Keeping only some music, or deleting playlists from device?

Hi all,
I have 16 GB of music on my iPhone after I turned on iTunes Match.  I want to delete most of it, but there are some songs that I want to keep on the device.  This has been much more difficult than I thought.  I've been having this issue ever since I subscribed to iTunes Match when it was finally stable enough to work on my music library (about 10 months after subscribing, around 6 months ago).
The reason I want to keep some songs is because a large part of my music is in lossless format, and I listen to it on high quality audio systems and can easily tell the difference between 256kbps AAC and CD quality.  The CD quality sounds much better, and I definietly want to keep about 5 GB of music in this format on the iPhone, as I listen to this music even at home with my iPhone plugged into my receiver or over AirPlay.  If I delete my entire music library on the iPhone and download the songs again, they will be downgraded in quality.  I've done a lot of research about this, so I'm sure this is the case, unfortunately.
So now I have to manually delete about 1000 songs (out of ~1400) from my iPhone music library.  What's worse is that I have almost as many artists and albums as I do songs, the nature of the music genres I have - rarely are there albums or more than 2 or 3 songs from just one artist without it being a remix by another.  This means I can't just go through different arists or albums and delete the ones I don't want.  It has to be songs.  Plus I am not good with the names, so I have to listen to the song before I know whether to delete it.  The songs I want to keep are easier to identify, but unfortunately I can't just choose them.
I could create a playlist of all the songs I want to keep, but there is no option to delete songs from all other playlists.  In fact, there is no option to delete all the songs within a playlist, or even delete a song from a playlist itself!  All my music is organized by playlists, so it's easier to find the songs to delete by navigating through playlists, rather than the flat list of 1400 songs.  The only way to delete a song from there is to open the playlist, play a song, then click the top right icon to show the album where it will usually show just the one song (as I have about as many "albums" as I do songs), and only then can I swipe and delete the song.
This is a huge hassle, and I have been doing this to free up space on my iPhone.  I have about 32MB free, and before I can download an app, get an update, or even check my mail, I have to go and find more songs to delete through this method.  After deleting about 10 songs, I have enough space to continue using the phone for about a week or two.  But I just don't have the time to go and do this for 1000 songs!!!
When I plug the phone into the computer, I can see all the songs in iTunes.  I wish I could just select the songs (for some reason I can't change the sort order, which is a pain), and delete them.  But iTunes won't let me!
Popcorn Break      Font Change
I checked how long it's taking me with the current method.  I have 1400 songs (on the device) in 85 playlists, taking up 16 GB.  I want to keep about 350 songs, around 5 GB I'm guessing.  This is an estimate, because I only know which songs I want to keep when I hear them, or by which playlist they are in.  It's easier to find the songs that I want to keep, but instead I must to delete the songs I don't want to keep, as that's the only way Apple allows it.
It takes about 6 seconds to navigate to the song (on average, navigating through playlists), about 10-20 seconds to play it, and 3 seconds to delete it.  That's about 25 seconds per song.  With 1000 songs, that's 25,000 seconds = 7 hours of work!!  And that's continuously doing this, which isn't even possible as sometimes I get stutters or random freezes for a few seconds before the iPhone is operational again (background apps/notifications?).
Even if I could select multiple songs within a playlist, or use iTunes to delete, it might not be much faster.  Let's say it takes as long as 5 minutes to evaluate a playlist and select songs to delete from the playlist.  With 85 playlists, that would be 85 * 5 = 425 minutes = 7 hours!  Now if I could do it as fast as 1 minute per playlist, which might be possible with iTunes (e.g. it has Select All or allows you to delete an entire playlist on just the device, without affecting iTunes Match), it would only take 1.5 hours, which is reasonable.
But it's still somewhat ridiculous having to spend an entire workday just to salvage ~350 songs.  If I could "tick" and select these songs that I want to keep via iTunes, I think it would take me about 5-7 seconds in the worst case if I have to listen to the song.  I usually know the name of the song that I want to keep, so it would be faster, but even if it did take 6 seconds on average, that would be 6 * 350 = 2125 seconds = 35 minutes.  Now that's more reasonable!
If anyone has any suggestions to speed up or make this process easier, I'd really appreciate it.  Otherwise I'll struggle with waiting for a better solution while in the meantime spending 5-10 minutes deleting a few songs every week.  At this rate, I estimate I'll finish in 100 weeks.  This doesn't sound that bad actually, but it'll probably get more and more difficult finding the songs I don't want since there will be a higher ratio of songs I want to keep vs. not.  So it might be closer to 5 years (or I'll have to spend more than 5-10 minutes per session), at which point I'll hopefully have a 256 GB iPhone and don't have to worry about running out of space, especially with a measily 16 GB of music.  I'm tired of the running out of space warnings ever since I got my first iPhone (64 GB).
Thank you everyone!  For listening, and any advice you can give!

