Keeping Original Files

What's the general guidelines for keeping original files after completing a project? Do most of you discard them, or keep them?
Being as I'm not a very efficient shooter, I sometimes have a couple minutes of video for just ten seconds of needed footage. Those files take up a lot of space. Any recommendations appreciated.
Thank you. Stan

Thanks for the kind words.
That is just my scheme, and much of it is predicated on the need to migrate entire Projects between multiple computers.
Were I ONLY working on the workstation, I would possibly do things a bit differently, to get more performance:
C:\ OS and programs w/ possibly the Page File
D:\ RAID0 Project root folder w/ Copies of media under it
E:\ Project in Project root folder
F:\ RAID0 Scratch Disks in Project root folder, including Render Files
G:\ RAID0 Export/Share files to Project root folder
So long as the RAID drives are managed by a dedicated hardware card, things should fly. If the RAID is managed by software, or even hardware on the MoBo, there is not nearly so great a performance increase - though there will be some.
That would mean that when I am finished, I would need to go to four separate HDD's, but would only need to Delete the Project root folder from each. My media Asset originals would stay on my NAS, out of the way.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • How to keep original file name in File- Soap- Soap- File scenario?

    Hi Gurus,
I have a requirement as bleow:
There are two PI landscape for two different company and they are communicating using Soap adapter. We need to pass a flat file cross the two PI now, and need to keep the original file name.Anyone could shed some lights on this?
    Thanks,
    Rajesh

Hi Rajesh - See if you can make use of Dynamic configuration bean. I'm not sure if it works but you can give a try..
Unknown use case of DynamicConfigurationBean: Store file name to JMS header without mapping
Adding DynamicConfigurationBean in the Module Processor - SAP NetWeaver Process Integration - SAP Library
Set the adapter specific attributes in file sender channel for filename
swap the file name value to any other soap adapter attribute in the receiver channel using the above module
again swap the attributes in soap sender channel(your second system)
    receiver file channel enable ASMA.

  • Lightroom Keeping Original File Size on JPEG Export

In Photoshop Light room, when I make edits to some JPEG files in a library and leave some unedited, I want to then export the JPEG files, keeping their original file sizes. The default quality setting is 60%, but this reduces the file sizes.
How do I keep the original file sizes?
    Thx.
    Tony.

    > The default quality setting is 60%, but this reduces the file sizes. How do I keep the original file sizes?
All of the Export Presets can be edited and the new settings made to be default. Alternatively you can set up your own, new, presets to your own specification.

  • Renaming, but keeping original file numbers problem

It appears that when I edit RAW files from lightroom in photoshop, upon saving it adds "edit" to the filename AFTER the original file number.  Since what comes back from photoshop is a PSD file instead of a RAW file it's pretty obvious that I've edited the image, so the change just becomes an annoying addition to the file name -- that is, until I go to export the images in other formats.
When exporting, I tell Lightroom to rename my files, but keep the original file number.  Since the original file number now has "edit" behind it on any of the psd files, Lightroom wipes out the file name and starts numbering them numerically.
This makes it difficult from an organizational standpoint, since I use the original file number as part of my database management.
Anybody know how to stop the "edit" intrusion in the filename, and if that will indeed fix the file numbering issue?
    Thanks,
    Drew

    Thanks!
I'm curious though -- why does it seem like a bad practice from a DAM standpoint?
Quite often my files are saved as RAW, PSD's, Tiffs, and Jpegs -- the last two going to my clients.  If they need something changed on the file sometime down the road, it's very easy to find my way back to the PSD or RAW file to make the fix if they share a file number.

  • Any way to keep original file name as image name for web gallery?

