Keeping recovery partition hidden for later use

Hello all,
I have HP Envy M6-n012dx and it's got pre-installed Windows 8. I see the recovery partition is named D: in my PC (and I don't know why it needs to be shown in my PC as it could easily be messed up).  I shrank my C drive and made two extra partitions E and F.  What I would like to do now is to remove the drive letter from recovery partition and rename my E and F drives to D and E respectively.
This way my recovery partition would be hidden. Later on, if I want to fully reset my PC through recovery I will assign a drive letter to this recovery partiton. Will it work this way or I'll just ruin my recovery? Actually I don't want to perform a test on it as it would ruin my recovery. Also, I don't want to make recovery DVDs/USB out of it as I want it to be preseved in my laptop. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, Pleae use the following steps to hide a partition:      http://www.papervisions.com/hide-your-hard-drive-partition-in-windows-8-187xp-without-any-softwarehow-to/ Regards.

  • How do I create 2 Recovery partitions: one for Lion and one for Mountain Lion?

    Well that is basically the question:
    How do I create 2 recovery partitions: one for Lion and one for Mountain Lion?
    Reason is that I would like to keep the option to return to Lion, or even better, have a seperate partition for eacht?

    can I access my programs from the other partition, so I can save space ...
    No, as far as I know, each one is completely separate - especially if you're dealing with two different versions of OS's.
    is it possible to safely make an extra partion on a running drive (it is my main computer ...) The disk is large enough ...
    how large would this have to be
    I've personally never done it on a running drive - have read it's possible, but don't want to suggest it since I've never done it and wouldn't be sure about the steps. This is how I got to two partitions on my iMac:
    Originally, I had just one partition with Snow Leopard. I used CCC to clone that to an external drive. Booted into that drive and used DU to partition and erase the internal. I then cloned the new clone back. Also cloned the same thing to the other partition which I then upgraded to Lion. So I had two OS's - SL and Lion. I've now decided to clone my SL to an external drive for occasional use and installed ML on that partition - so now I have Lion and ML.
    There are two ways to get a "fresh" install: either download the OS again and install it on a partition of your choice or, as I've done as well, copy the installer to a safe place so you don't need to download it again. It does include whatever apps/software is included in the OS.  I've designated two smaller partitions on externals as my "fresh" installs of both Lion and ML for emergency or reinstall purposes (this is my way of dealing with not having install DVDs) - I took the time to install it there and then slowly add fresh installs of my important apps (either via download or install CD) - don't bother with the little/less used stuff, a current copy of that can be downloaded if and when I need it. I don't really update those two - that can also be done if/when I need it since that'll always change.
    So, yesterday, I decided I wanted to start fresh with ML - booted into my fresh install of Lion (on external), wiped the SL partition on my internal and installed Lion. Decided to download a fresh copy of the ML installer and installed that. Then ran Software Update. After that, repaired permissions. Then I methodically opened every third party app and checked for updates - installed those where necessary. After all that, I simply copied (drag 'n drop) my entire Documents folder (which contains all my important data,, photos, etc) over from another backup.
    This took a while, but mostly because of the long download times; the installs weren't all that bad. I should be running a really clean system now, especially since nothing was ported over except my Documents folder.

  • XML parsing (KXml) - how to save parser's position for later use?

    Hello.
    I am parsing an xml file using KXmlParser and i want to keep the position of the parser for later use so i can continue from that same position.
    int eventType = parser.getEventType();
            if (coupletForm!=null) {
                coupletForm.deleteAll();
            while (eventType != KXmlParser.END_DOCUMENT) {
                if (eventType == KXmlParser.START_TAG ){
                    String element_name = parser.getName();
                    if (element_name.equals("couplet")) {
                        coupletForm = new Form("Couplet 1");
                    else if (element_name.equals("lead_one")) {
                        while (eventType != KXmlParser.TEXT || (eventType == KXmlParser.TEXT && parser.isWhitespace()) ){
                            eventType = parser.next();
                        //Now reached <description> element
                        coupletOptions = null;
                        coupletOptions = new ChoiceGroup("Choose lead:", Choice.EXCLUSIVE);
                        coupletOptions.append(parser.getText(), null);
                        parser_stack.push(parser);
                    else if (element_name.equals("lead_two")) {
                        while (eventType != KXmlParser.TEXT || (eventType == KXmlParser.TEXT && parser.isWhitespace()) ){
                            eventType = parser.next();
                       //Now reached <description> element
                        coupletOptions.append(parser.getText(), null);
                        coupletForm.append(coupletOptions);
                        parser_stack.push(parser);
                        coupletForm.addCommand(CMD_NEXT);
                        coupletForm.setCommandListener(this);
                        display.setCurrent(coupletForm);
                        break;
                eventType = parser.next();
        }What i am doing here is parsing the xml file. When the parser finds an element with name <lead_one> it continues parsing until it finds the next element (<description>) and then creates a ChoiceGroup with the first option as the text found in the next element. I want to keep this position of the parser. The parser then continues until it finds element <lead_two> and does the same thing as <lead_one>. I want to save the positions of the parser when it stops at the <description> element. I am trying to do this using a stack, but this doesn't work.

