Keeping old emails in my inbox

I just looked in my inbox for an old email and it was gone! I did find it on spotlight but is there anyway I can just keep my old emails in the inbox after I've read them? I have looked through this forum but I can't seem to find my answer. I did find that someone had 6,000 emails in her box, but I don't know how to set my Mail up that way.
I have AOL and hotmail mailboxes.
help please!
ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

This is an AOL issue, not a Mail issue. Contrary to what others have said here, there is no setting in Mail that could have a bearing on this. It’s not that the messages disappear from Mail. It’s that they disappear from the server because AOL (not Mail) removes them from there. Since the account is IMAP, messages disappear from Mail as a result of Mail synchronizing with the server.
AOL automatically purges your mail from the server after some time. There is nothing you can do about it other than maybe specifying a greater number of days somewhere in AOL’s (not Mail) settings and moving/copying your messages somewhere else to avoid losing them. You can create custom local “On My Mac” mailboxes in Mail, for example, and move/copy your mail there manually or set up rules to do it automatically.
Also, AOL doesn’t let mail clients create or manage mailboxes at the root level of the account directory on the server, which means you should turn Store messages on the server OFF for all the mailboxes in Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors, so that those mailboxes are stored locally instead.
You may also want to read the following article. It’s somewhat outdated, but still useful to understand how AOL’s IMAP access works:

Winston - thank you for your reps but that is common sense... Icloud only displays 50 emails at a time. So your recommendation doesn't work if you have 330,000 emails in your inbox. I am looking for a way to do a mass move.. Like a filter or rule that runs in the inbox. Current rules can only work as emails arrive.
    Any other thoughts?

  • Why does Mail keep reloading old emails into my inbox as if they are new?

Ill be doing homework at like 2-3am and all of the sudden Mail will say I have 157 new emails in my inbox. When I go look at them, it just reloads all the messages in my gmail inbox into my Mail inbox. To prevent it from happening I have to keep moving my gmail messages into folders. Is there anyway to fix this?? Maybe it is the way I have it set up??? Someone please help, it happens like 3 times a week at least and is super annoying!!!

    Travis,
You have posted in the Mail & AB forum for Leopard, and not Snow Leopard, and the system info posting below any of your responses reports 10.5.6 -- you should correct the latter.
For some using Snow Leopard and using Time Machine, this has been leading edge issue, and one that hopefully will be dealt with by the next update to SL. What seems to happen with Mail 4.x and use of Time Machine, is that the file that in normal use prevents duplicate downloads gets restored to an old version, and thus Mail does not know it has downloaded the messages previously. Purging the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3 file will cure briefly (after enduring one more download of all messages on the server, but the problem will return because of Time Machine. Are you using Time Machine?
As for housekeeping, if you quit Mail, and then shut down your laptop (or maybe even if only putting it to sleep by closing the lid), then Mail housekeeping tasks, which include keeping the index up-to-date do not get finished, and then can be problems. Now that I know you are using Snow Leopard, I am less suspicious of that.

  • How to keep old email messages from downloading on new iphone?

I just got an iphone5 and linked it to my google email account.  I use Outlook for managing my emails on my computer and have very few emails in the inbox, but my iphone is trying to download 30,000 emails from my main google account.  How do I stop it?

ayushrathi thank you for the suggestion.  Unfortunately the mail days to sync option was not there.  I'm not sure why not because it should be.
I don't mind deleting most of the gmail messages in that inbox, but I can only find a way to either delete all or only 100 at a time.  I would like to be able to delete only those dated more than 90 days old.

  • Old emails not in inbox any longer?

    Hi,
I can no longer access all the old(er) emails in my Yahoo account:
The furtherst back I can go is 10 pages and that takes me back to July 2012, however I have had an account for 4 years and I really need to access an email from earlier this year.
I can't find them anywhere and don't know what to do. Can anyone shed some light on the matter where are they, where do older emails go? Why aren't they there!? They can't just have dissapeared or be deleted by yahoo surely? I have unlimited space so I expect to be able to see all the emails I've ever recieved and not just recent ones...
I tried contacting technical support but there was a language problem and adviser couldn't unerstand my question and couldn't offer any help!!! very frustrating.
I can see old emails if I search a particluar anem/ word but can't remember who this email was from and just want to scroll back- I know I used to be able to do this so where have they gone??

I haven't got Firefox- is there not something I can do to just locate them in my inbox? Has something change with the BT mail?
The technical dept at BT were extremely unhelpfu.
What has Firefox got to do with it?
Are you sure that you did not use a POP3 mail client like Outlook Express in the past, which simply downloaded them and deleted them from the mail server?

  • Old email dissapeared in Inbox

This morning all my past emails in my Inbox had disappeared. I can view all these messages on my computer but all I had this morning was a blank screen with no emails in the Inbox. I'm receiving messages fine today but the feature of the 50 past emails doesn't seem to be working I have checked the settings and the 50 recent messages is checked.
Has anyone seen or experience the same issue.

  • Old emails in IMAP inbox folder have disappeared

    Hi there,
I came to look for an email pre September 23rd this year in my inbox and all of them have disappeared. I don't seem to be able to find any Archive folders. In the account settings, I have 'Don't delete any messages' selected.
Despite this, sent, draft and even deleted emails dating back to 2008 are still there which adds insult to injury!
Because it's IMAP, they have all disappeared on my email server's webmail service too, so it seems they've literally gone for good.
Does anybody have any idea at all where on earth I might be able to find them? More than a little pissed off with Thunderbird right now (and my paid-for email provider, who I've just rung, spoke to and have been put on hold for 20 minutes with!)