    Hi,
I wonder if there is any way to keep the original file name as image name for a web gallery (instead of "picture-1.jpg)
People often send us the thumbnails or the image from the web and we have to search forever to find the image in AP - if we could keep our original filename then this would be a second away.
    Hope somebody has an idea
    thanks

    Hi William,
I finally had time to play - unfortunately it does
not work the way you described above.
I´m just exporting a set of images using the "Stock
Black" Theme - marked name only - batched the
filename to masterfile - but the actual picture names
    are still "picture-1.jpg" - "picture-2.jpg".
    did I miss anything? thanks
I see what you want, you don't care about the screen name so much but want the generated file names to be the same as the version names. From earlier messages though I am not quite sure why this is a problem, since you said other people were picking the images they wanted - say Image1 and 23 and 8. That to me says those people are going through the directory using Finder or Explorer, not using the HTML.
Is it the case you are giving people web galleries on CD? If so, then perhaps also export a "browse" directory with exported images using the version names, so that people can use the right name.
Or perhaps it's the case that people are downloading the images from the web, and then using the downloaded file names to send you requests. I'm not sure how to fix this yet and do not know if 1.1 offers something for this.

  • Tethering in Lightroom with MK III - Can't keep original file names

    Hello,
I am shooting a Canon Mark III to Lightroom 3.3 with RAW 6.3 on OS 10.5.8.  All I want to do is insert custom text in front of the original file name from the camera.  I cannot even seem to get Lightroom to allow the images to maintain the naming from the camera.  The options "filename", "original file number" and "sequence" all rename the files in accordance with Lightroom preferences.  I want to keep the naming from the camera and simply add custom text in addition to it.  I would be pleased to even learn if Lightroom can accept the name from the camera as it does not seem able to do so.  No matter what I select, input, or leave out, Lightroom seems to rename the file in some way or another.
The problem with most of the naming conventions in Lightroom is that the numbers seem to reset when the camera gets turned off.  "Sequence" is the only setting that maintains a consistent and ascending count even if the camera is turned off then back on but it still doesn't reflect the camera settings which most photographers prefer to leave on continuous.  While this affords a temporary solution, it does not fix the issue that we would prefer to see the original filename and number that the camera puts out.  I have tested all the filename settings in Lightroom (including inputting nothing) and can't seem to get the actual original camera written filename to show up.  PLEASE HELP!
It is hard to imagine that any software this powerful, especially from Adobe, could overlook and fail to execute something so crucial and basic as simply not overwriting the file info from the camera.
Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hello,
original file name is only stored in the lightroom catalog file. This means, the original filename is stored in your LR4 catalog! After you upgraded to LR5 you simply have to open the LR4 catalog and LR5 will convert the catalog into an LR5 catalog.
I hope, you still have an LR4 catalog backup (before you removed all images)? Otherwise original file name is lost.

  • Converted to PDF how do I keep original File name??

    Hi
I've set up a automator action to compress my Microsoft Word Document to PDF and "mail file". How do i keep the original Word document filename that i originally saved as, rather that the "Microsoft Word Document.doc" as it appears in the new email message
    Thanks for any help
    Jonathan

It is a problem with Microsoft Word. When it sends a print job, it names it "Microsoft Word Document," instead of something useful, like the document name. Since there is no way to capture the name of the original file when you print from the PDF Services menu, I don't see a way to code it.
A workaround is to add a "Rename Finder Items" action between the compress and Mail actions. Set it to rename a single item and show the action at runtime. You can then type in a name you want.
I had started working on a method to get the name of the document, but realized the problem that I stated above. Since you are "Printing" from the PDF Services, you don't know the actual document name as Microsoft has "hidden" it.

  • Bridge CS4 - keep original file date/time

Is it possible to set Bridge NOT to change original file modify date/time when editing metadata?
    Something like Irfan can do...
    thanks

I know what you mean. Since the modified date is the only picture related date that can be used in explorer (and some other tools) for sorting, it's a very valuable field.
While to my knowledge it's not possible to conserve the modified date in Bridge, it's at least possible to change it back to its original value after you've tagged your pictures in Bridge. For that, you need the free software EXIF Tool GUI:
    http://freeweb.siol.net/hrastni3/foto/exif/exiftoolgui.htm
There, under "Modify", you can choose "FileModifyDate as in Exif:DateTimeOriginal
If your only concern is sorting, I would recommend the following strategy:
Before doing any tagging, use a renaming tool, such as the freeware LupasRenam2000 v.5
    http://rename.lupasfreeware.org/
In there, sort your files according to the modified date (as long as it's still correct) and then add an increasing AutoNumber in front of your filename. Now, you can always sort by filename and get the correct temporal order.

