Keeping music on ipod but not on computer

Hi
I want to delete all my music off my computer to give it some more free space and just keep my music on my ipod. Do i manually manage my music on itunes so that when i plug in my ipod it won't sync with itunes and delete all my music? and if so how?

you can do 1 of a few things...
you can uninstall itunes alltogether, so when you plug in your ipod, it doesn't update, but it will charge.
or.
you can go to "ipod options"
and unselect "sync automatically"
or the best option would be to buy a seperate charger (for an outlet) and use that to charge it.
however, I don't recomend doing any of what you proposed.
If your ipod breaks, and it needs to be restored, you have no way of retrieving your music.
If you want to free up space, select all of your music (the actual files, not in iTunes)
and put them in one big folder, and add that folder to WinZip, or some other compression program. You now have more room, and a backup just in case.
Try burning it to a DVD, if you don't have too much music. (most dvds are 4.7 gigabytes)

  • Keeping files on iPod but not Mac

Hello! Relatively new to Apple products so please be gentle!
Have got all my albums, dvd's etc on my Macbook AND my iPod Classic but now want to delete some of the mp4's etc off my Macbook to help on storage size but keep on iPod. How do I do this? When I delete a file off Macbook it then deletes off iPod. Is there something I can do to keep stuff on iPod but not have on Macbook using up memory?
    Thanks

If you want to delete songs from iTunes and keep them on the iPod you need to change the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos". Your iPod will not sync with iTunes in this mode so it can have different content, you can get details here:
    Managing content manually on iPod

One major word of caution. If you delete songs or videos from your computer and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem. You should consider investing in an additional internal or external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up anything you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD: How to back up your media in iTunes
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

films play on my iPod but not my computer can any one tell why this is happening

I'm having the same problem.  All suggested fixes from Apple have not worked.  I get the same picture in the corner, and the menu screen will show up too and play music, show the screen shot in the corner for each of the scenes, but no movie will play.  I'm at my wits end -- I hope someone has a new fix to try.

  • My music is on the ipod but not the computer. HELP!

I need your help people!!! I accidentaly "cleaned" my iTunes and now there is nothing in the iTunes file. However, all my music is still saved on my iPod. Is there any way to restore my music and put it back where it belongs - my iTunes file?

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Problem: files on ipod but not on computer- am i gonna lose all my music?

    hi,
hopefully i'm not screwed. i basically had to erase and reinstall everything on my harddrive yesterday. i had my songs backed up on a flashdrive. i synced my ipod with itunes and tranfered purchased songs to the ipod. today, i deleted some songs from itunes and attempted to sync by ipod with my library and got an error message saying that about 200 music files couldn't be found. these are songs that i didn't buy through itunes. i did something i now realize is stupid- i deleted the songs off my flashdrive. i thought once i synced last nite, the songs would have been saved in my 'my music folder'.
is there anyway that i can start over and transfer the songs on my ipod to my itunes library and not lose the songs that weren't purchased through itunes? if i uninstall itunes and reinstall it, will songs on my ipod then get transferred?
    thanks...

The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. • My movies will play on my iPod but not my computer

I've purchased a few movies in iTunes (2 Days in Paris, Inglourious Basterds) that play fine on my iPod—and have bought television shows that play on both my iPod and Macbook—however the movies that I have purchased on my iTunes won't play on my computer. This is the computer on which I bought the movies and I am using the most current version of iTunes. A screenshot shows up in "Now Playing" but I otherwise get a black box where the movie should play (screengrab attached). Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way to fix it?

  • Songs on iPod, but not on computer?

Due to some problems i've been having with my computer, my computer was reformatted. iTunes has been deleted, but I re-installed it. I have all my songs on my iPod, I just don't know how to put them onto the computer. This has happened before, and I remember putting all of my songs back into my computer --- I just can't remember how. I know it had something to do with opening My Computer, then the iPod file, and then music, but I can't remember exactly what. I also plan on restoring/updating my iPod. I've done it before, but I don't think I did it correctly. I don't want to lose all the songs on my iPod, so is there a way that I can have my songs in a file, just in case? Thanks so much!
-OH. Also. I haven't been able to put songs onto my On-the-Go list. I'm not exactly sure how to put them on there, and the instructions that my iPod gives obviously hasn't worked. (for me.) Can anyone give clear instructions as to how this works?

