Keeps forgetting WEP password

I use WEP as my wife's PC doesn't seem to manage WPA.
Once or twice a week my MacBook forgets the WEP key. When I go to Network Settings and edit the entry for my network the setting says:
Password: none
When I reselect 'WEP password' and check 'Show password' half of the password is missing
So I re-enter it, turn airport on and off and usually I get back on-line. Sometimes it refuses to accept the password and I have to plug in a cable...
After a few days it works again.
(All the time my wife's PC is working fine - and I've tried rebooting the Access Point, a Netgear WGR614v4 latest firmware)
...and the MacBook has all updates including the latest shutdown squashing SMC, and it has happened since that update.
So is this a bug, or wot?

Might be a bug, try this even if it says it's a bit
different from your problem, has worked on some WEP
as well as the stated WPA issue...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482
Actually, I have done this a few times when I have had the bug (not from following the instructions, it seemed the 'obvious' thing to try to reset things to me). So it must be a good suggestion
It didn't help.
Other than that, I'd run Disk Utility from the CD/DVD
to Repair Disk & Permissions,
then use Keychain
Access to Repair Keychain, or replace that Key.
I use SuperDuper for backups which runs Repair Disk before each cloning. I'll try these suggestions the next time it happens.
Might even be a HW issue such as RAM.
I'm starting to think my MacBook is one big hardware issue

  • ICloud on iPhone suddenly keeps forgetting my password (and other sync issues)

All of a sudden iCloud on my iPhone keeps forgetting my password. Sometimes I'll enter it, everything will seem to be fine and moments later it will prompt me to renter my password. This is extremely frustrating and has happened seemingly out of nowhere. I haven't been tinkering with setting or anything like that.
I'll often be prompted to enter my iCloud password when doing things that have nothing to do with iCloud either.
Another strange thing is that Notes, for example, still syncs correctly but all my reminders are gone. My iPhone calendar is blank now too. All of the apps are turned on in the iPhone settings. Everything on my computer is there, as well as on iCloud.com.
I'm really baffled as to why this is happening all of a sudden. Could the problem be on Apple's end?
This is happening at a really inconvenient time as I'm about to do a lot of traveling and will only have my iPhone with me during this time.
I'd appreciate any possible solutions because I'm about to lose my mind.

Sounds like you are not using icloud, but sync.me app. Why don't you check their support page and their FAQ.

  • Outlook 2011 keeps forgetting Gmail passwords

For some reason Outlook 2011 keeps forgetting passwords. It only forgets Gmail passwords, not Hotmail or other accounts. It seems to happen irregularly every one or two weeks.  Any idea why this happens or how to stop it?
    cheers
    Robin

I, too, use Outlook 2011 and will occasionally get a message that indicates, both on my Gail accounts and on my iCloud account, that no connection can be made and would I like to reenter my password. I just click "No" and, lo and behold, my mail comes pouring in. I don't think that it's a problem with Outlook - I think that with IMAP accounts there are just occasional 'hiccups' on the server side.

  • Mail and iCloud keep forgetting my password

I have three mail accounts. One of them is my iCloud ID account. A couple times a week my computer will forget the password to one or more of my accounts. At the beginning of the day yesterday, it knew all 3 accounts. By last night it had lost my iCloud account. This morning it lost the other two. This has been going on since I upgraded to Lion in December.

Have a look here. I'm not sure if it applies to iCloud, but certainly works for Mail.

  • Macbook keeps forgetting mail password on restart

Why does my macbook pro lose mail password, go to default wallpaper, load calendar when I restart or turn on my computer? How can I fix this?

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • After forgetting the password for my iPhone, I am trying to restore it through iTunes, however, during the process, the phone keeps turning on and asking for the password, thus canceling the process. Any advice?

After forgetting the password for my iPhone, I am trying to restore it through iTunes, however, during the process, the phone keeps turning on and asking for the password, thus canceling the process. Any advice?

Yes, you will still get the prompt.
I meant reset then try the recovery mode restore again.
You can also try DFU Mode.
DFU (Device Firmware Update) Mode is different than Recovery Mode.
DFU Mode is a special mode where the device can still interface with iTunes, yet it does not load the iBoot bootloader.
    DFU Mode:
Plug your device into your computer.
    Turn off the device.
Hold the Power button for 3 seconds
Hold the Home button without releasing the Power button for 10 seconds
Release the Power Button but keep holding the Home button
Keep holding the Home button until you are alerted by iTunes saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode
NOTE: Make sure the device screen is blank and no logos are present. Be patient, it make take several trys.

Help! I have to keep entering my wifi WEP password every time I slide my iphone 4S on  again.  It doesn't store the password as it should.

The use of WEP is not recommended for compatibility, reliability, performance, and security reasons; WEP is insecure and functionally obsolete. Any reason you're using WEP? I ask, because you might as well not have any security at all, & this is most likely your issue.

  • TS1398 My new iPad keeps forgetting my Internet password every time it is switched off or goes on flight mode

My new iPad keeps forgetting my Internet password every time it is switched off or goes on flight mode. Have tried resetting the network setting as it suggest on the support page. The Internet  works fine with my windows PC and my son's iPad 2. Any advice?

Have you tried powering off and then back on your router?
Does it only happen with your router? If so that would tend to indicate a router problem.

