Keeping my Retina MacBook Pro safe in my dorm.

I have a retina MacBook Pro and was wondering how to keep it safe in my dorm room. The rMBP doesnt have a lock on it like the other MacBooks so I was looking for suggestions. I know buying a safe is an option but I figured I would ask.

  • Mid-2012 retina macbook pro nvidia gpu panics

I bought my mid-2012 retina macbook pro in September 2012. It is 8 months out of warranty. I always look after it and use it carefully. Since 2 weeks ago, I encountered the problems below,
1.turn into black screen after running for about 15 mins, but the system is still running because the keyboard is still functional. After reboot, i record the log as below, it shows that it is a GPU Panic.
    2. display would not turn on after pressing the power button but can still hear the apple start up chime and the system keep running with the screen
    off.
    3. after erased the hard drive and re-installed Mavericks. Under a new installed system, it can run normally for about 1 day, after that especially after a shut down or restart, the problems above came back.
I am currently working in Thailand but I have no plan to go back to the US in a short period of time. I brought the laptop to the local apple service, they said it is certainly the logic board or GPU failure and the parts need to be replaced. The cost of the replacement is around half of the price that I paid for this laptop. I feel really disappointed so I called apple telephone service if there is anything that they can help. However, instead of helping me allocate the cause of these problems, the suggestion I received is to buy a new Mac Book and accept the fact that I am just unlucky in this case. This is the first time in my life to encounter mother board or GPU failure excluding artificial damage, they are supposed to be reliable espeically under the name of Apple. It is just so hard for me to accept it.
Below is the system message of the problem, it would be much appreciated if anyone can give me some suggestion that can help me to fix my problem at the lowest cost. Thank you very much.

Just started getting these too. The only workaround I've found online is disable the discrete graphics card using gfxCardStatus. I can't use my multiple monitors when using just the integrated graphics card, but it's allowed me to limp along until I have time to get into an Apple Store.

  • How can I do a clean installation of Mavericks 10.9.1 on Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro

Hi I need some help -
I bought a late 2013 15' Retina Macbook Pro and it was shipped with 10.9.0 build number 13A3017.
Now 10.9.1 is out, and I wanted to download the full installation image and burn it to thumb drive and do a full clean re-installation.
But I just found Mac App Store doesn't allow me to download the full 5.29GB installation image from https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x...ks/id675248567, and my current 10.9.0 can only be _upgraded_ to 10.9.1 with the 395MB incremental update package from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1712, this upgrade package is described as "It includes all updates from OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 plus system specific enhancements to improve the stability and compatibility of your Mac."
So maybe the full 5.29GB 10.9.1 which is available on Mac App Store is not compatible with the 2013 15' Late Retina Macbook Pro?
I just downloaded the upgrade package from Mac App Store and now I'm running 10.9.1 build number 13B3116 fine.
So my questions here: I really would like to do a clean full re-installation of 10.9.1. Where can I get the full installation image which is compatible with 2013 15' Late Retina Macbook Pro?

There is a way to get yourself a fully functional install file for a Late 2013 model.
    1. Format a USB stick
    2. Reboot the Mac, and hold down CMD-R to get into recovery mode
    3. Start a new installation and choose the USB stick as a target. You should be able to choose your normal hard drive as a target, too, because as long as the installer package is downloaded, no data should be erased, but when you decide to use a USB stick, you're on the safe side.
    4. The Mac will be downloading the install package. This takes a while, the time remaining shown is not correct. If you need to have an idea how long it will take you, choose the log from the help menu during download, it will show you how many chunks are already downloaded (it was 504 chunks total for me).
    5. When the download is ready, the Mac reboots automatically, pull the USB stick when it does. If you're not before your computer when this happens, don't worry, when you come back, you will be in the setup program. Just switch your machine off by pressing the power switch for more than 10 seconds, and then pull the stick.
    6. On the stick you will find the "OS X Install ESD.dmg". Copy that file to your Mac (it's the only file you'll need from the stick. After that, you can reformat the stick and use it for the next step).
    7. You can use this file to finally create a bootable USB stick if you follow the instructions that you can find anywhere on the net or in this forum.

  • Install Windows 8 on Retina Macbook Pro

    Greetings,
I have a Retina Macbook Pro and is wanting to install Windows 8 on it, because some games aren't available for the Mac. So I was wondering if Apple has finished updating the Mac so that it could run Windows 8 properly? Is it safe to install Windows 8 on my Mac?
Thanks for the help in advance.

