Kelby shows CS 6 converting to smart object before using Liquify

In Kelby's "Hidden Gems" of CS6, he converts the image to a smart object using the filter menu "convert for smart objects" before he uses the Liquify filter, thus adding a Liquify mask and the ability to go back and edit Liqify. When I open a Raw file and convert to smart object, it greys out the Liquify filter. Liquify is only available before adding the smart filter. What's wrong with this? I'm on a Mac 10.8.2

Only the Creative Cloud Photoshop CS6 v13.1 has Smart Filter enabled Liquify and Blur Gallery. (However, apparently, 13.1 has an additional payload of bugs and broken functionality.)

  • Opening photo from bridge into photoshop converts to smart object

Instead of opening the psd-file normally from bridge into photoshop the file converts to smart object.
I used to work with CS3 where double-clicking in Bridge on a psd-file would open it in Photoshop. Now, when I double click in Bridge (CS6) it opens a "quick time pro" file, which I definitely don't want. When I use the right mouse to "place in Photoshop" it does so, but then automatically converts the file into a smart object, which I don't want either. What need I do to open a psd-file in Bridge as normal psd-file in Photoshop?
    Thanks in advance for help.

    Hi C. Pfaffenbichler
yes, there is a "Photoshop Document" in the list, but it has not
association. when I click on the little arrow on that line it "searches"
and shows all the files in the "program X86" on the C-drive. but I don't
know what to associate it with, or said differently, I don't know what file
in "programX86" to associate it with.

  • Converting DV to AIC before using in im08.

Like others I notice that DV in im08 is dreadful, this hasn't always been the case and I was quite happy with the way im08 treated DV until the latest round of updates, but let's not get into that old chestnut again.
I just wondered if anyone else has taken to converting DV to AIC before editing in im08. I haven't actually taken any close looks at the differences this makes, but there is a clear difference and huge benefit to doing this.
Conversion is pretty quick, although it does use a bit of space to do this, well worth it IMO though.

I sense you don't understand how iM 08 works so you miss why it's not as simple as using MPEG Streamclip or QT Pro.
If you understood iM 08 you would know WHY DV with its two frame sizes and two aspect ratios and it's four pixel aspect ratios can't be just be converted to AIC which uses square pixels. And, you would know you must also export in a way that restores the SD to it's original format or ROUND objects will not be round.
OK -- I didn't really know any of this until I bought Steve's book. But now i do. And, it's totally relevant to converting DV to anything which is exactly what I said in MY post. See the title of your original post "converting DV to AIC before using in im08."
It seems you and others have gone round and round on bad quality never coming-up with a solution, yet you ***** when someone else recommends a solution you can see for yourself working.
You need to ask yourself -- do i really want good quality or do I just want to keep whining. In any case, don't claim I'm up to "... something." YOU posted the question, not me.
In fact, I wonder why you keep speculating that Apple has done "something" that reduces DV quality. Why would they do this? But, lets assume they did make 08 DV worse. It doesn't matter to me since I don't have quality problems any more.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 - Stack Mode Disabled - Load Image Into Stack Has No "Convert To Smart Object" Option

    Hi,
I have just installed Photoshop CC 2014.1 and I have "Stack Mode" command disabled.
Also, I have no option to convert layers into smart object  when I run "Load Image Into Stack" command.
Can you please tell me how to enable these features?
    Thank you very much.

The 512 MB are a minimum requirement, not some optional thing. Without it, 3D will never work.

  • How do I convert my smart object back into the layers I made it from?

I was working with 100 layers or so and i converted it to a smart object to work with easier.  However some of the layers and layer modes don't interact properly with the background that is separate from the smart object.  There doesn't seem to be an option to release layers within the smart object.  I attempted to solve the problem by dragging the layers from the smart object editable file but it didn't line up within the original file...extremely frustrating.  Any solutions? PS6 BETA Lion OSX

It was created inside the file.  They were differnt dimensions though because the layers selected to become a smart object had different bounds beyond the canvas.
The issue was that once I dragged layers from the editable file that was the smart object I would attempt to realign them BUT I have so many adjustments with masks that we'ren't linked so they wouldn't move with my realignment move(even a control+t)...I ended up going back in and relinking them all(which took really long) in order to realign things.
But really it would be so much easier if i could have just clicked re-add layers to file or something.
    No problem Howard, thanks anyway.

  • Replacing smart object content using Droplets ???

    Hi,
I have a .psd with a smart object as one of the layers.
I could easily go to Layers>Smart Objects>Replace Contents...
but I have a couple of thousand files to replace.
Is there a way to create a droplet so i can just drop the files into it
and it automatically replaces the content of the smart object
then saves out a new file for me?
    This would help me tremendously.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Moo...

