked SYNC. After the syncs, I opened Calendar and found none of my events; Notes, likewise, had only 7 notes: on my phone are over 40.
I began research online and found that the majority of post and responses to the question of retrieving this type of data (Calendar, Notes) was best accomplished by using Time Machine.

This blog informed me that if I turn off my wifi and erase certain files, I can then restore my calendar from my Time Machine back up. The only problem is that my Time Machine, while it is in the "Star Wars" mode will not let me access anything beyond November 10th. I went into my Time Machine user files to access my calender files - and they are there - and discovered that my old 10.6 drive is separate from my new 10.8 drive. I did a bit of research and found an article on that subject:
http://creativetechs.com/tipsblog/access-files-from-other-time-machine-backups/
This article informed me that one can browse other disks in Time Machine.
The only problem with this solution, for me, was that my new 10.8 drive was the only drive available to choose in the Time Machine "Choose Time Machine Disk To Browse" dialog box.
My question is this: How do I retrieve the 10.6 Snow Leopard OS X Calendar files (pre-November 10th) from Time Machine and install them on the 10.8 Mountain Lion OS X Calendar?I recently used Migration Assistant to migrate the calendar folders but that only created another user; after I deleted that user I attempted to drag the folders to my desktop but recieved a prompt that I did not have permission to do this. If anyone has any ideas on this problem I would very much appriciate any advice that might assist me in understanding the concatenating process of what I am attempting to do. It has been quite curious and vexing.
