Keeping number of files in check is good for your Mac

I just did what I thought was impossible - reduced the space on my hard drive from 2.6GB to 11GB! The Mac is flying again, hard drive is hardly audible, I am not missing anything useful, all the projects with roughs from stage 1 through 40 have been consolidated into a few examples, copies and back-ups of copies for "just in case" during a project have gone, and gems of ideas have been organised properly into present and future projects.
I may sound like a totally disorganised worker, but not really, I can quickly find what I need, didnt really come across anything I had no recollection of, but I just fell into the trap of "whatever the size of your bin the rubbish will accumulate accordingly".
So now I have 28GB of pure hard drive data to clone to a wiped external drive and I am looking forward to being able to back up incrementally with quality files instead of dross for that rainy day.
It makes me wonder how much useless data other people are struggling long with, and is the upcoming trend for unlimited storage with Google and Amazon S3 services really needed?

lfdc:
Good for you. Getting rid of un-needed material is an excellent way to free up disk capacity. And backing up to an external FW HDD or archiving on CD or DVD, conserves more space. The graphic interface permits quite sophisticated filing systems so that even if one has a lot of data is can be organized in a way so it can be easily accessed. For example I have on major folder called DATA, in which I have nested folders, one of which e.g. is Financial. In this I have other Folders such as Taxes, Investments etc. The investment folder can is further broken into the Brokerage firms, and each of those in individual accounts, and each account with Bought and Sold for transaction statements. In this way, even with large masses of data it is easily accessible if you know exactly where it should be. Of course, every now and then something gets saved in the wrong place and that breaks the monotony trying to find it.
Incidentally, in your first sentence you said,"reduced the space on my hard drive from 2.6GB to 11GB!" I think you meant it the other way around (I hope).
Good luck.

  • Whats the check box good for?

    Greetings!
I'm on a Monday roll. I got bit by a context menu so far so now lets try the check box.
I've always been under the impression that the check box was an include/exclude thing its either on or off.
Instance I was trying to burn a cd from a playlist and it went over. So I would un-check boxes for items in the list and try to re-burn the cd. Even after clearly it telling me I had less time and space itunes was still trying to burn the 'unchecked' items.
So .... what are the check boxes good for?? I'm sure I'm going to feel really dumb when the answer is presented.
Thanks for your time .. on a ridiculous question!
    Dave

*I guess I haven't put enough thought into creating a playlist to contain every song I would like to play at a given time.*
By checking/unchecking songs, you alreay are doing it, except instead of having them in a neat, tidy playlist or two, you have the whole library to go thru.
    Here's how I do it.
It's very simple to get new music and my favorites onto the iPod, once set it up.
    I have a few playlist I sync.
One is a regular playlist (iPod Music) with all the music I always want on my iPod.
I also create a smart playlist.
    The criteria are.
    Match all rules;
Playlist is not iPod music (this keeps from selecting songs I already have)
My rating is not 1 star (keeps off stuff I rate one star)
Have not heard in last two weeks (rotates older music)
Limit selection to 2GB by Random (the size is set to the iPod total size minus iPod music playlist size).
Then I select the iPod, click the Music tab.
Tick Sync music and choose Selected playlists in the drop down.
    Tick the two playlists above.
I add/delete from the iPod Music playlist to always sync this music.
Once a week or so, depending on how much I have listened to the iPod, select the smart playlist.
Select all the songs and press Delete. Since it's a smart playlist, it will automatically fill up again with new music based on the criteria.
    Then I sync the iPod.
(I really gotta start a blog with this info in it since I type it a bunch...)

  • Tried unsuccessfully to restore my MBP, running the Mac OSX Lion, to factory settings. I keep getting the "can't download additional components for the Mac OSX Lion" error when reinstalling the OSX Lion. Any tips on how to resolve this problem?

Hello! Tried unsuccessfully to restore my MBP, running the Mac OSX Lion, to factory settings. I keep getting the "can't download additional components for the Mac OSX Lion" error when reinstalling the OSX Lion. Any tips on how to resolve this problem?