In my opinion this task will need some Scripting unless the Layer-names and Layer-structure are identical in all the files.
One should be able to include the Script in a Droplet, but one might just as well use a dialog within the Script itself, I guess.
If you should find no other option you might be able to get some help in the Photoshop Scripting Forum.

  • How to avoid transparent background converting to white in smart object(psb )when image trace High Fidelity as we have the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace.

i have a psd image file in photoshop cc 2014 that has transparent background layer. I wanted it to convert to vector. The best option i saw was to first convert it to smart object in photoshop via Layer->Smart Objects-> Convert to smart Object. then exported it to a psb. Then i opened the file in illustrator and applied the image trace tool but the transparent background got converted to white but i had the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace. But in case of High Fidelity Conversion, the ignore white option is not available, what should I do now?

after using  high fidelity image trace  i hit expand, then i went to layers and hit the drop arrow by my thumbnail, which then shows <Group>,hit that drop arrow and it will show a list of all your paths, the very bottom one was my white background, you can click the eye or delete that path and it disappeared for me. i was using a png file with a transparent background, and nothing else worked for me, it always converted with white background, i never saw this mentioned anywhere, and accidentally discovered it, hope it works!!!

  • Convert multiple layers into separate smart objects

I have multiple layers in a document that I want to make into separate smart objects.
If I select them and choose "convert to smart object" in the Layers Panel fly out, it flattens the layers into 1 smart object.
Can it be done, or do I need to make each layer a smart object one at a time.
    OR... let me back up
I have several files in Bridge, I want to "load into Photoshop layers" using the TOOLS > Batch Command BUT have each file load as a smart object.
    Either way would be great!

While these don't use the batch command, take a look at
from within photoshop, File>Scripts>Load Files into Stack.
For bridge try Dr. Browns Services:
    http://www.russellbrown.com/scripts.html
If you have cs5, you can drag files from mini bridge into an existing
photoshop document, for smart object layers, provided you have
your preferences under general to place or drag raster images as smart objects.

  • Smart objects and convert color profile behaviour

I get different results when converting to the same color profile before and after converting to smart object. Why?
    Do the following:
    1. create a cmyk document with color profile 'Euroscale Uncoated v2' and fill the document with the color 86, 32, 14, 0
    2. change the color profile to 'Euroscale Coated v2' -> the values change to 73, 29, 16, 0, no color change on the monitor
    3. create a smart object -> the values stay the same, no color change on the monitor
    4. create a second document like in step 1
    5. create a smart object -> the values stay the same, no color change on the monitor
    6. now change the color profile to 'Euroscale Coated v2' -> the values stay the same, this time we have a color change on the monitor
Why don't I get the same result?

I found this topic looking for an answer to this exact same problem.
Many of you refer to it as a bug / unexpected behaviour, which i thought it was either. But after some tests, it seems very logical behaviour actually to me now.
It simply follows the rules in the color settings.
In "Color Management Policies", when CMYK is set to "Preserve Embedded Profiles", it keeps the CMYK numbers for smart objects. Setting this to "Convert to Working CMYK" would make the color conversion as expected.
However, i don't think this would be a good idea (depending on your workflow offcourse). For example, pasting a 100K shape from a coated.icc illustrator file into an uncoated.icc photoshop file, as a smart object, would convert the 100K (not keeping the CMYK numbers).
I guess the workarround with a CMYK smart object into an RGB smart object (or maybe LAB), is ok to use when CMYK to CMYK conversion is really necessary for smart objects.

  • How to change default HDR toning with 32 bit smart object - 16 bit, when not merging

Suppose I have just done this:
Opened a RAW file as a 16-bit smart object through camera raw, so I can easily go back and change raw parameters if needed
Converted the document to 32 bit mode
Set 32-bit preview mode to Highlight Compression
Added a Curves layer and fiddled with the sliders until satisfied
    So far so good.
Now what I would like to do is envelope/convert these two layers into a smart object, and then change the mode to 16 bit with a Highlight compression method, but WITHOUT merging the smart object. Merging leaves me with one flattened non-smart layer. Obviously I don't want to merge, because all the smartness of the previous (32 bit) smart object, and I cannot go back to the equally smart raw file.
    For a demonstration: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/russell-brown-at-photoshop-world-2011-orlando/smart-object-32-bi t-hdr-editing-techniques/
After chosing "merge layers", an impressive dialog box is displayed with 4 toning methods. When NOT merging, nothing is displayed, and Exposure/Gamma seems to be silently used. Fine in some cases, but not now. It seems one cannot change that, or choose another one of the 4 methods. But perhaps someone has figured out a way to "will" it in another direction?
    Thanks for your help!