  • Converting AIF to MP3 and keeping original file name?

Wondering if this is possible to do using iTunes (if not, i'm open to suggestions). Basically I have a collection of AIFF files named very specifically and I'm looking to convert them to MP3 without changing the names of the actual file (example: POS-01CutThroat.aif becomes POS-01CutThroat.mp3) but still keep all the metadata of the AIF in the MP3 (title, composers, comments etc...)
If anyone has any clue as to what i'm talking about, or even better can help me out, please let me know
    Thanks!
    null

    I have two suggestions:
    1. Use the Sundry Info to Comments script to add the filename to the Comment field, then use the File Renamer script to rename the files based on the comment field after you’ve ripped them. Obviously, this will only work if you don’t have other info that needs to be in that field.
    2. Rip your files using Max, which gives you a lot more flexibility than iTunes in terms of how the files are named and tagged. This will also produce better sounding MP3 files, because unlike iTunes, it uses the LAME standard.
Personally, I would go with suggestion #2.

  • Bridge MUST KEEP ORIGINAL FILES NAMES when creating a web gallery.

My clients use the galleries I create to download higher resolution images, and now Bridge decides to randomly rename the output images with arbitrary numbers? REALLY? Why on earth would Bridge even NEED to do that? So stupid, please fix, pronto.

    I agree.
The web gallery is useless this way.
    Fix needed asap!

  • ITunes no longers asks "Do you want to keep the original file or move to trash?" - Can this be fixed?

I'm not sure if this was a recent update in Mavericks, but when I used to delete items from iTunes it would ask something along the lines of:
Do you want to keep the original file or move to trash?
Now I no longer get this, instead iTunes asks:
Are you sure you want to delete the selected song from your iTunes library?
After which, if you choose the option "Delete Song", you get no option to keep the original file, it just straight up deletes if from my library and hard drive. Does anyone know if there is a way around this? For whatever reason, I want to be able to keep the original file on my Mac, without keeping it in my iTunes library.
I've tried resetting dialogue warning, and this hasn't made a difference.
    Thanks!

  • I cannot play music from my library on either my external drive or my laptop - keep getting same message "___ song (all of them) could not be used because the original file could not be found. I have tried changing the path in prefernces many times.

I cannot play music from my libray on either my external drive or my laptop. I keep getting the same message - "___ song (all of them) could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" I have changed the path several times under preferences and it still won't recognize any songs from either my laptop hard drive or my external drive. I can't play any music at all.

I think I've fixed this on my machine.  If you look in the ITunes folder there is a subfolder called Previous iTunes Libraries.  In my case for some reason this contained the one which had always worked and a new one was in the main  folder.  I closed iTunes, deleted the new one, and moved the old one back to the main folder, then opened iTunes.  It then rebuilt the library and it plays correctly.  Hope it works for you.

  • Receiver File Adapter: Keep original Filename in E-Mail Attachment

    Dear All
On our SAP-XI 7.0.1 (EHP 1, sp 4) we have the following scenario:
    (1) SAP-XI picks a FlatFile from the R/3 application server. This file should be forwarded unmodified to the e-mail receiver.
    (2) In the Sender channel I have set the option "Set Adapter-specific Message Attributes" including the FileName.
    (3) In the Receiver channel I have set the message protocol = XIPAYLOAD. In the "Mail Attributes" I do NOT use the mail package yet marked the flag "Keep Attachments". No module has been added to this channel.
Result: The original file "dollytest1" is sent as e-mail attachment "Untitled.xml".
QUESTION: Is there a (simple) solution which allows the e-mail attachment to keep its genuine filename ("dollytest1") without any suffix?