    If you want to select nodes based on changing criteria, you should use XPath.
    If you have relatively fixed criteria, iterate over the nodes and pick out the ones that you want. For example:
      public static List<Element> getChildren(Element parent, String tagname) {
        List<Element> result = new ArrayList<Element>();
        NodeList children = parent.getChildNodes();
        for (int ii = 0 ; ii < children.getLength() ; ii++) {
          Node child = children.item(ii);
          if ((child.getNodeType() == Node.ELEMENT_NODE) && tagname.equals(child.getNodeName()) {
            result.add((Element)child);
        return result;
      }

  • Best method for timestamping? (for later use with perl script)

    What is the best method that I can use to timestamp events in Linux for later use with perl script?
    I am performing some energy measurements.. where I am running several tasks separated by 20 secs in between. Before I start any execution of tasks, I always place initial delay for me to start the script and start the measurement device.
    My problem is that I don't know how long is that first delay exactly. So to solve this, I thought I could use date commands to time stamp all tasks.. or at least to timestamp first dela.
    Here is example of what I am doing:
    1st delay
    task 1
    20s
    task 2
    20s
    task 3..... etc
    What would be the best to use?

    logger.
    It posts messages straight to the system log.  You can see the message, in all its glory using tools like journalctl.  You will see the message, the date, time, host name, user name, and the PID of logger when it ran.

    What exactly are your steps?
    Create new file in Draw
    Draw something
    Send to Illustrator

  • Recovery Partition mandatory for File Vault and unencrypted TM Backup?

    I recently had to setup my Macbook Pro from scratch meaning erasing the whole disk and start from there.
    The update to Lion took already place a while ago and I had File Vault active. After making a last backup using
    TM I erased the disk and all partitions including Recovery partition and used the Leopard system DVD to boot
    the machine.
    From there I used the restore function to restore my TM backup to the MacBook. However, as the drive was
    not partioned and not formated, I had to do this manually. Apparently, the recovery process via TM does not include
    that. After system recovery, I booted from the Macbook and all apps and configuration seemed ok.
    I was a little surprised to see that I was able to do this recovery without being asked for ID and password of the user's File Vault access
    or the File Vault recovery key. All I needed was the TM ID and password (which is different from the owners ID and password)
    I am not sure if this is supposed to work like this but I looks rather easy to gain access to application an data of another user if that
    is all it takes?
    Now booting Lion again, I checked File Vault and noticed it was disabled although it was enabled for quite a while and long time
    before I took the latest backup. I could not turn it on, after providing a recovery key and asking me wether I wanted to write it down
    or safe it with Apple which I declined I wanted to reboot the notebook to start encryption but stopped saying my partition or volume
    would not support File Vault. This was GUID and MacOS Extended Journal partition and volume which to my knowledge would
    certainly support File Vault. In fact this is basically what I had before when File Vault was turned on and running.
    I called Apple support a few times. The second agent told me that it does not work because there is not recovery partition on my
    system but there was when I took the latest backup and I do have other means to get the recovery screen. Anyway it seems that
    File Vault required a local Recovery partition and I was wondering if anyone can tell me why this dependency exist. If I write down the
    recovery key, why would I need it to be stored on my disk as well?
    Also, if anyone has an idea if there is a way of creating a local recovery partition without having to go through the lenghty process of installing
    Leopard then upgrade to Lion and install all the apps and configure the OS again, would be great? I assume when I am back on Lion and use the TM
    backup for recovery, I probably end up with having the Recovery partition deleted and start from scratch again.
    I am a little concerned about the fact that it seems so easy to gain access to a protected backup and that the TM restore process does not include
    restoring partition and volumes as well. Who knows how many other dependencies exist and users have to reinstall their system again after recovery.
    I was following the recovery instruction of Apple but perhaps someone knows a better way to do this?

    Just an update, I went ahead and installed Lion again over the existing TM restored installation using the Lion Update file and at least File Vault is working. Interestingly, I still do not have a Recover partition so obviously something new for Apple Support to learn.

  • How to continuously do AOAI and buffer the data for later use?

    Is there a way to do simultaneous AI and AO and keep the data in the buffer until I am finished with reading, then read the buffer and save the data to disc. I want to acquire 1000 scans on up to 10 chanels at 10 000 Scans/s, while generating one output signal.
    I have seen plenty of continuous AIAO examples, but all they do is show the data. I don't mind not viewing the data, all I want is to hold it for later analysis, while avoiding writing to disc as I fear this will slow the process too much. Or would a different approach than simultaneous AIAO be more appropriate?