Yes sorry about that, I may have been a bit brief indeed:
I'm using Photoshop CS5, x64, latest patch (12.0.4). And ACR 6.4.1 to open a Raw file as a smart object in Photoshop.
    Step 2: correct, I used Image->Mode->32bit
Step 3: I set the 32bit preview mode by clicking View->32-bit Preview Options->Highlight Compession
Setp 4: I'm mistaken here, I added a Levels layer, because Curves are indeed unavailable in 32 bit mode.
    While I'm at it:
Step 5: Then, I would select these 2 layers in the layers pane and convert them to a smart object (right click in layers pane -> convert to smart object)
Step 6: Next step would be Image->Mode->16-bit. It would then ask to have the layers merged or not before changing bit depth. Only if you choose merge, the HDR toning dialog box would appear, from which you can select Exposure&Gamma, Highlight Compession, Local Adaptation and so on.
I don't want to merge, because it will destroy the smart object containing the Levels layer and the original raw file (in a smart object)
So I select "Don't merge". It doesn't show the HDR toning dialog, and goes straight in 16-bit mode. But what toning mode did it choose? By comparing the result you get when not merging, to the result when one does merge, it appears a default toning mode of Exposure&gamma is chosen. That's not what I want, because I would like to have Highlight Compression.
But where can I change this behaviour?

  • PS opens vector smart object all pixilated

I have this problem when using graphics from Illustrator as vector smart objects in Photoshop. I have followed tones of heated discussions on this but I haven't got any further. So here is what I do following the steps on the PS help: I copy graphics in AI and paste them in PS as smart object. A layer will be added that even has the name vector smart object but the graphic itself is all pixilated. Now the size of my PS-file is 150X150 Pixels with a resolution of 300. I need this size because I want to implement the file into my website and the layout requires this size for all my graphics. I would say it doesn't matter much what size the file is anyway since according to the PS help whatever vector smart object I place in Photoshop it won't change image quality when transformed. Therefor I'd say that not even the small file should be a problem here. But obviously there is something not working... because even when, to compare, I paste the graphic as pixel it shows the same result. Strange enough that I have used this vector smart objects before and it worked just fine... So I tried to paste the graphic in different ways, saving it as pdf in AI and then placing it in PS, insert it directly as smart object, making sure the file handling and clipboard references are adjusted, and finally after no success trashing the preferences in both applications. Still not closer to a satisfying result. I attach the graphics (first the AI graphic, then the vector smart object from PS) to show the difference and maybe there is someone out there that can tell what I am doing wrong. By the way I just converted the files to jpegs to post them here so the sizes might not match on the screen...

    One other thing to check...
Are you viewing the display at 100%?
Photoshop's OpenGL-based image resizing algorithms are smoother and fuzzier than they used to be (or than they are with OpenGL disabled).  What I'm getting at is that you may be perceiving fuzziness in the display that's not really there in the image.
How does the fuzziness look if you zoom in a lot?

  • Photoshop CS6: Pros and Cons of Using Smart Objects

I haven't had Photoshop CS6 for that long, and have only just got past feeling uncomfortable with using Curves, now I've learnt how to use them properly.
My concern is - I am currently learning about Smart Objects. The concept, at first, seemed like 'the best thing since sliced bread', being able to non-destructively use filters, Shadows/Highlights command, Unsharp Mask, endlessly scale using Free-Transform etc etc, without harming pixels at all.
However, the more articles I read about their use in Photoshop, the more I am afraid to start using them in my workflow.
I understand that when you convert to a Smart Object, this process is non-destructive, i.e. I can perform as many readjustments to a filter, for example, and Photoshop will always work from the embedded container file (which has had no filter adjustment made to it) to adjust the filter to your most recently adjusted settings. If you later decide you don't want to use a filter at all, and rasterize the Smart Object back into a regular layer again, is this process non-destructive as well?
Then there is this article, which I struggle to understand properly:
    http://bjango.com/articles/smartobjects/
Please see the part 'Smart Objects Created in Photoshop'. It seems to say I can't scale with a Smart Object without causing interpolation and blurry edges. Please can somebody clarify what the writer of this article is trying to get across, because it is well documented that Smart Objects can be endlessly rescaled non-destructively.
Please understand I use Photoshop primarily for editing photographs.