    Hi
Given that your answer to 1. is 'pre-installed' and 3. is 'No', I think the only thing to do is to take it to an Apple store (ideally the one you bought it from) and have them reinstall it for you.
The intended solution in cases like yours is that you should be able to reboot and install even a wiped disk by using Apple's servers over the internet (you do this by restarting with 'command-r' and choosing 'reinstall Lion'). However if this isn't working for you then you need to get the store to do it. Don't let them fob you off with 'go home and try again'. Have them do it in the shop (you're still covered by Applecare warranty so it should cost you nothing save the inconvenience of the trip and possibly leaving the machine there while they fix it).
A reinstall should leave all your own personal data and programs in place.
Note for future: when you get it fixed, first thing to do is buy a cheap external drive and start keeping a backup (either Time Machine or clone with Carbon Copy Cloner).

  • Is IPNetSentry still good for a Mac in 2012?

Is IPNetSentry still good for a Mac in 2012?

Actually, iMovie/iDVD should create excellent DVDs! They're terrific programs -- and Final Cut Express is also excellent, if a bit hard to learn.
I've been seguing from using Premiere Elements on my PC to using it on my iMac, and I love it on Mac! Premiere Elements 9 runs very well on my computer running Snow Leopard.
I'd definitely recommend downloading the trial and giving it a test drive.

  • Maximum number of files supported in a folder for FileTable feature

    Hi,
I have implemented a solution using SQL 2012 FileTable with an expected workload of 150K files a year. File's size is not that big, just a few KB EDI file but I am wondering what is supported/recommended limit of number of files in a folder for FileTable?
    Thanks

The theoretical limit is the NTFS volume limit. This is provided in the below article.
    NTFS Physical Structure
However the practical limit depends on your application and business scenario. You can read about FILESTREAM and FileTable internals and about performance considerations from the below excellent article

  • Are there any recommendations for virus checking/removal programs for the Mac?

Is there any recommendations for virus checking/removal programs for the iMac and MacBrook Pro running OS 10.6.7?

as has been said, you need no AV on your Mac. more info here: Mac Virus/Malware Info.
if, however, you exchange files with windows users on a regular basis, you might want to install ClamXav lest you pass an infected file on without realizing it.

  • Is this RAM good for my Mac Mini?

Mini is the 2.3 GHz i5 (mid 2011). I've currently got the 2 gb RAM that came with it. Will upgrading to 8 gb make it a heck of a lot faster or not a huge difference? Also, will upgrading to 4 gb or 8 gb be better, or is there like a cap where once you go above the amount of RAM it doesn't really affect the Mac.
Here is the one I'm thinking of buying
    http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0374837
Will that work on my mini?
    Thanks.

With a mid-2011 mini,  assume you have Lion installed. Many have reported that 2GB, which is the Lion minimum, is enough to turn the lights on but not enough to get any real performance out of Lion. 4GB seems to be the practical amount of memory to have a reasonably capable Lion system. Beyond that, it depends, as noted above, on what you run.  So, 2GB to 4GB in a Lion system you may see some real performance improvements.  4GB to 8GB and any benefit will depend on what and how much you run.
I like Crucial memory, as I've used it for years in a number of systems with no issues. 8GB for your mini is $46.  They are at http://www.crucial.com . They have free shipping in the US, and you can usually find a 5% off coupon on retailmenot.com. Another source is OWC at http://www.macsales.com. They sell Samsung as well as their own branded memory, and have a good reputation. I've bought Samsung memory from them, again with no issues.

  • How do I import multiple Ai files into one Indesign File - whilst still keeping the Ai Files editable and up dateable for the one Indesign File?

