Keeping roaming charges down abroad - Bold 9700 on Orange

I'm going to America this week and want to keep roaming charges to a minimum. I have turned off data while roaming on my Blackberry so shouldn't receive any emails, Twitter/Facebook updates. However, if I want to just download emails say once a day could I buy a small data package and just turn data back on for a short time?
Also if WiFi is still ticked will I still be able to connect to the wifi where available even when the data roaming is turned off?
Thanks!

Hi,
While roaming you can use the free Wi-Fi services to cut down the cost of International roaming charges. Therefore, use Wi-Fi and turn of your mobile network. Your email, BBM etc will work without any problem.

Where to buy my iPhone 5 from? I will be living in Canada for a while after the next 6 months. And returning to the UK regularly so I want an unlocked iPhone so I can use a local sim in Canada and a local sim in the UK to keep roaming costs down. But which model?
Thank you for you help in advance

If you buy an iPhone at the UK or Canadian Apple stores, it should work on the GSM frequencies in both countries. LTE will not work as the LTE channels are different in each country and each iPhone sold in each country is only compatible on LTE channels of that particular country. Other wise it should be fine.
Be aware that only the Apple store (retail or online) sells the unlocked iPhone in the UK. I think the situation is similar in Canada. (It is in the US).

  • International Roaming Charges, $4,500

While in India on a business trip, ATT suspended use of my iphone - not for lack of payment, for excessive charges incurred using the phone. I paid the charges incurred my first week in India, $1,700 and they turned the phone on again. Another week in India and three days in UK and Spain I returned home to a call stating I owed another $2,800.
I have the ATT's international plan and tried to use wifi for data but realistically, when you need to check email, you use what is available as often as needed.
Short of never using the iPhone for business again, does anyone have a solution?

The only way to keep your charges down is to turn off Data Roaming and only use WiFi while travelling. Data roaming is very expensive, even if you have a special plan for it. You have no idea how much data you are using at the time, unlike when making a phone call or sending SMS.
For me it is not an issue. When I travel I purchase a local SIM and put it in my legally unlocked iPhone. Due to Australian regulations on the locking of phones I have this option. The USA does not have this option, legally.

  • Why can't I get 0S6 on Bold 9700 (Orange)?

First post so sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere....
I live in England and have a Blackberry Bold 9700 on Orange. For months now I've had the desktop software version 6 and have recently installed an update for it of 6.1; yet it always says there is no update available for software on my phone. However, when I took my phone in for repair they updated it to 0S6, so did they use a leaked version then? The reason I ask is because that phone eventually got replaced with the same make and model but came with the older software, and I miss OS6 but am wary of downloading a leaked version.
So was just looking for some advice really - will Orange be releasing 0S6 for Bold 9700 or will I have to get a leaked version and if so how do I do this, hopefully without causing any problems to my phone?
    Any help is much appreciated.

    Hello,
From a PC, you can install any OS package to a BB via this procedure (which includes a link only to official OS versions):
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. You can even use a different carriers OS package by simply inserting, between steps 1 and 2, the deletion, on your PC, of a file named VENDOR.XML. Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • Bold 9700 Charging Pod doesn't Sync

    Hi,
On ShopBlackberry.com, I came across this for the Bold 9700:
    http://www.shopblackberry.com/_blackberryaccessoriescan/cgi-bin/pd.cgi?frompage=category&page=produc...
Where, under the features, it says:
    Features
Combines with any travel or data cable charger to charge and/or sync with a BlackBerry smartphone
Display smartphone while recharging, taking calls, watching videos or listening to music
I picked one up today from my mobile carrier, since it was quicker and no shipping fees. However, it doesn't sync! It charges fine when connected to a wall socket, and my computer. However, my computer dosen't recognize it while its in the pod.
Is this normal behaviour for the Bold 9700 charging pod? Could it be a misprint on the website? Or, are there possibly 2 versions of the charging pod?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I've already installed all that, and set everything up. Syncing with the microSD cable directly works fine.
for your information the cable is a Micro-USB cable and not a MicroSD.
MicroSD stands for a type of flash memory card (Micro SDHC Card). Most recent BlackBerry devices have a MicroSD slot.

I'm just trying to understand why it seems there's only one pod available for the Bold 9700 from RIM
yes there is just one pod for Bold 2. See my previous answer to understand how it is designed. I know it is deceiving.

I didn't buy it from there, only because it seemed like the same product was available for slightly less from my mobile carrier, and obviously without any shipping fees.
indeed. I still don't understand why the same product is 3 or 4 times more expensive on the RIM shop than on Amazon or in a carrier store.

  • Bold 9700 roaming and no wifi

Hello I have an unlocked Bold 9700 but haven't used it in 7 months. I decided it would be best to bring my old 9700 camping with me as I am worried about the safety of my z10. When I put my sim card in the 9700 it says that I'm roaming on Fido (I did this in my bedroom). Then I tried using the wifi to look up a solution and it refused to use my wifi connection (it kept asking me to use my data). Is my phone FUBAR or is it just being stubborn?

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
If the SIM you used was from your Z10, then you have an extra step necessary. BB10 devices and legacy devices work very differently, with legacy requiring a BIS plan from your carrier in order to function properly. BB10 devices don't use BIS. So, if you indeed used that same SIM, then the legacy device didn't receive what it required from your carrier because your carrier isn't delivering BIS to that account. You need to talk to your carrier to determine how to do what you are attempting to do...they may or may not be able to activate BIS on that SIM for a temporary period, and then equally challenging if they do to shut if off afterwards (on some carriers, if BIS is on the plan, then the BB10 device won't work).
    Good luck!

