Keeping songs on shuffle no longer in i-tunes library?

Hi - just bought ipod shuffle and have put cd's into i-tunes library then onto i-pod. Then I have been deleting cd's from i-tunes library as I don't need them there. Then have put another cd into i-tunes but when I transfer this one, others that I have removed from the library, are removed from the shuffle, any song still in the library stay on the shuffle. Is there any way of keeping songs not in the library, on the shuffle when adding new tunes?

Yes you can. You simply have to change the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos". You can get details here: Managing content manually on iPod
One major word of caution. If you delete songs from your PC and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem. You should consider investing in an additional internal or external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up songs you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD. Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. If you have not done so, you may want to restart your computer.
That message (about the song file not found) means iTunes cannot locate the song file where it expects to find it. Are you sure you can still play the song in iTunes (?), because you may get a yellow exclamation point next to the song, meaning the same thing; iTunes did not find the song file where iTunes expected to find it.
The consolidate command would not help if iTunes can't locate the files.
That might mean they were moved or deleted. If you do a Get Info (from right-click) on one of those songs, the Info window should tell you the expected location of the song file, on the Summary tab next to Where. Follow that path (using Windows) to see if the song file is there.

I cannot open my itunes. I keep getting a message saying "The file 'i Tunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes"? Anybody else had this problem since downloading the latest version and how to sort it?

Never mind sorted it out lol. Somebody did a system restore of a week or so. I had done the update during that time and it was lost. Just redownloaded itunes from the internet and its working fine now.

I noticed this message quite a few times over the last few months. Now the album that I just purchased won't save in i Tunes. I am really looking for a way to fix this so I can enjoy my music, especially since I have already been charged for it. Lost ability to add multiple copies of a song to Shuffle

I lost the ability to add multiple copies of the same song to my iPod Shuffle since updating my software.
Since updating my software, I lost the ability to add multiple copies of a song to the shuffle. Before the updates, I could add as many copies as I wanted. I liked having multiple copies of my favorite songs, so that I could hear certain songs over and over again when I was in the linear play mode.
I also don't have a manual update option on my shuffle. I actually dont know if I ever had this option. I just noticed others were talking about it and that your site mentioned the option, so I was trying to use the function to avoid the automatic updating and inadvertent loss of songs that may no longer be in my library. I guess I have to live with the auto-update feature, since I think the Shuffle is simply lacking this feature that is found in the more expensive iPODs.
I just updated to iTunes 6.0, hoping that this latest update would fix my problems, but there was no change. I still have the problem with not being able to ad multiple copies of the same song.
Any ideas?

Thank you for the tip about renaming the song. I will try it, although I think it may not help since I don't have any way to uncheck the autofill option. As it turns out, the Shuffles don't have the option for a manual update. If I change the name of the songs, it will simply erase the original song, since it will no longer be in the library. I think there is a chance it will work, until I reinsert the Shuffle to make changes. That would be OK, if it worked temporarily, so I am hopeful that it might work. I may also be able to trick the Shuffle by adding the song from a playlist, in which I have renamed the song only on the list, not in the library.
This just bugs me, since I could add multiple copies before the updates.
I just tried to change the name of a song on a playlist, but shuffle changed the name everywhere in the iTunes application. It looks like iTunes may be a little like Microsoft Word, in that it starts making corrections all by itself. In general, I dont like it when things start changing all by themselves.
I may try to ditch the updates and go back to the original software.

Duplication of songs in my new I-Tunes library

I don't know why numerous songs are duplicated in my new I-tunes library on my new Dell computer. Others have single entries. Some of the duplicated song entries have an "exclamation point" next to them. I don't know what that means. When I tried to delete the DUPLICATE songs from my I-Tunes library, then the REMAINING song entry would not PLAY...and the message said that the SONG could no longer be found on my computer.
I still have the DELETED songs in my recycle bin and I could restore them. But I also wonder if they are in DUPLICATE IN MY I TUNES LIBRARY, are they taking up more memory space?
Any help is dearly appreciated

If one copy of each duplicate has the same Date Added, then you could sort the list of duplicates by that date and delete the ones with, or without, that date

One way friends of mine have done it....use iTunes to burn a music CD with the songs (presuming it can still do that, haven't tried it in a while)
THen close iTunes and open windows media player. Use that to convet the CD file to MP3 (media player's default is to pull things in as wma, so you may need to change the preferences to mp3, or i'm pretty sure wma's work in power points)
Once media player converts the format you can insert it into your powerpoint.