Boot Camp isn't compatible with Windows 8 at the moment. However, some new Macs have got a special OS X version with a Boot Camp Assistant version that mentions Windows 8, but Apple hasn't released Boot Camp drivers for Windows 8, so you have to wait for the next update, 10.8.3.
If you want to use Windows now, install Windows 7. Also, it will work better than Windows 8 on your Mac. I'm referring to the Modern UI, because you may be uncomfortable with this interface

  • New Retina MacBook Pro does not find WiFi after booting

My Retina MacBook Pro keeps looking for WiFis after it has booted, but does not find any.
I have to explicitly turn WiFi off and on again after booting to get it working.
When I put the MacBook to sleep and wake it, the problem does not occur.
Any hints what could be the problem?

Not sure if this will help, but you can go into System Preferences > Network and, if you haven't already, create a new location (mine is called "home"), then from this location remove all connection methods from the left column except Wi-Fi. Also, click on "Advanced" and remove anything from the Preferred Networks list that you aren't using. Then click on "OK" and "Apply".

  • Retina Macbook Pro late 13

Just got a new retina macbook pro and it is having trouble playing youtube videos. some have played fine but others keep skipping and eventually fail all together. This is in addition to the fact that the entire system froze up a couple of times on me and I am not quite sure why. It told me that it "sent the problem to apple" but I am not sure what they do with that information (diagnose/ treat/?). I payed 2300 for this otherwise very nice computer but these breakdowns are agrivating.
I have looked online and it seems there are many of us out there that have experienced this freezing (as well as some others that have had trouble with youtube)
I have an old white 09 macbook that is working better than my brand new macbook pro.
Is the problem the new operating system?  I hope Apple comes up with a fix.

Sometimes, reinstalling OS X fixes issues like this. I haven't had any issues with a mid-2012 rMBP running either Mountain Lion or Mavericks.
So, you can restart into the Recovery HD by pressing/holding the Command+R keys. Then select Reinstall OS X from the OS X Utilities Menu. Reinstalling the OS on top of itself will not harm your data or apps. Neither are touched. Back up your system first if you decide to reinstall the OS.

  • Retina Macbook Pro sudden OSX issues

Hello guys, my retina macbook pro is driving me insane....
The computer will -simply- not execute a lot of my instructions, orders, or it simply -lol- ignores me. (skynet much?)
Anyway, it really is bothering me and here is a rundown of issues I have -so far- experienced
    a) No control over resolution. I keep changing the resolution to "best for retina" but when I reboot , the system just doesnt care and changes the resolution to "more space".
    b) No control over login items. No matter what changes I make, removing entirely the programs using the "minus" icon (not just unticking the items), it never makes a change when I reboot the computer. It still lists all the items I removed.
    c) Finder boots up every time the computer is on and with the applications folder poping up. I tried removing the finder.plist from the preferences but it doesnt matter the computer still pops up the applications folder when I boot up.
    d) I cannot even change the desktop background and make the option stick after a reboot. I choose another desktop and everything seems alright, then I reboot, and it switches back to the one it is "stuck" with.
    e) Iphoto needs to repair the library every time I open the application.... no matter what...
    f) I noticed that the system and specifically the kernel task is taking up much more ram than before. With a fresh boot my computer normally had 6.20 GB of free Ram available and kernel took up about 700MB. Now when I boot, the free memory has droped to around 5.40GB free and kernel takes up about 1.20 GB
I tried reseting the PRAM and SMC but without success.
Any help will be really appreciated, I know all things must be connected to each other, there must be a single reason that causes all this mess, probably a preferences file or system file... anyone can help me because this really drives me insane and I really dont want to go through all this reinstalling ML thing....

I am logged in as admin. I deleted some preference files for the login and now I do have control over login items, yet the rest of the issues still persist.
I am repairing permissions and yet no problem has been found. Only an ACL thing that was repaired as it says.

  • Retina macbook pro with thunderbolt display causes speaker issues

I have a thunderbolt display and used the speakers fine on old macbook pro. I now plug in my new retina macbook pro 15" with mountain lion and the sound plays fine for a while then starts to crackle real bad and then stops all together. If I switch the the laptop speakers then switch back after 30 or so minutes the thunderbolt speakers will work again for a short amount of time then again crackle and stop.
This may be mountain lion related but I have tried another non-retina version macbook pro with mountain lion and did not notice the issue but it was only for an hour or so. So this leads me to belive its the computer.
Any suggestions? its really really anoying and wasting my time trying to fix it.

I have the exact same issue. I hauled the TB Display into the Apple Store 3 times and finally they replaced it. Come to find out this new one has the same issue still. So It has to be rMBP related at this point. Unfortunately I don't think I have it under warranty still and the issue is hard to demonstrate. I recorded videos of it but every time I go into the store and plug it is the same as switching the speakers from internal to external and it takes 30-60 mins before it degrates to scratching sounds.
Please let me know if you ever foudn a solution. Im going to try to keep taking it in until I can get this resolved.

  • New Retina MacBook Pro Updates...