I just don't know how to put them onto the computer

  • Music on iPod but not under Artists

I have recently put on some new music to my iPod (now 1year old) and have noticed it appears under the "recently added" playlist, and the album will appear under "albums", however, the artist will not appear under "artists".
It seems to occur only with artists begining with B, Beyonce and Bela Fleck are the songs I happen to have added. This may be pure coincidence, but I have not noticed any other missing artists and I have also added artist such as Travis and this has appeared as normal.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Yeomo
    iPod Video   Windows XP

There are usually two things that contribute to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod, both due to information either in or missing from the Get Info>Info tab against the song in iTunes. 1) the song is marked as part of a compilation or 2) it is missing an album name.
If the tracks are ticked in the Get Info>Info tab as part of a compilation, they will not appear under Artist on the iPod. Highlight a song in iTunes that you know is not appearing correctly on your iPod. Right click on it and choose Get Info and click the Info tab (alternatively choose Get Info from the File menu), if "Part of a Compilation" is marked untick it and afterwards update your iPod, you should find it now appears as normal. Compilations are stored in a separate folder in iTunes so the songs don't appear inside the normal Artist>Album folder which may be why this happens.
Also if tracks are missing an Album name in the Info tab, this information needs to be filled in. The no album one is a bit quirky as the songs will appear under certain circumstances but the simplest remedy is just add None or Miscellaneous in place of a title. See this link for more detail: I don't see some of my songs when browsing by artist on my iPod

  • Contacts on Ipod but not on computer- what will Synchronizie do?

Hello, awhile back my hardrive died but I had my music and contacts on my IPod. I transferred the music to my new computer no problem- but the Contact folder the process created is empty (it just has a sample Contact in it).

My Contacts are still on my IPod. If I choose to "SYNCHRONIZE CONTACTS" which will it do:
1)transfer my contacts from the ipod to my computer? or
2)transfer my contacts from my computer (none!) to my ipod?
if it does (2), then I loose all my contacts- they will be erased (overwritten with nothing).
if it does (1), then I save hours & hours of manually typing then into my computer.
If you know for sure what will happen, please let me know? Thank you!

  • Keep songs on the ipod, but not itunes

How do I keep stuff on my ipod, but not on my computer?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You will need to enable manual updating...
    Transfer music manually
Now, when you delete songs from your computer, they will stay on your iPod.

  • Trying to sync music onto iPod but iTunes 11 keeps crashing

I am trying to sync my entire iTunes library music onto iPod but iTunes 11 keeps crashing (using Windows 8 laptop)
I have tried to do it manually in little chunk and also tried the auto sync method too.
I have restored my ipod to factory setting 12 times now and retry but just when I think I'm getting somewhere iTunes freezes in the middle of the sync and then tell me it "cannot copy  because of unknown error (-50)"
From then on my Ipod refuses to accept any more syncing, it may do one and then it freezes again, iTunes says there is an issue with iPod, so I run a scan fix, it is repaired but then iTunes wants me to "restore to factory settings" again, it's a never ending circle, I get it fixed, iTunes crashes and then I have to fix, restore and start all over again just to have the same thing happen all over again
I have read here and there that there seems to be a bug in iTunes 11 when it comes to syncing.
I don't know what else to do, except revert back to iTunes 10 but I don't know how to do that either.
Anyone else had same issue syncing their library over to their iPod and how I fix it?

    Hi, ktchinagirl.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
There are a couple reason this issue could be happening.  I have included a couple troubleshooting resources below that may help resolve this issue.  Some of the articles are missing the steps for Windows 8, try the steps for Windows 7 as an alternative.
iTunes: May become unresponsive when connecting iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3219
    Error 13, 14, 35 and 50 (or -50)
These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
Try a different Dock Connector or Lightning Connector to USB cable.
    Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. An incorrectly set default packet size can cause this error. Contact the software manufacturer that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows:How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694
This could be related to security software conflicts.  If the steps above have not resolved the issue, I would recommend going through the troubleshooting steps in the article below.

I just bought a new laptop and my ipod nano will not stay connected to my computer. When I first connect the ipod it starts to sync on my ipod but not on itunes. The ipod is initially connected to my computer, I can see it when I look on devices in my computer. However, when it finishes syncing it is no longer detected to my computer. I cannot transfer any of my songs to my new laptop because of this. I have tried to reinstall itunes, reset my ipod and use a different port. None of these things worked. Any ideas?
