Keeping same Events and Projects on 2 external HD - Best Practice

I would like to receive your suggestions on this working flow. (I am also interested to get some confirmation that I am doing the right way).
I use FCPX since few weeks. Coming from iMovie and FCE.
I import videos from external drive "C" on 2 different external drive "A" and "B" with settings to copy the files there.
In this way I hope orignals remain on "C"
I edit using "A" or "B" and the resulting Projects remain on the same drive.
I copy Events and Projects between "A" and "C" to keep them uptodate after some work. I do all copy with FCPX with both drives connected.
Will this workflow let me to keep Events on both drives according the latest editing ? (If I reopen each project on the same drive of its events A with A and B with B).
Then I like to group projects under folders (move not copy) again working only inside FCPX.   This removes the project form the Project folder and let me to save a new version of the next editing workflow with the same project name. But if I try to save the same project again it will be renamed with extension (fcp1).
This way will bring me to a serie of projects instead of replace the previous with a new version. I would prefer to limit this to a few versions: any way ?
Last: I like to keep also a copy of projects on the main HD. Only Projects with its Render files without Events.
Will it be possible to use this Projects moving them to one of the 2 HD "A" or "B" and go on ?
Thanks for your time.

Hello Zebber28.
I do exactly as you propose doing in terms of having a 500GB Western Digital elements portable external HD which I simply connect up every three months or so on a top up basis.   I don't disconnect the primary external HD while I do this as I don't need to.   I simply plug into the port in the keyboard.
Just make sure you properly eject the new HD each time you use it, otherwise it's all pretty basic.

  • If i move my iphoto & iMovie source library / Events and Projects to an external hard disk, due to size, will my existing slideshows work ?

I need to move my photo library and Movies (Events and Projects) to an external hard disk as my 700gb drive on my iMac is now full (*see note below)
I have brought 2 Samsung External drives (3TB each) which I plan to partition each for Photos and Movies i.e 2 partitions on each drive, and will use one for use with iPhoto and iMovie, and the other drive for a dedicated backup. I will backup the remainder of my iMac hardisk to a seperate disk.
What has just occured to me is that after I have moved the libraries I cannot see how existing iMovie projects and iPhoto Slideshows will work, as each Application will be looking for the source files on the original iMac hardisc (I assume).
I am running Snow Leopard v10.6.8 ( I did not want to upgrade to Mountain Lion as I was told the iPhoto and iMovie changes were a 'backward' step. However I now want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, for security updates reasons mainly, and so need to free up my hard drive.
Can anyone advise on the best way to proceed ?
    * - the iMac hard disk become full very suddenly, possibly due to duplicates, as I have noticed duplicate events and clips in my iMovies event library. I have noticed that some events are also now not showing, with message 'No video clips match the current selection' (I have not search criteria set).
    Thanks

I was planning on manually backing up my external to the time capsule - but is there a way to set it up to back up automatically instead?
Time Machine will backup up automatically - you can not have your iPhoto library on the same volume as the TM backup (it will not work and it would not be a backup)
Dragging the iPhoto library to any external drive will backup it us also
I was also thinking about having the library copied to another external (I mean we're talking about irreplaceable photos here) - would i just drag a copy of the library to that drive as well?
Yes - that is a good idea - I run TM giving me hourly backups and a daily clone of my entire system giving me a bootable backup - plus do an occasional TM backup at our second home so I have one off site
is it possible to deal with my imovie library in the same way? so all my movies and photos are on my external?
Probably - but I use iMovie very little - better question for the iMovie forum

  • Moving iMovie '09 events and projects onto an external hard drive

I have moved my events and projects from my laptop to my external manually by going into the library and dragging them over (not being aware that it's possible to move them within iMovie 09). They appear in the event list, on the external, and behave just like the originals on my laptop. Are they complete files, even though they weren't moved in the approved method?
I tried moving one additional file (not folder) from within iMovie, but it won't let me click and drag it to the external - it only highlights it, along with any other folder that gets in the way. Why is this happening?