@caragam, if the songs are no longer in your purchase history it means either they have been hidden or the original items are no longer available for sale on the iTunes Store or you are logged into the store with a different Apple ID.
To see if they have been hidden in iTunes pull down Store > View my AppleID. Enter your password when prompted. In the middle of the screen, click "view hidden purchases." See if the purchased items are here. If they are unhide them and go back to your purchase history and re-download them.
If the purchases are not hidden and you do not have a backup then the songs are gone and there is no way to recover them. This is why we keep backups.
If you used a different Apple ID to purchase the song, log out of the store and log in with the appropriate Apple ID and download the song. Be aware this could trigger a 90 day lock out of the other store account so make sure you really, really want that song.

Song count - Shuffle vs All Music

When playing in "Shuffle" mode I see the song count in the upper left corner as 1 of 2897. Yet when going to "Settings, About" I see there are 3053 songs loaded on the iPod. I've owned this 20Gb unit for about 3 years and I don't remember these ever being different. Anyone know why?

Well I think it finally dawned on me why I'm getting a difference in the counts when playing in shuffle mode vs the total number of tunes on the iPod.
The newer version of iTunes has a checkbox to indicate,
"Skip When Shuffling". And yes I did take adavantage of this setting to exclude certain songs when "shuffling". Songs such as Jethro Tull's Thick As a Brick. Although a great song it's 43+ minutes long and not something I care to listen to when I'm traveling and can't fast-forward to the next tune. The iPod usually resides in the trunk of my motorcycle and I can't skip a song quite as easily as one would think.
So you iPod gurus may want to take notice that the iTunes option of excluding during shuffle may throw off your tune counts.
Sorry for the unnecessary intrusion but my memory is not what it used to be.

Bar with song time, shuffle & genius options wont appear

Since i downloaded the new 3.0 software, when i listen to music or a podcast, the bar with the song time, shuffle and genius options wont appear when i touch the screen. This also happens when i watch an youtube video. When watching youtube, after the video starts, i cannot get the play/pause/FFW bar to appear.
Every once in a while it will work, but 90% of the time it will not.
Any advise is appreciated!

You probably need to tap the screen for a shorter time, the quickest of taps! If you hold your finger on the screen for too long, it will not case the bar to appear.

After playing 60-70 songs on shuffle battery life is almost all gone.

Well the subject says everything...
Basically after I play 60-70 songs on shuffle, the battery life is almost gone. (After being fully charged) I don`t know if this is part of the reason why it only plays that many songs, but I do turn my ipod on an off a few times. (About 4-5 times?) But I don`t think that`s a good enough reason for the battery to be so low after playing only about 3-4 hours. I don`t have any songs that go over 5 minutes and I don`t watch videos or put on the slideshow while playing music. And the only times I touch the click wheel is when I want to raise/lower the volume or skip to the next song. So I don`t know why it only plays for such a short time. Does anybody know why it`s doing that? And is there any way I can fix this?

Try just letting your ipod play one song over and over, and see how long it lasts. If it still has the same problem, get the battery replaced.

Play ends when song ends - Shuffle and Continuous Play not working

I'm pretty sure I did not install an update prior to this starting. Since the problem began, however, I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled to see if that would solve the problem and it did not.
I typically play songs, on shuffle, from my main library. When I open iTunes shuffle is automatically selected and I click on the play button to choose a random song. Since this past thursday when I click the play button nothing happens. I have to manually choose a song to play. Once the song has ended iTunes does not choose another song (if on shuffle) nor does it play the proceeding song on the list (if on normal play). In order to play another song I have to choose another. Once that song ends I have to select another and so on.
I have checked the settings and I don't see anything that could be effecting the way iTunes plays the songs.

Somehow, all of my songs where not checked....

Can iTunes take songs from the Shuffle and create a new album library.

The iTunes/shuffle synchronization is (mostly) a one way street, and the shuffle can only belong to one computer at a time.