This is a good idea.  Somehow I forgot about it, as I haven't been using the computer I used to sync my iPhone with for like a year.  I stopped thinking about syncing when everything moved to iCloud.  However, I still do have access to that computer (sort of - it doesn't have a monitor right now), and more importantly the original music files that I want to transfer!  I remember this was my original idea when I first signed up for iTunes match and wrote it down somewhere, but forgot about this plan.  Probably because it took months to get the feature working in the first place.
I was scared to turn off iTunes Match once I got everything working, as I didn't want to go through all the hassle again.  So whenever I plug in my iPhone, it wouldn't let me manage my music.  It seems to be much more stable now, so I suppose I can just disable it on the iPhone.  I can keep it enabled on the computer, right?  Then I sync the playlists that I want, and it should delete anything not selected on the iPhone.  Hopefully once it's done and I turn iTunes Match back on, it'll go back to working smoothly.
Thanks, Michael.  I forgot about transfering the music from the original source.  I'm getting used to how powerful these iOS devices are nowadays that I forget you can't do everything with them, that more complex operations are better done on the desktop, but in a specific way.
I still think that iTunes should let you delete music straight off the iPhone when it's plugged in.  But that's another issue.

  • Cannot delete playlist from Walkman

Hi - Just got a Z1 compact and went to put my micro sd card from my old phone into the sony. Everything is fine except i cannot delete playlists from the My Playlists section of Walkman. The playlists have no content in them, i can't add content to them, and i can't delete them. How do i get rid of them???? Suspect they have to be on the SD somewhere but cannot find them by searching the name or the file type .m3u. Any idea how i find and delete these ghost playlists?? thanks in advance!

Hi, I'd just like you to know that havin already tried EZ File Manager and manual deletion via USB I still couldn't delete certain non-working tracks from the Walkman app, and although I thought your advice seemed potentially dangerous, I tried it as you're a moderator so I trusted it was some 'combination' that was safe. Anyway, long story short I wiped all the media on my phone and SD, of which there was plenty, amassed over a lot of time (the music in particular). If I can't retrieve backups of the music, I'll be very angry with you. (The photos and videos were mostly backed up recently). I don't know if this was some weird, cruel joke for frustrated clueless phone users (not thinking straight late at night, in my case) but if it was, you've caused me to delete everything, and I hope you're happy with yourself. -Feargal

From what you have described, I don't think you are ever going to pick that up as malware at all. But I did look at the site you mentioned in Google Chrome, and in IE9. First thought was maybe Chrome suppresses it, but that would be contrary to trying to convince you that their AdSense or IntelliTXT is "helping" you.
What I did find in Chrome was
"Google Chrome's connection attempt to ad-apac.doubleclick.net was rejected. The website may be down, or your network may not be properly configured."
Since I don't have ad blockers in Chrome or IE, that tells me that my hosts file is doing its job, you can draw you own conclusions. There is something similar displayed in IE, but I can't read what was there because the font-size was too big. for the space. In Firefox with "Adblock Plus" extension it is all wiped out. The hosts file works across the entire system but is directed at blocking malware sites more than advertising. "Adblock Plus" is very good at blocking ads and can do its blocking with more generic filters, and can block a lot of malware from coming in but it can't block at the system level that a hosts file can.
In IE although I can only see "It appea" because the font is too large and text does not wrap it does actually say "It appears you are connected to the Internet, but you might want to try to reconnect to the Internet."
I would certainly suggest installing "Adblock Plus" extension and the "Easylist (USA)" filter subscription -- links are in the links previously provided, and installing the hosts file as well also in the links.
It takes a bit more work to install and maintain a hosts file but the directions should be clear enough.

  • HT1296 I would like to transfer my music library, including playlists, from my old iphone to my new one.  But  I can't figure out how!

I would like to transfer my music library, including playlists, from my old iphone to my new iphone.

Connect the new phone to the computer and iTunes, then sync your library. I'm guessing that you have been syncing the old phone in the past, which would keep your library updated.