The event files you moved are fine. But by moving them outside of iMovie, you'll have broken any links to them from the Project files (which are just lists of references and instructions). You can recreate the projects using the new event files if you want.
iMovie will only move to drives formatted as MacOS. Many drives come formatted as FAT32 by default (because it's a format readable on both Macs and Windows PCs. You can reformat the drive using Disk Utility (use the Mac Os Extended (Journaled) option, but that will erase any data on the drive. However, it will let you move files within iMovie, which is the safe way to do it.
One major reason why iMovie won't let you use FAT32 is that FAT32 has a file size limitation (2GB, I think) - and video files are routinely way bigger than that. And just to preempt another possible question, you can't use NTFS format because Macs can't write to NTFS drives

  • Moving and copying events and projects to an external hard drive using Imovie09-Source clip is missing

Some background on what I am doing is importing all of my home video into an event in IMovie. Since DVD's can only hold about 2 hours of footage, I am making a new project for each 2 hours so I can burn the footage onto a DVD. I want to make space on my internal hard drive so I am trying to move the projects that are completed to an external drive. Because I also don't want to lose any footage I have imported into the event I am also copying the home video event to the external drive. (didn't want to move it yet until I know what i am doing, just in case it is lost somehow).
I tried moving a project to the external drive (it was a slideshow for my daughters first birthday which contained photos and video clips from the event that was already copied to the external drive). The project did move to the external hard drive but on the video clips there is a yellow triangle that says source clip is missing. I am moving and copying from within Imovie and NOT the finder so I don't understand why it says the clip is missing when it is definitely a part of the event that is already on the external drive.
What is interesting is the source clip is missing error showed on the first birthday project but it did NOT show as an error when I moved the 2 hour home video project. (All of the video in these projects are coming from the same home video event)
I am trying to make sure that when I move the projects permanently off the internal hard drive and onto the external drive, that I am not losing any part of my projects. I want to be able to easily move them back and forth if needed without any missing files.
Any suggestions as to why I am still receiving the yellow triangle?

As I can't see what you are doing, I can't tell you what you might be doing wrong.
You could try trashing the preferences.
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

  • Transfer Final Cut Pro X events and projects to external hd

    Hey guys!
Can you help me transfer my final cut events and projects to a external hard drive cause my hd is full

ok... i was thinking if the project looked for the media like
    ->user->final cut event->event->(wanted clip_
or if i grabbed both the event and project folders and moved them to my external hard drive which when you have final cut open it will see...
so i grab the two final cut folders in finder move them and then open final cut will final cut not kno what is going on?
because if final cut just looks for the event in
    final cut events/event/(wanted clip)
instead of its original location (like windows would)
    mac/user/movies/final cut event/event/(wanted clip)
    then that would work?
it should work... does that makes sense? haha

  • Final Cut Pro Trial Event and Project Folders

I've just started my Final Cut Pro X TRIAL for 30 days on my Mac OS X version 10.9.4. I've used Final Cut Pro in a class before, and normally, I save all of my events and projects on an external drive to save space on my computer's hard drive. BUT THERE ARE NO EVENT AND PROJECT FOLDERS under my 'movies' folder in the finder window. Not only do I want to finish up a few projects I've already started elsewhere with saved projects and events, I'd like to be able to save projects and events externally so I can work with them anywhere. I started a first project and event to see if the event and project files would be created in my "Movies" folder, but the only folders created (which was in movies) were "Final Cut Optimized Media" and "Final Cut Original Media". How can I create "Final Cut Events" and "Final Cut Projects" folders in my movie folder, so that when I drag events and projects into these folders, they'll show up in Final Cut? Is this just for the Trial?? Please help...

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for your help. I've been trying to update my events and projects into the new libray system, but I'm failing. Maybe you can help. I've tried several ways, but mainly when I got to choose the old event and project files to be updated (either be going to File - -update libraries and events - -locate... or by File--open library--other..--locate...when I highlight my old event and project files (which are on an external harddrive), it either says 'Final cut can't find any events or projects to update' (in the case of updating) or (int eh case of opening) it just keeps making me choose a folder inside the project (with all the different kinds of media and changed files)...argh. Does that make sense? Any help? Thank you.

  • How can I move my Events and projects to an exterior disc?

When working in FCPX, I have been getting an alert that my (laptop) startup disc is nearly full, and I should delete files to make more space.
How can I move my final cut events and projects to my external drive?
I have already copied the folders Final Cut Pro Events and Final Cut Projects to a LaCie 2T drive, but I hesitate before emptying the trash on my laptop, afraid that FCPX will not be able to see my projects/media.
I am running FCPX 10.0.5 on a MacBook ProRetina with version 10.7.5 OS
Thanks for any help you can give me.

