Keeping the library small with vaults

Still waiting for the Apple Store to get the first shipment of 1.1. They have no idea when that would be.
I do mostly model shooting and once I'm done with the images I will burn them to DVD and get them off my computer. Only a few will remain which will be used for my book and web.
So the question is:
After a shoot I create a vault with the latest shoot, burn it to a DVD. If I remove the vault from Apreture, will that keep the library to a manageable size?
By naming the vault with the models name and date I will remember what's on the DVD. Is there anything else I need to keep in mind?

I think you are confusing the vault with the Aperture capability to export projects. Sounds like you want to use the export projects capability to burn your DVDs. Then you can remove them from your Aperture library and re-import the project from DVD whenever you want to work with them again.
I'm pretty sure that each time you restore a vault, it replaces THE ENTIRE Aperture library, so using multiple, project oriented vaults as your backup scheme is a recipe for disaster. Also, if you are going the DVD export route, I'd strongly recommend you export two copies of the project before deleting the files from aperture. So you have a backup and a backup-backup. Can't be too careful with your digital assets.

All my finished projects that are in the Library infected with the same symptoms and it happens only after I went into the problematic project.
I tried to open a new project and everything works
...I also tried throwing Recent Files, in the past It solved the problem ,not this time ...
the problem is that this project will take me a long, long time to rebuild

This recently happened to me.  I am a novice, but it seemed like that project got corrupted some how.
    I deleted it.
Went to time machine and picked it up again when I knew it was working ok.
I lost a few hours of work, but not the entire project.
Once I had the project back from time machine, it worked fine (but like I said, I lost a little bit of work).

Using Windows 7 and LR 5,  when I look at the Keyword List a certain keyword has 7 pictures but when I check the Library Filter with that keyword 350 pictures are shown which includes the 7 pictures that have the keyword.  Why does the Library Filter showing pictures that do not match the query

    Dan,
Here's what's going on in the catalog you sent me, "Joel & Caitlin's Wedding".  There is the keyword "gwenn", which is explicitly assigned to 7 pics. But keyword "schwartz" has a number of synonyms, including "gwenn", and it is assigned to 25 pics.  There is no overlap between the two sets of pics.
I discovered these two occurrences by doing Metadata > Export Keywords, opening the exported file in an editor, and then searching for "gwenn".  I found two occurrences of "gwenn":
    gwenn
    schwartz
        {gwenn}
From this, you can see that the keyword "schwartz" has 9 synonyms, of which "gwenn" is one.
The filter criterion "Keywords Contain gwenn" will match the 7 pics that are explicitly assigned the keyword "gwenn", and it will also match the 25 pics assigned the keyword "schwartz", because that keyword has a synonym "gwenn".
This illustrates the behavior I mentioned above: The criterion "Keywords contains x" will match against any of a pic's assigned keywords, any of those keywords' ancestor keywords, and any of the synonyms of the assigned keywords and their ancestors.
So LR is operating correctly here, if not in a way that's easy to understand.
It appears that you are using the synonyms of "schwartz" to represent individual members of the Schwartz family.  A better way of representing family relationships is to have a parent keyword "Schwartz", with subkeywords for each family member, e.g. "Gwenn Schwartz", "Joe Schwartz", "Jane Schwartz", etc.  Repeating the family name in the subkeywords has a couple of advantages. LR usually only displays the "leaf" name of a keyword, so instead of showing you just "Joe", it will show you "Joe Schwartz", helpful when there are a number of different people whose first name is "Joe".  Also, if you ever export your pics to other software, it may not understand the LR hierarchy and won't show the parent keywords, so again it's more informative to see a keyword named "Joe Schwartz" rather than "Joe".

  • Can I keep the classic look with OS X ?

I need to switch from OS 9.0.4 to OS X (because the film scanner that I'm gonna buy required OS X)
but I love the metallic appearance (Classic) of OS 9.0.4
    It's simple, clean.
Can I keep the classic look with OS X ?
I know it comes with a different look (and from what I saw I hate it !) I want a computer, not a toy for a kid with "lots of colors and big shiny buttons..that look like a candy.... yeaahh!
I want the new technology but not the new look.
The new look seems so crowded
    Now a stupid question:
does the X have a desktop like OS 9 :meaning an empty space where you can put 50 files or just a few ?
Or is it like a open files ?
In wikipedia they show an image of the OS 9.0.4 desktop (which look exactly like what I have) then they show an image of the OS X
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Xcodescreenshot.png
and it looks like a open folder. Perhaps they are comparing apples (ha funny !) with oranges but if I were them, I would show 2 desktops (or 2 open files ) not one desktop for OS 9 and something else for OS X
Maybe it is silly to ask but you never know.
I like to see my folders and files present on the desktop. Otherwise it looks like a open folder with View-->List instead of View--> icons.
Hey I said it is a stupid question !!