  • MacBook Pro is forgetting time and date and wep password

    Hi,
My Macbook Pro is forgetting the time and date even though I have automatically set time and date checked.
It is also forgetting it's wep password.
This is a pretty new computer.
I've seen a few posts about this, but it doesn't seem like anyone has a solution yet. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

I'm having the same problem and it started right after the Apple Store replaced the logic board in my MacBook. Every time I restart the computer, it says that none of my wireless networks can be found and when I select my network, I have to re-enter the password. It warns me that the date and time were forgotten. Also, two firewall alerts come up asking if I want to allow access to a DNS agent and something else that seems to be related to wi-fi access.
I'm considering tossing out some preference files or resetting the NVRAM as troubleshooting measures.

  • WEP password disappears

I am running an imac on10.4.6 on a small network in a school. Airport works perfectly except i have to keep putting the WEP password in. Is there anyway I can stop it from forgetting everytime it gets swithed off?! Should this be happening?
    Any help much appreciated.

    One other thought, Paul.
And this is probably for the school's NetworkAdmin to perform, using a wired connection to this D-Link.
Be sure that the Firmware is up-to-date on the router.
There should be instructions either in the Router's admin pages, or in the product manual.
Important to remember that a firmware update needs to be done from a computer with a cabled connection to the device.
    Good Luck

  • How do i delete an old iCloud account from phone when I forget my password and I'm not able to reset it because my security questions do not match?! Help!! Currently not able to update any apps or icloud info

How do i delete an old iCloud account from phone when I forget my password and I'm not able to reset it because my security questions do not match?! Help!! Currently not able to update any apps or icloud info...

If your device is signed into an old ID of yours that is an earlier version of the ID you want to sign in with, do the following:
If you are using iMessage and FaceTime, make sure you are signed into these services with your current ID.  If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.)  Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iDevice and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID).  Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll (unless you are using iCloud Photo Library).  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out (or Delete Account if you are not running iOS 8) and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign back in with your current iCloud ID and password (your data will download back to your device).

  • How To Get WINDOWS WEP PASSWORDS To Work

Having problems getting simple simple simple WEP to work with your Airport despite knowing exactly what you are doing with WEP, everything looking fine, and with a network that otherwise has always worked fine before? Might be the case of password used on your clients.
Having set up a few Airports with mixed Windows/Mac clients over the last few years and finally discovering the "0x" prefix double-secret answer, I was trying that at first. But the new Admin client WON'T LET YOU USE THAT or "$" ANYMORE (take note helpful posters who keep giving that as the answer - it DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE). The new Admin client helpfully allows your password to be selected as "hex" now, but restricts it to 10 chars for 40-bit WEP so you get an error with either of those prefixes.
But that's OK because the WEP entry system does work and if you select "Equivalent Network Password" in the Admin client, it will show you the password as you entered it so you can confirm.
HERE however is the trick. The Airport, unlike any other router I've config'd, seems to be fussy about case. Go figure - for hexadecimal, case should not matter, the characters are really 'numbers' so A=10 and B=11 and it should be that a=10 and b=11 as well.
But not for the Airport which is happy getting "0AEB66A88D" but won't authenticate clients which are config'd for "0aeb66a88d". Seems very bizarre as I would have bet my Honore Balzac that the WEP would have been sent in binary at some lower protocol level, but apparently it's sent as a character string. Certainly I have entered WEP keys both ways before into other devices with no problems. Naturally good coders would always convert the case either before sending it and/or upon receipt, but in this case we apparently have lazy coders on both sides - Microslug doesn't 'toupper()' as it sends the string and Apple doesn't 'toupper()' as it receives it...
First a recommendation: get the Airport hardwired to your network temporarily so that as you config you are doing it over an Ethernet cable. This way you can test settings, then still config the Airport without resetting the unit back to "Factory Fresh" every time.
Second the ridiculous WEP answer: Configure the Airport as you think it should be. Then adjust the WEP passwords on client PC's and other devices so that all Hex codes are entered with caps. Voila everything works fine. A bit tedious to have to re-enter the password on every PC or device if you have a few, but better than it not working at all...
Third: It seems to work better on the Windows side if your network is configured as "OPEN" rather than "SHARED" WEP security. This means the router won't request the password, but I'm not sure how much difference that really makes to the client as it should send the WEP key either way...

    Welcome platevoltage,
    this could help you...

  • Im realy getting tired of this.Apple tv2 keeps loosing my password.

About every 3 or 4 days I have to re-enter my password because apple tv2 keeps forgetting it even after I tell it to remember it.This is becoming very annoying as my password is quite long.Ever since version 4.3 this has happened, never before. All of my other devices have no problem remembering passwords just this little black box. Thanks apple. My logitec keyboard used to work with itunes but after the latest update that dont work anymore either, once again thanks apple.I would rather wait longer for an update that works than get one fast that dont work right. To sum things up I have let apple know about this but have received no responce back what so ever.I have also re-downloaded the new software version 4.3 because the movie section went missing all on its own, nice and still have problems.Funny thing is I own a Thomas Edison gramaphone that is over 100 years old and it still works just like it was new,I think the folks at apple could learn a thing or two from him.So my question is has anybody had this problem and is there a fix for it.Like I said I contacted apple and got no responce so that option is out for me.Having spent thousands of dollars on apple products over the years I am rapidly loosing faith in the company, theyre happy to take my money then leave me high and dry. Thanks apple.

Thanks for the reply vazandrew, the password is my itunes store one.Im not sure how it could be a network issue because it only started after the latest update. Also my son has the exact same router and setup as me and he has not had any issues,he lives next door and we are on the same internet provider. His password is always rememberd and mine is only rememberd for a few days then it looses it.I have also downloaded the latest firmware update for my mouse and keyboard and that has not helped either.I wish apple would do more testing before releasing theyre updates.I guess its time to change my password to something with as few characters as possable since I have to keep entering it.Thanks again .......Mike
