Keeping my library whilst upgrading to Win 7

I am upgrading from vista to win 7 which will require a clean install.
at the moment I have everything working as i would like using 9.0.2.25 and a 120gb classic.
All of my music files are in one folder with relevant subdirectories for artist/album. ITunes is pointed to this folder for its 'media folder location'.
I do not have 'keep itunes media folder organised' or 'copy to itunes media folder when adding to library' checked.
Apart from making sure the whole music folder is backed up what else do i need to do. I have spent hours getting everything properly ordered with the correct artwork and don't want to have to start again!
Thanks
Jon

It's not quite so simple if you've split things up or never had them joined up. In the layout above, i.e. an iTunes folder containing an *iTunes Music/iTunes Media* folder the library works with the relative path from the main libray file to the media folder (this may not be strictly true but the effect is the same). If things are not in this layout then the library records the absolute path reference to each media file. If the absolute paths remain unchanged it may possible to move the library files into a location immediately above the top level music folder.
It might help if we can be clear exactly where things are now. Let's assume since you're using Vista that your Music is in C:UsersJonMusic C:UsersJonDocuments and your iTunes library is in C:UsersJonMusiciTunes. If this is the case I suggest that you copy the contents of the iTunes folder into C:UsersJon. Then click the icon to launch iTunes and immediately press & hold down the shift key until prompted to choose a library. Navigate to the *iTunes Library.itl* file in C:UsersJon and open it. iTunes will start and should display an "updating library" progress box for a while. When this finished check that you can play music.
You'll note that the iTunes window is now called Jon instead of iTunes. Close iTunes & wait for it to finish saving the library. Rename your original iTunes folder as *iTunes Old*. Create a new iTunes folder at C:UsersJonMusic and create a Music folder inside that. Move the library files, album artwork folder etc. from C:UsersJon into C:UsersJonMusiciTunes. Move the artist folders from C:UsersJonMusic C:UsersJonDocuments into C:UsersJonMusiciTunesMusic. Start iTunes & test.
If things stop working at any point you should be able to retrace your steps and get back to a working library. If this all sounds too complicated then you could always ceed control to iTunes and consolidate your library. This will copy everything outside of your iTunes folder into new folders inside your iTunes folder. Once completed you can delete the originals. Availible free space may preclude this action and it will put everything into the default iTunes folder structure which may or may not be to your taste.

  • Playlists Missing After Install New Hard Drive and Upgrade to Win 7

My computer needed a new hard drive and I upgraded from Win Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.
I am trying to get my Playlists back for my iTunes in my "Administrator" user account, after reinstalling iTunes and putting my music libraries back onto my computer.
(I had installed 32-bit Win7 OS myself, computer worked OK for about 1 day, then would not boot up; I took computer to shop, they said I needed new Hard Drive, and I gave them my new Win7 OS computer disks)
I am confused over whether I have 32-bit OS or 64-bit OS. They recommended installing 32-bit OS, I agreed, and believed that I had 32-bit OS installed; however, Computer / System Properties state "System type: 64-bit Operating System"
Prior to my installing Win7, I backed up the following onto my Western Digital "My Passport Essential Portable Hard Drive:"
("My Administrative Account"): Users / Owner / My Music
    and
("My User Account"): Users / Yank / My Music
My "Administrative" and "User" user accounts contain different songs in iTunes.
If helpful, I could describe what is in each of these 2 backed-up music folders.
To get started, I copied both my "Owner" and "Yank" user folders in the C: User folder; however now I have "Owner," "Yank," and "Yank.Owner-Toshiba" folders in the C: User folder. I think I did this by creating a new Yank user account by creating a new account, not by my copying a folder into C: User folder. The Owner folder has a picture of a lock on the folder icon.
Because I had trouble merging My Music folders in the Owner folder, and I was confused, I copied everything that was in the Owner folder into a new folder in the Owner folder, "NEW OWNER FOLDER." I also copied my Owner Music folder into several places in my Users / Owner folder.
I also ended up changing the "iTunes Media folder location" several times, using iTunes "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / change "iTunes Media folder location". When I chose "Reset," it shows "C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media"
I've also played around with "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' "
When I open my iTunes, I have no playlists.
However, when I went to my "Yank" user account and opened iTunes for the first time, the playlists associated with that account were visible.
How do I get my playlists back on my Administrative Account, which is my main song collection and had many, many playlists?
    Thank you.

