Keeping some emails on an IMAP account

Is there a way to keep emails on particular devices, but not others, on an IMAP account?
I get emails in Apple mail on a desktop, laptop, iphone, and ipad. Is there a way, for example, to delete an email on my phone but have it stay on the other devices, or is that just the way things work (delete it one place, it deletes everywhere) with an IMAP account?

Not with an IMAP account, no. With IMAP, the messages are always and only on the email server and the mail applications on the various devices are just looking at it. So if you delete a message, it will by necessity disappear from all devices connected to that account. The only way to remove a message from some devices but not others is, where possible, to copy the message to a local folder on each device on which you want to have the message. That can be done in Mail and most other Mac OS X email applications, but not on an iPhone or iPad.

    Since it is affecting all your devices also, try going to the e-mail web site and seeing if you can log in there. Who is the e-mail provider?
    Try deleting the pass word from Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.
    If that doesn't work, try deleting and adding back the e-mail account.

    Because someone's trying to mislead you into giving them your iTunes Store login information. Forward all such emails to [email protected] and then delete them.
    If there's an actual problem with your iTunes Store account, you'll be told at the time you try to purchase or download something.

    Ouch, I'm afraid we have a damaged pref file, likely the main...

    Trouble is it holds al the most important info, so I'd try this first...
    Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
    Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
    Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
    Instead of deleteing that main plist, we might be able to use PrefSetter to make a new good copy...

  • Error using multiple email addresses in IMAP account

    Thanks for reading - any help, advice or direction you can offer is very much appreciated!
    Here is my situation: I use a single IMAP account with several email addresses. If it's important to know, they are all set up as aliases, so I can receive mail in one single account at all of the addresses and can send email from any of the addresses through the same SMTP account.
    This behaves radically differently in Mail (iPhone and iPad) under iOS 6 than it did in iOS 5, and I need the behavior I had in iOS 5.
    I am seeking help in figuring out how to make iOS 6 Mail behave the way iOS 5 Mail did.
    Here's how I set it up in iOS 5: I used the primary email address (also my login for the IMAP/SMTP account) to set up the account on the iPad. This all worked. Once it was set up, I went back to settings and added the other email addresses as a comma-separated list in the "email" field after the primary one.
    Then, when I went to compose a message (from mail, or from any other app), the default "from" address was the primary e-mail address (the first one listed), and it allowed me to tap on the "from" field and select a different one.
    This changed in iOS 6, like this:
    I set up the account the same way as above. With just the primary e-mail address it was fine. But when I added the other addresses and saved it, it seemed to choose one address at random from the list as primary (not the first one, not the last one, not the one first or last alphabetically, just one in particular - and the same one each time I tried this). Then when I compose mail, it defaults to that alternate email as the "from".
    So:
    I need to have it default to the primary email address as the "from," I need to have all the alternate emails available to me to choose from, and I need to have it all set up as one account. I have tried to set up a second account on the iPad with all the alternate email addresses, but since the IMAP and SMTP logins are the same, the iPad won't let me.
    Any ideas, suggestions, direction, solutions, etc. are very much appreciated!

    For now, I've come up with the following work-around:
    1. Leave your multi-account as-is set up on your iPhone, but remove your preferred default e-mail address from the list
    2. Set up a new e-mail account with IMAP access (i.e. Gmail or whatever)
    3. Create a new IMAP e-mail account on your iPhone/iPad with the details of this new account for the IMAP (receive) settings, but with your original e-mail account's SMTP (send) settings. Also, set the "Email" field in the account setup to be your preferred default e-mail address.
    4. Set this new mail account as the default in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars
    Now, when you create a new message, you should see that your default "from" address is correct - since it is the only choice for the new mail account you set up in iOS. As long as the SMTP settings are correct, it doesn't matter that your IMAP settings don't match.
    You should still be able to select any other "from" address as well, which will use your original multi-account settings, which are also correct.
    All of your received mail will come in through your original multi-account inbox, and your new account's inbox will likely stay empty.
    It seems like I'm forgetting a step here, but this should give you the right idea for a workaround if it isn't exactly right. Feel free to add corrections if you find them.