    Hi everyone.
i Have a new 2014 Retina MacBook Pro (13inch). Everything works great, but in noticed in the last 2 weeks, the App Store has 4 updates waiting for me:
    Keynote (6.2.2)
    Numbers (3.2.2)
    Pages (5.2.2)
    iMovie (10.0.5)
However, these updates have already been installed. And even if I download the updates, the keep reappearing over and over. When I close out App Store, and check each of the above app versions, they are up to date and the same version the App Store wants to update.
Anyone else have this issue? Can I skip these updates .i.e. turn off somehow?

  • My 2013 15" retina macbook pro screen has a yellow tint, should i ask for a replacement?

So yesterday i got my retina macbook pro 15 " and right away i noticed my worst fear ( since i previously had read some similar stories) my screen has a noticeable yellow tint specially on white tones, websites have a "newspaper look " to them, since i bought this computer because im starting web design in university in a couple of months i would say i'm pretty much ******, people say i shoud just calibrate it, but most people dont calibrate their screen, so it would be  a mess, my work would look good on my computer but ****** on other's people computer
I'm very surprised because i thought this issue only affected the initial batch of retina macbook pros, but i checked my serial online and my computer was made in January 2013 so its quite new, the panel is a Samsung "LSN154YL01001.
I have read that usually LG panels don't suffer as much from the yellow tint but they suffered from Image retention, is it stil like this? what do you think i should do should i keep this computer with the samsung screen or get apple to give me a new one hopefully with a LG panel or at least a samsung without yellow tint

Actually MOST People that work in all parts of the Design field DO Calibrate their screens. It is the only way to make sure what you are looking at on your computer screen will be the same on other design professionals screens and to the general public.
Wherever you got the notion that Design professionals and or design schools of all types don't calibrate their screens is completely incorrect.
So it is up to you whether you calibrate or not and or to return that Retina for one that has a better color balanced screen from the start. Along with that the new unit you get may have other problems as the Retina models are plagued with random problems. The screens only be one of them.

  • Retina Macbook Pro 13" on Windows 8 Wifi Stops Receiving Data

    Hello!
I am running a Retina Macbook Pro 13" with Windows 8 Bootcamp. Recently I have discovered that my laptop internet stops working. When I boot it up in windows I will be able to use the internet for an average of around 30 seconds before it stops loading pages but it is still connected to the network. The only way I can actually use the internet is if I keep reconnnecting to my WiFi network every minute or so.
Can anyone help me with this issue?

I'm having a similar issue on my brand new MacBook Pro Retina 15". Internet seems to run fine on my windows side, but when I bootcamp into Windows 7, using my ethernet adapter, downloads seem to only get between 80mb-200mb done before it just stops, and I have to restart. I can browse the internet completely fine (and quickly) but downloading large files seems to cause an issue.
I had to download a Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet driver to get the adapter to work, and I'm wondering if perhaps I have the wrong driver? It's weird that it works though....I also downloaded 7.5GB of Team Fortress 2 seemingly fine the first night, but I think thats because Steam is able to force a reconnect even if it stops working.
Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

  • Issues with sleep/wake with 2014 retina Macbook pro

    Hello everyone,
I have lately been noticing some issues with my 2014 13" retina macbook pro when sleeping and waking. As soon as my laptop goes into sleep while I am using I move the mouse around from the track pad to wake it back up. When i do that it takes the latop around 2 mins to get the login screen up where i put in my password to log on. The screen stays blank for 2 mins and I am just sitting around waiting to log back in. Is anyone else having this issue with there 2014 retina macbook pros? Anyone know of any fixes? I have just updated my laptop to Mavericks 10.9.3 and the issue are still there.

I upgraded my early 2011 MBP to 16 gigs with Crucial. My machine would not sleep properly, because when I tried to wake it, it would wake from its hibernate image file. This is the issue I've seen here in this list.
I tried all the suggestions I saw on these groups. Nothing helped. I contacted Crucial, who suggested that if their RAM was defective, they'd replace it per their warranty process. I needed some proof it was their RAM causing the problem.
I put the original 8 gigs RAM back in the machine (2 4 gig sticks), and it behaved normally. I then put one stick of Crucial RAM in, all by itself. The machine behaved normally. I put the other stick of Crucial RAM back in, and took the first one out. The machine would not properly sleep and wake from sleep. This proved that one stick was causing the problem, and the other was not.
    Defective RAM!
I then requested and received an RMA from Crucial to send the defective RAM back. They paid shipping. I got new sticks of RAM about a week later. These new sticks of RAM work properly. No sleep issues.
I'm surprised and disappointed to say that this is not the first time I've received defective RAM from Crucial. I've purchased from them for years, and had GREAT service and received high quality products. The past couple years my experience has been different.
I'm still pretty steamed about this, as I spent a great deal of time trying to diagnose the problem and fix it. I don't really have that kind of time to waste. My expectation was that their RAM was high quality, and unlikely to be at fault.
Perhaps this is just a bad batch of RAM. I get that. I can forgive them once. But this has happened twice in the past three years. I'll look elsewhere for my next memory purchase.
Keep in mind that their customer ratings are generally very high. My experience is probably  isolated.