Then it is probably a server-side issue rather than an issue with your Mac.
Items left in the Inbox are still resident on the mail provider's servers. While there, they are subject to the email provider's policies as to how long to keep them. Some providers allow you to adjust that criterium via preferences accessed by going to your mail account through your browser.
One solution for that is to get the emails actually onto your Mac. To do that, create new mailboxes via the "New Mailbox..." item in the Mailbox menu. Be sure to select "On My Mac" as the location for them. Then move the mail messages from the inbox into those new mailboxes.
To move messages from one mailbox to another, select one or more messages in the list, then click and hold on it/them and drag the group into the new mailbox.
Adding several new mailboxes in the "On My Mac" area will also allow you to sort your collection of messages into various groups according to your logic; this makes finding a particular message much easier.

  • I have a new mac book air and every time i start up the computer it loads all my emails, somewhere around 10,000.  Even though I delete them, which take a long time, they keep coming back?  How do I delete all my old emails?  thank you

I have a problem with my Macbook air which keeps reloading all my old emails to my inbox.  Even thought i delete them, which takes a long time, over 10,000...they keep coming back?  How do I delete old messages?  Thank you

check your account settings, possibly under advanced settings.
look for an option to check "remove messages from server" or similar.

  • How do you copy and file old emails by year date?

I have a load of old emails in my inbox/sent folders which I would like to keep on file. Is there an easy way to copy all mail dated 2012 and drop them in a separate file ..
    Thank you

There is an add-on to TB which allows import and export of emails in various formats to a separate storage medium (external disk, thumb drive, etc.).
One of it's many options is to search and export by various criteria. You can select a date range as one of those options.
The instructions on how to download and install it can be found at http://barryduggan.info/exportMail.php

  • Can see list of old emails, but error message when trying to view message.

Ok, after a Mail crash (10.4.1), there were no accounts listed and of course no old emails, sent or in the inbox, were visible.
We reentered all the account info, as if we were starting anew, and now we are able to see the list of all old emails in the inbox and sent mailbox, but when we click on any message before the crash, we get this error message:
The message from David Crandon, ([email protected]), concerning (the subject of the email), has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take the account online in order to download it.
Now, obviously, the accounts are online because we can send and receive new emails with no problem, and of course, the old emails aren't going to be on the server anymore.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

Well, didn't work. I spent an hour and a half just trying to get my 76yr old uncle to back able to drag and drop into the correct folder, and then trying to find the file when he didn't....!
Anyway, it didn't work. After removing the Envelope Index file, and reimporting the messages, everything was the same. He could still see all his old emails in the list in Mail, but got the same error message when trying to view them.
Then, we rebuilt the inbox, and now none of his old messages are visible! However, they are still on the computer.
All his old emails are ".emlx" files and if we click directly on one of them, then Mail will launch and display the message properly in it's own window. But again, we get the above error message if we try to view it by selecting it from the message list in mail.
One interesting thing...in the Library->Mail folder their are two folders, "Mailboxes" and "Mailboxes.mbox". Both at the same level. It's the Mailboxes.mbox folder that has all his old emails. Although all the old ones have the suffix ".elmx". In the Mailboxes folder are all the new emails since we reset all the prefs in Mail after the crash a couple of days ago.
Anymore help please to get mail to recognize all these old emails?
    Thanks,
    David

  • I keep losing emails from my iPad.. HELP!

I keep losing emails from my inbox on my iPad.. They seem to disappear on a daily basis. I have an account set up on my iPad, iPhone 4 and iMac. Would that effect the mails on the iPad? Every time I go and check my emails they have just disappeared and I have to check the mails on either my phone or the iMac.. it is sooo frustrating!

I have had this same issue for about a month.  I have checked every setting on every device but still lose emails randomly.  I use an iPhone 4s, an iPad, and a Dell laptop.  I have them all synced with outlook and everything was working fine in the beginning.  Howevr as of late, I go to refernce emails on my iPhone only to find it missing.  Whe it is missing from iPhone, it is also missing from iPad.  BUT it is still on my laptop.
This has become very frustrating for me because booting up my laptop to reference an email from yesterday that I actually read on my iPhone takes a looonggg tiimme.
Please let me know which "settings" I am overlooking because I am getting a bad opinion of Apple.

  • IPhone showing New Old emails...?

    Hi,
This last week something strange has been happening my iPhone. I had 2 old emails in my inbox that I kept for reference (they had links), then a few days ago I got 19 new emails and once I opened my inbox I realized that they were emails from the last 2 weeks that i'd already opened, read and deleted from both my iPhone and on my Hotmail inbox on my laptop.
The same thing has happened again this morning, 16 new emails that I deleted last week... anybody know what's going on? it's happened 3 times over this last week.

Yes! I've been using gmail on my iPhone 3G for a while now, and without problems. I have started syncing calendar and contacts using Google's Exchange server (m.google.com) which is also brilliant.
However, I picked up the news that Hotmail now offers POP for free so I thought I would give that a bash. Apparently it's not available in South Africa yet, so I deleted that. That was about two hours ago.
Now, every time I go into my inbox it seems that my messages are multiplying! First there were 3 identical copies (same sender, subject, time, content) of each, then 5, and now it's well over 10 copies!
I've checked gmail online and that looks normal, gmail in my Outlook is fine too. It's pretty annoying though - does anyone have an idea as to what this might be?

  • How to find old emails received 3+ years ago?

A few months back I was able search through old emails in my inbox and find emails from as far back as November 2011. Now when i search I can only go back as far as July 2012. These emails were not deleted, I am sure of that. So is there any way of finding these emails from Nov 2011 and if possible even further back? The farther back I can go the better.

CROSS APPLY TargetData.nodes('RingBufferTarget/event[@name="xml_deadlock_report"]') AS XEventData (xed)