There is much modern focus on "non-destructive" editing, but keep in mind if you don't overwrite or destroy the original file there is no destruction at the highest level.  Put in layman's terms, you could always start over with the raw file.
That thought segways into my next one:  Non-destructive editing makes sense if you need to use the same information for a variety of somewhat related purposes, or if the work product may need to change (e.g., to suit the whims of a fickle client).
But at another extreme, if you're editing for a particular purpose - say creating the best possible print from an exposure - sprinting right for the finish line by changing pixel values directly and being done with it can be an extremely effective approach.  This requires that you get things right the first time, and that takes practice.
Some folks do their Photoshop work by building up layer after layer and using smart objects, smart filters, etc., and this can be effective but no computer has yet been built that can composite all that stuff in real time with a big image.  So there IS a cost to doing it.  What you might gain by being able to re-do things, you might not have needed to gain if your control responses were instantaneous and you could tweak the intermediate result at every step very easily.  Note the number of posts about how slow Photoshop CS6 is/was at editing deep documents, some by people using 2012 computers.
As with most things, it's horses for courses.  It's good that Photoshop gives us rich tools and choices for how to work.
Regarding your specific question, bear in mind that what's communicated to the parent document from each of its embedded Smart Objects is a flat, rasterized image.  Think of the embedded smart object kind of like going off and opening another document, making the changes you want, saving the document, then flattening it and pasting the pixels into your parent document.
In the very first example in the linked article, they show how the smart-object-rasterized image of a vector circle, subsequently scaled by resampling the parent document in which the Smart Object is used, becomes fuzzy as it is scaled up.  Once you understand this you realize that of course you could scale up the smart object itself, e.g., to a size equal to or larger than what's ultimately needed by the parent document, and then it could be crisp in the parent document where it's used.
Of course, having all your smart objects at a size larger than you need takes up even more resources.

  • Smart object / Auto save bug

    MacPro 1.1, OSX 10.6.8, PSCS6 Beta
Came across the following, which I think is a bug.
    I have two ducuments: D_test_00042.psb and D_test_00052.psb.
Each were build using a few layers and a group "Retouch", and then converted to Smart Object. So both files contain a (different!) Smart Object called "Retouch".
If I open both files, and doubleclick the first SO, then go to the other and do the same, all works more or less as expected:
However, if I open one file, and doubleclick the SO, then close the original file (to save on system recources), thén open the second document and doubleclick the SO in it, I get a warning "The disk copy 'Retouch.psb' was altered since you last opened or saved it. Cancel / Update":
Cancel obviously won't open the second SO, Update updates the SO that's already opened (which belongs to the other document)
(History palette in the top center, shows "Update from file")
Message was edited by: Rene-) for exact workflow and screenshots

Follow up: PSCS4 (11.0.2) behaves the same, so it is probably something I never noticed before (which is surprising, since I didn't alter my workflow) and has nothing to do with Auto Save…
I'll make it a feature request then: Fix this. Use unique names 'internally' for SO's.
I want to be able to open a SO from an older document for instance to be able to copy paste from one SO to another.

  • Smart object layer from PS to AI. how to use??

I successfully work AI vector objects as placed objects into PS by copy pasting or file/place into a smart object layer in PS, I find value in making changes to my vector object dimensions in AI and seeing them updated in PS,
but I don`t know how to do it the other way, meaning a PS jpeg on a layer to AI as smart object, I choose an image on its own layer in PSCS4 and convert to smart object, I (right click) export the contents as jpeg smart object, and then back in AI go file/place the smartobject jpeg, when I make changes to the PSsmartobject in PS like colour shift or dimensions change nothing happens in AI,
I would like to have an image pasted from PS into AI whereby I can change colours and dimensions or add pixels like paint on that smartobject layer in PS and then have it update in AI...

To my knowledge Illustrator does not support smart objects. However it does support image linking. Which means if you update a image in photoshop, Illustrator will know the file has changed.
When placing the file, you will see a checkbox at the bottom of the open dialog box for link, make sure it is checked. When you update the file when Illustrator is running with that file opened, you will get a promt telling you the file has changed and asked you if you want to update the image.
If you choose not to update the image at that time, you can click on the linked file text in the top tool bar and update the image from there.
If the file is not open or Illustrator is not running then the file will update the next time you open the file.
Also you will find a edit original button in the top tool bar to take you back to what ever image editor is assigned to that file format.
To assign a file format to photoshop:
For this example we will use jpeg extention
    1) Open windows explorer
    2) Menu options tools>folder options>File types tab>scroll to jpeg and click on it
    3) Click the advanced tab
    4) see what actions are listed odds are only open and printo are listed
    5) If Edit is not listed, click on the new button
    6) For the action type EDIT
    7) For the application used to perform action click the browse button
    8) Browse for photoshop.exe
    9) The following should now be in the application used to perform action box:
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Photoshop.exe" %1
The above file location is assuming you have CS3 and you used the default installation edit original button in Illustrator and the right mouse button menu in windows explorer will take you to photoshop to edit the file.
    10) After you click OK you will see the new EDIT action in the list
    11) Click OK  and then click close to get out of all the dialog boxes
The action can be removed at any time or edited to use another application.