  • I have an IPad2.  I've received two different ideas on charging the battery.  One person indicates I should let the battery run almost down before recharging; another person indicated I should keep it charged closer to 100% .  What is the best process?

I have an IPad2.  I've received two different ideas on charging the battery.  One person indicates I should let the battery run almost down before recharging; another person indicated I should keep it charged closer to 100% .  What is the best process for the best battery life over time?

I do exactly as Thomas Reed does. Always have from day one. Going on 15 months now and I get at least 10 hours of use out the battery every day. No matter how much juice is left on the device when I go to bed - I put the iPad on the charger - doesn't matter what the battery gauge says - I plug it in and let it charge all night.

  • Can I gift my unlocked iPhone 4S to my dad abroad without roaming charges?

I have a new iPhone 4S that I recently got SIM-unlocked by Verizon in preparation for my trip to Dubai (to visit my dad - he lives there). I don't quite fancy the phone as much as my earlier Droid X, so I want to give it to my Dad instead.
    Two questions:
    1. When I return from Dubai, I will activate the Droid X on my line in place of the iPhone 4S. Will this impact his ability to continue using the iPhone with his GSM carrier? I am guessing it shouldn't - I don't see how Verizon would be able to disable the phone?
    2. He travels to India fairly frequently, and since India has both GSM and CDMA (he will be using a GSM carrier there) I run a risk of roaming charges if the phone automatically connects to CDMA when the GSM signal is poor. Can I be hit by such charges from Verizon even when the phone is no longer on my line?
I guess I will find out these answers in a month or so myself, so if no one else knows, I can post the answer here when I find out for myself.

    Hello riggedveda,
Congrats on your trip to Dubai! I always wanted to go to Dubai! I hope that you have a wonderful time while you are there! Feel free to post pictures so the community members can see! I'm sure that you are aware of the many benefits of having an unlocked global device like the iPhone! May I ask does you dad have a Verizon Wireless mobile number? If he does then he can use your unlocked iPhone 4S on his number! Also, the great news is that once the iPhone 4S is unlocked, it can be used on an international carrier, even if it is not active on the line that it was unlocked on. So if you decide to let your dad use your iPhone while in India with an international carrier then he is free to do so. Since the Verizon Wireless SIM card is not in the phone, he will not incur any roaming charges from us. Below are a few recommendations that I would like to make prior to giving the device to your dad.
Sync all of your current information from your iPhone to your computer using iTunes.
Sign out of iTunes on the device and on the computer that the iPhone syncs with.
Perform a factory reset on the iPhone so your information won't be mixed with your dad's.
Verify that the device is deactivated from your mobile number before he leaves to Dubai.
Insert the international SIM card in the iPhone when he arrives in Dubai.
Activate/unbrick the iPhone using either wi-fi or a computer with iTunes and a data connection. (See link below)
    http://support.verizonwireless.com/how_to_use/activating_iphone_4.html
Even though the steps provided in the link are for activating Verizon Wireless service in the US, the steps are the same with an international SIM card while traveling abroad. If you have any additional questions or concerns then feel free to reply to this posting for more help.
    Thank you & happy traveling!...

  • BlackBerry Bold 9700 doesn't connect

    Hi,
I just got my BB Bold 9700, but I already managed to make a problem. I disconnected it without safely ejecting it. Now it only charges through USB and it doesn't connect to sync.
Does anyone know how to make this work again?
    Thanks in advance!
    Daniel

Daniel, Greetings, and welcome to the BlackBerry.com Support Forums.
Have you tried a complete shut down of the Mac, and restart, as well as a reboot on the BlackBerry device?
With the BlackBerry device powered ON, remove the battery a few seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot.

  • Roaming charges due to attachments

I do a lot of international travel and use my phone to consult my business emails. I often receive large attachments such as excel and powerpoint files which are a killer on roaming charges. Is there a way just to receive the header messages, and pull down attachments on request ?
    thanks

        Hello Rep19,
No matter the amount, I believe it's important that you're being billed correctly.  I know I wouldn't want to pay for international charges if I was in the United States.
I understand this can happen sometimes when we live, travel, or work near a border.  We often partner with the bordering Cell provider to try and find a place where we both can work and still provide the best coverage to our customers.
One suggestion I have while in your home area is turning on a feature called "Home Only". This feature on your phone will keep you from placing that call if you're on the international tower.
I'm unsure of what phone model you have to provide directions, but its under menu or settings.
    Please advise!
    Thanks,

    Any help?

    HI John,
So you've tried emptying the Safari cache cleared cookies???
According to that link they are referring to *an older version of Safari (3).*
Go back to that page, scroll down and click No. You can at least provide feedback.
Since you are running Snow Leopard, try opening Safari in 32-bit mode.
Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode.
Relaunch Safari. See if that makes a difference.

  • Can't keep a charge

    Hi all,
Lately, my phone just can't keep a charge. I'll charge it overnight, and by 4 p.m. the next day, it's already down to half battery life. This phone is about a month and a half old, so I don't know what's wrong!
    Thanks!

  • Updated to DM 6 cannot connect my Bold 9700 anymore

Hi there. I'm new to the blackberry community. I got a Bold 9700 three days ago. I was using DM 5, provided with the phone. It was working great. Yesterday I've updated to DM 6. At first it worked  perfectly, but today it just won’t work. It asks for my device password than it keeps forever "Connecting". I tried to uninstall it and install DM 5 back with no luck. I have a friend with a curve 8520, different carrier, different computer, experiencing the same problem. Can anyone help me please?

    Hello,
I would recommend removing the battery to restart the BlackBerry smartphone and then trying to reconnect again.
    Thank you