  • Retina Macbook Pro with Mavericks freezes

So ever since I upgraded to OS X Mavericks I've been having a really annoying issue. Usually around once a day (or every couple of days) my computer will freeze. First usually one program freezes (like Google Chome or Microsoft Word) and then when I open up the Force Quit window other applications will start freezing (as well as the Force Quit window itself!) and after a little bit my entire computer is just frozen. I've found that the only way to fix this issue is to force my computer to restart by holding down the power button. I've tried writing to Apple about this (multiple times!) but haven't gotten a single response. If you have any ideas on what might be causing this or how I could try fixing it that would be greatly appreciated.
If it helps, I have a 2012 15-inch Macbook Pro with Retina Display.
    Thanks in advance!

Wow this is weird...The only real thing we have in common are the freezing and the operating system. Sometimes if I leave it for 10 or 20 minutes it'll unfreeze and pretend nothing happened, but usually I have to hit the power button.
I have a brand new (Nov 2013) retina macbook pro, 13 inch, and it came with mavericks pre-installed. I don't have any Microsoft products installed. It freezes so randomly that I don't see any pattern with apps that I have open.
I figured it was just a buggy version and apple would fix it soon. But still waiting.
Have you tried a fresh reinstall? If this keeps up I might try that.
Does you keyboard freeze up? I just noticed that the back-lighting on the keyboard of my laptop doesn't go on during the freeze. I guess that means the keyboard has no power to do anything about the freeze.
I noticed in your shot of your screen, microsoft word wasn't giving you any problems...only the native apple apps.
Here's one of my freezes. What a beauty eh?
EDIT*** I tried pasting an image but didn't show up after posting this reply...oh well, It was similar to your one.

  • HELP! Retina Macbook Pro Late 2012 vs Late 2013

Hey guys, faced with a dilemma here and looking for some help
So, I am able to buy a Late 2012 retina MBP with the upgraded 2.9ghz i7, 8GB of RAM, and 500SSD. Seller is asking $1450, I think I can get it for $1400.
Now, the new Late 2013 retina Macbook Pro was just released as you all must know.
The Base model has a 2.4ghz i5 haswell chip, 4gb ram, and 128gb Pcie-based flash storage.
It retails for $1349 in Canada, and I think they have a student discount of $100, so with taxes in i'd be looking at around $1400 as well.
I think both computers will have more than enough power/space for my needs, although I want make sure I buy the best value/ will have the best resale value in the future.
What do you guys think? Is the Late 2013 rMBP upgrade a huge difference, and a must have in this situation?
    Help would be appreciated
    Thanks!

Thank you for your response! No actually, they are both the 13 inch models.
Specs wise though, do you think I will notice a difference between the two, if I am not using too heavy applications?
I will be majoring in Computer Science next year, so that's something im trying to keep in mind too.
I just read here in the discussion that the new retinas are having freezing issues as well. Hmm..
Might just hold off to make a decision..

  • Photoshop CS5.1 Won't Load Images On Screen at retina MacBook pro.

Photoshop CS5.1 Won't Load Images On Screen at retina MacBook pro. Any help? Thanks!

I'm surprised that Apple would attempt such a "hack" design...  Switching graphics adapters mid-stream is no small task, and I can't imagine that they could ever make it work seamlessly.
Keep in mind that the nature of the complex GPU beast is that graphics hardware doesn't all work the same (or right) and application software has to make decisions about what to do and what not to do, and even when to invoke certain workarounds - or it would never be possible to run on multiple platforms.
Yes, that seems wrong, but it's necessary and it makes developing cutting-edge graphics applications in the real world much more expensive.
The decisions aren't re-made by an application all the time - that would slow things down terribly.  Instead, often the run-time environment is characterized at application startup and the features remembered for later use.  Modern applications actually even create programs (e.g., shaders or OpenCL programs) to run on specific GPU hardware, and they have to be compiled - something usually done by the application at startup.
Now imagine that someone changes the capabilities of the graphics hardware completely after the application has started - even from one vendor's implementation to another (Intel to nVidia).
Like I said, I'm surprised a reasonable system designer could ever think that swapping GPUs at run-time could be made to work.  At least Apple allows you to turn it off!
Does Apple offer any "geek-level" configuration options that can force the use of a particular GPU for a given application?  It seems that this could be an automated workaround that would allow a given application to see only one GPU, which is what Photoshop appears to need here.
