Keeps checking mail

I think I might have a problem with my iPhone. It checks for mail whenever I use it, regardless of whether I go to the mail app or not. I've checked all of the settings and it's set to manually check for mail and never fetch the mail without me asking it to, but it still does.
Has anybody else had this problem

Add another email account to see if it affects that as well before you delete and re-add the account, switch the current Mail account "off" in Mail.

  • How to Keep Checking Mail Without Screen Lighted?

I apologize for asking so many questions but I just got an iPod yesterday and it is my first iGadget of any kind.
I would like for it to keep checking mail and signal me when new mail arrives.  I understood iPods would do this -- it's one of the main reasons I bought the thing.  I've set it to give an audible signal when new mail arrives, but it doesn't seem to work.  I've set a thing called Notifications to alert me except between midnight and 7am.  But, it turns off (I think it calls this locking) every two minutes so if it can't check while locked it's pretty much useless for monitoring mail.  I suppose I could set it to stay on continuously, but I imagine that will run the battery down in short order.
So, are there some special settings to make it check mail and tweetle new messages while "locked"
Incidentally it doesn't seem to alert me of new mail even after I turn it on.  I have to activate the mail application to see if there's new mail. I guess it's possible there's a delay while it connects to the network and by the time it's connected I've already gone into the mail reader.

First of all, this is Apple Support Communities, and it was made for questions.  You can ask as many as you need to, as long as they're in the correct "community".
Apple Mail app is slightly annoying in this aspect.  Unless you are signed up for iCloud or Me mail, you wil have a long delay before you get alerted, even while you're using the device.  To help slightly, make sure you go to your Inbox in the mail app before exiting.  Also, some mail providers make their own apps, such as Gmail, that alert you instantly. Try searching the App Store for your Mail provideo's app.  Hopefully Apple will fix this someday.  I hope you can solve this!

  • Treo keeps checking mail even though set to manual update

I have my email update set to manual.  But my 800W keeps checking for email.  It's running my battery down.  Short of deleting the email account and starting over, what am I doing wrong?
Background: When I first got the phone, I stupidly set it to check mail every few minutes until I realized that ran my battery down in about 5 hours.  I set it to 'once per day' and it worked fine.  Then a couple of weeks ago, I temporarily set it to 5 minutes or something like that for a specific situation.  I then tried to change it back to once per day and/or manual.  The value shows 'once per day' on the options page.  But it ignores it now.  Not sure how often it checks.  But i get email notifications almost instantly every time an email arrives.  And my battery is dying again.  I've tried changing it around several times, rebooting, etc.
Anybody ever seen this?  Am I missing something obvious?
    Thx

Thanks for the response.  I had long since tried everything you suggested.
I did quite a bit more testing and googling, and  I think I've resolved it.  But there are definitely some serious problems (My feeling is that these are code defects) in the 800w that caused this.
    1) I created a new email account on my 800w, taking all of the default values
    2) I set the email scheduler refresh rate on the account settings page to 1 day.  But I found later that it made no difference what I set it to.  Same results
    3) I have my own hosting business and host my own email pop server.  So I have easy access to the POP logs.  Here is a snippit from the pop logs with "refresh rate = 1 day":
    12/12/08 21:07:31 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:08:40 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:09:52 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:11:04 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:12:16 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:13:28 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:14:40 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:15:53 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    4) Note the time between each line.  It's basically exactly 1 minute + 10-13 seconds.  The 10-13 seconds is the processing of the POP call.  When the POP call ends, it waits precisely one minute and checks again.  I want to point out that there isn't even an OPTION on the refresh menu on the 800w to refresh once a minute. But it is indisputable from the log on my mail server that this is indeed what is happening.  (I set up that pop mailbox specifically for my treo, and no other client mail app is accessing it.)
    5) I changed all the values on the refresh time menu, and even turned off 'Send/receive when I send" option.  I wasn't sending anyway.  But I was just grasping at straws.
    6) I then discovered that there are TWO places to set the refresh rate (???? that's a good design????).  If you open the inbox and select Delivery Preferences from the menu, there is ANOTHER checkbox to "Connect and check for messages every...." with an entry field to enter the number of minutes.
    7) Ok.. this is the defect in the code:  That checkbox was OFF, and the entry field was gray.  That obvious has to mean that I don't want to autocheck anything.  (and that is the default way it comes up on a new account, which makes sense).   But it appears the checkbox is being IGNORED in the code.  It was indeed checking.  And I suspect the empty grayed 'minutes' field was probably returning 0 or something like that to the code.  So ignoring the checkbox and having a zero minutes refresh rate, it was probably defaulting to a minimum of 1 minute.  But it should NOT be refreshing at all with that checkbox off.
    8) I turned the checkbox ON and set the value to 15 minutes:
    12/12/08 22:18:34 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.*******************.com
    12/12/08 22:34:09 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.*******************.com
    12/12/08 22:49:46 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.*******************.com
    9) Note that as soon as I checked the checkbox and set the refresh to 15 minutes, that is indeed precisely what I have in my POP log.  Oh, yeah... by the way... the much more obvious "Automatic Send/Receive" setting on the account menu is still set to 1 day... (why is that page and option even there???)
    10) So in summary, you have one scheduler where the user can set a value that is completely ignored.  And you have a buried checkbox that defaults to off and the code apparently doesn't check it and assumes it's always on.
I don't need any additional help.  It's working now.  But I think someone in development needs to take a serious look at how this is working based on my scenario and analysis above.
    Thanks.