In that version, as I recall, you can simply move the projects and events from one mounted drive to another working from within the FCP UI.  Since you've already  copied the files, see whether they open. You may need to use the Organize (or Consolidate – can't remember) command if your files are not all within the moved event.

  • Moving Events and Projects from one location to another on the same hard drive.

    Hello.
I've searched in the FCP X User Manual, on this forum and in Google, but have found no explanation of how to do this, so I'm posting this here in hopes that someone in our community will be able to help.
I've previously stored my FCP X Events and Projects folders on an external 3TB hard drive, because there is more room on it than on the internal 1TB hard drive, but, since then, I've worked with other media apps, for video, photography and audio, the files for which are also stored on the external hard drive, and this has created a bit of clutter with no folder structure to keep it tidy.
I like an organised file structure on my system, to keep it uncluttered, easy to navigate and efficient to use, so I put all the files for my photography, video and audio apps into their own folders, which are, in turn, stored in their appropriate folders for Audio, Photography and Video, and those three folders are stored in a folder called Media, and then I directed each app to its own files.
The only app with which this has been a problem is FCP X. While there is a way of relocating projects and events from within FCP X, it allows the user to move them from one hard drive to another, and not, as I want, from one place to another on the same hard drive.
I'm not sure if it matters, but perhaps it's relevant to mention before the next paragraph that the files that had previously been imported as events are, to save hard-drive space, stored in the events folder as shortcuts to the original files, which are stored elsewhere on the drive, rather than as duplicates of those files.
In Finder, I copied the Events and Projects folders to their intended new locations and tried in the app to link the events and projects to their new Finder location. It seemed to have worked, until I moved the original folders to the Trash. On re-opening FCP X, it was clear that the linking hadn't worked. I returned the original folders from the Trash to their original location, but that didn't entirely reverse the problem. I noticed also that, in the original and duplicated Events folders, the shortcuts had lost their links to the original files stored elswehere on the drive.
Fortunately I had run a backup before starting, so I restored the original folders and the app from the backup, and all was back to normal.
I'd be grateful if anyone could advise me on whether or not it's possible to move FCP X events and projects from one place to another on the same hard drive with the app's compliance.
    Thank you.

  • My external hard drive holding half my iMovie events and projects has crashed: how do I restore the events from another source?

My external hard drive holding half my iMovie events and projects has become corrupted.  I have now downloaded all the same files (from a backup in the cloud) to another hard drive - but iMovie is not "seeing" those events or movies in that external hard drive.  Q1 Is there a way of rectifying that?  (I.e. telling iMovie to point to the relevant folders or files on the new external hard drive)
Q2 I have a TimeMachine backup of the corrupted drive in another drive which i keep elsewhere.  Is it worth me attempting to restore from that backup? And if so where can I restore to (as the original external drive is corrupted) and how do i go about that restore process so that the events and projects re-appear?
thanks in advance for your help.  (I thought i would check re Q2 before embarking on the wrong method!)

When I right click on an image, then went to Go to Folder in Library, it pulls up the new external hard drive where I made the new link. When I try to work on the photos, the image still says file image is offline or missing. When I right click on the image to Show in Finder, it says the image could not be used because the original file could not be found. I eventually did click on their locate and found the image. When I linked those two together, a few minutes later ALL the "?" went missing and now IT WORKS!!!!
    That was weird!
Hope this helps someone else in my predicament.

  • Should I keep Events and Projects after Exporting my edits?

When I finish editing a video I export it, usually at Large 960x540, or sometimes HD, (even though my camera doesn't do HD) to my hard drive. I make a fair few movies, and often need to burn them to disc/dvd, which I can then do by going back into iMovie and simply exporting to DVD.
The problem now is that my iMovie events and Projects are taking up so much space, so my question is - does burning an exported file to DVD result in a lower quality outcome than burning a project directly to DVD? I'm basically assessing the feasibility of deleting all of the stuff out of iMovie and just keeping my final exports?
    Thanks, Dan

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking. however, it seems that your events are taking up too much HD space. External HDs are cheap these days and you could sill save the raw footage on an external HD, There are various ways to migrate it there so that iMovie still recognizes the sources of the project, even when the sources (event clips) are stored on an external HD.
I would NOT have/use a DVD as my permanent record of a movie, DVD is just too degraded. HOwever if you really want to rid yourself of the events and open up space, you could export your movie (as you have done) into a Quicktime movie. I have found those look as good (almost or just as good) as the imovie project pre-export. THAT file you could STORE anywhere, on your HD, on a flash memory , or burn on a DVD (as a storage medium, not converted to a DVD) and you will then have a good to excellent version of your movies.
The projects take up little space, they are just information of where to find the events music etc, it is the Events that take up space. SO I would buy an external large HD and move them there, or if not, I would make sure before i trash the events that I have a good looking exported AT version of my movies (share large or HD as you mentioned).