    YAY!
I didn't try shift-start of iTunes, but I DID GET MY PLAYLISTS BACK BY FOLLOWING YOUR OTHER ADVICE:
I went to my external hard drive, went to my backup at Users / Owner / My Music / iTunes / and searched for library.itl
Four files with that name were found, with different dates.
I chose the most recent, dated just a few days before I made my backup to the external hard drive.
I copied it to my computer's hard drive into the following location:
    C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes
which overwrote the file which was located there.
When I opened iTunes, ALL MY WONDERFUL PLAYLISTS WERE THERE!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SOLVING THIS FOR ME!
CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW DISAPPOINTED I FELT WHEN I BELIEVED THAT I HAD LOST ALL OF THE PLAYLISTS WHICH I HAD CREATED OVER THE YEARS? Many of my playlists were composed of whole albums whose songs I had added to iTunes.
    THANK YOU AGAIN SO MUCH!

  • Help with transfer of music after upgrade to Win 7

I upgraded to Win 7 from Vista, which caused the loss of all my current files etc. I had a current backup (on a sep external HD as well as online) of my itunes before I did this, BUT I failed to consolidate the itunes.
Now I have nothing in my itunes but I have lots of folders under "my music" with subfolders including itunes again, itunes music, itunes media, previous itune libraries, etc, etc.
I'm really unclear, after reading several articles about recreating my library and moving my music and so on. Do I need to consolidate now? Would this help put everything where it is suppose to be?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In Windows 7 all the files in iTunes are now in separate folders in iTunes Media so you get mobile apps, music, movies, podcasts etc. I don't know how Vista files were structured but on XP you found movies and podcasts as folders within the music folder.
You can also have folders 'duplicated' in that they can also be visible within another folder. I unknowingly had my iTunes folder stored in both My Music and My Pictures.
Rather than consolidate from the Edit menu choose preferences, go to the Advanced tab. In the top box you will see the location of your files (in my case it is Music\iTunes\iTunes Media), tick 'Keep iTunes Media Folder Organised' and 'Copy files to iTunes Media when adding to library' which should ensure future files go to the right place (and I believe sorts the existing files out.)

  • After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer working

After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my  DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer recognizing discs. When I first put a disc in the drive runs for a bit and then stops. I've tried updating the driver but it says it has the most current driver. Under manage, it does not show any error codes and it says it is working correctly. I've looked at the regedit and it does not have any of upper and lower filters. I've tried disabling, rebooting, and reenabling. What am I missing? Another issue I've had since upgrading is that my network adapter needs reset several times a day in order to remain connected to wifi.

Since I have Yosemite on my iMac I can't view PDF files in Safari anymore.  It keeps telling me to upgrade my Adobe Reader, but it is the latest version.  Please help?  I don't have this problem on my Macbook that does not have Yosemite installed.

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
              Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
              Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • How to find my old aperture library after upgrade?

I recently updated my system to OSX 10.10, upon attempting to open aperture to view my photos, an info box came up saying my version of aperture was redundant and i should upgrade via the mac app store, I then tried to open the library through iPhoto and was given a message in the same tone (see screenshot 1).
I then purchased Aperture to upgrade the library and view all of my photos. Upon launching it did not give me an option to load the library in question, instead I was only given the option to load from the iPhoto library or to create a new library which, incidentally, was created as a REPLACEMENT to the existing library, in effect overwriting all of the data from my aperture library of five years with a new empty library.
No problem, I backed up the aperture library to ext HD but it is also refusing to open with the new aperture software (see screenshot 2).
How do I find the version of the library that was on the computer before it was replaced with the empty new one, it must be there as it was amounting to about 16 GB of photos, they cant just disappear?
    screenshot1
    screenshot 2

I then purchased Aperture to upgrade the library and view all of my photos.
If your Aperture version has been any version of Aperture 3, you are entitled to a free update. If the App Store is charging you, contact the App Store Support. Your email receipt should have a "Report a problem" link.
is there a way without time machine to find the library which was being used at the time of upgrade?
Did you keep your library in your Pictures folder? Check the sizes of all libraries you are seeing there. Sometimes an library will appear to be apparently empty, even if there are gigabytes of photos in them.
To find all libraries, or traces of them, search with Fnd Any File (http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php) as described by Old Toad at this link:
Re: Since I updated to iPhoto 9.5.1, my library is not listed or available. How can I find it? Can I use the time machine to restore it?
Download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the file name. These are files common to all versions of  iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

  • Do I need PSE Catalog to re-install after upgrade to Win 8.1?