  • Computer Keeps Checking Mail While Sleeping

This has only started happening maybe for a couple of weeks - never did it before, and I haven't changed any system settings...  But after putting the Mac to sleep, I will keep hearing the "new mail ding" sound all night - it's very disturbing!  Why would this happen when the computer is supposed to be asleep?  (I have lowered the volume so I don't hear it, but I still want to know why it's doing it and how to stop it!!)
I'm using Mountain Lion on a Mac Pro desktop from 2009 if that makes any difference...
    Thanks for any help!

Check your email Preferences.  Check how often you want your email client to alert you for mail.
Another thing you can do is to make sure you quit out of your email client prior to putting your computer to sleep.  Why have it open if you & the MP are going to be sleep?

    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • TS3276 Mail keeps checking a pop server related to an account I deleted.

    Dear Friends,
A few months ago I upgraded to Lion and all Mail accounts were moved to the new version of Mail.
A couple of weeks after I deletes the pop account related to my company web server. All the messages not moved to different folder were deleted and the pop server and SMTP server 10.1.11.100 disappeared from the server list.
I realized from the "Activity" window that Mail keeps checking it for new e-mail.
I deleted Mail's preference file without success. I searched with spotlight for an occurrence of "10.1.11.100" in files and system files without any result.
Is there any further step I can take to stop Mail from checking this server that doesn't exist anymore?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    lS.

Check the smtp outgoing server list and see if one still exists for that account. If so, delete it.

  • Best practice for keeping a mail session open in web application?

    Hello,
We have a webmail like application where users login with their IMAP credentials, then are taken to an authenticated area of the site where they can manage different things about their email account.
Right now the application is opening and closing a mail store connection (via a new javax.mail.Session) for each page load based on the current logged in user credentials. To me this seems like it would be a bad practice to keep opening and closing a connection each page load.
Are there any best practices for this situation? It would be nice to be able to open the connection to the mail server on login, then keep that connection open until the person logs out, session expires, etc.
I can probably put the javax.mail.Session into the HTTP session, but that seems like it would break any clustering functionality of tomcat. This would be fine if the machine the user is on didn't fail, but id assume if they failed over to another the mail session would be gone. Maybe keeping the mail session in the http session, checking for a connection, then first attempting to reconnect with the logged in credentials before giving up would be a possiblity?
    Any pointers would be appreciated

If you keep the connection open across pages, you're going to need to deal with
timeouts - from the http session and from the mail server.
If you don't keep the connection open, you're going to need to "resynchronize"
your view of the store/folder with each operation, in case the folder is modified
    by another session.
The former is easier in the common cases, especially if you don't care how gracefully
you handle failures. The latter is more difficult in the common cases, but handles
failure better, and in particular handles clustering better. You'll need to measure it to
see if it meets your performance and scalability requirements. You may need to mix
the two approaches to get acceptable performance.