    Hi Michael,
"lots of colors and big shiny buttons..that look like a candy.... yeaahh!"Not sure why you say this unless you were looking at the Widgets screen? The Mac OS X is "brushed metal" for the most part.
does the X have a desktop like OS 9 :meaning an empty space where you can put 50 files or just a few ?Yes.
In wikipedia they show an image of the OS 9.0.4 desktop (which look exactly like what I have) then they show an image of the OS XThat's not it. This is it minus any open windows.
I like to see my folders and files present on the desktop. Otherwise it looks like a open folder with View-->List instead of View--> icons.OS X also has "column view" and IMO is much faster to navigate through your files and folders.
    You'll get over OS 9

  • ITunes with another ripper - keeping the library up to date

I use dbPowerAmp to rip my music, it handles music in LOTS of formats and converts them in a very efficient way. When it is done ripping the music, it places the songs in my My Music subdirectory. I asked iTunes to "Keep iTunes Music Folder organized", but it does not "discover" any newly ripped music. Is there a function in iTunes where it will discover new music and add it to the library?

  • Keeping the library up to date?

In my household we keep ALL our music ( ~15,000 tracks, MP3's and AAC's)  on a networked hard drive so it can be accessed from any computer in the house.  All the music is carefully organized in a very specific folder scheme.  All the computers in the house run iTunes, thus they each have their own iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes Library.itl files.
When a new song is added to the collection we have to manually go through the house and add it to each computer's copy of iTunes.  But sometimes someone forgets or the computer isn't booted or it's travelling so the collection on the external drive gets out of sync on that PC's iTunes.   We end up with songs in our collection that the iTunes on a particular PC doesn't know about.
Is there anyway to update or refresh the library on a particular PC so it can make sure every song on the networked hard drive is in the library?
    Thanks in advance.

Yes. Use the 3rd party folder watching program iTunes Folder Watch. Unlike iTunes itself, iTunes Folder Watch will notice if there is new content in any designated folder, and will automatically add it to the iTunes library.

  • My album artwork is scrambled and manually changing the artwork does not seem to keep the right artwork with the songs! Any suggestions?

I manually re-synced my ipod with all of my music because I had typed in a bunch of names where my library had previously said track#/unknown album, and when I was done syncing, a good percentage of the album art was scrambled.  When I try to manually change the artwork on the inappropriately tagged albums or delete and re-sync the album, it does not keep the artwork that I assign to it or the correct artwork that is associated with it in itunes.  Is there anything I can do to fix this?

It seems like I've seen this... I think you should un-sync all music (in iTunes) hit Apply and then resync it all back on.

  • I have my iTunes media on an external drive but I would like to know if I keep the library file back to my internal hard drive so it gets backed up by Time Machine.

I have all my media on an external drive for space. Is there a way I move the library file back to my internal had drive so that Timemachine will keepa  backup of the file. Recently my library file became damaged and I lost all my playlists and playcounts and all that good stuff. Thanks for your help.

I never lost any media mind you just the library file that tell iTunes where everything lives.
On this point, you can keep a copy of of the "Itunes Music Library.xml" file, which contains the itunes metadata for your music library (songs & playlists).
Obviously, you would still need the files themselves for this to be of any worth, but if you ever find yourself in the same situation you can use the .xml file to recreate iTunes as it was. Keep in mind that you must import the .xml file into iTunes for this to work, you cannot simply move it via the finder.

  • Get Info "Change All" button doesn't keep the proper "Open With" app

I have a small but annoying problem that appears in Leopard 10.5.2 (been there since original 10.5.0 install) that I have tried to troubleshoot but can't solve.
    The problem is:
-With some of my file types, the wrong "Open With" application is displayed when I view a Get Info for that file type. So to fix this, I open a Get Info window on one of those types of files, and choose the PROPER default application in the "Open With" slot. This works, and then the new proper application name now shows in that slot. So then I click the "Change All" button and apply to all files of that file type. I receive the warning that I will be changing ALL files of that type. I choose "continue" because that is what I desire.
However, once I do that, (click Change All, then Continue button), the old, wrong application name jumps back the Open With slot! So the new, correct application choice doesn't "stick".
Oddly enough, it sort of DOES work, because if I then re-click in the Open With slot, although the old, the wrong application is back listed again, if I look up above that name, then my actual desired application is listed in a list, and it has the word (Default) beside it.
So if I do actually now double click any file of that type, then the proper application DOES launch and open the file.
But why does the Get Info window still display the wrong, non-default application in Open With? And furthermore, this causes all file types of that kind, to display the WRONG icon in any Finder window. They of course display, the icon of what is in the Open With slot list.
I am having this problem only with two file types and apps. (Cubase and Pro Tools---DAW audio apps). All of my Cubase files display a Pro Tools icon, and show as Open With: "Pro Tools" when of course it should display Open With: Cubase. As stated in the Open With list, Cubase is indeed there among other programs and it has the word (Default) beside it. So it sort of works when launching files. But I still cannot get Cubase to "stick" and stay in Open With after Change All!
Can anyone offer any tips on what might cause this and what fix is needed?
    Thanks so much in advance!
    Wade