I was running PSE 11 on Win 7.
    I did a PSE backup.
Upgraded from Win 7 to Win 8.1.
    Reinstalled PSE 11.
But I haven't started the app yet.
All of my photos are in the correct folders.
    I have the PSE backup.
What do I do next? If I start PSE can I get it to rebuild a new catalog by using the info in the backup?
Or is there a better approach?
I only use one catalog. I have about 9,000 pictures in it.
Thanks for any help or advice.

In the newly reinstalled PSE, open the organizer, use the catalog manager (menu File / catalogs...) and see if you have one or several catalogs; a new empty 'My catalog' may have been created, but the old one may still be there in the same default location.
If that does not work, after setting the explorer to show hidden folders, do an explorer search for files named : catalog.pse11db. You may find the old catalog if it has not been wiped in the Win update. Simply double click on that file which will open the organizer with the corresponding catalog.
If you don't find such files, in the catalog manager choose the 'restore backup' option and restore to original location and keeping the folder structure.

  • Will my F-Secure security product keep working when I upgrade to Windows 10?

QuestionWill my F-Secure security product keep working when I upgrade to Windows 10?
AnswerYes. All supported versions (12.1 or newer) of F-Secure security products are automatically migrated when you upgrade from Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. However, there are two conditions that may result in Windows 10 to remove your F-Secure application:
If you are upgrading from Windows Vista or earlier to Windows 10, all applications are removed. You will then need to reinstall your F-Secure security product manually after the upgrade.
If you are upgrading from Windows 7, 8, or 8.1, F-Secure security product might get removed depending if you do not have the supported version of F-Secure installed. You will then need to reinstall your F-Secure security product manually after the upgrade.
Note: Make sure that you download the latest version of our product when reinstalling the product on Windows 10.

You will likely find that drivers are not readily available for Windows 10 on HP site. When Windows 8 was released it was a slow process rolling out drivers and many early adopters were not happy. I agree with  -wait for a few months at least. Check your models support page for release of Win 10 drivers also before deciding.

can't open my photo library after upgrading to iphoto 11.  Is it possible to download iphoto 9.0.1 after installing '11.  Have followed all the other instructions and am in a loop which doesn't allow me to access iphoto or my photos.

when iphoto wouldnt open we read the trouble shooting info and it said that we may have needed to download 9.0.1 if we had an older version.  We obviously didn't download it before the upgrade and wondered if it would cause problems or indeed solve the problem if we downloaded it now!
When we try to open iphoto is says:
To open your library with this version of iphoto it first needs to be prepared
To prepare the library use the iphoto library upgrader available from Apple.
We have downloaded this twice now and it still sends us this message when we try to open iphoto.

  • Missing files - corrupt library after upgrade to 11.1.4

I updated iTunes to 11.1.4, and after launching, it looked like it was updating my library as it's done in the past.  However, this time, after an hour I realized it had not yet completed, and a dialogue box asking about creating an iTunes U playlist was on the screen.  I tried to do so, but it just kept repeating.  So finally I stopped it, and now I have an file marked iTunes library (damaged) and an incomplete library.  I am missing thousands of songs compared to the last .itl I have in Previous iTunes Libraries.
I thought when iTunes did an upgrade to the library it was supposed to make a backup? If so, and I did the upgrade yesterday, why is the most recent file in Previous iTunes Libraries dated from four months ago?
How can I repair the damaged .itl file, as the one iTunes is using now as, as I mentioned, missing thousands of songs now.
Is there any sort of script or utility I can use to figure out exactly which files are missing from the current .itl in my library?
    Thanks in advance.

No, you need to do the backup as part of regular computer maintenance and before you do any software upgrades.  iTunes moves the old library into the previous library area but perhaps your update failed before it did that.

Yes, there's one on the Dougscripts web site that will crawl through a library.  In yur case it's probably just as easy to drag the whole iTunes media folder to Automatically Add to iTunes.  Anything already in the library it will ignore.  Anything not there it will add.