    Hi All,
Im relatively new to Ai and Indesign, and have been doing Uni work over Christmas, and have a rather urgent question thats stressing me out.
I originally had many art boards in my ai file, but due to the number, I split these into single files to help my computer run better.
Now I want to organise them into one document to save. From searching online Indesign can import these and save as one file, yet automatically update if the original ai file is updated. I would like to do this but just don't know how to do this correctly?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Im using CC Ai and indesign.
    Thanks in advance
    Sam

Yes, effectively I would like to catalogue the files into one collection so i can save as one PDF and Print as one.:)
I know I could save each AI as a pdf them then merge the pdf's together in acrobat, but I have nearly 100 files so would feel more comfortable seeing them all together before print / saving.
My concern is that if I insert them in Ai, will the file resolution reduce? and will the ai still be editable and would it update the indesign file?
    Thanks for the quick reply

  • Imessage on Mac has my wifes phone number and its greyed out and i cant change it to my number (on the beta version of iMessage for the mac)

hey-- so iMessage on ONE computer has my wifes phone number in under iMessage and its greyed out and i cant change it to my number.  any ideas?  ive done what people have suggested on these forums, e.g., check your apple id make sure your number is associated with it etc.  how do i change the iMessage number from my wifes to my actual number?  thanks! R

    HI,
This can depend on the the Apple ID that is used.
I was under the impression that the invididual parts of an iCloud ID could be "registered" separately for iMessages but this may not be correct.
I have an Apple ID that is based on a email from a source external to Apple. (an old Dial-up account email)
I registered this for iCloud and at the time got an @me.com name as well.
I also have two iPhones so I decided to use the @me.com name on one iPhone and the older Dial-up on the other.
This seemed to work up to the OS X10.8.2 and iOS 6 updates.
AT this points I did the OS X one first then the iPhones
I got alerts in Messages on the Mac to add the Dial-up ID iPhone's number to Messages which I accepted.
The Messages Menu > Accounts > iMessages showed the iPhone Number as an alternative Receive ID and offered itself in the Drop as the Send from ID.
I then set up the second iPhone and got an alert in Messages to add the Apple ID and the iPhone number to Messages.
    I said no to this.
At iOS 6 this did not get added to the Messages > Preferences > Accounts > iMessage panel.
However at iOS 6.0.2 the iPhones are showing their own Numbers as Greyed out  and even though I refused again the @me.com ID and second iPhone's Number they have been added to the Message Menu > Preferences > Accounts > iMessages pane although they are not ticked.
The only link these two Apple ID Names have is that they are both associated with the iCloud Account.
(I Can log in to the same iTunes account with either name, and post here, and access iCloud in a web browser - the password is the same).
I have successfully managed to get one iPhone to have it's greyed out Number ticked so it can accept iMessages sent to the Number.
This involved removing the Apple ID on that iPhone, Closing iMessages, restarting iMessages and then re-adding the Apple ID
I did get an alert to say the ID  would not work anywhere in iMessages when removing it.
It was 24 hours before I got an alert in Messages again to add the iPhone Number and Apple ID (I said no and they are not active but do show in the iMessage account on the Mac)
I am a little confused by this bit:-
...ONE computer has my wife's phone number in under iMessage and its greyed out ...
I can see the iPhone Numbers in Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts >iMessages Account pane but they are not greyed out even when not active
They are only greyed out on the iPhone's themselves.
I would also make sure the Apple IDs used on each computer and it's related iPhone are separate from each other.

  • AirPort Express vs Extreme.  Is this a solution?  My wife wants to be able to access files on her hard drive for our Mac by way of a laptop from anywhere in the house.  For example, she would like access her $ software from any computer in house.

Will one of these work to use software from iMac on any laptop wirelessly around the house?  Which would be better Express or Extreme?

I've had much better luck with Express rather than the Extreme.

  • What is stealth mode and is it good for your computer

what is stealth mode can you please help me i just found it through my firewall and i am scared about it

Stealth Mode just means that the computer will not respond to a "ping" or similar network enquiries. This means that anyone trying to communicate with your computer will not receive any reply.
It will not harm your computer to turn it on, but it may adversely affect any networking programs which you use. I would turn the firewall on, but leave Stealth Mode off unless you really know you need it.
