Keeping Scroll Positions While Browsing Through Finder

Hi,
I'll do my best to explain the problem without confusing anyone.
I've noticed that in views like Coverflow, if you scroll down your folder list, open a folder, then click the back button, finder always returns to the top of the folder list and NOT the folder you had just opened, therefore losing the position you had previously scrolled to. (Hope that makes sense).
I was wondering if there was any way of preventing Finder from doing this?

This has nothing to do with AI. Turn off using thumbnails in Windows Explorer and adjust the file dialog accordingly thereafter. In short: Your file associations are busted up by some program and it is trying to eitehr impose its own icons or context menu stuff which in turn interferes with normal file operations. Sounds exactly like you have some rubbish "preview" extension installed...

When I open a URL pointing to a PDF file from Safari, the PDF file is opened by the AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin. Too many times the multi-page PDFs scroll too fast up and down uncontrollably from the touch Pad.
Is there a way to control the scrolling speed and make my reading experience better?

You need to remove both, while Safari is closed.
You can use the Trash - Put Back command to replace them right away (again, close Safari first) or drag them from the trash to some spare folder, in case you want them later.

My Macbook pro keeps quitting Safari while browsing. I have to shutdown the computer and restart to access the internet or my email. I t works for about 5 minutes then quits

My Macbook Pro cannot sustain Safari for more than 5 minutes. Once I hit return the "working" icon just keeps going round and round. The only way to access the internet or my email is to totally shut down and then restart.
Is there something I can check to see if there is a virus or is this a common problem. I just returned from a trip to the states and had no problem using my laptop there. I have had no problems until about 6 hours ago.

Finder quits while browsing certain directory

while browsing the Finder on a computer connected to my home network, via ethernet, the specific directory, in this case the Downloads folder, quit unexpectedly and kept doing so every time i tried browsing the directory.
i already located and deleted the Finder preference file and restarted the computer, to no avail.
The strange thing is that the Downloads directory is the only one that causes this problem, but none of the others.

you could have a corrupt file in that folder. it could be the hidden .DS_store file. log into that computer directly (not remotely) as the user whose Downloads folder is doing this. close all finder windows and run the following terminal command
rm ~/Downloads/.DS_Store
then try connecting to this computer remotely again and see if the same thing happens.

How to avoid blinking / moving of rows in a data grid when you restore the scroll positions

By Default when an update is made on a data grid, it scrolls to top row. To avoid this when we save the vertical and horizontal scroll
positions and restore the scroll positions after the update, it causes a blink in the grid (or moving / jumping) of rows. Is there a way to
avoid this jumping of rows?
In JavaScript this can be achieved by overriding the scrollToTop / OnLoad methods of datagrid to directly scroll to current scroll
positions instead of top row. Is there a way to achieve similar feature in flex / actionscript?

I am calling validateNow().. Also, using verticalScrollPosition to restore the scroller as in the link that you posted.. Reposition is working fine, But the bug filed is regarding BLINKING / JUMPING when this happens (i.e. this blinking is caused because after datagrid edit, during reload the scroller tries to move to the top by default, then it repositions itself to current edited row as the verticalScrollPosition property is overridden ).. I have to get rid of this blinking.
In Javascript it is dealt by overriding OnLoad method of datagrid to directly scroll to current scroll position instead of top row during reload so that there is no blinking.

I am not sure what flex datagrid method to override.. Theres no method like load? What is the datagrid method that is called by default during reload (after datagrid edit) that causes the scroller to go to top?

Keep layout position when using Find/Change?

When using Find/Change in InDesign CS4, each occurrence of the "Found" material is centered in the window, so the page moves around with each find. Is there a way to keep the page in a fixed position when searching through a document?