Well, I tried rebuilding the Launch services with the command listed but still no luck. After having no luck with that and deleting caches, etc....I also, went to my home (user) directory and in Preferences, I deleted the com.apple.launchservices.plist file. I restarted and checked and still the same result.
Also, I want to emphasize again that the file type I am discussing DOES actually launch with the correct application. (Cubase files in my example).
But it is just annoying that ALL of my Cubase files display the Pro Tools application icon, and in Get Info they are listed to open with Pro Tools. But they actually do launch Cubase if double clicked.
And one other VITAL note....if I open Get Info for one of these files, and change the Open With from Pro Tools to Cubase....then that choice DOES "stick" and retain. (if I "don't" also click Change All)
It's only when I click "Change All" that it DOESN'T stick and the list selection jumps back to Pro Tools. I hope that may offer some clarity.
Thanks for the tips but I am still back at square one.

  • Is the Adobe Digital Edition (e-reader from the library) compatible with Adobe Reader X

I have Adobe Reader X on my computer, and recently downloaded the Adobe Digital Edition so that I can read books from the library. However, when I attempt to download a book, the Adobe Reader X opens, and I get the message....
XXXX book could not be opened because it is either not a supported file or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't properly decoded). Any idea what is going on and how I can correct this issue?
    Any responses are appreciated...

    Hi, Char.
Since your question doesn't relate to our CreatePDF service, I'm moving your question to the Adobe Reader forum.

  • Iam using 2 different i phones on the same itunes account, Can I keep the contacts seperate with syncing?

I have one itunes account and am using 2 iphones, is it possible to keep all the "contacts" seperate from the two devices, so that I dont have to have all of my husbands contacts in the phone book?  Or do I have to use 2 different itune accounts?

Your contacts are not part of your iTunes library.  iTunes only syncs contacts with your phone from a supported program such as Outlook or mac Address Book.  If you are trying to sync you contacts to the same program they will be merged.  You could, however, set up two contact groups within Outlook, one for your contacts and one for his.  Both groups would still besynced to both devices but you wouldn't have to look at the contact group you weren't interested in.  Another option would be for one of you to continue to sync with iTunes with, for example, Outlook and the other sync contacts with another service such as Google or iCloud (be sure to uncheck Sync Contacts on the Info tab of the the iTunes sync settings for this phone).

  • FCPX 10.1 : how to backup the library file (with LaCie SilverKeeper or other backup software)

Hello... I was using FCPX with an external hard drive (A) with all "events" end "projects" folders.
Then, on a regular basis, I was copying hard drive (A) content to another hard drive (B) using LaCie SilverKeeper. All new or modified content in these folders was copied. With the new 10.1 version, no more folders but a "library" file which is not recognized by SilverKeeper.
So how to backup library files without starting a new copy each time ?

Thank you for your input, nevertheless, I may have miss something but I am used to work with all my media on an external HD.
Then, on a regular basis, say each time I have an important editing step, I backup this external HD to another external HD.
With FCPX, I have chosen to integrate new media in the new library file. Consequently, these media files are not in folders, but inside the FCPX file.
The problem is that when I want to backup all this (including media files inside FCPX library) this library is not recognized by backup software.

  • CSA : Do CSA keep the allowed events with exported policies.

    I've created a server Group on a CSA-MC.
There are 2 sites, and all events on the first CSA (1st Site) will be the same on the second Site. Because the applications on each server are the same. Only the IP address change. (redundancy)
First, the group is in learning mode, and there is no policy defined.
    So all event are allowed.
    Question :
After the learning mode, I want to export the group and import this group in the second site.
Do CSA keep all allowed events that have been discovered in the 1st Site.
    Best regards.
    Antra

The Export utility exports entire rule modules and policies (not individual rules), including the accompanying application classes and configuration variables. Because of communication channels established in the original configuration, some site-specific imported configuration information (IP addresses) may not work on another server. Exporting an item will also export related data. In particular, exporting policies will export application classes and configuration variables referenced in rules within the policy. Exporting a group will export associated policies but not hosts. The Export/Import functions are not intended to be used as a backup/restore mechanism as they do not preserve system specific information such as group-host memberships