  • How do you recover a deleted playlist from the cloud?

How do you recover a deleted playlist from the cloud?

If you navigate to your Trash folder the message should be there ... if not then perhaps this is a setting on your particular account (the Exchange server side, not the iPhone). On my Exchange account for work I can go to the Trash folder and not only find a deleted message, but move it back to my Inbox (or any other folder).

I have deleted playlists from my iphone4 that I wish to restore. The current back up does not contain them either. Can I use a back up from yesterday? How do I find it on my laptop?

No iTunes content is included in any iPhone backup. If the playlists are not in your iTunes library, on your computer, they are gone.

I synced a movie from my laptop 2 my iPad but lost some music video I purchased from iTunes store. How can I get them back ? Thxs

Sorry, but movies cannot be downloaded more than once without charge, so if you don't have a viable backup, you may be out of luck. You can, however, contact the iTunes Store, explain the situation, and see if they can make an exception for you.

  • Only some music syncing?

Hi, I’ve recently had a problem syncing my iPad with music I already have on iTunes (some purchased from ITunes and some not, built up over the years). I want to have all my music (the ones ticked in iTunes) on the iPad but it just doesn’t seem to be transferring them across, with only some of them now appearing on my iPad?
Not sure why? This has only happened recently, not sure whether this is as a result of updating to IOS 8.02 on the iPad?
I've already tried deleting all music from the iPad and reloading from my PC, but it still keeps happenening?
    Any thoughts.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Deleting playlists from a manually managed ipod

To save diskspace on my pc I manually manage my ipod so I can save the music on it and delete it from my pc and add new songs as I go along.
Was this a bad idea? I thought I would be able to upload music from my ipod to my pc at a later date, is that possible?
Also I would like to delete certain playlists from my nano but I guess because I am manually updating my ipod they do not show up in iTunes. Is there any way to clear up certain playlists on my Nano?
If I have songs on my Ipod that aren't on my pc, will automatically updating erase songs on my Nano?
    Thanx
Ipod Nano 5th Gen   Windows XP

    Was this a bad idea?
Not necessarily. As long as you understand that if your iPod crashes, you will no longer have the music and you will have to repurchase it and/or reload from the original CDs.
To delete song or playlists from the iPod, connect the iPod to the computer.
In the Source frame in iTunes, click the triangle next to the iPod name.
The playlists will on the iPod will be displayed.
Select on eto delete and press Delete.
If you delete a playlist or a song from a playlist on the iPod, it does not delete the song. You still have to click on th eiPod name and delete the songs.
If I have songs on my Ipod that aren't on my pc, will automatically updating erase songs on my Nano?
    Yes.
Syncing the iPod is one way. iTunes to iPod. iTunes will update the iPod to match iTunes.

  • I want only SOME music on my phone and the cloud is making this hard

I am trying to get all of the music I do not want off my phone.
I have deleted all of the song files, but now I need to delete the cloud-based song that are showing up so that I can add back in only what I want.
When I try to manually manage the songs on my phone, most of the songs are grayed out and none of the selct check boxes are available for me to remove....I have some music showing up I do not want to reference on shuffle and would rather just remove them off my phone entirely and leave them in my library.
    Help~
    Thanks,

  • How the files are decreasing from RBS storage after some time i delete docs from document library, where shld I check the settings for this?

    HI
I created a web application and configured  rbs storage ,
I uploaded documents (for ex: 18 number)
after uploaded  documents ,  and observed the RBS storage folder, number of files are increasing (39 number) , its working fine
and also  I run the querys to check the rows increasing or not , (when I upload new doc rows are increased its fine also)
    select count(*) from alldocs
    Select count(*) from AllDocstreams
but when I delete some docs from document library ,
1)the doc itself deleted from document library
2)when I check the rbs storage  there is no number of files are decreased(its still 39 files ), its same as  before doc deleted from doc library
after some time I found the number of files are decreasing from RBS storage folder in sql server,
here I want to know the how the files are decreasing from RBS storage  after some time, where  shld I check the settings for this? and how I control on it
here how I know the settings for cleaning up orphan BLBOS how  these deleted BLOB
    adil

    1. WHen you delete the file from Sharepoint, it is still present in Recycle bin. This is a default setting in sharepoint for 30 days. Once files are deleted fro Recycle bin, it can also be delete from RBS
    2. There is a RBS cleanup job which deletes files from RBS. for more info check