  • Hotmail PW updated, Can't use Mac book Mail program to check mail

    Hi,
I updated my hotmail.com user password .  I can log in on a hotmail web browser to check mail.
But if I check mail on the Mail Program on my Mac Pro,  the Mail program keep showing me
"Mail can't connect to the account Hotmail.com".
    Please help.

Thank you LexSchellings for your reply.
    I did the following procedure:
    * disabled the existing hotmail.com account,
    * add a new hotmail.com account with the same info.
    This solved my problem.
I found the non working hotmail.com account with incoming and outgoing servers are "live.com :-
For hotmail.com account , they should be:
    Incoming mail "imap-mail.outlook.com",
    Outgoing mail "smtp-mail.outlook.com"

I'm not sure if I understand your qustion, "What do you have one currently set?"  The mail that's coming in does not update on my phone.  The phone shows at the bottom, "Connecting'" but it never connects.  It'll time out before the connectionis made to add any new mail or remove the mail that has been deleted.

  • How to check mail already read or not?

    Hi everyone
I am developing an application using javamail api.
I have no idea how to check mail is already read or answered or seen using javamail api.
I need to fetch new mail every time. I used DELETE flag ,its working fine but it also delete mail permanently from inbox.
I want to fetch new mail and already fetched mail is also reside in inbox. but not fetched next time.
    Pls help me.

Either I'm not understanding you, or you're not understanding JavaMail.
First, the POP3 protocol supports no permanent flags, as explained in
    http://java.sun.com/products/javamail/javadocs/com/sun/mail/pop3/package-summary.html
You can set flags on messages, but they won't persist after you close the folder.
If you set the DELETED flag and close the folder and expunged deleted messages,
the messages are gone for good.
    That's not a JavaMail limitation, that's a POP3 protocol limitation.
Again, as explained in the link above, to determine which messages are new you'll
need to keep some state in your application about which messages you've seen
and compare that state with the current state of the INBOX. You can use the POP3
specific UIDL command to help with this.
    Does that help?

  • ICloud keeps checking pop3 account

    Hi,
iCloud is giving me a headache when it comes to checking mail. During my Mobile Me periode you could have it check a third party pop3 mailaccount. Worked just fine. Then I read that iCloud didn't offer this feature, but that wasn't a dealbreaker for me. I wasn't going to use that old pop3 account any longer anyway.
I did however have my Mobile Me account migrate to an iCloud account, without removing those pop3 settings. I figured since it didn't include the pop3 feature, It would just go away.
    But it hasn't.
My iCloud mail now keeps checking my old pop3 account, but the problem is that there aren't any settings one can alter to prevent this.
And just to be clear: my old pop3 account has no settings to forward my mail to iCloud so the solution can't be found in that area.
Is there a way to solve this annoying problem ?
Kind regards and merry Christmas everybody
    Dirk

    Hi Laura,
I could resolve the issue for myself.
In both mailboxes we have seen this issue were hundreds of entries in the "Accounts->Pending Requests" Dialog, all concerning the different pop3 accounts. Most pretty old actions from 2013. Maybe there were conversation errors with the pop3 server in the past - I don't know.
So I guess when the client in online mode tried to start the pop3 session, it first tried to work on the pending requests queue what resulted in the gwsync.exe crash.
I deleted all items in the queue and started the gw client again.
    Everything works fine now.
So, the solution for this is: check the pending requests and delete all old stuff...
    Regards
    Tobi

Hi. Mail App stopped checking mail suddenly. I was able to check my mail at 10:15 this morning. Now when i tell it to get mail it does nothing at all. I repaired permissions and reboot and still no luck. Any ideas?

You would need to populate checked items in a collection

then have a dynamic action on refresh of the region to repopulate the checkboxes with some clever jQuery.

I have not been able to sync my mail with iCloud on my MacBookPro (Lion OS).  Everything else has been syncing fine for the past two months, but when I go to System Pref/iCloud/and try to check Mail, it asks me to choose an iCloud email address. When I put in my regular @me.com email, it says that address already exists (of course it does - it's mine!) and wants me to choose another one.  But I want it to sync with my stuff.  What can I do?  I haven't been able to find help anywhere online...  Thanks!

You should have signed in with that address in the first place, but there is a workaround: go to System preferences>Mail, Contacts@ Calendars and add your @me.com address as an account there.