  • Where can I find recovery partition image for SVF14A15CXB (SVF14AC1QL)?

    Hi there. I've bougth used VAIO SVF14A15CXB (SVF14AC1QL). Previous owner replaced the HDD and there's no recovery partition there and I don't have recovery dvd.  Where can I find parttion image or dvd image?

    Hi bonya1423,
    Welcome to Sony Community!
    The Vaio Recovery Media Disc can only be purchased from the country of origin. This SVF14A15CXB is a US model, it means that you can only get the recovery disc at https://sony.encompass.com and here is the part# 9-892-057-42. You may contact them for more info.
    I hope this helps.

  • Archiving to DVD, but want it for later use

    Hi,
    I have read a number of posts about archiving footage, but either I am daft or my specific concerns haven't quite been answered.
    I have a number of short clips (20-25 minutes) that have filled up my hard drive. They are all above DVD storage limitations, but I need to take them off. However, I am not totally done with them. I may want to re-edit some of them later.
    The other posts seem to suggest my only options are re-exporting them to tape or getting an external hard drive.
    Is there no other way?

    What other way are you looking for???
    Back up methods:
    1) Back up tape drives. Most reliable, extremely cost ineffective for individual use.
    2) Back up video to miniDV tape. Best option to archive video material. Cost effective but time consuming.
    3) Use hard drives. Depending on the frequency of needing hard drives, purchasing a hot swappable case can be beneficial. Hard drives are inexpensive per GB, the fastest of all options, and fairly reliable.
    4) Optical Media. The least reliable of the back up options. Time consuming sorting and burning media. Cost per GB is comparable to hard drives but seems less expensive as you can by a spindle of 20 discs for less than a hard drive.
    If there is another back up option, I don't know of it!

  • IHAVE 10.7.5. I WANT TO USE FIND MY MAC. IF I BUY 10.85 WILL IT COME WITH A RECOVERY PARTITION SO I CAN USE FIND MY MAC

    I have an early 2011 macbook air on 10.7.5 I want to use find my mac but it says i need a recovery partition. If i buy 10.85 will it come with a recovery partition and will i be able to use find my mac

    If you are using 10.7, you should have a recovery partition, now. Installing 10.8 will install or update the recovery partition if it can. If you have a drive partitioning scheme setup that prevents the recovery partition from being added, then I don't think 10.8 will change that.
    Do you have a recovery partition now?

  • How can I save a named filter and sorting for later use?

    I regularly do several different complex filtering and sorting on large tables. I did not find a way to save them for later one-click reuse. So I always have to do it again, which is time-consuming and error-prone. Hoped to get a solution by AppleScript, but filter and sort is not accessible by scripting.
    Is there a way or does Apple have it on it´s agenda for future versions of Numbers?

    Hi Jan,
    filter and sort is not accessible by scripting.
    There is some support for sort (and less for filter) in Numbers 3.
    Table has a filtered property.
    And you can sort.
    A sort example can be found at https://iworkautomation.com/numbers/table-sort.html.
    Not sure if this will be sufficient to handle your needs, but just wanted to point out there is some scripting support.

  • Why does Outlook keep "preparing [iCloud] calendar for first use"?

    Hello all --
    I just installed iCloud on my Windows 7 laptop and configured it to integrate with Exchange. The functionality seems to work but there are two very annoying behaviours that I hope someone can help me with:
    Every time I switch to the calendar view I get a little bubble in the taskbar saying "preparing calendar for first use". This ends up freezing Outlook for about 45- 60 seconds -- long enough for the Outlook window to have a "(not responding)" added to the title bar. This freeze-out is massively disruptive. It seems like Outlook is re-preparing the new iCloud calendars every time. Is this normal? Is there a configuration setting I could look at for this?
    The iCloud calendars are always checked when I start up. Is there any way to uncheck them? Solving this might solve #1 above
    Any suggestions on how to resolve and/or debug these further?
    Thanks!

  • Keeping Mavericks Installer for later use

    I am about to install Mavericks. I am told that the download installs an installer file and another file which can be used to reinstall Mavericks at a later date, if needed. That other file is deleted as soon as the installer file is run and Mavericks installs.
    How can I find that other file and save it to DVD before running the installer (filename, where it is.)?
    Thanks.

    Sounds like you want a clone of your newly made system complete with Mavericks plus all your files. You can do this in any number of ways. It's basically just a backup. Since 10.8.3 Time Machine maintains an  invisible copy of the Recovery HD so that you can boot from the Time Machine backup drive, reinstall OS X, then restore your files.
    Or you can create an initial clone of your hard drive that is bootable. This bootable backup can be incrementally updated in almost any way you want using third-party backup software. These backups may be scheduled with greater flexibility than Time Machine provides.
    Basic Backup
    For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
         used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
         requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
    3. Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things
        Time Machine.
    Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
    Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
    All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