Actually, I can think of a shortcut for the hard part: The user uses the
regular find/change UI to make all their settings. Then, they run the
script, which will simply use the settings in the UI. Nice, huh! So you
could get a listBox of all the finds -- select the entry and you get
taken to the desired location. Click the "change" button and the change
is made. Here's a proof of concept:

Obviously very rudimentary: but this does work in CS4. If the list is
too long, though, the change button will disappear off the bottom of the
screen. Also, really once the change is made, the item should be removed
from the list, but there's a bug in CS4 that makes it impossible to do
that simply, if I recall correctly (or was that only a tree list?)
Also, I have found that the only sure way of getting the entire spread
to show is as I've done it above (and it would need much more error
checking than this -- for instance, overset text).

Are you downloading iTunes form an Apple website or somewhere else? If the answer is somewhere else, try downloading it from Apple. Click on iTunes in the black menu bar above and go from there.
Let us know what happens.

Possibly related to the OP's question, I wish we could get the composition page to scroll when typing a reply here on the forum (while using my Pre plus).
Quoting a reply fills half the text box, then once I reach the bottom of the box, I can't scroll any further downward to complete my reply...

When the applications are next launched click and hold on the icon in the dock and select 'options>keep in dock'.

Try a reset: Press the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for ten seconds until the Apple logo appears. Note: No data will be lost

You can try to delete the compatibility.ini file in the Firefox profile folder.
If that still doesn't help then try a new profile.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

Keep grid scroll position across updates?

I have a JBoss app server status monitor that uses the XML
status page to update a Flex grid control. I can scroll down in the
list, but when the grid auto-updates, it puts the scroll position
back at the top of the grid. This is very inconvenient for the
user. Is there any way to maintain the current scroll position
after calling the refresh method of the collection that I've set as
the data provider for the grid? Or will I have to grab the scroll
position right before I update, call the update, then reset the
scroll position? Thanks!

The latter. Re-assigning the dataProvider will completely
redraw the tree.
If you can update the dataProvider using the API, then this
will be avoided, but I suspect that will be more difficult than it
is worth.

Over the past several weeks while browsing Firefox i got a re-direct to a window similar to a Google search not a re-direct to a particular site. I would just arrow back and keep going until it would repeat.

I don't know what version of Firefox I was using. I think it was 4.0 I have just downloaded the newest version 4.0.1 and will see if this continues or has been fixed. It has never done this while browsing with I. Explorer so I assume it to be a browser issue. One of the blogs I read said it was a Firefox issue.
The re-direct would occur usually right after I landed at a new web site or it might occur after I started browsing the site. I don't think it is a virus issue. I use Vipre home edition. The page looked just like a search listing window just like you would get in Google after searching for a subject. I would just arrow back to the site I was at and start again. Sometimes I would have to repeat this several times until it went to the correct site. Any ideas?

Temporary NFS mount keep being mounted while server is powered off

I was doing some performance testing using different file protocols (NFS, SMB mainly).
The last test was with NFS, I mounted on the command line the nfs exported directory, did my test, forgot about the moment and shutdown the NFS server. Since then OS X is bugging me every 2 minutes with a popup (which has the focus!) which states "There was a problem connecting to the server 192.168.1.250". The mount is not visible via 'df' so I decided to reboot the machine... But even after rebooting it, the popup keep on poping up!
The setup was: OS X 10.8 as NFS client; FreeBSD 9.1 as NFS server (in a virtual machine hosted by a Linux machine on the same network). The command was:
mount -t nfs 192.168.1.250:/mnt/test ~/mnt/
I restarted the FreeBSD VM, suddenly the NFS export was mounted, this time as /Volumes/test. I unmounted it this time using:
sudo umount /Volumes/test
It did work successfully. I shutdown and deleted my VM, and some hours later the popup reappeared!!
How to get rid of it? Or more explicitely where is the configuration file where the mount is still explicitely present?
(it is not in /etc/fstab, nor /etc/auto_master) I did a huge grep using the IP address on the disk, and I got only log errors in /var/log.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:

Copy (command-C) the selected text to the Clipboard. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered. This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. It won't be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3

Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal.