    Pop mail accounts must be set up to 'leave messages on the server'.
    check this before using.
    * Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
    or
    * menu icon > Options > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
    select: 'leave messages on the server'
    optional: select: 'for at most xx days' this will delete anything older than specified number of days select 'Until I delete them' when you delete an email it will be deleted off the server.
    click on Ok to save settings.
    Pop mail accounts only look at Inbox and download whatever has not been previously downloaded regardless of whether it has been read or not. They cannot access nor download from any other folder on the server.
    If you wanted to download emails in other fodlers, you would have to move emails into the Inbox in order to download them and this may not be very practical in your situation.
    What you can do is synchronize your IMAP folders to get a copy downloaded to your IMAP mail account.
    Then go into 'offline' mode to stop any further synchronizing as synchronized folders do get updated.
    MozBackup tool could now be used to backup the Profile as synchronising created mbox files which contain emails.
    You can also do the following to get a copy outside of the IMAP mail account:
    Create the same folders in 'Local Folders'.
    Then right click on email and 'copy to' and select Local Folders and the folder you require.
    Putting a copy in Local Folders means these emails are also on your computer and they are not influenced by anything you do in the IMAP folders.
    You would need to backup emails in these folders.

    Yes it is, it's a phishing attempt to try and get your account and payment details - iTunes accounts don't get 'frozen', and emails from Apple tend to be personalised (not 'dear customer', 'hello' etc.), and they are written in proper language. If you still have the emails then you could forward them to Apple : [email protected]

  • Mail won't find emails in gmail imap account

    I'm having this problem since I moved to the Mailboxapp on my iPhone.
    I changed the gmail account to using imap instead of pop3.
    Now, when I search in the Apple Mail app, it doesn't find messages with the "any" search directive.
    E.g. searching "theo" with any, won't show the mails contained in the imap inbox, sent or important folders on the gmail imap.
    If I search for "theo" with from, it finds the emails in the in the imap inbox. If I search with to, it finds the ones in the sent imap folder.
    Is this expected behaviour?

    It just won't display messages matching the search term in the from field when using the any search.
    It will only find them when searching with the from criterion.
    I also want to point out that I followed these Instructions for setting up Mail for Mailboxapp:

    If you do follow those instructions, "Store draft messages on server", "Store sent messages on server" and "Store junk messages on server" will be checked under the Account settings' Mailbox Behaviors' tab.
    But searching *should* still work as expected imho.

    If emails are being deleted, then it's not the Apple products, it's the POP account.  When one device reads an email, it's removed from the server, so the other devices can't get that same email.  That's a POP account.

  • QUESTION: How to keep folders populated in an IMAP account

    Hello all,
    I use IMAP to connect to my corporate email system and for receiving and sending it works great. I follow the GTD model and use folders very aggressively to work to attain Inbox Zero. It really helps my productivity but I have a problem when not connected to the Net.
    I often want to search mail for specific content, but get no results when I know the message exists. When I go to a folder where I think it might be, I get a popup telling me the folder is on the server and the path. All fair, but I want everything on the server to be on my local repository, not just at the top of the account but in every folder. Is there a setting I am missing? I'm not trying to find new mail in a folder, I want all mail in a folder to be in sync with the server and therefore stored locally.
    Any guidance will be appreciated.

    You can synchronize accounts from the Mailbox menu. Select Mail Help from the Help menu and search for "sync imap." Look for "Syncing IMAP and Exchange 2007 accounts."
    As for the previous suggestion it will indeed download what you want depending upon which option you select from the drop down menu. It will not populate with messages already read, but it will download in the future from the point where you set the option. You can then manually move the old messages into the local mailboxes. It's a one time inconvenience.

    I have MobileMe and 3 IMAP accounts and for some reason my 3 IMAP accounts keeps getting disabled and I would have to go into preferences and re-enable the accounts.
    Does anyone know what's happening here? I also just done a reset sync data on MobileMe to see if that's the cause... Please let me know if you have any idea what may be causing this problem...

    I had the same issue and managed to solve it.
    Go into Mail>Preferences>Accounts
    Then in the account information tab, at the bottom should be outgoing mail server (SMTP) and click the drop down box
    Mine had a few different servers in it so i went into edit SMPT server list. Click advanced and it will tell you which ones are going from which email address.
    Delete the ones you dont want, and it should work or instead of deleting click use only this server, i imagine that will work to