  • How to get iMovie '11 to recognize events and projects on external hard-drive?

Hello, my old iMac recently crashed and i bought a new one.  I have restored all of my iMovie files from an online backup service to an external hard-drive.  Now, I would like to add all of these events and projects into my iMovie library on my new computer.
So far, I have tried File->Import->Import Movies and then browsed to the Movies folder on my external hard-drive where all of my iMovie events and projects and videos are stored.  However, iMovie will not recognize that this folder contains any iMovie files.  Only if I browse down to each individual event folder will it then recognize and begin importing the file.  Is there anyway to get iMovie to recognize all the folder, files and events as it was on my old computer and not have to re-import everything event by event?  Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Hi
You must do this the right way.
    • EXTERNAL Hard disk - MUST - be Mac OS Extended formatted
Nothing else will do - for VIDEO !
    • The Moving of Event's and Project's - Must be done within the iMovie Application
Folders named iMovie Event's and iMovie Project's - can not be moved via Desktop/Finder - as links back to iMovie will break and can not be mended.
    My general note on this:
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly.
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project

  • How to move Event (not necessarily connected to Projects ) and projects to new external drive

I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and iMovie11 9.0.4 have a had very stressful time trying to clear down the Movies folder from my internal drive and get it across to a new external hard drive, as my 700gb drive on my 2009 iMac is practically full. I have taken a full back-up and also created a new 1.5 TB partition on the external drive. However I do not know how to get the Events and Projects across, and for iMovie to know that every thing is now on the new drive.
Initially I copied the 2 folders using finder, which seemingly worked but then I discovered that iMovie did not display the the new events, so I deleted the 2 folders from the external drive and tried manually moving the events in iMovie. This was very slow, with lots of spinning wheels and eventually iMovie crashed. So I moved the new Event copies I did manage to create into trash, but still iMovie was crashing.
I then, thinking something had become corrupted, I  tried to restore the Events folder and Projects folder from my backup, but that did not work as I got a message saying the there was not enough space to do the copies (why does it need extra space as I assume it would be overwriting the existing folders ?). So in desperation I did some forum searching and ended up deleting the com.apple.iApps.plist. Now iMovie seems to be working fine, and is displaying al the events from my internal drive (I have ejected all other drives), and I am back to square one (hopefully), however for some reason the 'month' folders I had previously created in each Event 'Year' have disappeared and all the, for example 2013 events, are now under the 2013 folder with no Month sub folders( I assume this is something to do with the preferences I had deleted ?)
I am hoping someone can direct me on the right path for getting the Events (not all of which are used in Projects) and Projects across to the new external drive, so I can free up space on the internal drive (and install Mountain Lion - my end goal).
I have been  trying to do all this since 0600 this morning, so if anyome can help it would be very much appreciated.

G'day.  I am using iMovie 11 and need to clear disk space.  How can I do that using an external drive, leaving me the option to go back and make changes or access old events or projects from that external drive?

The slightly bigger question is whether you want to move all movie content to the external drive (essentially meaning that drive will always need to be attached when you're working with your videos), or whether you just want to archive older videos off to the external drive.
If you want to move all videos, then just move the 'Movies' folder in your home directory to the external drive, then create an alias of the external 'Movies' back in to your home directory. Now the 'Movies' icon in your home directory will point to the external drive and everything will just work (as long as the external drive is attached when you launch iMovie)
If you want to archive older movies then each Movie should have its own subdirectory within your Movies folder. These can easily be moved off to the external drive, and moved back should you ever need to work on those movies again.

As you said folders are moved to external disk but have you checked it should be like this
    For Event
external disk>Final Cut Events>your event folder.
    For project
external disk>Final Cut Projects>your project folder.
